Celebrate Maryland Veterans Appreciation Month

The State of Maryland is celebrating Veterans Appreciation Month and honoring military veterans during the month of November with a series of programs, exhibits, and special offers at attractions and businesses throughout the state. The initiative is a joint effort between the Maryland Office of Tourism, Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Maryland Public Television (MPT), and the U.S. Naval Academy.

“Maryland’s veterans are an integral part of the fabric of our great state, and they deserve to be respected and remembered. During Maryland’s Veterans Appreciation Month, there are many ways to pay tribute to the great heroes who sacrificed so much for our state and our nation,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We encourage everyone to visit Maryland’s veterans’ memorials and Welcome Centers to learn their stories and thank them for their selfless service.”

The “MPT Salutes Vietnam Veterans” exhibit will be featured at all eight state-operated Welcome Centers simultaneously and showcase current-day and wartime images of 16 men and women along with their recollections of incidents from the war. Also included is an opportunity for children to color pages to thank veterans as well as stationery for visitors to craft messages to veterans or share their own stories.

Also at the Welcome Centers, the Maryland State Highway Administration’s “Fallen Heroes” exhibit will feature a picture of the service member, a brief write-up about their service and sacrifice, and location information on the road sign erected in their honor. SHA has also created an online map created to help visitors plan stops at Maryland’s veteran memorials. The interactive map features markers denoting memorials across the state, from Sideling Hill in Hancock to Veterans Memorial Park in Ocean Pines.

In addition, veterans will also be able to get new Veterans Appreciation Month Passports at the Welcome Centers. The Veterans Passport offers special discounts during November at a number of Maryland businesses, including: Arundel Mills Mall, Hagerstown Premium Outlets, Tanger Outlets at National Harbor, SoldierFit, Six Flags Maryland, Route 1 Apparel, and more.

The Office of Tourism’s website features special events that will be taking place throughout the month. Visit www.visitmaryland.org/veterans-month for details.

Michigan Tuesday: Coach Speak

Jimmy had his regular Monday press conference and said that Brandon Peters had a 51% chance of starting on Saturday night.   Let's be clear that is really like 89%, I guess there is a chance that Peters doesn't understand the game plan and would have to sit, but that is highly unlikely.

  • He also sort of gave us an update on Nick Eubanks and said he was healing.   We believe he has been out with a concussion and maybe a bone break.
  • He also mention that Grant Newsome and Tarik Black are also both healing.
  • Mike Onwenu and Mason Cole graded out as the best offensive lineman on Saturday.  That is good news for Big Mike and lets hope he is not too banged up.

-Michigan has offered CA 3 star WR Chris Olave .

-This was interesting timing as Michigan just offered 2018 5 star WR and Florida verbal Jamarr Chase.

-Devin Bush Jr. has been named a Butkus Award semifinalist.

- Side note, sounds like Florida is going after UCF's Scott Frost who also would be a top candidate at Nebraska where he played.

Take a quick look at this photo, yes, Peters looks confident, but look at the size of his hands.  There are a few scouts our there, that believe hand size is one of the most important aspects of a successful QB.

Reasons Why Android is Smarter than iOS

Smartphone has become an essential part of our life & most of us are totally dependent on them for our day-to-day tasks. With the two main players in the world of mobile technology – Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, it can be a tough choice to make a decision & pick one OS between these two. While Android is the most commonly used platform for multiple smartphones from different phone manufacturers, iOS can only be used on Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, etc. Talking about apps, most of the iOS Apps built by iPhone App Developers need to be purchased while Android Apps are mostly free.  Though iOS might be the best OS for the Apple lovers, here are some of the main reasons why Android OS is still smarter than iOS:

Multi-devices Support

One of the main reasons why Android OS is being preferred over iOS is the availability of a wide range of multiple phones that support Android platform. In addition to that, users can avail multiple brands while buying an Android phone with different price ranges as per their budget allowance. While for iOS, the choice of smartphone is only one i.e. iPhone and it is quite pricey as compared to Android phones.

No iTunes Complexity

For the users who are using iPhone for the first time, loading the music tracks on an iPhone can be a headache as it requires connecting the phone, syncing the tracks as well as losing previous data if you are syncing on different PC. Due to this inconvenience, users prefer Android, which requires connecting the phone through the USB cable and copying tracks just like a pen drive. It’s that simple in Android, unlike iOS-based phones.

Split Screen & Personalization

The multitasking feature supported by most of the recent versions of the android phones is the Split screen, which helps in managing multiple tasks simultaneously. While iOS supports this feature only on iPads, not on iPhones. Additionally, Android users can use a launcher, change the icon pack as per their wish & add suitable widgets on the screen. It can be interesting as users won’t be bored but iPhone users can change the wallpaper for changing looks.

Better Navigation Buttons

While iPhone comes with only one home button (that has also been removed in the newly launched iPhone X), Android phones support three buttons to navigate from one menu to another. While Apple developers try to have a simpler approach with one button, it can be frustrating to get used to it, if you were using Android phones earlier.

There is no denial in the fact that there are many reasons why one should opt Android over iOS phones due to its easy usage & multiple features supported. Android phones are built with the dual sim feature and expandable storage option, which is not present in iOS phones. As we know Apps are the lifeline of these smartphones, choose the right Mobile App Development Company that has in-depth knowledge of all the latest development trends, if you are thinking to build an app for your business.

Frey flips the script on laundry products and users

In today’s on-demand society, there’s a subscription service to meet your every need. From razors and electric toothbrush heads to pre-packaged meals, there’s a company out there that promises to take the hassle out of your shopping experience. Frey, born in the basement of an Annapolis home, saw an opportunity to do the same thing with laundry products but decided to target an unexpected audience – men.

“The industry is missing the male aspect of laundry,” said co-founder Leif Frey. “We’re breaking down traditional gender roles because the reality is that men are doing laundry too.”

Leif and his brother Erin Frey saw a niche they could fill that traditional laundry products didn’t. The brothers knew they could create a product with a cologne-like scent that wasn’t harmful to apparel or the environment.

Frey For Men“The products in today’s market have bottles and caps that encourage over-usage and filling along with harsh chemicals and fillers to give the appearance of more product,” Leif said. “We designed a bottle that was easy to dispense and store with a concentrated formula to eliminate unnecessary waste. Our formulations are primarily natural content to help your garments look better, longer.”

The company launched two years ago in September of 2015 with the first bottles being hand-filled in the brothers’ Annapolis residence. After appearing on Steve Harvey’s show Funderdome and receiving coverage on The Ellen Degeneres Show, GQ magazine, ELLE magazine, Good Morning America. and BBC News, Frey has grown from their Annapolis home basement to a Baltimore warehouse to a supply chain running up and down the east coast. Leif attributes much of their success to timing the launch in a market that was ripe for change.

“The research is clear that menswear is slowly outgrowing womenswear in a variety of areas including fashion, skin care, and fragrance,” Leif said.

With its rapid success, Frey has lofty goals of becoming the go-to online source for the laundry industry. Leif says the company ultimately wants to break the grip that the giant companies have on the laundry business.

“We want to be the brand that turns the laundry game on its head.”

Michigan Monday: Is Full of Informaiton

Side note:  I have no idea, what happened with the right side bar.  If your an HTML developer and a fan of the Big House blog, please let me know and I will send you the code.  I'm sure it just a tagging error and a quick fix.  Email me if you would like to give me a hand.  Thank you!

As expected, Michigan lost a 2018 commitment and gained one after the game on Saturday.   First, we will do a quick look at the Golden Gophers and then discuss the loss/gain.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Look Ahead:

Record: 4-4 with wins over Buffalo, Oregon State, MTSU and Illinois.  Losses to: Maryland, Purdue, MSU and Iowa last week.

As we know, this the first year for the King of Rowing the Boat, PJ Fleck from Western Michigan.  He is a good coach and it will take a few years to turn around that program.

The Minnesota Offense passes for 156 yards per game (116th) and runs for 182 (47th).   They score 25 points per (89th).

The Minnesota Defense gives up 18 points per (21st).

ESPN Big 10 Rank:  #10
Line: Michigan -15.5

You know how I feel about night games and hopefully Michigan can get a win this Saturday night and keep a hold of the Little Brown Jug.

  • Florida fired their head coach Jim McElwain on Sunday after getting housed by Georgia and lying about getting death threats.   I don't have any inside information but I wouldn't be surprised if Chip Kelly gets a call for that opening.  They could probably hire him in the next week or so, before Tennessee or Nebraska comes calling.  Maybe they will hire back Urban Meyer!  :)

4 Star IN OG Emil Ekiyor de-committed from Michigan

This has been brewing for weeks/months.   Emil committed to Michigan early and keep saying the right things but his actions told another story, as he was taking multiple trips to Alabama.   Yesterday, he officially pulled the trigger and switched to Alabama.   EE was Michigan's highest rated recruit and now the Wolverines will look to replace him with another offensive lineman in this class.

3 Star Missouri RB Hassan Haskins committed to Michigan on Sunday

Michigan loses EE and gains an HH!  Hassan is an under the radar, senior RB that has been having a great senior year.  He has rushed in the area of 1,800 yards and scored 30 touchdowns already this season! He is 6'1 202 pounds and reminds people of Le'Veon Bell a talented power back.

His offer list has the likes of Purdue, WKU, and Memphis but that's not the entire story.   Big programs were looking hard at HH and many more offers were expected to roll in.  Michigan might have beat those programs to the punch for Hassan.

HH is now the 15th player in the class that might top out at 20 or so players.    Both lines continue to be the focus moving forward.

Michigan Doesn't Peter Out - They Peters In

Michigan quarterback Brandon Peters throws a pass in
John Grelick, Det News
It seems like I have had this feeling already this year. A back-up QB enters the game and give the Michigan offense life when it looked lifeless.

It was O'Korn at Purdue but this time it was Peters over Rutgers at the Big House.  JOK couldn't have played any worse to start the game,  he threw a terrible pick, fumbled two snaps, and completed 3 balls for 13 yards.

Lets be honest, Brandon Peters didn't light the world on fire but a strong running game with his 124 yards passing was enough to knock out Rutgers.   What he did do was look confident in the pocket,  threw an accurate ball, and moved the Michigan offense.   The real stars of the game was both lines.

The O line was got two Michigan RB's over 100 yards and 334 yards on offense with no sacks.
The defensive line had 5 sacks, 11 TFL's and held Rutgers to 94 yards rushing.

Yes, it was Rutgers and yes it got a little weird when it was 7-7 but lets hope this was a glimpse of Michigan's future.  Peters will have some redshirt freshman moments but from what we saw today he sure looked comfortable under center.

Cheers
  • Brandon Peters
  • 2 Michigan RB's over 100 yards
  • Michigan offensive line!
  • Michigan Defensive line
  • Solid play calling when Peters got in the game
  • Kareem Walker looked really good
  • Devin "The Missile" Bush with 11 tackles
  • Gary and Hurst were un-blockable
Jeers
  • Slow start
  • Terrible play call on 2nd and 18 early
  • 7-7 in 2nd Quarter
  • Injuries to Big Mike and Kareem Walker
  • Losing the turnover battle
  • Couple bad penalties

We need to be careful knighting Peters but I liked how steady he looked.  He didn't play nervous and seemed confident out there.  Maybe his quiet personality and his presumed lack of leadership, actually translate well on the field because he doesn't get rattled.

Michigan took care of business today and maybe we have seen the QB of the future.  Jimmy has already named him the starter for next weeks night game for the Little Brown Jug.   Let's hope Jimmy has a couple 7:30 practices this week to get the Wolverines ready for another night game.

Rutgers Preview

Image result for rutgers mascot
alumi.rutgers.org
Time: Noon
Location: Big House
Weather: 41 w/10% rain
TV: BTN
Stream: BTN To Go
Line:  Michigan - 23

Let's be honest, we are not watching too many Rutgers games around these parts.   Even with that, Rutgers isn't the worst team in the Big Ten this year.   They are on a two game winning streak and 3-4 on the year.    They have a nice win over Purdue and played Washington within a couple TD's. They also got beat 56-0 to OSU and lost to Eastern Michigan.

We know what Michigan did last week and they're looking for a strong performance to help with confidence.  Which is so important for a young team.

Tale of the Tape
M Defense vs. Rutgers O = Don Brown
M Offense vs. Rutgers D = Karan Higdon
Special Teams = Push

Off the bus this is a huge miss-match and Michigan has the advantage in pretty much every expect.  Rutgers has a good return guy in WR Janarion Grant and will look to score anyway possible.  The funny thing about football is you never know what is going to happen and Rutgers is on a two game winning streak and Michigan is 1-2 in their last 3 games.

Say, that was fun if......................
  • This game is over by the 2nd Quarter
  • Peters gets a lot of playing time
  • Michigan rushes for 300 yards
  • JOK hits open WR's and TE's
  • Michigan wins the turnover margin
Say, I can't wait to hear how Harbaugh is a terrible coach if.............
  • This game is close in the 2nd half
  • O'Korn struggles
  • Michigan can't run
  • The defense clearly has a Penn State hangover
Michigan won this game by a million last year and should dominate the over matched Rutgers team.  The issue is, Michigan hasn't dominated anyone this year and has struggled to score in every game.  I get asked all the time, what is the issue with the offense?  If you can't block anyone, everyone looks terrible.   Michigan's line has under achieved again and Michigan's QB's have played poorly.   Minus a few fumbles, I think Michigan's RB's have played well.    Michigan has struggled to get positive yards on firsts downs and that has equaled close games and a loss to MSU.   Penn State was the better team and that was clear early.

If Michigan thinks they are the better team and don't have to show up, this game will again be uncomfortably close.   Chis Ash, the Rutgers head coach is looking for a program changing win and a win in A2 would qualify.

I'm looking for a few things in this game.
1. Better execution on offense
2. Brandon Peters playing in a real football game
3. A dominating performance from the Michigan defense

Rutgers has already lost to a school from Washtenaw County and Michigan should be mad and embarrassed on what happened last week.   The NJ players on Michigan's roster will be excited to play this game and I'm sure will see friends on the other sideline.  I expect great focus and a dominating performance.  Anything less will continue to be concerning.

Michigan 31 Rutgers 3

Big Ten Weekend Match-ups

It's crystal clear which is the best game of the weekend.  It's a top 10 match-up that is somehow not played at night.  This will be an interesting game and the winner should have the advantage of heading to the Big Ten Title game and maybe even the playoffs.

Game of the Week:
Penn State at OSU: The line on this game surprised me as PSU is a 6.5 underdog.  I expected maybe a few points but not a TD.  Penn State is hot and OSU is coming off a bye week so it will be interesting to see what happens.  OSU at home will be tough to beat, but Penn State made the #1 defense in the country look like Rutgers last week.  Penn State 28 OSU 24

Minnesota at Iowa:  The Golden Gophers are still a little up and down as they continue to learn how to "row the boat".   Iowa is doing what Iowa does every year, look good one week and then terrible the next.  Iowa is -7.   Iowa 17 Minnesota 14

Nebraska at Purdue:  Nebraska will be looking for a new head coach soon and earlier this year it looked like Purdue's Jeff Brohm would only be there a year.  Purdue then lost to Rutgers last week, which is a clear sign there is more work to be done.   Purdue is a 5.5 favorite.   Nebraska 10 Purdue 7

MSU at Northwestern:  The Spartans are keeping their team together with duct tape and crazy glue but its working.  They keep winning ugly and might have to do the same this weekend.   MSU is -2.5 in this one.   MSU 21 NW 14

IU at Maryland:  IU has a losing record at 3-4, the team that took Michigan to OT.  This is a strange year for Michigan Football.   Maryland is probably looking to the baseball team for it's QB, as they have been dropping like flies.  IU is favored by 4.5.   IU 28 Maryland 13

Wisconsin at Illinois:  This is a 26 line, enough said.   Wisky 34 Illinois 10

  • Mo Hurst is now rated No.1-graded interior run stopper in college football, per Pro Football Focus.

Wolverine Wednesday: Hawkins Has a New Job

Brad Hawkins has had a long unique road on his way to Ann Arbor.  He was expected to join the 2016 class as a 4 star WR out of NJ but had some academic things he needed to clear up.  He went to a prep school got his grades in order and joined the 2017 class a re-classified 3 star WR.

With the large WR in the 2017 class it was expected that Brad would join the DB unit as a safety come Fall Camp.  That happened and we really haven't see much of him (expecting a redshirt) until Saturday's game where he was returning kick offs with Ambry Thomas.

Now it seems Don Brown has asked him to play the Viper role in his defense.  "They came to me and said, 'Brad, we want you to play viper,'" Hawkins told reporters on Tuesday. "It was coach's decision. I just did what was best for the team."

Good Luck to him and I hope he does well as a kick off returner as well.

  • WOTS is that Emil Ekiyor is expected to de-commit from Michigan soon and maybe follow that up with an Alabama commitment.

  • Jimmy is the third highest paid coach this year behind $11M for Saban, $8.5M for Dabo and $7M for Harbaugh.

Michigan Tuesday: One Play Away

Jimmy yesterday held his regular press conference, where he said what he always does:  We have areas where we played well and areas that need improvement.

The Brandon Peters  question was asked 3 or 4 times and Jimmy kept saying that he is the second string QB and is just one play away from being in the game and needs to be ready.

Reading between the lines, that means if John O'Korn goes down with an injury that Brandon Peters is one play away from being the Michigan QB.   In this case, I think it has a second meaning and that if JOK doesn't preform better on Saturday, Brandon is one bad play away from getting snaps as the Michigan QB.

What this does is a couple things.   Jimmy will never revel strategy on Monday for a game on Saturday.   He believes that would give the opponent too much information.   So even if he is planning to start Peters he won't be telling the world that 6 days before the game.

Another sign that Brandon might get more snaps is that Michigan was preparing him to go in at the end of the game after Penn State fumbled.   The fumble call was reversed and Peters never saw any action.

It will be interesting to see what happens next here.   JOK is not the future and either Peters or Dylan McCaffrey is.

  • What is the best news the Michigan program can get after two night game losses?   Another night game of course.  This one will be for the Little Brown Jug against Minnesota.   What great news!! The game will be on Fox.

  • Lavert Hill gave the Penn State crowd the finger on Saturday.  Jimmy has addressed it with him and it won't happen again.

  • 4 Star OG Emil Ekiyor is Michigan biggest flight risk in the 2018 class.  Alabama is recruiting him very hard and he has taken a few trips to Sabanville already.    Emil and family is expected to be in town this weekend and Michigan looks to hold on to this talented offensive lineman.   There is a pretty good opportunity for early playing time in Ann Arbor, which hopefully will be the deciding factor.  I think he wants to sign in the early period in December, so the clock is ticking.

  • Commit watch this weekend for  2018 RB Hassan Haskins who will be making his first visit to Ann Arbor.

Fall agri-tourism in full swing

Guest feature: Julie Oberg is the Communications Director for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Follow along with MDA @MdAgDept and Maryland’s Best @MdsBest.

Crisp, autumn days are here and Maryland’s fall agri-tourism season has started. Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder encourages all Marylanders to get out on a farm to experience first- hand the state’s rich selection of agricultural recreational opportunities.

Maryland’s farmers offer a variety of fall activities as a low-cost way for families to spend time together outdoors. October is the perfect time to experience the fun of selecting your own pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns, getting lost in a corn maze, taking a hayride, or attending a fall festival. Depending on the farm, visitors may be able to enjoy a variety of other activities including farm stands, scarecrow-making, petting farms, pony rides, live music, decorations, fresh apple cider, home baked goods and more.

“The fall is a wonderful time for families and friends to get outside and onto a farm,” said Secretary Bartenfelder. “Agritourism is a booming industry here in Maryland. Visiting a farm is great fun for all ages and supports our family farmers too. On-farm tourism operations look great and are ready for visitors with their fresh products and lively activities.”

According to the most recent agricultural census completed in 2012 by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, there are 33,161 agri-tourism farms nationally with revenues totaling $704 million. In Maryland, there are 307 agri-tourism farms with revenues of $7.2 million.

Michigan Monday: Starting To Pick Up the Pieces and Rutgers

Michigan got blown out last Saturday night which is now history.   It's time to start putting back the pieces of the puzzle for this season and looking at pieces for next as well.

The Rutgers game is the time to do that and the hope is Jimmy gives Brandon Peters that many fans have wanted since the Spring Game.

Rutgers is 3-3 and on a 2 game win streak against Illinois and Purdue

They pass for 133 yards a game (122 in the country)
They run of 167 (63)

Defense gives up 23 points (53) a game

They score 26 (84th) points.

ESPN Big Ten Rank: 12 ahead of Maryland and Illinois.

This is not the Rutgers team from last year and they are getting better.   Chris Ash has them playing better defense and being .500 at this point of the season is a win for the program and the new coach.

They did lose to OSU 56-0 three weeks ago and Michigan should still hold an advantage in talent and coaching.  We saw a ton of freshman play against Penn State and I expect to see more this week.  Would love to see more Nico Collins and Kwity Paye.

Time to start building what the team will look like next year.  Let's see if the coaches agree.

The Orange Bowl Curse

I know you have heard of the Madden curse but are you aware of the Orange Bowl curse?

No?

It's actually a new thing, the year after playing in the Orange Bowl your team will lose it's starting QB early in the year and then your season goes down the drain very fast.  Michigan and Florida State are this years examples of that very curse.

How about that game tonight?  Penn State left no doubt which was the better team, didn't they?

I'm not even mad because Michigan got their backside whipped tonight and our best unit was the one getting their butts kicked.   Didn't see Penn State running over one of the best defenses in the country, but they sure did tonight.

The Barkley problem is real.  You either have to leave in a LB to stop the run but as soon as the offense sees 3 LB's in the game, they roll out an RPO and put Barkley at WR.  That right there equals game over.   You can throw to him or have your QB scramble, because the defense will roll with Barkley every time.  It is also clear that a LB can't cover Barkley as a WR.

Michigan got hit early, wobbled and then put a few good rounds together before getting knocked out in the late rounds.

Penn State was by far the better team, just like Michigan was last year.

Michigan doesn't have any reasons to lose to the likes of Michigan State and Iowa.   Right now Penn State and Ohio State are playing football at another level and one the Wolverines haven't seen for years.   Those two teams will play for the Big Ten Championship next week in my mind.

I give JOK and Jimmy a tip of the hat tonight as well.   They did all they could to win this game.  JOK held the ball too long a few times and had a fumble, but I thought all in all, he showed a positive step forward which hopefully will pay off against Wisconsin and Ohio State.

The fire you smelled wasn't the season going up it smoke, it was all the red shirts Jimmy burned tonight, which is a unique decision.  Mostly after Penn State jumped out to a 14 -0 lead early in the 1st quarter.

There really isn't much more to say on what happen tonight.  Michigan will have to play very well not to have a 4 loss season.

Friday Night Commit: Welcomes Mustapha Muhammad

Earlier tonight, Mustapha Muhammad committed to the Wolverines.  MM is from Missouri City, Texas and plays at Ridge Point High School.  He is a 4 star commit to all the services and is 6'4 and 235 pounds.   He joins Michigan's 2018 class!

MM has favored the Wolverines since this summer and I believe he committed to the coaches prior to the IU game last weekend.   MM is one of the top 15 players in Texas and can see how the Wolverines leverage the TE in Jimmy's offense.

MM is an Under Armour All American and will play in the game in Orlando.  His offer list is a nice one with the likes of:  Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Texas, TX AM, ND, USC, UCLA, Alabama, Miami, Wisconsin and many more.

This is Michigan's 15 commit for the 2018 and second TE with Luke Schoonmaker who is one of the finalist for the last spots in the UA game as well.   This is the third commit from Texas with the Green Brothers.

Will Michigan wear all white for a white out?  Maybe they should recycle those Maize jerseys as that might be the best game they have played all year.   Everyone by now knows I hate night games.   The reason, I hate going to sleep pissed off from what I just saw.  Jimmy doesn't like them either and has 1 win over Rutgers at night as Michigan head coach.   Not great Jim!

Tale of the Tape
UM offense vs. PSU Defense = PSU
PSU offense vs. UM Defense = Push
Rest = Penn State
Recent poor play = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Momentum = Penn State

Does this sound familiar?  Last year Penn State headed into the Big House being beat up on defense and after a loss to their instate rival.   They couldn't move the ball on offense against Michigan's defense and the Penn State defense being so banged up couldn't stop Michigan's offense.   Michigan housed them in what looked like another Penn State decline.

Later that year, Michigan gave us a preview of their 2017 offense at Iowa and Penn State beat Ohio State in Happy Valley on a blocked punt.   Penn State ended up in the Big Ten Championship game and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Stand up and Sing Hail to the Victors if............
  • Michigan can win this game on defense
  • Michigan's offense doesn't turn the ball over
  • Michigan can find a way to score points
  • Jimmy out coaches James Franklin
Yell, I better take an Advil PM if...................
  • Michigan D can't stop Barkley and the long pass PSU offense
  • Michigan's offense look like it has the past 2 weeks
  • Jimmy's night game voodoo follows him to Happy Valley
  • Michigan's offensive game plan is - offensive

James Franklin has a good team, it has a Heisman candidate, an 8th ranked defense, #2 AP ranking and a ton of momentum from last year's finish and rolling a bunch of bad teams.   This is not a great team, Iowa found a way at home to almost beat them and their running game/Barkley ground attack has been shut down by the likes of Northwestern and IU who just gave up 278 yards to Michigan.

James also struggles in game management situations but has a new contract and Texas AM is rumored to be already courting him.    Michigan has a clear advantage in coaching but we have failed to see that in the last two weeks.  Something is broken and its not on the defense.

Is it the QB Play?  Probably.  Is it the RT position?  Maybe.  Is it the play calling?  It hasn't been good.

So what do we do now?  I have no idea.   Are the issues fixable?  Penn State won't let Michigan run the ball down their throat and O'Korn will have to complete passes to TE's.  In fact, only throw to TE's and Grant Perry.   I'm also good with a screen to Chris Evans.   Penn State's defense did have trouble against Iowa in short to mid pass routes.

If Michigan is going to win this game they have to do it on defense.   They will have to give the offense short fields and even score points.  Michigan's offense will have to try to hold on to the ball and find a couple more points out there.   I don't see Penn State running over the Michigan defense unless they are on the field non-stop.   Everything points to a Penn State victory, which I hope the Michigan coaches can use for motivation.   Is it possible that Herbie and ABC Primetime College Football don't do anymore Michigan games?

Fall back into Maryland’s Civil War history

As the leaves change color and the weather starts to turn, fall becomes the perfect time to explore Maryland’s role in the Civil War. Here at Maryland Commerce, we encourage visitors to take a weekend trip to one of our state’s local Civil War sites and learn more about the history and significance in our nation’s history.

Last month, the National Park Service commemorated the 155th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam and the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Antietam National Cemetery. Known as the bloodiest single day of battle in all of American History, Antietam was one of the turning points in the Civil War, leading to President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation announcement and the freeing of more than three million slaves.

After experiencing the Antietam National Battlefield, explore the surrounding small towns and local recreational stops. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is close by in neighboring Frederick County, and the newly-expanded Antietam Brewery is just a 25 minute drive north of the battlefield. Brewery owner Bill Skomski says that they “name most beers after the Civil War” and include American history stories on the cans.

Another milestone taking place this year is the 15th anniversary of the Civil War driving trails, including: Antietam Campaign: Lee Invades Maryland Trail, Baltimore Riot Trail, Gettysburg Campaign Trail, John Wilkes Booth: Escape of an Assassin Trail, and The Attack on Washington: The Last Invasion Trail. The five trails – all unique from one another – span the state and give a glimpse into the soldiers’ journey through Maryland.

Plan your trip in advance by downloading the Civil War Trails app, available in both the App Store and Google Play Store. Since launching, the app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

For more information on the trails or to order a free map guide, go to www.visitmaryland.org or call 800-719-5900.

Big Ten Preview Week 8 and Some News and Notes

Ok, we know what the Big Ten game of the week is, so we will look at some of the other match-ups.

Second Tier Big Ten Game of the Week

Indiana at MSU:  The house fell in on the Spartans last year and the news got even worse this summer.  MSU was expected not to be average this year but terrible.  That didn't happen and the Spartans are finding a way to win every week.  They played the Monsoon perfect in Ann Arbor and even played in a rain storm in Minneapolis last weekend as well.   Maybe they got a bunch of guys from the water polo team to suit up?  Now they welcome a tough IU team to East Lansing.   The team Michigan played last weekend, could upset the Spartans.  Many times those efforts don't translate week after week and not on the road.   MSU is -7.   MSU 20 IU 17

Purdue at Rutgers:  There might be a few points scored by the Boilermakers in this one.  Purdue -9.   Purdue 51 Rutgers 28.

Maryland at Wisconsin:  Has Wisconsin played any road games this year?  Another quiet convincing win for the Badgers.  Wisky -24.  Wisconsin 32 Maryland 14

Iowa at Northwestern:  These are very similar teams and it should be a competitive game. Vegas agrees and has made the Hawkeyes a 1.5 favorite.  If you watch two Big Ten games this weekend, I suggest this be the second one.   Northwestern 24 Iowa 21

Illinois at Minnesota:  Is anyone willing to trade Wisconsin for Illinois on Michigan's schedule?  We will throw in a MAC team to be decided later.  Anyone in?  No?  Shoot.   Lovie vs. Row Your Boat - The Golden Gophers are still a year or two away.  Illinois is 3 or 4 years away and they are almost a two TD dog at 13.5.  Minnesota 28 Illinois 21

  • The Michigan - PSU line has dropped a point since Monday it's now down to Michigan +9.5.

  • Tim Drevno did a presser yesterday and basically said, they are very very close to being a good offense.   I'm not sure we have seen much evidence of that.   This would be a good week for the light to go on though.

  • I would like to see Chris Evans in more of RB/Slot WR role.  I think he would be great in some WR looks and try to get him to space.   It also gets more game breakers on the field at the same time.

  • Look for PA native Khaleke Hudson to play inspired on Saturday night in his first game at Happy Valley.

Wolverine Wednesday: Is Big Mo The Best Defensive Player in the Country?

Image result for mo hurst
saturdaytradition.com
Pro Football Focus thinks so and has an article up on the theWolverine.com.  Here's some highlights about Big Mo Hurst from the article:

“Maurice Hurst is probably the best player in the country regardless of position right now,” PFF Analyst Josh Liskiewitz said. “There’s no other way to put it at this point.”

“He’s just dominant in every single phase,” Liskiewitz said. “He reminds me of Gerald McCoy when he was at Oklahoma in that he’s just completely unblockable up front. Explosive first step and guys just can’t stay with him.”

Michigan State senior center Brian Allen is one of PFF’s highest rated centers in the nation, and Liskiewitz said Hurst “chewed him up and spit him out.”

“I would be stunned at this point if he wasn’t a top 15 pick,” Liskiewitz said. “When we do our next batch of top 32 draft prospects, he’s probably going to be No. 1 overall. Especially considering the quarterback play has been a disappointment throughout the country.”
At worst, he said he’d be top five in those rankings next week.

“Maurice Hurst has been as dominant as any player in the country at his position,” Liskiewitz said. “That’s a premium position as far as the NFL is considered. Solomon Thomas is nothing compared to Maurice Hurst, and he went No. 3 overall last year.”

I can't believe the accolades about Mo in this article.  There is more but I didn't want to past the entire article.  Check it out.

  • 2019 5 star commit Chris Hinton and his 2020 class brother Myles will visit Ann Arbor on October 28th for the Rutgers game.

  • Update on announcement: 2018 Missouri City (Tex.) 4-star TE Mustapha Muhammad will announce at 6:30 on Friday at his school.  (7:30 EST)

  • Michigan sees something they like in 2018 3 star RB Hassan Haskins, he was just offered and his other offers were highlighted by the likes of Purdue and Memphis.   Hassan is expected to visit soon, I believe for the Rutgers game.  He will be on commit watch while in Ann Arbor for sure.

This is Economic Development

Guest feature: Pam Ruff is the Executive Director of the the Maryland Economic Development Association. Follow MEDA on Facebook and Twitter.

On October 22 we kick off Economic Development Week in Maryland to highlight positive impact that is made on our state every day in the name of job creation and investment in our future.

Maryland’s community of economic developers, businesses and government leaders usher dreams that build business into the pipeline. At this very moment, economic and community development professionals throughout the state are providing start-up support, gap funding, workforce training, and location assistance, among other services, to help businesses fuel forward motion. These public and private sector partners transform our communities, one passion project at a time.

When a business owner needs more space, more training, or more capital, they call on our economic development community to assist them with their needs. Entrepreneurs with innovative ideas turn to economic developers to help move the needle forward on their professional goals. If a building is renovated downtown, a groundbreaking takes place on a property that will employ residents in the area, or a restaurant gets new equipment to expand their services to customers…you can bet an economic developer was involved in making it happen.

As Executive Director of the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA), I watch economic development professionals, our members, attract and expand businesses, revitalize Main Streets, beautify neighborhoods and improve infrastructure all the time. From raising your home value to cutting your commute, economic development touches every aspect of your life.

Economic development transforms lives by creating opportunities, inspiring innovation, and enriching communities. Get to know more about what economic developers do and who they are by joining our statewide celebration of Economic Development Week from October 22-28. This week provides jurisdictions an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of business development within their communities. It also gives citizens the forum to ask good questions about projects in the works within your town or city.

To engage in the dialogue:

  • Go to medamd.com for a list of local Economic Development Week activities
  • Visit your local economic development office website for news, resources and programs
  • Join a civic or neighborhood association to make your mark
  • Attend a conference or program to network with the economic developers in your community, city, state, or region

Whether you float a new idea, attend a workshop or meet an inspiring entrepreneur, Economic Development Week is your chance to participate in progress.

Michigan Tuesday: Is it Time For Peters?

Image result for Brandon Peters Michigan
freep
When the year started, the media said that Michigan was too young to be considered a legit contender for the playoffs.   Then Michigan dominated Florida and they changed their minds and put Michigan in the top 10.   In the next few games, Michigan struggled to score points, but looked like from a far they were playing well.

Then the MSU Monsoon hit and Michigan dropped down the polls.  Add the OT win in Bloomington and the Wolverines find themselves barley in the top 20 at #19.

Do we agree this is not a playoff team?  If we do, then its time to get Brandon Peters ready.

The whispers on Peters is he is athletically the best QB on the roster but has yet to grasp the complicated Harbaugh offense.    A Rivals recruiting insider even called him a recruiting miss, this past weekend.   I don't have any direct info on the kid, but during the signing of the stars he looked disinterested and his body language was not great.    Some are comparing his personality to Jay Cutler, which is clearly the opposite of Jimmy's.   That could be a problem if accurate.

I was watching ESPN College's Game day before the IU kickoff and they showed Peters warming up and said that we might see Brandon Peters play today.   That was a unique take and maybe came from some inside info from Desmond?

Here a few things we think we know:
  • Jimmy isn't going to throw Peters into a starting role on a night game in Happy Valley.
  • Jimmy got really mad at JOK when he got a delay call on the shovel pass to the hammering panda.  That play was not on tape on now it is.  Does that mean, Jimmy is holding back the offense to not show too much?
  • Peters looked pretty good during the Spring Game.
In fall camp, we were expecting to see a Pep Hamilton west coast offense this year.  I haven't seen anything like that in what Michigan has been running.   Was this a bad hire?  Is Jimmy holding him back?  Is his offense too complicated?   Are the Wolverines too young to run it?

I think the best solution is to give Peters a start or at least some snaps at home for the Rutgers game.   I agree this week is not the time and the Michigan coaches will have to continue to coach up JOK to find the Purdue QB instead of the IU/MSU QB to upset the Nittany Lions.

If Michigan does lose this weekend, then there is no reason not to play Peters even if he knows 20% of the play book.   Maybe he is one of those bad practice - great game guys?  We won't know for sure until we see it in a real game.

Michigan Monday: Looks Ahead to Penn State

I felt good about this game prior to the last few weeks of non-offensive football (which was pretty offensive to most Michigan fans).   Penn State has played nobody this year, how about this for a murders row:  Akron, Pitt, Georgia State, Iowa, Indiana, and Northwestern.    Their only tough game  was at Iowa, which they won on the last play.

So Michigan might have a chance this weekend, right?  That's hard to answer.  Michigan's defense should keep them in the game, the issue is will Michigan score any points on offense?   It's like Florida bit the Wolverines on Labor Day weekend and now they have the Gators non-offense good defense disease.   Next thing you know, Jimmy will be deep sea fishing for sharks.  :-)

Penn State Stats:
Avg. Passing Yards: 291 (22nd)
Avg. Rushing Yards: 165 (67th)

Points Scored: 39 (15th)
Points given up:  9 (#1)

ESPN Big Ten Rank: #1
AP/Coaches Poll: #2
Penn State -10 favorite

Here is what's interesting to me.  Saquon Barkley is the clear Heisman favorite right now, here is his rushing totals this year:  172, 88, 47, 211, 56, and 75.   The 211 came on the national TV game against Iowa and the 172 came against Akron.   I know he returns kicks but those are questionable rushing totals for sure.   If he can have a big game against a top defense like Michigan's he will surely start to cement that award.

Penn State plays Michigan, OSU and MSU in consecutive weeks.  OSU and MSU are on the road.

  • Michigan 4 star TE Target Mustapha Muhammad is ready to announce his college decision on Friday.  The crystal balls are 100% to the Maize and Blue.

Higdon Saves The Day

Michigan running back Karan Higdon (22) scores on the
AJ Mast AP - OT TD
Time to re-re set expectations again.  Indiana again played Michigan tough and somehow figured out a way to lose the game in overtime -  again.   Michigan is probably two inches and a few steps of Indiana's Cobb from losing this game.

Michigan is not good at offense folks.  I know its hard to believe with the offensive coaching staff that is in Ann Arbor, but its a fact.   If it wasn't for Don Brown and an unbelievable performance from Karan Higdon, Michigan would have its second disappointing loss in a row.

Michigan got nothing out of it's QB today.   JOK threw for 58 yards on 20 attempts which is an average of less then 3 yards per completion.  He also threw a terrible pick that was erased by a questionable PI call.   Let's not forget the missed bomb to DPJ and throwing into triple coverage instead of hitting a wide open Gentry on a crossing route.

Where does that leave the position?  Nowhere.   Wilton is hurt and probably done for the year, insiders are saying that Peters is nowhere near ready,  Jimmy is not ready to pull McCaffrey's redshirt, and Alex Malzone is in the witness protection program.  Your also not going to give Peters his first start in Happy Valley in a white out night game on national TV.

Spend the ride home enjoying this win and then start figuring out how they are going to compete in Happy Valley in another dreaded night game.   Fun Times!

Cheers
  • Karan Higdon = Game Ball for 200 yards and 3 TD's
  • Michigan Defense for 3.5 quarters and a goal line stand
  • Michigan's OLine for its run blocking
  • Levert Hill had a pick and a nice game
  • Quinn Nordin for 2 good field goals
  • Big Mo Hurst for a field goal block and a good game
Jeers
  • 16 penalties. Are you freaking kidding me?
  • A junior bunch of Big Ten officials that were way to involved
  • No passing game
  • 4th quarter punt return coverage
  • Giving up a 4th quarter lead
  • 3 and outs on offense
I was really surprised how well the IU offensive line played.  I expected that the Michigan defensive line would dominate the entire game.  They played well, but the IU Oline kept them in the game.   You also have to give a tip of the hat to the Michigan offensive line who run blocked well on a day where the Michigan offense couldn't throw the ball in the ocean from the beach.

A win is a win and another ugly one in Bloomington.   The bright spot on the day was the running game but that won't be enough for a W in Happy Valley.   The Michigan coaches are going to earn their pay this week.

Indiana Preview

Image result for Indiana mascot

Time: Noon
Location: Memorial Stadium
Weather: 72 no rain
TV: ABC
Stream: ESPN App
Line: Michigan -7.5

Time to lace them up again for the Wolverines.   Every time John O'Korn has played significant minutes in a game there has been extreme weather.   IU last year had snow, Purdue had extreme heat, and a monsoon last weekend.   What should we expect this week?  A sandstorm? eclipse?  acid rain?

The weather is supposed to be a warm 72 and clear.  That is clearly gamesmanship! :-)  Side Note: JOK is 1-0 in the State of Indiana and 2-0 against teams from the state!

Tale of the Tape
Mike DeBord vs. Don Brown = Donnie B
Michigan O vs. IU D = Push
Intangibles = IU
Coaching = Michigan
Need for a win = Push

This is really going to be hard to believe, but the IU defense is probably better then it's offense.   They led at half time over Ohio State before going Indiana and the defense actually played well in the Penn State game, the special teams and turnovers cost the Hoosiers the game.

How can that be?  Mike DeBord is the IU OC.  He is the guy that lead the Michigan offense for many years under Lloyd Carr.   He is guy with the 2 play playbook: run right and run left.    The IU offense is a bit different and they play really fast.   They may hike the ball the quickest I have ever seen in college football.  The Michigan defense will not be able to substitute and the personnel will have to stay focused.   They have an NFL WR in Simmie Cobbs, Jr.  and he will test the Michigan secondary.   I expect the Michigan defense to give up a couple of big plays and it will be interesting to see if the Wolverines offense can score points.

Yell, This is what we wanted last week if.......................
  • The Michigan offense scores TD's
  • Doesn't turn the ball over
  • Finds a running game
  • Turns the page in the play book
  • Plays the defense we are used to
  • Plays angry
Just shake your head and scream WTF if............
  • Michigan hasn't addressed any issues on offense
  • Michigan is asleep for a 11:00AM local time kick
  • Michigan is hung over from last weeks loss
  • Michigan can't score points
  • The defense is tired and giving up big plays
IU always plays Michigan tough.  It always seems both sides of the ball is not ready for this style of quick tempo.  I don't understand it but they always do.   The biggest miss match on the field is the Michigan Defensive Line Monsters vs. IU offensive line.   If these guys can dominate, it will help the Wolverines with 3 and outs and field position.   It will also limit Cobbs touches.

We don't need to list all of Michigan's issues on offense as that horse has been kicked all week.   Please find someone that can play RT and call a play that gets a TE or WR open.    It would also be nice to run the ball a little bit.   How about some option looks with JOK?  He will need to use his feet to get first downs and extend drives.  He has to make quick reads in the passing game and can't hold the ball like he did against State.  The IU QB is mobile and will run and scramble a bit, the Michigan defense will have to spy on him as well.

This is going to be one of those games that Michigan continues to struggle to find its rhythm on offense.   The IU defense will stack the box and invite Jimmy and John (not to deliver subs) to beat them in the passing game.  Pep what you got?  I haven't been impressed by an offensive game plan since Florida.  Who is going to step up at WR?  Protect the football and win a damn football game! Look for the special teams to have some big plays.

Michigan 24 IU 17

Big Ten Week 7 Preview

This has seemed like a long week as it always does after loss.  The best thing to get over a loss is a win and let's hope Michigan can muster one on the road.   Let's look at the other games in the league this weekend:

Big Ten Game of The Week:

Rutgers at Illinois:  Ok, this is a joke.  Between these two teams they have 3 wins and ESPN Power rankings of 13th (Rutgers) and 14th (Illinois).  Yes, Rutgers is not last.  This should be a very competitive game if you like bad football.  The line has the home team -2.5.   I think Lovie pulls this one out.   Illinois 12 Rutgers 6

Northwestern at Maryland:  Maryland has its 4th string QB running its offense and lost by a million points at OSU last weekend.  Northwestern has looked better as the season goes on, but looked terrible early on.   Maryland is a home dog at +4.   Go with the home team.  Maryland 24 Northwestern 21

Purdue at Wisconsin:  The badgers better be on upset alert but Vegas doesn't think so and is making them a -17 favorite.  Wisconsin continues to be quietly very good this year and keeps wining.   On a side note, former Wisconsin coaches are doing pretty bad this season as Brett Bielema is 2-3 and Gary Anderson got his walking papers this week at Oregon State.

Ohio State at Nebraska:  OSU after the Oklahoma game really hasn't had a difficult game.  This will be another easy walk over for the Buckeyes.  OSU -24.   OSU 31 Nebraska 14

MSU at Minnesota:  Hasn't MSU already played Western Michigan this year?  The Spartans just won their personal Super Bowl and will be on letdown alert this week as they travel to Minnesota.  Both teams are boring and whoever turns the ball over loses.  Vegas thinks it will be close with MSU -4.   MSU 13 Minnesota 6.

Wolverine Wednesday: Where Is The Drake?

Image result for drake harris michigan
Mgoblog
Drake Harris came to Michigan in the 2014 class out of Grand Rapids.   He was a two sport 4 star athlete in basketball and football and had scholarship offers from the likes of MSU in basketball and Michigan in football.  He originally committed to MSU for basketball and then changed his mind and decided to play football in Ann Arbor.

He then missed his senior season in high school due to a hamstring injury.

Drake redshirted his freshman year and played a bit as a sophomore at WR and totaled 6 catches.  His junior year he played in 10 games but only caught 2 passes all year.   Injuries has slowed his development in Ann Arbor and limited his playing time.

This year in fall camp he switched to CB in fall camp and even saw a snap in Florida game.   Then a report came out that he was joining the basketball team and his status with the football team was unknown.  Drake did average 19 points per game in high school.

Fast forward to the current state of the program.  Michigan is coming off a loss to MSU and the offense is clearly struggling.   The WR's with the injury to Black, don't seem to be getting open and Michigan is using its back-up QB.    Michigan's true freshman WR's Oliver Martin and Nico Collins has not played and seem to be heading to a red shirt year at this point.   Crawford has struggled to get open and Moe Ways is still seeing second team snaps.   DPJ has shown flashes but seems a bit raw at the WR position.  Grant Perry seems to be the only Michigan WR that is playing somewhat well at this point.  For example, Michigan decided to play kick returner Eddie McDoom at WR with the game on the line with only seconds to go.  We know how that turned out.

Jimmy mentioned yesterday that Drake Harris is back at WR.   Why even mention that?  Is Michigan going to play him at WR against IU?  Do they need a deep threat?  Drake did run a 4.4 before he hurt his hamstring.   Drake from the limited snaps I have seen of him, does have good hands and maybe that is the #1 reason he is switching back.

Either way, I'm still waiting for him to break out and lets hope its this weekend.  I hope he remembers which meeting room to go to during practice this week.

Michigan Tuesday: Jimmy Is Moving on to IU

Jimmy spoke at his regular Monday press conference.  He did confirm that Wilton has some cracks in his vertebrae and is out multiple weeks.  Other then that, he didn't really address much from what happened on Saturday night.

  • Didn't address the right tackle situation
  • For most questions, he responded with something like this:  “Yes. Again, we’ll go through it, make corrections, make improvements, and move on.”
One thought on IU this week.  They are playing better defense, yes Barkley had some highlight plays with a kick off return but he was also held to 56 yards rushing on 20 carries.

  • Former Wisconsin head coach Gary Anderson has left his position as the Oregon State head coach and waived his right to the rest of his contact which was worth 12m.   That is one hell of a concession!   This program has been a mess for a few years.  Remember that Brady Hoke was a candidate for this job before they hired Anderson.

  • MSU alum and ESPN personality, Jemele Hill was suspended by ESPN for two weeks for violating ESPN's social media policy twice.

Tech Gap returns to Western Maryland for 2017

Guest feature: Autumn Becker works with the Allegany College of Maryland. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter.

The Western Maryland IT Center of Excellence invites you to visit the picturesque autumn mountains in Allegany County for Tech at the Gap ’17: Leading the Charge on October 24, 2017.

Tech at the Gap is a one-day conference for web developers, system admins, network and security specialists, managers, and others in or around the IT industry. Now an annual conference, the day will build off the momentum of last year’s event, which hosted more than 50 regional technology companies with attendees coming from Baltimore, Morgantown, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Northern Virginia.

Governor Larry Hogan kicked off last year’s event with opening remarks.

“Maryland is absolutely leading the way in Information Technology, and Western Maryland truly is the next frontier,” said Governor Hogan. “Our state, county, and municipal leaders are working tirelessly to develop tangible incentives to encourage more IT businesses to locate in Western Maryland. We are fully committed to creating a culture here, and throughout our state, where these companies can continue to grow and thrive.”

Our morning keynote speakers will motive and inspire attendees to be leaders in the IT industry. Jeff Smith (Oracle) will present on the internal and external challenges Oracle faced to not only successfully transition the company to a new business model, but to become stronger in the marketplace as a result. Jean White (Franklin Covey) will provide insight into proactive leadership and guide attendees to discover the mindset and skills needed to build a foundation for effective leadership and develop practices to positively influence the actions, as well as the results, of a team.

The afternoon will offer a variety of breakout sessions in three separate tracks, including Innovation, Development, and Systems Admin/Networking. Breakout presenters include Luke Cooper, founder of Fixt; Ryan Hamerski, Synergist Computing president; and Joseph Muniz, security researcher with Cisco.

Guests will also have the opportunity to network with other professionals and vendors as they learn about the latest tools and processes in the industry and how to apply them at the workplace. Find the full lineup and sponsor information on the event website.

The conference is being held at the Rocky Gap Casino Resort, which is nestled in the mountains of Western Maryland where you’ll find spectacular scenery and recreational activities at Rocky Gap State Park. Michigan Monday: Needs To Move On To Indiana

The Michigan fan base exploded on Saturday night.  Many started to question game plans, play calling, formations, coaching,  2 point conversions, etc.   There was a lot to chew on after that debacle on Saturday night.   Jimmy and his staff have a lot of work to do as the schedule only gets tougher as the season continues towards Thanksgiving.

Let's take a look at IU:

IU is 2-2 with a couple of lopsided loses to PSU and OSU.   They also had the FIU game cancelled due to Irma.   They are coming off a 27-0 win over Charleston Southern last weekend.

Pass Yards: 260 per (46th)
Rush Yards: 149 per (79th)

Points Scored: 30 per (69th)
Points Against: 26 per (59th)

ESPN Big 10 Power Ranking:  8th

As you know, IU plays fast break basketball on grass.  This will be a 11:00AM kick off locally and if the Wolverines are sleep walking again in the first half, they will find themselves down a couple scores.

---------

Like I'm sure many of you have wondered all Sunday.  What the hell is going on with Michigan's offense?   Here are my concerns:
  • It's hard to see this on TV but it looks like Michigan WR's are not getting open.  This on the WR's and the play calling.   In a couple of those picks, it seemed they had two WR's in the same place.
  • Why can't we teach these 4 star offensive lineman how to block?  Michigan has two offensive line coaches in Drevno and Frey.   What is the deal here?
  • Is Pep helping or hurting?  Where is the West Coast offense we were told was coming this year?  The Michigan offense is predictable and not at all effective.  Is the offense/formations too complicated?
Someone pointed this out on Mgoblog but why haven't we seen more of a demonstrative sideline coaching from Harbaugh?   Does he think this young team couldn't handle it?

I also think Michigan miss managed the storm.  The forecasters predicted the storm very accurately and Michigan should have considered going for two after their TD in the second half.

With all that, the coaches didn't turn the ball over 5 times.   That is on the players and they have to play better as well.   Only one turnover was done by a young player, sophomore Sean McKeon the rest were given up by upper classman.

Lots to work on this week.

A Monsoon of Mistakes

You want to know why I hate night games?  Because Jim Harbaugh does.  He prefers to play football at 1:00 on Saturday but the TV networks prefer to highlight Michigan games at night.   Michigan will have to play Penn State at night in two weeks and I wouldn't be surprised if the outcome is the same shit we saw tonight.  Jim has won 1 night game at Michigan and that was against Rutgers.  So that really wasn't a game was it.   They say that your team is a reflection of your coach, he hates night games and so does his team.

The play of the game was the Ty Isaac fumble.  Michigan was about to run the ball down the Spartans throat and Ty coughs it up and gives the Spartans life, when they knew they were out matched in pretty much everyway.   That one drop of the football changed the entire game.   Then Michigan sealed its faith by playing terribly from there on out.

The mistakes were countless.
  • 5 turnovers are you serious?
  • Defensive penalties to keep MSU TD drives alive
  • An offensive holding penalty to wipe out a TD
  • Dropped pass on the final drive
  • Questionable play calling
  •  and so on and so on

I hated the play calling in the red zone on the first drive.   Two fade routes to a TE and slot WR?  It's clear this team misses Jedd Fisch.

What about trying to pass in the worst of the storm?   Shotgun?  What the hell are the Michigan coaches thinking?  Of course, MSU knows you are going to run the ball but you also can't throw it more then 5 yards down the field.   Run 3 times and punt if you have to .  Don't try to throw in a monsoon.   Try to win the field position battle.

Michigan played the game that MSU was hoping and the Spartans got an assist from the weather.   Michigan continued to shoot itself in the foot and MSU stood there and watched.   The Spartans didn't make many mistakes and Michigan had a boat full.   The MSU offense almost didn't even participate in the second half.

O'Korn didn't play well but I give him a small tip of the hat for trying to do anything in that storm.  I disagreed with Herbie, I wished he would have tucked the ball and run more then trying to find WR's downfield.   I think the Michigan offense is a mess right now, even when the weather isn't winning the game.

This team is now at another cross roads with trips to IU, PSU and Wisconsin ahead.  Not to mention OSU at home.    Michigan lost to a mediocre team tonight at best, which doesn't say much about our team right now.

I can't get my head around that MSU had an 11 point lead in the first half and protected that lead the rest of the night.  Harbaugh and his elite staff got out coached by Mark Dantonio tonight.   The MSU coaches played the weather perfectly.

Someone really needs to find Dantonio's fairy godmother or voodoo doll.  His last two trips to the Big House have been something out of Dr. Seuss.

Michigan State Preview

Image result for MSU mascot funny
Gallaryhip.com
Time: 7:30 PM EST
Location: Big House
Weather: 76 but 70% of rain at 10:00
TV: ABC
Line: Michigan -10.5

This will be the first night game in the long history of this storied rivalry.  Both fan bases should be "juiced" up and I expect a loud Big House for the first night game in the Harbaugh era.

Michigan is 4-0 and Sparty is a surprising 3-1 with a nice win over Iowa last weekend.    With the trouble this program got in over the summer, many thought MSU would be a dumpster fire this season.   They are far from that but won't challenge Bama or Clemson anytime soon.

Tale of the Tape
Michigan Run Game vs. MSU D = Push
MSU offense vs. Michigan D = Michigan
Talent = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Intangibles = Michigan
Special Teams = Michigan

Mark Dantonio has maybe done one of his best coaching jobs to date.  This team is seriously lacking talent but they are finding a way to win.   MSU's only loss is to ND where they turned the ball over too many times to win the game.   On offense, they can't run the ball from the RB position, they dink and dunk you in the passing game, their QB is their leading rusher.    On defense, the Spartans sell out to stop the run as they have walk-on's in the secondary.

Yell,  let's party and are the bars still open? if......................
  • John O'Korn is the solution we have been looking for at QB
  • Michigan plays angry because of the "punt"
  • The Michigan defense is shutting down Brian Lewerke from running
  • Michigan wins the turnover battle
  • The offense passes to run, not run to pass
  • The offensive line shows improvement from improvement week
Yell, are the bars still open?  I need a drink! if...........
  • MSU is winning the time of possession with it's dink and dunk offense
  • Michigan keeps MSU in the game with turnovers
  • The Michigan offense continues to run into a brick wall in the running game
  • JOK is struggling
  • MSU catches Michigan with a trick play for a TD
We know this is MSU's Super Bowl and Mark Dantonio will be throwing every thing they have to beat the Wolverines.   Their #1 threat on offense is Brian Lewerke who is the teams leading rusher.  He is the guy you think you have sacked on 3rd and 6th that finds a way to scramble for a 1st down.

If you measure this game with a computer or even look at the guys off the bus, this is a big win for the Wolverines.   Michigan has a new QB starting and the offense line has been struggling.    The Wolverines will need a strong performance from each group as MSU lives off turnovers.   This will also be the best defense the Spartans have seen all year.

We will see miss direction, fake punts, and throw back routes from MSU.  They will open the play book to everything.  Many of the Wolverines will remember "the punt" and will play very angry on Saturday night.   The Michigan Tight Ends and young WR's will have a big day as JOK will be throwing the ball around the yard to try to take advantage of the lack of experience in the MSU secondary.  The Michigan offense will then knock out the Spartans with a running game from Ty Isaac and Chris Evans in the second half (with the holes the passing game provides).  Protect the ball and win this game!
Michigan 31 MSU 13
