They're Just Better

Playing a perfect football game is a difficult thing.  It's hard to be perfect in such an aggressive sport.  To beat a better football team you need to play perfect and hope the better team makes a few mistakes.   The game today came down to one little play, that didn't go in Michigan's favor.  After scoring the first TD and then missing the extra point, on OSU's first play from center Dobbins fumbles the ball and it bounces right up to him for a 35 gain,  If that ball bounces sideways like most fumbles, it could have been an entire different story.   It wasn't and the blow out was on because Michigan couldn't even slow the Ohio State offense and made far too many mistakes to even be competitive with the #1 team in the nation.

Michigan got dominated by the OSU offensive line.  I'm surprised OSU attempted a pass becuase they sure didn't need to.   Even when the no name QB came in, Michigan couldn't stop them.   This game isn't on coaching, its just OSU has better players by a landslide.

This isn't going to change folks, OSU is going to continue to recruit 5 star NFL players and Michigan will continue to recruit 3 and 4 stars that have 4.0 grade points.

I'm not going to do cheers and jeers as there was too many jeers to point out.

Michigan did do a good job on Chase Young and the offensive game plan was solid.  Michigan was picking apart the OSU defense before Shea fumbled the snap and the WR's started dropping the ball.  Anyway you want to slice it, Michigan was never going to win a shoot out.

Time to play in a neutral site scrimmage and plan for next year's second place finish to OSU.   The athletic department needs to call the ACC and see if they have an opening.

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it look as they're here to stay
I believe in Yesterday.

As Michigan fans we can relate to that famous Beatles song.  Even this verse hits home, Love was such an easy game to play,  Now I need a place to hide away.  Many of us growing up watched each team go back and forth winning this rivalry game.  Lately, its been painful and one-sided.   Ohio State for example sent back un-wanted tickets to Ann Arbor a couple of weeks ago, as Buckeye fans have their sights on what they consider "bigger things" like the the Big Ten Championship game and playoffs.   The Wolverines again don't have that luxury of playing anymore games after Saturday, outside a meaningless scrimmage of a bowl game.  So this damn rivalry game better be of the most importance to the everyone in Schembechler Hall.

Tale of the Tape:
Total Defense = #1 OSU
Total Offense = #6 OSU
Turnover Margin = #6 OSU
Team Sacks = #2 OSU
Playoff Ranking = #1 OSU
Intangibles = Michigan

I probably could have listed 50 more stats that showed Ohio State is better then Michigan, because they are.  They are undefeated and beat both Wisconsin and Penn State who Michigan lost to, yes both were in Columbus but both were wins.  The only thing you really can say negative about OSU this year, is that they really haven't been tested away from the horseshoe.

Sing, "It's been a long time since I Rock N Rolled" if...………..
  • Shea has a great day
  • Michigan OL can pass protect
  • Don Brown earns his salary
  • More Nico is a line in the game plan
  • Michigan's Defense doesn't give up long QB runs
  • The final score is in the low 20's
Tell yourself in a low internal voice, They really are the better team if.........…
  • Justin Fields is running in Michigan's secondary
  • Greg Mattison has the secret key to Harbaugh's office and steals the game plan
  • Don Brown now has to address Ryan Day as "Daddy"
  • Urban Meyer is let in the building
  • Chase Young earns more Heisman votes
  • Ryan Day is not just a cast off from the Broadway remake of The Munsters Returns
You can point to a ton of reasons why this rivalry has been so one sided:  talent, better coaching, better game plan, injuries, are all valid points.   The one thing that drives me crazy, is the QB runs.   OSU has beaten the Wolverines on QB runs for the better part (not last year - that was on Don Brown) of 10 years.  Michigan gets OSU into a 3rd and 6 and gives up 10 yards because nobody is watching the OSU QB.  Penn State last week got back into the game and lost the game on QB runs.

Michigan can win this game, but they have to play perfect.  They can't get behind early, they can't give up huge plays on defense, and they can't turn the ball over.  Shea and the WR's have to play great and mix just a little running game to keep the Buckeyes honest.   Please double team Chase Young and throw the damn ball to Nico!

I promised you and myself after last years Don Brown debacle I would never pick Michigan again in this game until the streak was broken.  I'm a man of my word.

Michigan Friday: Wow Juwan Howard

Tim Aylen, Battle 4 Atlantis
Michigan blew UNC off the court on Thanksgiving afternoon.  Yes, it only ended up a 9 point game and UNC made a nice run at the end but that really doesn't tell the entire story.  The Wolverines at one point in the second half were up by 24 points and Coach Roy Williams was so mad at his team he wasn't calling a timeout to stop the run.   Yes, the Tar Heels went completely cold and couldn't throw the ball into the ocean from the Atlantis resort beach, but some of that credit goes to Michigan's defense.   It also goes to show you that pretty much everyone is equal in the NCAA right now and anyone can beat anyone.   It's also clear that Michigan opponents don't want to battle Teske in the low post.  His defense is outstanding!

Brooks had another good game as Michigan's top scorer with 24 and DD brought energy and another good scoring performance with 11 off the bench.

Michigan did have some foul trouble with both Simpson and Livers fouling out.   I also could see both teams were getting a bit tired about midway during the second half.  The Wolverines now will play in the Championship game today against another top 10 team in Gonzaga.   I was glad the Zags beat the Ducks because Michigan is already playing Oregon in a couple of weeks at Crisler.

If Michigan can get Franz Wagner comfortable, this could be really a nice team heading into Big Ten play.   Michigan will continue to have some serious tests with today's championship,  2 Big Ten games in December loom, a trip to probably #1 ranked Louisville, and hosting the Oregon Ducks.

Michigan Turkey Day

Happy Thanksgiving to the entire Michigan Fan Base!

Juwan Howard's team passed a test on Wednesday beating Iowa State but will have a real big test today as they face #6 North Carolina.  It was nice to see Franz Wagner back on the court and he hit two 3 pointers and finished with 6 points.  Michigan had balanced scoring with a side of 22 turnovers, which of course is way too much.  DD had another nice scoring game from the bench with 14 and Simpson sniffed a triple double (but had 8 TO's of his own).   Livers was again the top scorer with 17 points and Castleton's 10 points was a bit of a surprise.   Good Luck to Michigan today with NC and with Duke's loss it now looks like they will be playing the #1 ranked Louisville Cardinals next week.

  • It seems Michigan maybe interested in former 2018 5 star WR Justin Shorter who is transferring from Penn State.   He did have a Michigan offer before signing with Penn State.   Justin is no longer on PSU's roster, so expect him to find a new home for next season.   As you may know, Josh Gattis was Justin's recruiter at Penn State.

  • Speaking of Penn State,  James Franklin seems to be on the top of FSU's wish list.   Reports are there is mutual interest.   Franklin could also be a candidate for USC if they make a coaching chance and don't hire Urban.

  • BC's Steve Addazio is interested in the Rutgers job as he is probably on the way out at Boson College.

Michigan Tuesday: The Real Big Ten Championship

Sadly, Michigan Football has never been to Indy to play a Big Ten Championship game and this year won't be an exception.   If you want to enjoy your Thanksgiving meal, don't consider that Minnesota could attend before Michigan does.

With all that said, the real Big Ten Championship will be played on Saturday.   Ohio State has already beat Wisconsin and nobody is losing sleep over playing Minnesota.  Michigan of course lost to Wisconsin and Penn State already.   Both games were on the road and if Michigan doesn't sleep walk to a 21-0 deficit would have won easily in Happy Valley.    Michigan is playing its best football of the year and I believe would be favored now over Wisconsin at a neutral site.   Which means the two best football teams in the Big 10 are playing in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

The Michigan coaches and players are saying all the right things during their Monday press availability, lets see if that translates to the field.

  • Seems Jimmy's brother is putting together another Super Bowl run with a dynamic athlete at QB, a strong defense, and a power running game.  Seems Jimmy did something similar at the 49'ers.

  • 4 star S RJ Moten Michigan commit visited USC last weekend and will be back in Ann Arbor this weekend.  He seems a little shaky in his commitment and this weekend could go a long way on confirming his signature in early December.

  • Willie Taggart never signed his contract at FSU and may not be due is $17M+, which would suck for him.  He actually might need a job on Jimmy's staff.

  • Austin Hatch is now a full time motivational speaker, good for him!

Michigan Monday: The Week

Growing up a Michigan fan there were always two weeks I would look forward to, Notre Dame and Ohio State.  I can't stay that feeling has stayed with me during this week, as OSU has dominated the Wolverines recently.  Hell, they just had a coach retire quit with an undefeated record against our beloved program.   It's a bit of a strange week as well, Thanksgiving throws a huge wrench into the week and getting your mind right about Saturday when your sitting with family and friends around a feast seems like a bit of longshot.

I watched most of the OSU - PSU game and its clear OSU will fall back into Urban mode for big games.   Run the RB, Run the QB, then when you get used to stopping the run, pass to talented WR's.   I hope Don Brown and Josh Gattis has one hell of a game plan on Saturday.   I also hope that plan includes throwing to Nico early and often.   It's also smart not to rush the MLB on 3rd and 8 because Fields is going to try to run for a 1st down.

  • Shea Patterson is back to back winner of Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

  • So I assume the new redshirt rule can't be used retroactively, but Shea only played 3 games as a Freshman at Mississippi.   I know many of you are looking forward to Michigan's other QB's but having another year for Shea in Gattis system could be pretty damn good.

  • Its seems Josh Uche's knee injury is not serious

  • Tim Hardaway went for 31 last night!

  • Greg Schiano will not be the coach at Rutgers again.  I think this man really has some issues with decision making.   He is un-employed at the moment.  Jedd Fisch and Anthony Campanile are reported candidates for the job.

  • Michigan's bowl projections are all over the board.  If MSU beats Maryland they will head to Detroit in the Quick Lane and could play FSU or North Carolina (per ESPN Bowl projections).

  • Coach Howard get his first test on Wednesday against Iowa State in the Bahamas.  Tip is at  noon.

  • Jabrill Peppers has a fracture in his back.

Trap Aware

Mike Mulholland | MLive.com
Michigan players and coaches either realized IU was a trap game or they didn't care.   As the Wolverines cruised to a victory in Bloomington on Saturday evening.  The Michigan offense finally figured out they have an NFL receiver in Nico Collins and throwing him the ball often makes a lot of sense.

Shea who never had a 300 yard passing game as a Wolverine, had his second in a row as he and his teammates used the pass to dismantle it's over matched foe.  It wasn't a perfect game and another reason why we do Cheers and Jeers.

Cheers
  • Shea Patterson was very good again
  • Nico is a first round talent WR
  • More Giles Jackson please
  • Good pass protection by the Oline
  • Defense line played well
  • Strong coaching and adjustments
  • Dax with a pick in his first start
Jeers
  • I thought the CB's played poorly
  • Will Hart had his worst game in memory
  • Slow start on defense and 14 early points for IU
  • Too many penalities
  • End of the first half was confusing
  • Running game didn't get over a 100 yards
Michigan had anything they wanted in the passing game, so why run?  But when they did, they weren't very effective.  HH ran hard and Charbonett broke a nice run but Michigan finished the day with 87 total yards on the ground.   In fact, IU had more rushing yards with 97.

I also don't know what Michigan was doing at the end of the half?  It was like they were trying to run the clock down with out being in field goal range.   They punt the ball with 3 time outs and basically just let IU run the clock out.    With Michigan having basically a buffet of anything they wanted in the IU secondary, I don't know why they weren't more aggressive in scoring at that point in the game with also getting the 2nd half kick.

OSU comes to town next week with only pride and traditional on the line.  They have already qualified for the Big Ten Championship game with their win on Saturday.  In reverse fashion, Penn State actually gave Michigan some tape on how to score on the Buckeyes.  OSU still remains one of the best and most talented teams in the nation and Michigan is playing their best football of the season.   Let's hope its a competitve game and one Michigan has a chance to win.

Indiana Preview

Time: 3:30
Location: Memorial Stadium
Weather:  40 - Heavy Thunderstorms
TV: ESPN
Stream: ESPN+
Line: Michigan -9.5

If you were going to try to define a trap game, this would be the example.  A team that Michigan has struggled against but hasn't lost to in over 30 years in between two rival games.   I had no idea that weather could be an issue as there is between 80%-90% rain between 1:00 - 4:00 with heavy thunderstorms at 4:00.   This sounds like there could be a long delay in this one or they even might push the start of the game if that forecasts is accurate.

Tale of the Tape
Passing Game = Indiana
Passing Defense = Michigan
Running Game = Michigan
Kickers = Indiana
Intangibles = Indiana
Talent = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan

This game is really Don Brown vs. Kalen DeBoer the new OC for Indiana.  Can Don's new zone defense stop IU's passing game?   The Hoosiers really don't run the ball, so Michigan needs to key off the pass but worry about surprise runs.   The Michigan defensive line will need to dominate a less than average offensive line.

Say this doesn't feel like a trap, more like an O Snap! if...…………………...
  • Michigan's defense dominates and keeps IU under 14 points
  • Shea is picking apart the IU defense
  • Michigan RB's have over 200 yards on the ground
  • No turnovers
  • The weather ends up as a positive for Michigan
  • Michigan doesn't have the road sleepy's
Damn these trap games if...………...
  • If IU gives OSU another game plan to beat the Michigan defense
  • If this game becomes a shoot out
  • It's clear Michigan is looking forward to a week from Saturday
  • Michigan's defense is giving up slants and long runs
  • Michigan is turning over the ball and trying to kick field goals
I like Michigan's power run game if this becomes a ND rain game.  IU is going to try to dink and dunk the Michigan defense to move the ball down field.  They will not let their offensive line get beat with long WR routes that take a few seconds to get down field.   It's exactly how MSU tried to play the Wolverines last Saturday.   Michigan's defense will have to play that trap zone a ton.

IU wants a shoot out so expect them to throw the kitchen sink at the Wolverines.   Michigan will have to put some points up to win and lets hope they can execute in the red zone to get TD's.  The weather could be a huge factor in this game.   Hanging on to the ball on both sides could be the difference as IU's defense is much better then it has been in the past.   The seniors will need to shine in this game as they are starting to realize their games at Michigan are running out.   Hudson on defense has a huge game and Shea makes plays on offense.

Michigan 31 IU 20

Michigan Thursday: Is Indiana Better Than Michigan?

Your first reaction might be to laugh at that question.  Historically the divide between these two programs is similar to the Grand Canyon.   Though the Wolverines have been slow starters this season and even slower on the road.   If Michigan doesn't go down 21-0 in the first half at Penn State, they win that game by probably double figures.

Indiana is improved and could be considered a Big Ten program on the rise.  I like to think of them as the Purdue Boilermakers before this season.   Michigan also has played poorly against IU recently.   The Hooisers took Michigan to OT in 2015 and 2017.

Let's take a look at the numbers:

Total Offense
IU #31
Michigan #69

Rushing
Michigan #67
IU #102

Passing
IU #13
Michigan #63

Total Defense
Michigan #5
IU #18

Rushing Defense
Michigan #17
IU #46

Passing Defense
Michigan #4
IU #10

Those numbers are shocking to me as I didn't expect them to be so close on defense.   I would have guessed IU had the #40 total defense and they are 18th.  I did expect IU to have better stats on offense mostly in the passing category.

IU clearly doesn't run that much, which is a bit strange as that is how they have gashed the Wolverines in recent years and even got Greg Fry a job on Michigan's staff.   The two biggest keys for the Wolverines will be stopping the passing game and scoring points in the passing game on offense.  THROW NICO THE BALL!

IU has a shaky offense line and will try to get the ball out of Ramsey's hand as quickly as possible,   so that Paye, Uche, Hutchinson, and Danna don't bury him.   Look for a ton of short passes, like what MSU tried to do most of the game.

Michigan must not sleep walk at any point during this game.  As I have said many times before, this is the definition of a trap game.

  • Duncan Robinson went off last night against the Cavs and Coach B.  He had 7 3's in the first half and finished with 9 and 29 points.

  • Rutgers continues to spin its wheels in the hiring of a new coach.  Now the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault has come out against the possible hiring of Greg Schiano due to his Penn State days.

Wolverine Wednesday: Last Day For The Early Signing Period in Basketball

Rivals Indiana
Michigan has locked up and signed PG Zeb Jackson (photo above) in this early window, he has been committed to Michigan for a long time and signed the first day of the early signing period.

Michigan's next commit, 5 star forward Isaiah Todd will not be signing today and is still committed but will sign in the Spring.   The biggest threat to Michigan is IT heading overseas and cashing a check with a pro team for one year.

Michigan as expected made the final list for a number of 5 stars but finished runner up or worse.  Nimari Burnett was the latest to commit to another program as the talented 5 star guard picked Texas Tech over the Wolverines.   Which means Howard and staff had to shift very quickly and offered the likes of Adam Miller out of Chicago and AAU teammate of Jace Howard.   Josh Christopher is another guard candidate who is expected in town for a visit this weekend.   There is also an outside chance that Adam Miller takes a visit this weekend or could commit today to Illinois.

Michigan continues to look good for 4 star center Hunter Dickinson as a few crystal balls have come in to the good guys.  Hunter's girlfriend who is a freak track athlete signed with Michigan last week, and could be another positive on the Pro - Con's chart to the Wolverines.  Hunter doesn't talk to the media often so many folks are guessing where he stands.   Most insiders believe its a 3 school race with Michigan, FSU, and Notre Dame.   This is a kid with a Duke offer.

If Hunter surprises everyone and signs with Michigan today, Coach Howard would be one happy coach! I'm assuming Jace Howard, Coach's son will also wait until Spring to sign with the Wolverines.  Actually, Jace hasn't committed yet and does have a few other offers.   This seems like a good strategy, which gives coach the flexibility coach needs in the class.  Jace of course could also be a walk-on if need be.

  • Ohio State sent some of thier tickets back to U of M.  I guess some Buckeyes want to save up for the Big Ten Championship game and maybe the CFP.

  • Michigan is now #13 in the CFP rankings.

  • I know Coach B put together this basketball schedule but Michigan doesn't play again until Friday and seems it could of played at least one more tune-up games prior to going to the Bahammas tournament.  At least, this schedule gives Wagner more time to heal without missing more games.

Michigan Tuesday: I Wonder If Mike Hart Was Smiling?

As I was watching Michigan take a knee on Saturday, I wondered if Mike Hart was smiling.  He was actually coaching the RB's as Indiana was taking on Penn State, so I'm guessing he wasn't keeping track of the score.

This week of course he will need to watch tape of his former team and I'm guessing he will enjoy the tape from last weekend.   If you haven't kept up with Mike after leaving Michigan, I thought I would run down his short NFL career and coaching roles:

Fun fact:  Did you know Mike finished 5th in the Heisman voting in 2006?
  • Mike was drafted in the 6th round in 2008 by Indy, #202 pick
  • Between 2008-2010 Mike bounced between the practice squad and being cut
  • On 1/3/2010 Mike scored his first NFL TD against Buffalo
  • That season Mike had 2 carries in the Super Bowl!
  • The next season Mike scored his second TD against the Chiefs
  • His best running day was on MNF against the Texans where he ran for a total of 84 yards
  • Mike was released during the summer of 2011
-Right after being cut in 2011 Mike took a quality control job with Eastern Michigan's program.   That became a RB coach role from 2012 - 2013.
-Then Mike took the same role with WMU from 2014-2015
-Move to RB coach with Syracuse during the 2016 season
-Now the RB coach for IU from 2017-current

So Mike has stayed busy and seems to be enjoying his role on IU's staff.   I know preparing for Michigan's defense is no joke but I hope Mike found a moment to have a little smile this week after Michigan embarrassed little brother.

  • Michigan only has a few targets left for the 2020 class.  2 were on campus for the MSU game.  4 star OT James Pogorelc came away impressed and seems to be down to Michigan, VA, and Stanford.   Next is 4 star and #3 TE from Windsor Theo Johnson was also in attendance.   Many believe Theo is leaning towards Penn State but hopefully Saturday and the closeness to his hometown will help in his recruitment to Ann Arbor.   Jimmy also needs to find a QB late in the cycle.

Michigan Monday: Time to Turn The Page To Indiana

Most Michigan fans are probably still smiling from the game last weekend.  We all wanted a blowout but we have watched too many MSU games to know anything can happen.   Sparty bounced out to a 7-0 lead and I know many of us thought we might have another crazy Saturday.  That didn't happen and Michigan turned Sparty in ground beef and sent them limping back to East Lansing.

As good as it feels to beat an instate rival, Michigan must use the 24 hour rule to celebrate the MSU victory and move on to another team that has given Michigan trouble over the years.   Indiana hasn't beaten the Wolverines but played them into overtime in both 2015 and 2017.   IU runs a wide open offense and finds themselves bowl eligible at 7-3 for the first time in a long time.  IU would love a trademark win and the Wolverines would fit the bill if they are looking forward to the Buckeyes in two weeks.

IU lost a close game at Penn State on Saturday 34-27 where QB Payton Ramsey was 21/31 for 371 yards to 9 receivers, 1 TD and no picks.  He also ran for 31 yards and 2 TD's.   So the kid can play and did this in Happy Valley.    This will be a big test for the Don Brown and his new zone bracket defense we heard about on the broadcast on Saturday.   Michigan does have the #4 defense against the pass and will look to pressure Ramsey and hope he makes a few mistakes.   If your wondering who has the best ranked defense against the pass?  It's Ohio State which of course is one of Indiana's losses.

IU has only been giving up 21 points per game but that came against bad offenses like Northwestern and UConn.   OSU put up 52, Nebraska 31,  Penn State 34 and Sparty 40 so there will be points for the Michigan offense if they continue playing he way they have since the second half at Penn State.

Michigan is -7.5 right now on the betting line.

  • Michigan this past weekend offered two new instate OL Caleb Banks and OL Ru'Quan Buckley.

  • Shea Patterson is co-Offensive Big Ten Players of the week with Jonathan Taylor.

I Hope Sparty Felt Pride

John T. Greilick, Detnews
To quote Mark Dantonio's famous words after he felt disrespected by Mike Hart's "little brother" comment, "the pride comes before the fall".  Well, I hope he felt pride because the Spartan Program has fallen and can't get up.  You can say they have entered the "Life Alert" phase of the Dantonio Era.

Michigan's game on Saturday was a microcosm of the season.  The Wolverines started slow, had sloppy mistakes, got behind, woke up, and dominated the rest of the game.   It's also the reason we do the traditional Sunday Cheers and Jeers.

Cheers
  • Shea Patterson had 300+ yards passing and probably his best game as a Wolverine
  • Have a day Ronnie Bell!
  • Game plan gets an A for Don Brown and Josh Gattis
  • I know he might not show up large on the stat sheet but Mike Danna is really playing well
  • I thought the Oline was excellent in pass protection
  • Hutchinson showed speed and quickness
  • Defense held Sparty to 54 yards on the ground
  • After getting behind the entire team played with energy and purpose
  • More throws to Nico please
  • Nordin made field goals!
  • DPJ flew into the endzone
  • Blocked punt was huge!

Jeers
  • Dropped passes early on
  • Slow start getting behind by 7
  • Too many penalities
  • State's TD drive was basically on the back of Michigan penalities
  • DPJ's return was great, fumble not so much
  • Black's flex should have been saved for the sideline
  • Didn't love the decision to go for it on 4th down early, punt and make Sparty go 80+ yards.  Michigan was losing the field position battle in the 1st quarter.

Great rivalry win and its so much fun to win these games when we dislike the MSU coach.   Sparty gets a chance to get back to winning next week against Rutgers.

Michigan on the other hand, has a difficult task of playing IU when they are playing some of their best football of the year.  The Hoosiers gave Penn State everything they could handle in Happy Valley yesterday and will be looking to upset the Wolverines next weekend in the definition of a trap game.

The Michigan coaches will have to do some of their best coaching during the week to keep the team focused, as playing IU's offense will be a great test on what they will see from Ohio State in 2 weeks.

This is the type of game that I love to hate.  MSU is imploding and Michigan has played its best football lately.   It seems the story of this game has already been written, think again because this is the Spartans Super Bowl and Michigan is proven to be "sleepy" coming off a bye week.

Tale of the Tape

Health = Michigan
Defense = Push
Offense = Michigan
Intangibles = Push
Doing anything to win = MSU
Coaching = Michigan

Michigan is better than State at pretty much every position, the issue is that MSU doesn't have anything to lose and will do anything to win.  Expect them to go for it on 4th down, fake punts, and play past the whistle.   Dantonio knows the only way to salvage this season is to win this game.   It's going to be cold and a very hard hitting game.

Michigan should be prepared for this game as they had 2 weeks to get ready.  I just wonder how they are going to react coming off a bye week.  The last bye week they played awful at Wisconsin.

Wish Mark good luck at his new job as MSU AD if...………..
  • Michigan isn't bye week sleepy
  • The offense dominates and scores TD's
  • No Turnovers
  • Michigan can run the ball against MSU's Dline
  • The defense dominates MSU offense
  • The WR's have a highlight reel worth of catches and TD's
Wonder out loud what the hell Mark tells his team this week if...……….
  • Michigan keeps Sparty in the game via turnovers
  • Michigan can't solve Sparty's defense
  • Short fields give Sparty enough points to win
  • Non-concussed Brian Lewerke plays like Drew Brees
  • Michigan gets fooled on a trick play
It's strange that this game could be a 50-7 outcome or a 21-20 game.  Vegas isn't sure either as they list Michigan almost a 2 TD favorite.  MSU's program is coming off some devastating loses with their best LB on suspension and a huge Illinois comeback win.   They are also injured everywhere and will be playing guys with little to no experience.  They could come into the Big House and just lay down and take their beating.   I don't believe that for a minute, MSU has had a couple bad teams over the years and Michigan hasn't blown them out.

The keys are Michigan's running game and if Don Brown's unit can dominate MSU's downtrodden offense.  The team that has the most rushing yards usually wins this game.  Shea must play smart and be a game manger by hitting the WR's on slants and let HH and Charbonnet win the game on the ground.  A good stat line would be 250 passing and 200 on the ground.   Michigan will need to hit them early and often and stay focused.

Michigan Thursday: Convenient and Expected

I really don't believe in coincidences, there are too many smart people in the world to believe a lot of things in life just happened because things happen.  When people have the power to predict an outcome in their favor, they will put processes in place to complete that goal.  We got a couple of examples of that this week.

First, the NFL giving Colin Kaepernick a 3:00 Saturday workout for all the teams.   My guess is there is something in the settlement that made this possible and seeing the quality of NFL QB's playing in the league, Kap not being a roster was going to trigger bad things for the NFL in the settlement.  I also believe that other teams might want to look at Kap but didn't want to bring him in for a tryout Also why Saturday?  Are they busy on Sunday?  Setting up a workout when no decision makers are available is like a salesperson selling IT storage to the manager of the cafeteria.

Next is the Chase Young situation.   Chase asks a family friend (who may or may not be an NFL agent) a loan so his girlfriend can go to the Rose Bowl nearly a year ago.  Chase a full time student and Buckeye football player somehow re-pays the loan back and than this transaction leaks to the NCAA the week of the Maryland game.   The NCAA gives Chase a two game penalty against the likes of Maryland and Rutgers but back for Penn State and Michigan.   Herbie tweeted out that Chase's honesty was the reason the NCAA dropped the suspension from 4 to 2 games.  To quote Billy Joel, "Honesty, Is such a lonely word, Everyone is so untrue, Honesty, Is hardly ever heard"

We could peel this back, but it doesn't matter as we all knew the best college football player this year would be back for the Michigan game.  The next thing I'm waiting to hear is that the Bosa Brothers and Michael Thomas will also be playing.   OSU played the NCAA and won.  It seems schools like Arizona (FBI wire taps), Memphis (playing an ineligible player) and Kansas (FBI wire taps) are not respecting the NCAA's authority.  Why shouldn't Ohio State play with them a little bit as well.

  • Michigan Basketball News - Michigan has gone 1-3 on the 5 star recruiting trail for 2020.  We are now in the early signing period and Zeb Jackson has signed, Isaiah Todd hasn't  He may not sign until the next signing period, which doesn't seem like great news (I think the biggest threat is playing pro ball somewhere).  It also seems that Hunter Dickinson's girlfriend has signed a track scholarship with Michigan.  Hunter is a 4 star center that Michigan is after.  Ziyah Holman (Hunter's girlfriend) is quite the athlete herself and a two time Gatorade Player of the Year.

  • Michigan suits up against Elon on Friday at 7:00.

  • Speaking of signings, Gage Garcia has signed his NLI for Wrestling.  He will walk-on and play football as well.  If he gets on the field, I believe that scholarship flips to football.

  • Former Michigan Basketball signee Jalen Wilson has broken his ankle for Kansas and may miss the rest of the season.

Wolverine Wednesday: That's Better

When you only have 5 players on the floor, one elite player can win games around 4 good other players.   We have seen Melo and KD take their teams on a national championship ride as they were clearly the best players in the NCAA Tournament.  You could even use Glen Rice as a Michigan example of that same theory.

As of today, Michigan doesn't have an elite player on the floor.  Some have said, that could be Wagner when healthy, but that reveal is delayed until he heals.   Michigan this season will have to win like they did last night, play great defense, hit 3's, find Big Sleep down low, and play with energy at all times.   That last point about energy might be the most important.

Last night, Zavier found his assist and dribble drive games and finished with 17 points, Teske closed the game with 10 straight and finished with 17, and Livers was hitting 3's and even added some mid-range game and led the team with 22.   If those 3 play like that, Michigan will be competitive in most games.   Creighton and Michigan seem to have similar talent and Michigan ran away at the end for a 10 point win.

  • Could be a strange basketball season as #1 UK went down to Evansville last night.

  • Coach Dantonio seems to be in a strange place as MSU's head coach.  He told the media that his QB Brian Lewerke didn't go into the concision protocol and MSU later had to say he was checked for a concussion.   I'm still concerned this an inquired wild animal that is playing dead and about to get up and fight.

Michigan Tuesday: Everyone Loves Chris

Jimmy during his Monday press conference gave us some information on suspended RB Chris Evans.  Chris met with U of M officials and will re-enroll for winter term and re-join the team at that time.  Hat tip to Chris for taking care of his business, taking his punishment, and doing the things he needed to do to be reinstated.  Michigan now has one hell of a backfield next season with Evans who will probably will play RB/Slot WR, HH, and Charbonnet.   We all thought that Chris would be a perfect fit for Speed in Space, now we will get a chance to see it.

Another player Jimmy spoke about was injured LB Josh Ross.  Josh is healthy and Michigan will play him in one more game to save his redshirt for this season, which will leave him with 2 more seasons.  NCAA does some dumb sh*t, but this is a good new rule.   Michigan's LB core should be pretty good next season as well.

  • Michigan Basketball should hear about 2 recruits very soon.  Nimari Burnett a 5 star guard will make his announcement this afternoon.  Michigan has recruited him hard but the insiders believe he will pick Texas Tech over Michigan.  4 star 7 footer Hunter Dickinson seems to be down to Duke, FSU, and Michigan.  It seems Michigan has a good chance to land the talented center.   Hunter is expected to announce his decision in the next couple weeks.

  • Michigan Basketball plays their second game of the season tonight as they take on a tough Creighton team.  The Wolverines have a tough schedule that includes the Bahamas tournament and trip to #5 Louisville.  Michigan is -4.5

High-tech simulator brings ports from around the globe to Maryland

In addition to the usual amenities—high-speed internet, spacious guest and meeting rooms, an auditorium, a pool and fitness center—the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Heights has something other conference centers don’t: an immersive, virtual-reality simulator that allows mariners to practice piloting vessels through ultra-realistic recreations of ports from all over the world.

Michigan Monday: Deep Thoughts

Yes, this is rivalry week and Michigan is coming off a bye week and MSU took a bad loses to Lovie Smith and Brandon Peters on Saturday.   Still I have some deep thoughts...…..

  • First off, rivalry pushed aside the loss of Cassius Winston's brother and now the news is breaking that former WR for MSU and the Detroit Lions George Rodgers has passed away at 38 goes behind sports and my heart goes out to both families.

  • LSU QB and former Buckeye Joe Burrow is having the season I had hoped for Shea Patterson.  That was a heck of a win by the Tigers on Saturday.

  • Is Michigan going to go all season without playing at 3:30?

  • I wonder which Bowl Michigan is going to play Florida in?  Please no

  • OSU has played an un-believable easy schedule, they have Rutgers this weekend.  Their hardest road game all year, has been what at Nebraska or Indiana?

  • Does Michigan have a Hyberbaric Chamber and is Franz Wagner hand in it for 20 hours a day?

  • I still don't know if Minnesota is good or that Big Ten teams just can't play on the road.   It looked like James Franklin made some coaching mistakes in that game.  Minnesota goes to Iowa this weekend and will host Wisconsin.  It will be interesting to see if Golden Gophers can get through those 2 games.   So the odds are that the Golden Gophers will make the Big Ten Championship game before Michigan.  Come on, man.

  • The Chase Young situation is starting to look like a setup with the NCAA.  Funny how something that happened almost a year ago is now an issue.  There are reports now he might only miss 2 games (not against PSU and U of M) but Maryland and Rutgers.  This reminds me of the time Auburn suspended Cam Newton for just a Tuesday for possibly taking a couple hundred grand from a booster.

  • App. State beat South Carolina this week (who beat Georgia).  I just don't understand why AD's not follow my rules, #2 is never schedule App. State.

  • Arkansas fired their head coach on Sunday after losing to Western Kentucky and being 2-8 this season.  Remember when our AD paid Arkansas millions of dollars to cancel the home and home series? Solid investment there Warde.

  • MAC Action on Tuesday has been moved up a couple hours due to a possible winter storm.

  • I don't know what happened on Saturday will motivate Sparty or crush them.  I think either is possible.  No matter what, MSU is dangerous as hell for the Wolverines on Saturday.

Michigan Friday: Chase Young and Rumors on Evans

Best get to the breaking news first this morning.  OSU DE Chase Young maybe the best player in College Football has been suspended for the Maryland game for a potential NCAA violation.   Rumor mill is saying he took money from an agent or booster back in 2018.  If that did happen, he could be sitting the rest of the year and OSU's last 8 games could be in question.  On the other hand, don't be surprised if Chase is only suspended for the Maryland game where OSU is a 40 point favorite and back for PSU and Michigan games.

There was some twitter activity last night about Chris Evans and potentially coming back to Michigan.  Chris is currently not enrolled but might have the possibility of re-enrolling and joining the team in January.   Michigan has not given any official word on this and should only be considered a rumor at this point.

  • Josh Uche, Josh Metellus, and Ben Bredeson all have accepted invites to the Senior Bowl.

  • Reports are that Deion is a candidate for FSU head coach.  Love Deion but this will not end well if it happens.

  • 2020 Basketball recruiting 5 star guard Josh Christopher will officially visit A2 on 11/22.

Enjoy the bye weekend!

Michigan Thursday: News and Notes

  • It seems Greg Schiano wants more at Rutgers than just his old job back.  He wants Rutgers bankrupt athletic department (who has already borrowed money against future Big Ten earnings) to build a football training and practice facility like other Big Ten teams.   Seems Rutgers is running out of choices, as just this morning Butch Jones has withdrawn his name from interest for the Rutgers job.   Quick memo to Greg, beggars can't be choosers, are you forgetting what happened when Tennessee tried to hire you?

  • The tug of war between Cincinnati's AD and USC continue over Urban Meyer.  It seems Mike Bohn has decided to take the job and will be named USC AD this afternoon.   It has been reported that USC's President doesn't want Urban Meyer but that stance might have been a deal breaker for Mike Bohn and other AD candidates.  The rumor is Mike is planning on offering Urban $9M per year. If you didn't know Urban is a UC graduate but he and Mike Bohn are not reported to really know each other.  Insiders believe that if Mike is taking the job that an offer to Urban is coming.

  • Former Harbaugh staffer at Michigan, Ron Price as been put on leave at Howard University due to allocations he has been threatening, intimidating and verbally abusing players.

  • Harbaugh is expected to watch new 2020 QB offer CJ Stroud play a game this weekend.  Michigan just offered and is considered a long shot to land CJ over his current offers like Ohio State and Oregon.  It will be key to try to get CJ on campus for an official visit.  Other options include FSU commit Jeff Simms and WSU commit Jayden de Laura who is the teammate of Michigan WR commit Roman Wilson in Hawaii.

  • Amara Darboh has been released by Tampa Bay, he may need to consider the XFL or CFL to re-boot his football career.

What to watch this weekend:
Noon: Penn State @ Minnesota on ABC
3:30: LSU @ Alabama on CBS

Keep an eye on:
3:30 Illinois @ MSU on FS1
4:00 Iowa @ Wisconsin on Fox

Maryland helps veterans start new businesses, learn new skills

Did you know it's National Veterans Small Business Week? With Veterans Day quickly approaching, here are some ways that the state of Maryland supports veterans seeking new career skills or starting new businesses.

Army veteran provides entrepreneurial training for Maryland business owners

After retiring in 2014, Major Emmett Roberts began networking throughout the U.S. to gain insight into federal contracting and help develop his business. But he quickly noticed one key similarity in most of his discussions—the lack of resources available for veteran-owned businesses.

With this realization, Roberts decided to sacrifice the success of his business to support a larger group of veterans and launch the Maryland Veterans Chamber of Commerce (MDVCC) in May 2018.

Wolverine Wednesday: Not Great

The Juwan Howard era started off with a bang and then ended up with a whimper last night.   Michigan used a balanced offense and good defense to jump out to a 30 point lead in the first half.  Then the wheels feel off and the Wolverines had to hang on as the offense dried up to beat App. State, who clearly has some type of magic in Ann Arbor.

Michigan clearly missed 60% of their offense (that left for the NBA) from last year and struggled to shoot or score the basketball in the second half.  Zavier Simpson had one of the worst games I have ever seen him play and Livers is still only a spot up shooter, the rest of his game has flaws.
DD looks like he is playing a pick-up game out there and Johns struggled in limited minutes.  Its also clear this team hasn't fixed their free throw issues.  The positives were Teske dominated in the first half and Brooks got hot for a few minutes in the second half.   This team is lacking a superstar right now that can get them points when Michigan goes into a scoring funk.   Currently, this is not a NCAA tournament team and one that will struggle unless Franz is that superstar and gets healthy quickly.

  • Reports are Cincinnati AD who has verbally accepted the USC role is re-considering because he has learned he will not be able to hire Urban Meyer.  Other reports are that other AD candidates turned down the job for the same reason.  The USC President doesn't want Meyer due to his controversial nature.

  • 2020 #3 TE in the country just outside of Detroit in Windsor, Theo Johnson will announce his decision on the 18th.  Theo is expected in town for the MSU game but PSU is his CB leader.

  • Michigan #14 in the playoff rankings, OSU #1

  • IU has lost their talented QB Michael Penix Jr. to shoulder surgery for the rest of the year. Michigan travels to IU in a few weeks.

Michigan Tuesday: The Juwan Howard Era Begins Tonight

The first night hopefully of something special for years to come.  This Michigan team isn't great, the expectation is they will compete in every game but this isn't a championship team with a pretty loaded Big Ten with the likes of #1 MSU, #7 Maryland, and #18 OSU.   Looking forward to the season!

  • Jourdan Lewis joined, Peppers, Winovich, and Bush with an NFL defensive TD this season.

  • Rumors mill is already saying that Big Game Bob Stoops could go to Florida State.

  • Giles Jackson was the co-Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week

  • Jordan Glasgow is a semi-finalist for the Butkus Award

  • Josh Metellus is the Reese's Senior Bowl Defensive Player of the Week

  • Michigan - MSU game will kick at noon on Fox a week from Saturday

Michigan Monday: Coaching News

The Harbaugh coaching tree got pruned yesterday as Florida State decided to move on from Willie Taggart after less than two seasons.   FSU raised $20 Million from donors to pay off his $17M buy out, what a great use of money to pay a coach to not coach at your University.  I wonder if 2019 Michigan recruit and 4 star LB Kalen DeLoach who signed with FSU is having second thoughts?  Kalen's top two schools where Michigan and FSU before deciding on the Seminoles.

Don't be surprised if Willie ends up on Jimmy's staff or as a coach (if he loses one) next season. There is a lot of respect between the two coaches and Willie is known as a great recruiter.   He also would be a cheap hire with FSU sending monthly checks.

I'm a little surprised this hasn't happened earlier but it seems Rutgers is now moving forward to hire former coach Greg Schiano, who some suspect has been in the works for nearly a year.   Rutgers did interview former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones on Friday.  Not sure what Rutgers is waiting for as Greg isn't working and Rutgers could use some news in this dreadful season.   I assume they want to give Greg a clean slate starting next season, though the first signing day is roughly a month away.  Rutgers has the 90th ranked class with 10 verbal's in the 2020 class (24/7).

  • Michigan is ranked #14 in the AP, which will become irreverent on Tuesday when the first playoff rankings come out.

  • Duncan Robinson dropped 23 last night for the Heat.  I have to say, he is the most surprising former Michigan basketball player to make it in the NBA.  I'm very happy for him and hope he continues his great shooting!

  • Last night was not all bad for the Harbaugh's as John beat Captain America in Baltimore.  I sort of expected to see Jimmy on the sideline since this is a bye week and he was in the area rolling Maryland on Saturday.

  • Juwan's team had an impressive performance in a scrimmage against D2 Saginaw Valley State on Friday.  Tomorrow it starts for real against App. State.  (Never schedule App. State! :-))

On a side note, I can't remember so many teams taking byes during the first two weekends of November.   I guess this is a symptom of the season going longer and conference championship games.   All top 3 teams were off last week and there are really only a couple good games this weekend, including Bama - LSU and Minnesota - PSU.   It will be interesting to see if PJ Fleck actually has a team or not.

Boring Is Good

Julio Cortez, AP
Michigan started the game with a 100 yard kickoff return TD by Giles Jackson and really never looked back to an easy 38-7 win.   With that said, there is a reason we do Cheers and Jeers after games because the score really didn't tell the entire story.   The Wolverines lacked energy on both sides of the ball and didn't dominate in areas they probably should have.   The offense was a bit concerning with only 155 yards on the ground and 176 in the air.   The defense gave up a total of 233 yards but zero points.

Cheers:
  • Business trip and deal closed
  • No turnovers!!
  • Uche with 2 sacks
  • Metellus with 2 TFL's and a pick!
  • Mr. Jackson if your nasty with a KO TD
  • Will Hart averaged 50 on two punts
  • Tru Wilson had a nice 39 yard run

Jeers:
  • Against one of the worst secondary's in college football Shea was 13/22 for 151
  • No RB had more then 60 yards total
  • Turner ran the ball twice for -6 yards
  • No WR had more than 65 yards which was Nico with a 51 yard catch
  • Field goal kicking is a mess right now
  • McCaffrey looked shaky in relief of Patterson
  • Michigan Special Teams gave up a KO TD
I don't particular like bye weeks, I like to look forward to a Michigan Football game on Saturday.  I understand why the program needs them, I just prefer to watch the Maize and Blue every week.  There is plenty for this team to work on in practicce for the next two weeks before a rival comes to town and difficult trip to IU.

The one thing I know for certain and wish Michigan didn't have 3 difficult games left, is Dylan McCaffrey needs more time under center.   We have to start thinking about next season and this season if Shea gets hurt running the ball.  Dylan had some decent time to play on Saturday and went 3/7 for 25 yards and 4 yards rushing.    Do I need to mention again that Maryland is ranked #116 in passing defense?

A win is a win and it says something that Michigan was a bit sleepy but still beat Maryland by 31.   Funny what happens when you don't turn the ball over.

Maryland Preview

NBC Wash DC
Time: Noon
Location: Maryland Stadium
Weather: Sunny 50 No Rain
TV: ABC
Stream: ESPN App
Line: Mich -21

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley and Michigan's OC Josh Gattis both shared the same role at Alabama last year.   There was even a report that Josh was going to be Mike's OC at Maryland before Jimmy called.

Both got into a war of words before the season started on who did what at Bama last year.
Doesn't matter now because both have new big time roles and new offenses.  Maryland's offense was great early and bad lately.  Michigan has been the opposite, bad early and hopefully they found their stride against ND.

Tale of the Tape
Healthy Local QB = Michigan
Secondary = Michigan
Defense = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Intangibles = Maryland

I didn't do a, is Michigan better than Maryland? post this week, because we already know the answer.  Here are a few stats to see the differences:

Passing D:
Michigan #6
Maryland #116

Rushing D:
Michigan #20
Maryland #56

Total O:
Michigan #78
Maryland #73

The offenses are close and the defenses are not.  Maryland's secondary is clearly struggling.

Say to yourself, its always good to have a win before a bye week if...……….
  • Shea passes for 300 yards for the first time as a Wolverine
  • Nico, DPJ, and Tarik each has a TD
  • Ronnie Bell has over 100 yards receiving
  • HH goes for 100
  • Michigan doesn't turn the ball over
  • Defense shuts down Maryland's offense
Yell, I hate trap games if ………………………..
  • Maryland's offense finds something that works against DB's defense
  • Michigan is road sleep walking
  • Michigan is turning the ball over
  • Maryland is about to make an Illinois turn around
  • Maryland's defensive line is pressuring Shea

Maryland has athletes and recruiting better, they will be better in a few years.   I hope this game isn't the Maryland - OSU game from a year ago.  Maryland found a hole in the OSU defense and continued to pound it, OSU was playing catch-up all day and won in OT.   Mike Locksley probably hasn't slept all week finding a way to exploit the Michigan D as he knows his defense won't be able to slow Michigan.

Michigan won by running the ball for 300 yards last weekend, this week they need to win by passing the ball.  Yes, Michigan won't forget about the run but the Wolverines talented WR's should be running open all day and Shea needs to find them quickly and accurately.  Don't let Maryland hang around and if you get up by 28, keep running the offense.   Also don't let Josh Jackson get the last laugh, as his father says: Josh can read a defense like Brady, run like Vick, and throw like Mahomes.  Josh has a high ankle injury and only played 3 snaps against Minnesota last week.

Michigan 48 Maryland 13
