Pirate ships set sail in Baltimore

This month we celebrated Baltimore City’s newest adventure, complete with pirate swords, bagpipes, and a blast from the USS Constellation’s cannon.

Twelve solar powered pirate ships are officially open for business at the Inner Harbor. The fleet, owned and managed by the Living Classrooms Foundation, will employ and inspire 50 young people with job training and hands-on education. Baltimore’s own Premier Rides helped design the ships, which can hold up to six pirates at one time.

Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill was on deck with Historic Ships in Baltimore Captain Chris Rowsom, Living Classrooms President James Bond, and Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh to set sail the Inner Harbor’s first new tourist attraction in five years.

Michigan Thursday Part 2: A Good Day For The Basketball Program

3 pieces of good news got me to take a few minutes to write about the positive vibes around the football and basketball program.

Lets start with B-Ball:

Charles Matthews is heading back to Michigan and will not enter the NBA Draft this year.   After not being invited to the NBA Combine, this was really the only decision.   Yes, he could of stayed in the draft and been a late second round or even a free agent but that would of been a couple of years of development in the G-League at best.   Now he gets to lead Michigan, which suddenly looks like a pretty decent squad next year.   Welcome Back Charles!

So are you ready to feel old?  Jalen Wilson committed to Michigan Basketball last night as he was named after Jalen Rose.   Next thing your going to tell me is that Juan Howard is the Pistons  head coach! :-) (hopefully!)

Jalen is 6'7 and 200 pound small forward.  He is a high 4 star and ranked in the top 40 to both Rivals and 24/7.  Jalen picked Michigan over his finalists of Baylor, Kansas, Marquette, Oklahoma State, and UCLA.  But if you think about it, he was always destined to wear the Maize and Blue after being named after the host of Get Up on ESPN.  It seems the Wolverines always had Mom's support! 

Jalen is an athletic forward that shoots the ball well and plays defensive.  He will fit well into Coach B's offensive as Coach will work on his shooting touch from 3 point range.   This is blue chip recruit and not under the radar as guys are starting to notice the success Coach B has had at Michigan and the number of guys he is putting in the NBA.

Now the surprise of the day:

Michigan Football got a surprise commit from Cincinnati (OH) Moeller 2019 offensive lineman Zach Carpenter.  Zach had visited Ann Arbor last month and was offered on the visit.   Zach knew Coach Warriner from Minnesota and was quickly added to Michigan's board.  Zach had a bunch of crystal balls to Clemson and none of the services were predicting him to Michigan.  

Zach is 310 pounds and 6'5 and projected to be a guard in college.  He is ranked as a high 3 star with offers from the likes of Clemson, Arkansas, UK, MSU, Louisville, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, and more.  

Zach joins Karsen Barnhart Trente Jones, Jack Stewart and Nolan Rumler on the offensive line in the 2019 class, which mean the coaches now can be very picky about adding another player to this group.

West Coast have been using cable

Hi,

Many racers out here on the West Coast have been using cable steering “forever”, but I had to be contrarian and use rack-n-pinions and tillers. Until… the Beach Party Buggy arrived. This vehicle was built with fabulous craftsmanship by professional fabricators, but they were not vehicle dynamics engineers. I converted the Buggy from four wheels with no suspension to three wheels (which needs no suspension). Once the front fork was mounted, it was obvious that this was the perfect opportunity to try steering by steel cables. I installed a pulley on top of the front fork, and a hand crank between the front seats. Such an arrangement needs a lot of “gearing”, so the pulley up front is something like 9 inches in diameter, and there is no pulley at all on the hand crank – just the ¾ inch shaft itself. And it still could use more reduction. Many racers use a bicycle rim for the pulley. 
Installing this, the cable needed to be wrapped many times around the shaft, and I tried to wrap it in a tight orderly spiral. But this cable was too stiff, and I wound up happy that the cable stayed on the shaft at all while I tightened the turnbuckle. I left it on the loose side, because the cable would obviously be “tripping over itself” when I turned the handle. 
Guess what…? It worked great, right off the bat! The cable is slowly being chewed apart where it goes thru the hole in the shaft, but this can be easily monitored and the cable replaced as needed. The slack I allow in the cable so it can wrap over itself on the shaft without over-tightening causes no trouble at our low speeds.

Michigan Memorial Day Monday: New 2018 PWO Offensive Lineman?

Side Note:  I will be taking some time off this week, so you will be treated to some of Michigan's 2017 season game highlights each day this week.  I will pick only the wins, because nobody wants to revisit the loses again. 


Since today is Memorial Day, I thought it would be fitting to start with Air Force.


Before we do that there is a unique situation about a potential new PWO for the 2018 class, offensive guard recruit Griffin Korican.  Griffen was a 2 star prospect and has signed to be a PWO at Oregon State but has been in discussion with Coach Warinner.   Griffin is from Seattle and is 6'5 and 295 pounds.  Per Land of 10:


“I signed a preferred walk-on with Oregon State and during my spring break [in April], I visited Michigan and talked with Coach [Ed] Warinner and he told me I could do a PWO [preferred walk-on] if they could get me into the school,” Korican said. “Long story short, they got me into Michigan and now I’m making a decision on where to go.”


The 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman said he is “pretty much” committed to Michigan, but is taking a visit on June 2 to solidify his feelings for himself and his family.


“It’s more for my parents, honestly,” Korican said. “They want to meet and talk with the coaches and I want to meet with some of the players and talk with the coaches again to make sure I’m making the right choice.”


As a 2-star prospect, Korican had offers from San Diego and the Colorado School of Mines before taking the walk-on offer from Oregon State. However, he thinks Michigan gives him a better chance to be successful.


“I feel like Michigan is the only opportunity I have earned where I will compete against the best every day, which will make me into the best player I can become,” he said. “I also really like Coach Warinner because of his old-school mentality and toughness he instills in his players.
