Nearly 2,000 jobs expected through More Jobs for Marylanders

In just over one year since the launch of the More Jobs for Marylanders program, 124 companies have indicated that they plan to either locate in Maryland or expand within the state to benefit from the program.

Of those companies, which include firms both from Maryland and other states, 49 have filed official enrollment applications, and are projecting to create nearly 2,000 jobs in total. Also, the program has been expanded to include five additional counties where manufacturers creating new jobs will receive the highest benefits.

More Jobs for Marylanders incentivizes manufacturers to create new jobs in the state. New manufacturers that locate in targeted jurisdictions and create at least five new jobs may qualify for income tax credits based on the number of jobs created, a state property tax credit, sales and use tax refund for specific purchases, and State Department of Assessment and Taxation fee waiver. Existing manufacturers that meet job creation criteria throughout the state may also qualify for the income tax credit.

Legislation adopted in the 2018 session of the Maryland General Assembly altered the qualification criteria and expanded the roster of targeted jurisdictions, known as “Tier 1 counties.” That list now includes Baltimore City and Allegany, Caroline, Dorchester, Garrett, Kent, Somerset, Wicomico, Washington, and Worcester counties. Three additional jurisdictions—Baltimore County, Prince George’s County and, as of this month, Cecil County—have also been designated as “Tier 1 counties” at the discretion of the Secretary of Commerce.

Companies applying to the program range from manufacturers of metal, food, adhesives, wood, and other products, and represent the potential for hundreds of new jobs, particularly in areas of the state where unemployment is high. Recent More Jobs for Marylanders applicants include Tennessee-based Ring Container Technologies, a manufacturer of plastic containers than plans to create 19 jobs at a new manufacturing and warehousing facility, and California-based Fabricated Extrusion Company, which plans to create 50 jobs at a new headquarters and manufacturing facility over the next four years. Both companies are establishing their new facilities in the Hagerstown area.

Michigan Monday: Wolverines Get an Instate DL Recruit

Michigan got somewhat of a surprise recruit on Sunday night.   Tyrece Woods a 6'2, 255 pound three star DE from Belleville committed to the Wolverines for the 2019 class.  As Tiger Woods was climbing up the leaderboard at the PGA on Sunday, Tyrece Woods was planning on committing to the Wolverines.


What's interesting is that Tyrece was a camp offer.  Meaning, prior to his Michigan offer he wasn't considered a blue chip recruit.  His offer list included the likes of Air Force, Fresno State, MAC Schools, Cincinnati, and a couple of Ivy Leagues schools.  


Why are camp offers so important?  It's because the coaches are able to coach the kids and see their talent first hand vs. watching an internet highlight tape.   Steve Wiltfong reports that Tyrece ran a 4.65 in the 40, a 4.22 shuttle, benched 225 26 times, and squatted 500 lbs.   So yes, he might be undersized right now for the DL and is under recruited, but the kid is an athlete and the Michigan coaches loved what they saw in him.  


As we know, Belleville is loaded this year and also has two highly rated guys heading to MSU.   Tyrece as been at Detroit King but transferred to Belleville this summer. 

• An update to the Jordan Sneaker-gate investigation:  Michigan labels each athlete's shoes with their name and number making re-sell much harder.   They also have to sign a document, saying they are aware if they sell their gear, they could lose their scholarship.   Insiders believe that the Michigan shoes that are available for resell today came from former players or staff members.   Which is good news and shouldn't effect the status of any current player.

• Former Michigan DC DJ Durkin has been put on administrative leave after ESPN reported of a toxic environment in his Maryland program, after the death of his former player Jordan McNair.   That now makes two Big Ten East coaches on administrative leave with 3 weeks left before the season starts.

• The Big Ten Network, will do their regular Ann Arbor camp visit today.  So keep an eye on twitter for updates.

Breaking News: Michigan Looking Into Players Selling Team Issued Jordans

As I mentioned here on Tuesday, the sneaker re-sale market is a big business and for Michigan to have avoided the pitfalls of a player re-selling his Jordan's has been a minor miracle.   That quickly changed today as news broke that Michigan is investigating the below report from ESPN.


It seems the shop that bought the North Carolina Players shoes, also has some Michigan shoes in stock.  Like I mentioned on Tuesday, Stadium Goods has a pair of Michigan Jordan's for sale for $6500.


A source told ESPN that the retailer told UNC it had bought shoes from other schools, including Michigan, Marquette and California. Officials from all three schools acknowledged, through athletic department spokesmen, that they were contacted by North Carolina and are in the process of investigating the claims.


This could be something or nothing.  Jordan provides "friends and families" shoes to many athletes and celebrities, so it doesn't mean that a player sold their pair.   Also a former player could have sold his shoes. 


Let's hope this is nothing and the current Wolverines did the right thing.

Michigan Friday: Colin Castleton Has a Broken Hand

"Colin, unfortunately, broke his hand earlier this summer but he didn't have to have surgery," Washington said. "The thing that sucks for him is that he won't be able to participate when we go over to Spain. We expect him to get back to full basketball activities when he gets back." per Interim head coach Saddi Washington.   The true freshman center will miss the experience of playing during the Spain trip but should be ready to go when the season starts.

Since we are 22 days prior to football, which also happens to be Karan Higdon's number.  I thought I would do a quick prediction on who the #3 running back will be this season.


Michigan right now is blessed with some un-believable depth at the RB position.  They have co-starters in Karan Higdon and Chris Evans who will split a majority of the carries this season.   With the loss of Kareem Walker to transfer, the question now remains who will be the 3rd RB in the rotation?  


On a side note, this has nothing to do with the FB position which will be a battle between Ben Mason and Jarred Wrangler to see who can create the most holes in the defense. 


Here are the candidates for the #3 spot:


Walk-on Tru Wilson:  We know Tru has been mentioned by Jimmy has a strong RB in Spring practice, but that is about the extent of our knowledge on him.  He has been mostly a scout team/special teams player for his first two years in the program.


O'Maury Samuels:  Had 3 carries for 7 yards last year against Rutgers and Minnesota.  He is 5'10 and 205 pounds and is considered a freak "fast" athlete.


Berkley Edwards:  He has played for Minnesota, CMU, and now Michigan.  We know who his brother is and is expected to contribute as a returner.   He has a bunch of experience running the football in the Big Ten and my expectation is, if he is healthy will get a number of carries this season.


Kurt Taylor: red shirt freshman


Hassan Haskins: true freshman


Christian Turner: true freshman


With the loss of Kareem the two true freshman are headed for a redshirt year with the depth above them.   I expect Berkley to be the #3 RB coming out of camp but with O'Maury being close and getting some carries for experience.  If the game is out of reach and Michigan just needs a RB to run out the clock, I think it will be Tru Wilson. 


What we know for sure this is the last year for Karan and Berkley and if Chris has a good year, might elect to head to the NFL.  If that happens then Michigan will need to develop a starter for the 2019 season.

Brilliant bakers get ready for Wicomico County Fair competition

For more than 80 years, the Wicomico County Fair has been a staple in the Salisbury community. This year’s event is right around the corner and contestants are preparing for one local favorite pastime—the baking competition.

When Alan Gravenor started baking as a young 4-H member, he didn’t know he’d one day sell a cake he baked for $330. But that’s exactly what happened at least year’s event. The proceeds from Gravenor’s angel food cake went straight back into the county fair.

Each year, bakers enter their homemade goods into various competitions with specific categories. There are multiple categories within the sections of solid or loaf cakes, layer cakes and miscellaneous cakes. There are different cupcake, pie and brownie divisions. And when it comes to cookies, there are 20 different categories, not including the ones for miscellaneous and best collection.

Gravenor, who is past president of the Wicomico County Fair and a member of the Board of Directors, does food preservation – canning and pickling – in addition to baking. He enters about 100 items at each of five fairs per year, one of which is the Wicomico County Fair. Gravenor even earned Best in Show in 2017 for his cloverleaf yeast rolls.

What’s his advice for aspiring bakers? “Plan ahead and be organized,” he said.

He said he’ll have his ingredients and pans ready to go before he starts baking, and sometimes he puts more than one item in the oven at the same time if they need to bake at the same temperature.

Another Wicomico County Fair competitor, Katharine B. Allen, is also a former 4-H member who has been baking since she was young.

“I used to love to help my mother and my grandmother bake,” said Allen, who turned 81 in March.
Among the items she enjoys making are cookies and whoopee pies, she said. She’s also made plenty of coconut cakes.

In addition to baking, she also does canning and competes in flower categories. She said she likes horticulture – single blooms or three of the same type of flower – along with silk flower arranging.

Michigan Thursday: 2016 Skill Positions McGone

Here is the list of wide receivers, TE's, and RB's in the 2016 recruiting class:

That list is shocking to me.  As I'm sure you heard yesterday that Eddie McDoom has decided to transfer.  He was basically just the jet sweep guy last year.  Michigan tried to make him a WR and it just never worked last season.   Since we assume he is buried on the depth chart under Grant Perry and Oliver Martin.  Quick side note on Martin, the roster has him listed as #2 which is the same number of expected starter Shea Patterson.  Which means Oliver probably needs another number if he is ever going to be on the field with the first team offense.

Eddie also struggled to catch the ball on offense and had a very high profile drop in the Michigan State game.  He was a fan favorite though, as every time he touched the ball in the Big House, the crowd would yell: McDooooom!

When reviewing the above transfer list the only guy that would have impacted this years offense is  Devin Asiasi, who many of us expected to be a star.   The ironic thing is that Wilton Speight might still be throwing him balls this season at UCLA.

• There was a few leaks in the sub last night.  Nothing shocking:  coaches are impressed with Shea Patterson and Michael Barrett is practicing at Viper right now.

Wolverine Wednesday: Get Well Coach B

Michigan Basketball head coach John Beilein had double bypass surgery yesterday.  The official procedure, was a "two-vessel coronary bypass graft surgery," is designed to "improve blood flow to the heart by taking a healthy artery or vein from another part of the body and grafting it to the obstructed coronary artery," according to Coach B's U of M doctors.  The procedure was successful and coach is expected back for the regular season.   Though he will miss the team trip to Spain that the program is preparing for right now. 


There is no off season for big time coaches, but it seems this procedure was scheduled at a time where it wouldn't be impactful for games or recruiting.   Saddi Washington will run the squad in practice and during the trip to Spain.

• Speaking of BBall, true freshman Colin Castleton arrived in Ann Arbor 6 weeks ago at 212 pounds.  He is now a bagel short of 227 pounds.   Jon Sanderson is a wizard and we are lucky to have him running the S&C program for Coach B.

• 2019 LB commit, Charles Thomas has decided to transfer high schools away from IMG.
