Pirate ships set sail in Baltimore

This month we celebrated Baltimore City’s newest adventure, complete with pirate swords, bagpipes, and a blast from the USS Constellation’s cannon.

Twelve solar powered pirate ships are officially open for business at the Inner Harbor. The fleet, owned and managed by the Living Classrooms Foundation, will employ and inspire 50 young people with job training and hands-on education. Baltimore’s own Premier Rides helped design the ships, which can hold up to six pirates at one time.

Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill was on deck with Historic Ships in Baltimore Captain Chris Rowsom, Living Classrooms President James Bond, and Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh to set sail the Inner Harbor’s first new tourist attraction in five years.

Michigan Thursday Part 2: A Good Day For The Basketball Program

3 pieces of good news got me to take a few minutes to write about the positive vibes around the football and basketball program.

Lets start with B-Ball:

Charles Matthews is heading back to Michigan and will not enter the NBA Draft this year.   After not being invited to the NBA Combine, this was really the only decision.   Yes, he could of stayed in the draft and been a late second round or even a free agent but that would of been a couple of years of development in the G-League at best.   Now he gets to lead Michigan, which suddenly looks like a pretty decent squad next year.   Welcome Back Charles!

So are you ready to feel old?  Jalen Wilson committed to Michigan Basketball last night as he was named after Jalen Rose.   Next thing your going to tell me is that Juan Howard is the Pistons  head coach! :-) (hopefully!)

Jalen is 6'7 and 200 pound small forward.  He is a high 4 star and ranked in the top 40 to both Rivals and 24/7.  Jalen picked Michigan over his finalists of Baylor, Kansas, Marquette, Oklahoma State, and UCLA.  But if you think about it, he was always destined to wear the Maize and Blue after being named after the host of Get Up on ESPN.  It seems the Wolverines always had Mom's support!

Jalen is an athletic forward that shoots the ball well and plays defensive.  He will fit well into Coach B's offensive as Coach will work on his shooting touch from 3 point range.   This is blue chip recruit and not under the radar as guys are starting to notice the success Coach B has had at Michigan and the number of guys he is putting in the NBA.

Welcome Jalen!

Now the surprise of the day:

Michigan Football got a surprise commit from Cincinnati (OH) Moeller 2019 offensive lineman Zach Carpenter.  Zach had visited Ann Arbor last month and was offered on the visit.   Zach knew Coach Warriner from Minnesota and was quickly added to Michigan's board.  Zach had a bunch of crystal balls to Clemson and none of the services were predicting him to Michigan.

Zach is 310 pounds and 6'5 and projected to be a guard in college.  He is ranked as a high 3 star with offers from the likes of Clemson, Arkansas, UK, MSU, Louisville, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, and more.

Zach joins Karsen Barnhart Trente Jones, Jack Stewart and Nolan Rumler on the offensive line in the 2019 class, which mean the coaches now can be very picky about adding another player to this group.
Welcome Zach!

West Coast have been using cable

Hi,

Many racers out here on the West Coast have been using cable steering “forever”, but I had to be contrarian and use rack-n-pinions and tillers. Until… the Beach Party Buggy arrived. This vehicle was built with fabulous craftsmanship by professional fabricators, but they were not vehicle dynamics engineers. I converted the Buggy from four wheels with no suspension to three wheels (which needs no suspension). Once the front fork was mounted, it was obvious that this was the perfect opportunity to try steering by steel cables. I installed a pulley on top of the front fork, and a hand crank between the front seats. Such an arrangement needs a lot of “gearing”, so the pulley up front is something like 9 inches in diameter, and there is no pulley at all on the hand crank – just the ¾ inch shaft itself. And it still could use more reduction. Many racers use a bicycle rim for the pulley.
Installing this, the cable needed to be wrapped many times around the shaft, and I tried to wrap it in a tight orderly spiral. But this cable was too stiff, and I wound up happy that the cable stayed on the shaft at all while I tightened the turnbuckle. I left it on the loose side, because the cable would obviously be “tripping over itself” when I turned the handle.
Guess what…? It worked great, right off the bat! The cable is slowly being chewed apart where it goes thru the hole in the shaft, but this can be easily monitored and the cable replaced as needed. The slack I allow in the cable so it can wrap over itself on the shaft without over-tightening causes no trouble at our low speeds.

Thanks

Michigan Memorial Day Monday: New 2018 PWO Offensive Lineman?

Side Note:  I will be taking some time off this week, so you will be treated to some of Michigan's 2017 season game highlights each day this week.  I will pick only the wins, because nobody wants to revisit the loses again.

Since today is Memorial Day, I thought it would be fitting to start with Air Force.

Before we do that there is a unique situation about a potential new PWO for the 2018 class, offensive guard recruit Griffin Korican.  Griffen was a 2 star prospect and has signed to be a PWO at Oregon State but has been in discussion with Coach Warinner.   Griffin is from Seattle and is 6'5 and 295 pounds.  Per Land of 10:

“I signed a preferred walk-on with Oregon State and during my spring break [in April], I visited Michigan and talked with Coach [Ed] Warinner and he told me I could do a PWO [preferred walk-on] if they could get me into the school,” Korican said. “Long story short, they got me into Michigan and now I’m making a decision on where to go.”

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman said he is “pretty much” committed to Michigan, but is taking a visit on June 2 to solidify his feelings for himself and his family.

“It’s more for my parents, honestly,” Korican said. “They want to meet and talk with the coaches and I want to meet with some of the players and talk with the coaches again to make sure I’m making the right choice.”

As a 2-star prospect, Korican had offers from San Diego and the Colorado School of Mines before taking the walk-on offer from Oregon State. However, he thinks Michigan gives him a better chance to be successful.

“I feel like Michigan is the only opportunity I have earned where I will compete against the best every day, which will make me into the best player I can become,” he said. “I also really like Coach Warinner because of his old-school mentality and toughness he instills in his players.

Welcome Big Man!

  • Congratulations to former Michigan Wolverine Quinton Washington who is on the Pit Crew of Indy 500 Champ Will Power!

Michigan Thursday: Basketball Workouts and A Commit Is Now a 4 Star

Charles Matthews has a decision to make in about a week.  On or before May 30th he will need to make a decision about staying in the NBA Draft or going back to Michigan.   He has been working out with NBA team and with the latest workout for the Nuggets said the following:

“Really just trying to wear all my options out,” Matthews said while attending a workout with the Denver Nuggets this week. “Basically go through all of the workouts that I have scheduled and just reconcile with my family and do what we feel is best. …
“It has been really good, especially if I do come back to school,” Matthews said. “Get some good experience to know what this process is like. If I choose to stay in, raise my confidence overall.

I would be shocked if he stayed in the draft, because I don't think he would be drafted and if he were it would be in the second round.  Which is pretty much a free ticket to the G-League.  (Which some are considering better NBA training then college basketball)

Speaking of workouts: Duncan Robinson had a workout with the Lakers this week.  Unfortunately, he doesn't have any eligibility left and will look to get a summer league invite or maybe head overseas.

  • Michigan OT commit Karsen Barnhart is now a 4 star on 24/7.   His recent camp performances raised his ranking.

  • George Karlaftis, DE from West Lafayette who committed to Purdue but still is flirting with Michigan and will probably do an official, is now the #12 ranked player in the nation.

  • Less then a 100 days out, Michigan is still a 1 point favorite against ND.

14 Maryland companies named to annual Cybersecurity 500

Cybersecurity Ventures has released its first annual Cybersecurity 500 list, including 14 of Maryland’s hottest and most innovative companies.

The rankings, which were announced at the Cyber Investing Summit earlier this month, feature sectors ranging from social risk management, to data encryption, to cyber defense and digital forensics.

The companies named to the official Cybersecurity 500 are:

  • Lockheed Martin (Bethesda)
  • Tenable (Columbia)
  • Arxan (Bethesda)
  • ZeroFOX (Baltimore)
  • KEYW (Hanover)
  • Cybrary (Greenbelt)
  • IronNet Cybersecurity (Fulton)
  • Protenus (Baltimore)
  • TrustedKnight (Annapolis)
  • Terbium Labs (Baltimore)
  • Sonatype (Fulton)
  • EnVeil (Fulton)
  • BlueVoyant (College Park)
  • Silent Circle (Columbia)

“I am proud to see 14 of our most innovative businesses named to this year’s Cybersecurity 500,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “These cutting-edge companies help protect our computers, our businesses, our identities, our federal agencies, and beyond – and we are excited to see Cybersecurity Ventures recognize our talented tech workforce right here in Maryland.”

Two companies named to this year’s annual list are recent additions to Maryland’s IT and cybersecurity industry. BlueVoyant’s corporate headquarters is positioned in New York City, but with help from state funding, the company established a global cyber analytics center in Prince George’s County earlier this year. Silent Circle moved its headquarters to Howard County in 2017 after hiring CEO Gregg Smith, who previously led the Baltimore cybersecurity firm OptioLabs.

Michigan Tuesday: QB Transfers Everywhere!

See the source image
Clemson Rivals
Jimmy pulled in Ole Miss 5 Star QB Shea Patterson this winter and now it seems another 5 Star is on his way to the Big Ten.

Hunter Johnson a 5 Star QB in the 2017 class has decided to transfer from Clemson and is looking at a few Big Ten Schools.   Hunter saw playing time getting tight at Clemson with Senior QB Kelly Bryant and Freshman Trevor Lawrence on campus.    Hunter was the #2 Pro-Style QB in the 2017 and is from Indianapolis.    Most expect the top two schools he is considering is Purdue and Northwestern.   I wouldn't be surprised if IU also got a visit.

If Jeff Brohm gets a 5 star QB that could be a lethal combination.  As long as Jeff is still there to see it through, reports are he turned down the Tennessee job last off season.

Last year Hunter threw for 21-of-27 for 234 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

  • Speaking of QB transfers: OSU's Burrows is transferring to LSU

  • Remember QB Blake Barnett from Alabama?  He transferred to Arizona State and recently enrolled at South Florida.

William Gilbert Lightner is An Individual Who is Known For Protecting Local Animals

With time there are certainly countless cases of animal exploitation that are not actually giving justice, predominantly on dogs. Fortunately, there are animal rescue centers all across the globe that give these dogs one more chance to live their lives in a happy way. Some even end up in decent families or even with the government force, working as defense dogs. If you want to support out at the local animal shelter like William Gilbert Lightner then here are a few things that you can do.

William Gilbert Lightner is an individual who is known for protecting local animals who come about to be in danger. William presently resides in Marietta, Georgia. After wandering everywhere, the main emphasis of Mr. William Gilbert was to open an animal shelter for animals. Because one day he saw three 3 Labrador puppies were searching for food near the garbage. This makes him so much emotional and after that William runs an animal shelter names as ‘Lightner’s rescue shelter’. William always some water bottles with him in his car for the pups in the nastiest possible physical state. He very well knows that ‘Persons in Marietta really don’t give any attention to those puppies. They don’t consider them as living things what if they are left out in warm summers without nutrition and water for the whole day.’ says Mr. Lightner. Apart from this he even works as an audio engineer at his home-based studio. He also works with some local musicians from Marietta. If you actually want to help these animal shelters you can keep these things in mind:

Donate food

Most animal shelters only depend on help to keep the animals they saved food and happy. So it’s good to donate dog food every month to keep the puppies in the good health and well nurtured. It's also well to donate foods since it’s somewhat you know the rescue center wants and it will be put to decent use.

Adopt one of the animals there

You can even adopt a dog from William Gilbert Lightner animal shelter instead of going to the pet shop and receiving a dog there, you can benefit out the rescue center by adopting one of the pups there. You will be happy to see the lifestyle and behavior of dogs there. It is one of the clean and hygienic animal shelters in the area.

William Gilbert Lightner realized that he did a bit useful thing along with her girlfriend by opening this rescue shelter for animals. A single incidence in his life made him open an animal shelter because there are numerous pets on the road that don’t have persons to pay attention to them. We have lots of thrilling things to see and hear at Pet houses. We hope you enjoy your visit to Lightner’s rescue shelter and will share this resource with other domestic animal lovers. We promise you will always find an affluence of resources and information for your special pet with him.

  • The coaches are spending some time in GR and have offered East Kentwood - OL Dallas Fincher and DE Bryce Mostella in the 2020 class.

  • Next Year's trip has now been confirmed, the team is going to South Africa including a Safari and trips to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

  • Les Miles was on campus this weekend.  No word on where his son is transferring to, I don't it expect it to be Ann Arbor.

  • Michigan Softball lost twice this weekend to ND and is out of the tournament.

  • Mo tested very well at the NBA Combine and he was up 10 pounds from last year at the same time.

Michigan Friday: News and Notes

  • Michigan has offered Kansas City Rockhurst 2019 four-star OL Danielson Ike

  • Coach B had the team over to his house to spread a few yards of mulch.  Nice work coach!  The key is having a pitch folk!  #been there done that!

  • Mo Wagner's NBA draft status seems to be on the rise, we will see what happens after this weekend's NBA Combine.

  • Warde Manuel wants both Coach B and Jimmy to retire at Michigan.  Couldn't agree more.

  • As the season winds down, Michigan Baseball is on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

  • Peppers and his Cleveland Browns will be on HBO's Hard Knocks this pre-season.

BHB Deep Thoughts:  Scott Frost in his playing career and in his coaching career has won two disputed National Championships.  One was split by the media and coaches polls and the second one was self pro-claimed.  Since he is at Nebraska now, maybe he should just send the 1997 trophy up to Ann Arbor and close down the 97 debate.

Celebrating company milestones in Maryland

It’s hard to believe we’re nearly halfway through 2018 – and there’s no signs of slowing down any time soon. From San Francisco and Mexico City to Dubai and Singapore, the Commerce team has been traveling the world to promote our Open for Business climate and show off our assets to international companies and industry leaders.

But in between all the meetings and tradeshows, we haven’t forgotten about our companies right here at home. Below, we are highlighting 15 local businesses and educational institutions that are celebrating successes and milestone anniversaries in Maryland. Ranging from 10 years to more than a century, we are proud that these businesses call Maryland home.

Leading the way with major recent milestones is Morgan State University, which celebrated 150 years in 2017. We visited President David Wilson and the Morgan team earlier this year to express our gratitude for this Carnegie-classified doctoral research institution. As one of the nation’s premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Morgan continues its commitment to students by focusing on purpose, progress, and promise.

Following close behind is The Terminal Corporation with 125 years in business. This Baltimore-based company specializes in distribution and logistics, ensuring safety and on-time arrival, no matter the time or day. After a century in the biz, Terminal has mastered the moving game and continues to shine with its talented workforce.

Keep an eye out for more exciting anniversaries this year. If your company is celebrating a milestone, be sure to send us an email with the details.

Michigan Thursday: Big Mo Signs His Contract

raiders.com
Maurice Hurst didn't get much buzz prior to the NFL Draft.  He had an EKG with some questions at the combine and then it seemed like he fell off the earth.  He was cleared by doctors at Michigan and Harvard and it still barely made a ripple in the media or with NFL teams.

Then the draft kicked off and one of the best rated defensive players by Pro Football Focus continued to slip rounds and days of the draft.   It seems many teams took Mo off their boards and as the rounds ticked away, we wondered who was going to pick the first round talent.

Oakland and new coach Jon Gruden was the one and they got a steal in the 5th round.  Mo will prove everyone wrong and play with a Tom Brady chip on his shoulder his entire career.

Mo signed a new 4 year $2.7M contract with the Raiders on Wednesday.   That is a drop in the bucket on what he should be making, but the big pay day will come with his second contract after he proves that he is a quality NFL player and his heart holds up.   Mo will go through heart testing every year to make sure everything is ok.

We wish him all the best!

  • Michigan yesterday offered 2019 4 Star Alabama CB Jaydon Hill

  • Michigan also offered 2020 five-star linebacker prospect Justin Flowe on Wednesday

Wolverine Wednesday: Michigan vs. Villanova Rematch in November

Michigan will travel to Villanova for a rematch of the National Championship game on November 14th.   The game will be part of the Big 10 vs. Big East match-up called the Gavitt Games.   Here is a free tip, D-Up the shooting guard with red hair.

Quick update on Charles Matthews and his NBA Draft status.  Charles has worked out for some teams and still hopes to get a late invite to the NBA combine in Chicago, if someone cancels or can't patriciate due to injury.   He has until the end of the month to make a decision to stay in the NBA draft or head back to Ann Arbor for another season.   The NBA Combine kicks off today and goes through Sunday.   If Charles doesn't make it into the Combine, he should head back to school, as it would be the exception to be drafted and not be invited to the Combine.

  • Speaking of Michigan Basketball, they are looking to extend Coach B's contract.   Which is a good thing!

  • Michigan Basketball is also be participating in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off in November with the likes of George Washington, Providence, South Carolina, Holy Cross, Norfolk State, Siena and Stony Brook.

  • Long Commit Watch!  2019 Georgia 3 star CB DJ Turner II will announce his decision on 6/25.  He has offers from the likes of Florida, Auburn, CAL, Clemson, FSU, LSU, Georgia, ND, Stanford, PSU, Oklahoma and more.   That sounds like a 4 star list of schools to me.   DJ is 5'11 and 170 pounds.   He has a 100% crystal balls to Michigan.

The 2017 Preakness Stakes generated nearly $40 million

With the Kentucky Derby now in the rear view mirror, anticipation is building for the second jewel in horseracing’s Triple Crown – the legendary Preakness Stakes, which is now in its 143rd year at the historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Horse enthusiasts far and wide will be breaking out their big hats and seersucker suits on Saturday, May 19 for a day steeped in tradition.

While the race has always been an outstanding opportunity to market Maryland’s unparalleled assets to a global audience, the Preakness Stakes is also a significant economic generator for Baltimore City and the entire state of Maryland. An economic impact study produced by the Maryland Department of Commerce‘s Office of Research showed that in 2017, the Preakness drew a record-breaking crowd of more than 140,000 to Old Hilltop and generated nearly $40 million in total economic impact, which includes everything from hotels and transportation to restaurants and retail.

Among the study’s other highlights:

  • Roughly 500 full-time equivalent jobs and $14.3 million in salaries were generated by visitor spending on the Preakness.
  • Expenditures and employment from Preakness race day operations and visitor spending generated $2.6 million in state and local taxes.
  • Race-day betting in Maryland increased by six percent compared to 2016’s race, resulting in more than $5 million total in-state bets placed.

Michigan Monday: Matt Millen Needs A New Heart

Matt Millen is a person that Detroit Lions fans are not really fond of.   He took over as the Lions president with his only qualification being that he played the sport and was decent on TV as a color man.   After 7 years, he drafted a ton of wide receivers and flamed out during the 0-16 season.  Detroit Lions fans believe he set the franchise back even longer then that.

Matt is also a Penn State alum and very proud of his program.  He now works for BTN and its clear that he played at PSU when he does a Nittany Lion's game.   Which of course, does not make him a favorite of Michigan fans either.

It's time to put those feelings aside, as Matt is fighting for his life with a rare disease that will cause him to need a heart transplant.   From a Peter King SI article:

Millen’s down around 50 pounds in the past year, chasing a cure for a disease called amyloidosis that is particularly evil: He needs debilitating chemotherapy now to fight amyloid, a rogue protein that attacks organs (his heart, in this case). Because the amyloid is attacking his heart, he’ll eventually need a heart transplant to have a chance to live many more years.

Lee’s (Millen's Doctor) testing proved that this disastrous protein, amyloid, was being produced in Millen’s bone marrow and was being deposited in the area around his heart. The amyloid is produced in the bone marrow and in Millen’s case, has traveled to his heart walls, making the heart less elastic and unable to perform the necessary pumping for .healthy heart function. Treatments including chemotherapy could manage Millen’s symptoms but not cure the disease.

I would recommend reading the article, as it's very well written.  Matt hopes to continue calling games this year if he is able to.   Good luck to him and his family.

  • Michigan QB commit Cade McNamara earned an Elite 11 finals invite this weekend.

  • Michigan Coaches Mattison and Moore were out to watch Kelvin Hicks run track this weekend.  That seemed to make a big impact on the talented 4 star DE.

  • Jalen Wilson a big visitor for the basketball program was offered by coach B this weekend while in A2.  He then tweeted out a picture of Jalen Rose announcing his offer.

  • JT Rogan - Jimmy's director of communications is leaving his role for another opportunity.

  • Jake Butt is back 100% and ready to start his pro career after missing his first year due to the ACL tear in the Orange Bowl.  Jake is even up 8 pounds and feels great.

Michigan Friday: Jimmy Would Like to Compensate His Players With Amazon Stock

Jimmy last night got the key to a city in Ohio.  Yes, Toledo gave the key to its city to Michigan Football's leader during a fund raiser for individuals who can't afford legal aide.

Jimmy wants to take the $2M they were paid by Amazon for their behind the scenes series and give it to the players after they graduate in some type of Amazon Stock grant.

"We're exploring that right now. Can we get $1,000 of stock in Amazon possibly for deferred compensation?" he asked Thursday night while speaking at a fundraiser in Toledo. "... We're just kind of wondering if it's possible. We don't know if it is yet. We're just asking the question."

"I think that 1 percent [of high school football players] that is able to play college football to get their education and get their degree is what's best for them," he said. "That's a lot and it should be valued as such. I worry about making them employees for the biggest reason, I believe, is because of that ability to be taxed."

Coach is afraid if you make the players employees then they could be taxed on their scholarship which would create a huge tax bill every year for each athlete.   For example, the latest report I have seen is Michigan out of state tuition and room/board is $60,000 per year.

On a side note, do you think Jimmy follows the stock market?  Amazon right now is trading for over $1,600 a share.

Many jobs these days have stock options, why shouldn't college athletes?  :-)

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra tours U.K. and Ireland

Maryland’s music scene will shine on the world stage this summer, as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra travels abroad for a tour through the United Kingdom and Ireland.

From August 21-30, the BSO will make stops in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, making itself known as a strong cultural ambassador for the city of Baltimore and the entire state of Maryland.

The tour will kick off with two nights at the Edinburgh International Festival, and end with a performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, marking the BSO’s first-ever performance in Ireland. In between, the orchestra will make its debut at the BBC’s Henry Woods Promenade Concerts – otherwise known as The Proms – a summer series of classical music performances held at the famed Royal Albert Hall in London. The BSO will become the only American orchestra to perform at the Edinburgh Festival, and one of two to ever perform at The Proms.

This nine-day, four-concert tour will be director Marin Alsop’s international debut with the BSO, and the orchestra’s first international tour in nearly 15 years. Alsop became the first woman to head a major American orchestra in 2007.

The Baltimore Symphony has been recognized as one of America’s top orchestras for more than a century. While Maryland’s preeminent orchestra is already internationally known, the upcoming tour is sure to increase admiration and respect not only for the BSO, but for Maryland and its many activities related to recreation, culture, and arts.

The BSO is the state’s largest cultural organization, with performances reaching more than 350,000 attendees throughout Maryland every year. To learn more and purchase tickets for upcoming performances, visit www.bsomusic.org.

Michigan Thursday: The Detroit Lions Like Former U of M Quarterbacks

Jake Rudock has found a nice role as the Detroit Lions back-up QB.  He has really looked good in the pre-season and went 3-5 for 24 yards and 1 pick in his only time during the regular season.   There was even some talk that other teams had inquired about Jake's availability in a trade.   Jake seems comfortable in this role, even though the Lions signed Matt Cassel in the off season.   Some teams carry 3 QB's and some only carry 2, I expect the Lions will carry 3.   The New York Jets have carried 4 over the past few years.

As you know, if you don't get drafted you want to sign with a team as a free agent.   If that doesn't happen, then you hope to get a camp invite.   That has happened for both John O'Korn and Shane Morris for the Detroit Lions.  Both have little to no chance of making the team, but they might be able to impress during camp which could make them attractive to other teams.

I would actually like to see both try out for the new league that is starting after the Super Bowl or maybe the CFL.   Either way, this is a good shot for both of them and I wish them all the luck!

  • Michigan has offered 2019 RB Isaiah Spiller

  • Michigan seems to be offering a ton of 2020 guys right now.  Which seems like its 10 years in the future. :-)

  • 2019 Muskegon OL Anthony Bradford committed to LSU yesterday.  He didn't hold a Michigan offer.

Wolverine Wednesday: Love From Paris

In only the way Jimmy can, he sent recruits post cards from Paris:

Well done sir, well done.

  •  Remember when I mentioned that recent commit Karsen Barnhart‏ should be ascending up the recruiting ladder?  He just got offered by USC on his Nike Opening and UA camps from last weekend..  His 4th star is should be right around the corner!  He is solid to U of M of course!

  • 4 star DE Michael Fletcher will visit Ann Arbor officially on June 22, sounds like he is an MSU lean currently.

  • 4 star DB from Florida Josh Sanguinetti is considering a Michigan official.

  • Instate 2020 prospect, four-star guard Justin Rogers is very high on Michigan and Penn State also just offered.

  • Wichita State Basketball transfer Austin Reaves will visit Ann Arbor this weekend.

Eastern Shore’s Choptank Transport expands to Baltimore

Last month, Choptank Transport announced its expansion to Baltimore City’s Federal Hill neighborhood where it will establish its latest sales office.

For more than 20 years, Choptank Transport has specialized in shipping a variety of freight via road, rail, air, and sea. Headquartered in the town of Preston in Caroline County, the company has worked tirelessly to achieve their goal of getting customers the best rate and fastest delivery time for both refrigerated and dry products.

The company’s president and CEO, Geoff Turner, said the move is a direct response to Choptank’s growing business.

“We are excited to begin hiring for this new location,” Turner said. “Our growing customer base has created the need to offer additional services and add a larger workforce. We are fortunate to be a business that offers career seekers ample opportunities for advancement and financial success.”

The expansion is expected to be completed in June and will include a new, 4,000-square-foot office space. Choptank also has locations in Tampa, Dallas, Denver, and Atlanta. This third-party logistics company is part of a $166 billion dollar U.S. industry that is seeing rapid growth as demand increases.

Michigan Tuesday: News and Notes

  • So it seems the report about Charles Matthews being invited to the NBA Combine were incorrect and now he has officially not been invited.   In the NBA, that is a big deal and pretty much assures that he will be back to Michigan.

  • Poggi has signed a free agent deal with the Oakland Raiders, I hope he makes the team.  Gruden does love him some hard nosed players!

  • OSU QB Joe Burrow is transferring from OSU, he was expected to be the #2 behind Haskins who showed out during the Michigan game.   Martell is now the #2 QB.

  • 2019 4 star Stephen Herron Jr. who was an early commit to Michigan and then reports starting saying that he was/is going to flip to Stanford, says he is fully committed to the Wolverines.   I would still keep an eye on this one and an eye on any letters from the Stanford admissions office to his house.

  • Sam Webb believes that Karsen Barnhart did so well at the Nike Opening and UA camps last weekend, that he might be heading towards a 4th star.

Michigan Monday: Zavier Getting To Work on His Jumper

See the source image
Detroit News
Since Michigan is now a basketball school (and there really isn't much going on the with the football program), I thought I would highlight this 24/7 article on Zavier Simpson and his father who is working on his shooting during the off season.   Zavier's father Quincy is an AAU coach:

"We're just working on the shot and that's really it," Simpson said. "I want him to get a more consistent shot. I think if he does that, he's going to have a lot of basketball in his life. We're going back to square one. Sitting in the chair in front of the rim, he's at home right now, and we're doing those things right now. I believe in the 21-day method, that's just me. I believe it takes 21 days for the muscle and the mind to work together. As soon as you don't make shots or as soon as something don't feel right, you always resort to the old ways. We're just going through muscle memory for 21 days and if we can get through that 21st day, I believe he will have a special career at Michigan."

  •  Michigan 2019 OT commit Karsen Barnhart was at the UA Camp in Chicago this past weekend.

  • Congratulations to the Michigan Softball Team on another Big Ten Championship!

  • Ohio 2019 five-star DE Zach Harrison says Michigan is in his top 5.  All the insiders believe he is an OSU lock.

  •  DE commit Stephen Herron was at the Nike Ohio Opening combine

Michigan Friday: France is Now Complete - Back To The Weight Room

The trip to France is now complete and it seemed the Wolverines got plenty of educational value out of the trip.   This bonding and educational trip was funded by Michigan alums Bobby Kotick and Don Graham at a cost estimated to be $800,000.   Bobby funded the Rome trip entirely and split it this year with Don.   Bobby has offered to fund the trip every year that Jimmy wants to do it.

Next year proposed trips could be Greece, Spain, Cuba, and South Africa.  If Jimmy can start winning on the field more often, this trip will become a huge recruiting advantage.

One of the most important hires this off season was S&C coach Ben Herbert from Arkansas.  It seemed that Ben and Jimmy hit it off during the first phone conversation:

"It was as natural and easy a conversation as I've ever had," Herbert said Wednesday. "Philosophically, how he views things, the things he takes pride in, the things he believes in, carry in line with the things that I do.  "The conversation was effortless."

Ben got to work right away contacting players and getting them back in the facility:

What followed was baseline testing, deep-tissue work and a full revamp of Michigan's offseason strength and conditioning program. Rather than narrow down specific objectives, Herbert says he prefers to take a comprehensive approach.

"It comes down to first making sure they understand the importance of fueling their body," Herbert said. "And most don't."

He's hammered home the importance of water and fluid, having frequent meals, pushed zinc in players' diets and stressed working on the lower body during workouts.

"The largest muscles in the body are in the legs," Herbert said. "Those are pulling movements. Their upper back, lower back, really the backside of your body in a lot of cases, are untapped when they come in. Either from high school or other institutions.

"From a development standpoint, we start there."

The other side to all of this is creating a new, inviting environment in the weight room. Players say they can't wait to get in there and made reference this spring to new, unique workouts.
Herbert and his team -- he hired four assistant strength coaches, along with a full-time nutritionist -- have turned it into an environment "you like/love to be in."

As I know you have heard, Ben has been making a real impact on the team since he joined in January.   With his new approach and the new Schembechler weight room, it seems the team is enjoying working out and getting stronger and faster.   One of the things that happened last year, was the dominating defense got a tired in the  4th quarter as the offense was not moving the ball.  Hopefully we will see a huge impact with both units next season.

  •  JT Barrett was signed as a free agent by the New Orleans Saints.  He is not expected to make the team as a QB.   I know JT had a great run in Columbus, but with the new OSU QB's and a new a pro offense focus, there will come a day where we will miss playing JT and his power running game.   I continue to be surprised that Don Brown couldn't stop a QB that didn't want to throw and would run anytime it was less then 3rd and 10 yards.

  • Wichita State sophomore shooting guard Austin Reaves is considering transferring to Michigan.  He would of course have to sit out a transfer year.

Michigan Thursday: Jacks of All Trades - Master of None

Nick Baumgardner is now with the Free Press and wrote an article this week that Brian at Mgoblog wrote a post on it.   The key comment was from Grant Newsome:

The  offensive line? Players talked about how much new position coach Ed Warinner made simplifications this spring, mainly because he had no other choice. Grant Newsome told reporters Tuesday that Warinner stripped down the complex language and overall concept because it was overwhelming.

"He said he was even confused by the amount of terminology and different plays we had in the playbook," Newsome said.

On this blog, we have talked about "too many cooks in the kitchen" and this is a key example.  Jimmy had two offensive line coaches, coaching two different styles of blocking: Zone and Power.   What this did was confuse the offensive lineman and made sure they were not good at any expect of blocking.

This is 100% on Jimmy and he should own it.   He had too many guys making too much money and not focusing on specific areas.   Tim Drevno was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for power, Greg Frey was brought in to coach zone blocking and the TE's, and Pep Hamilton was in charge of the passing game. (Jay of course was the RB coach)  What a mess!

This year is much different:
  • Pep seems to be the unofficial OC
  • Ed Warinner is the only coach coaching the offensive line
  • Sherrone Moore is coaching the Tight End's
  • Jim McEwain is coaching the WR's
  • Jay Harbaugh still has the RB's
I thought there were two embarrassing losses last year where Michigan's lack of blocking was very clear and could not be covered up by the dominating defense: Michigan State and the Outback Bowl.    The entire team looked checked out during the Outback Bowl.

Jimmy had to make changes to try to turn this battleship.   The schedule is brutal next season, thanks to Warde Manuel signing the new ND contract with the first game in South Bend.   Michigan will also have to travel to East Lansing and Columbus.   I love the ND rivalry, but would have preferred to keep the Arkansas and schedule the Fighting Irish where it was a better fit for Michigan then ND.   How Warde looked at the schedule and thought it was ok, is very hard for me to understand.   He has been a good AD so far but that was a "Dave Brandon" type of mistake.
