Maryland cybersecurity companies, is RSA 2018 on your radar?

Maryland Commerce is headed to San Francisco for the 2018 RSA Conference in San Francisco, April 16-20, and we hope you’ll be part of the Maryland delegation. For the first time, Commerce Secretary Mike Gill will lead the delegation and he’s looking forward to experiencing the conference firsthand. To join the delegation, contact Mark Miraglia.

Here’s an overview of what we have planned:

Commerce Breakfast
On Tuesday, April 17, Commerce will host Maryland: Where Cyber Works, a breakfast event showcasing Maryland’s strengths in the cyber sector, including venture capital opportunities. The event, which features Bob Ackerman and Dave DeWalt of AllegisCyber, is designed to encourage out-of-state and international companies to consider a Maryland location.

We’ve reserved a few spots for Maryland companies. If you’d like to attend, email Maureen Kilcullen. Space is limited – we’ll do our best to accommodate all requests. Invitations will go out in mid-March, and admission is by invitation only.

Business Meetings
Commerce will hold meetings with companies that may be interested in or are actively considering a Maryland location. If you’d like to participate in meetings – or if you’d like Secretary Gill and other Commerce staff to participate in business meetings you’re hosting during RSA – contact Mark Miraglia.

Maryland Booth

Wolverine Wednesday: Mid-Week Bullet Points

• The McCaffrey's Boys saved a fallen hiker's life by calling 911 and getting immediate medical help.   Well done boys!

• Michigan has offered a not rated Ohio CB Nyles Beverly yesterday for the 2019 class.

• Old friend and current FSU offensive line coach Greg Frey has offered Michigan commit 2019 four-star OL Trente Jones.

• I found this interesting:   Payton Manning has sold his 31 Papa Johns franchises in Denver.   A couple interesting points,  Papa Johns is no longer the pizza of the NFL and it's CEO resigned after complaining the NFL Flag controversy was affecting business.   Payton purchased those franchises right before the marijuana laws in Colorado went into effect.  Payton will stay on as a Papa John spokesman.

Michigan Tuesday: Rest vs. Rust

In the NBA playoffs, teams try to get through the first couple rounds as fast as possible so they can have extra rest before the next series begins.   Michigan just won 4 games in 4 days and will have either  9 or 10 days off until the NCAA Tournament starts.  


With the compressed Big Ten schedule this year and the early Big Ten Tournament to play at MSG, the Wolverines get maybe too long of a break.   I know some coaches even thought about scheduling a non-conference game this weekend, but I think you run up against a rule that only allows so many regular season games for most programs.   The Nebraska and Penn State's of the world who are probably on the outside looking in for the NCAA tournament would have loved one more win to help their resume.   Michigan needs a game just to stay sharp. 


There is nothing that will make a hot team cold then a long layoff between games.   So Coach B has his hands full to keep this team playing at a championship level the next week in half. 

• Michigan is now a top 10 team and ranked #7 by the AP.

• I feel terrible for Mo Hurst who had to go home from the NFL Combine this weekend as a heart condition was found during his NFL physical.   Word is that Michigan was also aware of the condition and cleared Big Mo to play.   Since Michigan has one of the best Cardiology Departments in the US, lets hope the NFL clears him as well and that this isn't serious or life threating.

• The Jordan Brand will release 2 Michigan shoes on Friday.  The first is the Michigan 32 which we showed you last week.   The second shoe is the Jordan Why Not?, which is Russell Westbrook's new Signature Jordan shoe line.  I believe some of the Wolverines were wearing these during the Big Ten Tournament.  Price is $125

• Coach Drevno ended up at USC as RB Coach and Passing Game Coordinator.   Good Luck to him.

• Former Michigan kicker Ryan Tice will play at Tennessee next year.

• 4 star 2019 DT Mazi Smith really connected with the new Michigan S&C staff on his recent visit to A2.

Bank of America Continues Expansion in Baltimore County

Bank of America, one of the world’s leading financial institutions and the largest bank in the Baltimore region, is planning to add about 600 new jobs at its Hunt Valley complex by 2020, significantly expanding its Baltimore County operations.

The anticipated increase follows the addition of nearly 300 jobs in 2017, which would raise total employment at the location to about 1,500 by the end of the decade. The new jobs primarily will comprise call center and staff support positions. Individuals interested in applying for an open role may visit http://careers.bankofamerica.com/.

“We are pleased to expand our base of operations in Baltimore County and the great state of Maryland, and we are appreciative of our public servants who work tirelessly on behalf of the community we are proud to serve,” said Bank of America Greater Maryland Market President Sabina Kelly.

Hunt Valley is one of Baltimore County’s most vibrant employment centers, with McCormick’s new global headquarters opening next door, convenient light rail, and the amenities of Hunt Valley Towne Centre across the street from the two-building Bank of America complex, which includes a Merrill Lynch office.

Bank of America has added space, upgraded interiors, and increased parking at the site. The Maryland Department of Commerce worked closely with other state agencies, including the Maryland Transit Administration and Baltimore County, on permitting and stormwater management issues.

“It is tremendous to have a financial leader like Bank of America grow its operations and add hundreds of new jobs to our state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Maryland offers an extremely competitive and attractive location for global companies, and this expansion is further proof that Maryland is Open for Business.”

Michigan Monday: Celebrates Back 2 Back Big Ten Championships!

When we would say, "Michigan is now a basketball school", we all smiled and thought maybe someday.  Well folks, we might be there.   Coach B and the Michigan Basketball Team did the impossible again, winning 4 games in 4 days and winning the Big Ten Championship.


This was a classic team effort, with everyone contributing..  Jon Teske might have been the MVP of the game as he came in and was able to slow down Purdue's Andre the Giant/Isaac Haas, while adding 14 points and 12 in the first half.   Haas is one of the largest most athletic big men I have ever seen, since maybe Shaq.   Even with Andre the Giant's domination, Michigan continued to run its offense, as they were taking him outside and opening driving lanes for Simpson and MAAR.




Michigan took a close game in the first half and blew the doors off the Boilermakers for most of the second.   Only some shaky free throw shooting down the stretch kept the game close as the largest lead was 18 points. 
You have to just love this "lunch pail" type of team and Michigan couldn't be hotter right now.  The issue is, with the moved up Big Ten Tournament, Michigan will have nearly two weeks off without a competitive game before the NCAA starts.   Which will give us plenty of time to discuss the rest vs. rust debate.  (It would be great if Michigan was able to bring in another team that isn't in a tournament next week to play a scrimmage at Crisler.  I don't even know if that is allowed but it would be great to keep the team sharp.)  Now it will be left up to the NCAA committee on where they put Michigan and which seed.  Wolverine fans are hoping for Detroit and a #3 seed. 


Congratulations to the Wolverines for another tournament title! Go Blue!

Michigan Friday: That Was A Close One

Michigan needed OT to beat Iowa "who was playing with house money" on Thursday afternoon.   The Wolverines went dead cold from the 3 point line and needed some strong defense and Duncan Robinson to pull out this win.   It was also nice to see Charles "In Charge" Matthews as the leading scorer again with 16 points. 


The Wolverines have a difficult match-up today against Nebraska who is the #4 seed but also playing for their NCAA Tournament lives.   They need a Q1 win and that could come today against Coach B's squad.   Michigan traveled to Nebraska a few weeks ago and left with a 20 point loss.   Michigan will have to hit some 3's and stay out of foul trouble to win this game and move on at MSG.

• Don Brown has offered NC 3 star 2019 CB Jalen Frazier.

• How can Ed Warinner make a good first impression?  Land Rice transfer Calvin Anderson.  Calvin has a good relationship with Tim Drevno and recruiting director Matt Dudek.  We know Drevno is gone and Warinner is taking his place.  Ed will need sell Calvin on his past successes and getting guys to the league.   Calvin is also interested in working against Gary in practice everyday, which of course will make him even better.

Michigan Thursday: Michigan Basketball Plays This Afternoon

Michigan will play Iowa this afternoon at 2:30 at MSG in NYC.  Iowa will be playing less then 24 hours after beating Illinois last night.  Michigan is 2-0 against Iowa this year and has scored 75 and 74 points against them. 


Coach B has the team playing well again late in the season and looking to make another run in the Big Ten Tournament.   Michigan usually plays well in NYC, so lets hope they continue the streak today and through the weekend.  Game is on BTN if you can catch it.  

• Insider Sam Webb pens a article that makes Shea Patterson immediate eligibility a strong possibility.  Ole Miss must respond to Michigan's request and decide to support or not support Shea's immediate eligibility.   After that is completed it goes to the NCAA for a final decision.

 

• Michigan Basketball commits David DeJulius and Brandon Johns both made the final 5 for the Michigan Mr. Basketball Award.
