Instacart’s meal-planning partnership moves into Baltimore

The on-demand grocery service uses PlateJoy to help shoppers figure out what's for dinner. See it as a bid to keep up with the Blue Aprons of the world.

Instacart’s recent expansion into Baltimore is also bringing a new meal-planning service with it.

The app-based grocery delivery service’s partnership with Silicon Valley-based PlateJoy is officially launching in Baltimore and D.C. this week.

Cybersecurity startup Bricata gets Howard County loan ahead of hiring frenzy

The Columbia-based company is looking to hire 30 next year.

Bricata is on the move again, but this time the company isn’t planning to switch states.

The cybersecurity startup grew from seven to 23 employees since moving to Maryland from Northern Virginia last year. The company has further plans to hire up to 30 new employees in 2017, according to Chief Operating OfficerRandy Stephens.

This week, the Howard County Economic Development Authority said it was awarding Bricata a $250,000 loan. The money comes from the state’s Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) funds, which are generated by 1.5 percent revenue collected from the state’s casinos. HCEDA is set to dole out $3 million in VLT loans over the next two years.

Howard County businesses use Pokémon Go to find future employees

Three weeks ago, gaming app Pokémon Go invaded smartphone screens nationwide, bringing Nintendo's classic '90s creatures to life through augmented reality. While fans continue devoting their days to "catch 'em all," Howard County businesses are utilizing the game as a recruiting tool for prospective employment.

Recognizing the craze throughout their communities, Columbia-based IntelliGenesis and Laurel's Jailbreak Brewery joined forces July 27 by declaring a Pokémon Go Battle Royale inside the brewery's taproom, allowing players to compete with others and converse with IntelliGenesis recruiters.

Michigan Friday: A Sneak Peak At The Jumpman Jerseys?

This was tweeted out this morning and could be an inside look at the new jerseys.  These jerseys don't include the number on the sleeve or shoulders which they call TV numbers.   We will see how close these are to reality next week.

  • Practice/Fall Camp starts August 8th and expect more 4 hour practices and probably the return of the submarine.

  • With a us less then two weeks before camp opens, we have a bunch of articles on the internet asking the following:  What is the biggest question mark going into Fall Camp?  I believe there is only one major decision left, who is going to play QB?   We know this is Jimmy's field of expertise and he will make it as competitive as possible.  Most expect O'Korn or Speight,  I wouldn't be surprised if the light when on for Morris as some point during camp as well.  Some have speculated that Brandon Peter has a shot, I don't believe that to be accurate, he seems like he is a few years away from starting.   If Ways and Chesson are still banged up on offense, look for a few guys from the defensive backfield to play a little WR.    Peppers of course and probably Lewis.

  • As you already know, Jimmy threw out the first pitch at the Cubs - White Sox game this week.   What a Rock Star!

  • A lot of Wood is going to be at the Nike release party.  Both LaMar and Charles are expected to attend.

  • Dhani Jones is going to be an NBC reporter at the Olympics.

  • 2017 Alabama OL Toryque Bateman plans to be at the BBQ

Secretary Gill: Baltimore succeeds in tech talent report

Commercial real estate giant CBRE recently reaffirmed something that those of us in the business community already know to be true – Baltimore has a ton of tech talent and we are continuing to attract more and more tech savvy professionals.

CBRE’s annual Scoring Tech Talent report analyzes U.S. and Canadian markets on their ability to attract and cultivate tech talent. Baltimore rounds out the top 10 – an impressive ranking that shows we are headed in the right direction.

Baltimore also ranked #4 for top momentum markets, a list that details the highest tech talent growth rates between 2010 and 2015. Baltimore saw a 61.4 percent tech talent increase during the five-year span. Large influxes of college-educated workers are flocking to cities where the cost of living is low and tech jobs are abundant.

The ranking is really not surprising considering we have a critical mass of cybersecurity and information technology companies in our backyard. With nearly 140,000 industry workers across the state, our tech community is a force to be reckoned with. We rank #1 in academic research and development intensity and #1 in STEM job concentration.

While still a relatively small part of the economy, employers have added more than 1 million tech jobs over the past five years, fueling economic activity in cities like Baltimore. That’s why Commerce loves hearing from local businesses on what makes them successful.

Whether it’s our stellar workforce, prime location, or our unmatched quality of life, join us on social media with the hashtag #SuccessInMaryland and tell us your success story. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing Baltimore and Maryland continue to climb the charts!

-Mike

Seeking wider digital audience, Verizon buys Yahoo for $4.8B

Seeking a wider digital audience, Verizon is buying Yahoo for $4.83 billion in a deal that marks the end of an era for a company that defined much of the early internet but struggled to stay relevant in an online world dominated by Google and Facebook.

It's the second time in as many years that Verizon has snapped up the remnants of a fallen internet star. The nation's largest wireless carrier paid $4.4 billion for AOL last year. The two brands will be rolled into the same operation.

"We have enormous respect for what Yahoo has accomplished: This transaction is about unleashing Yahoo's full potential," AOL CEO Tim Armstrong said in a statement.

At a glance: Marissa Mayer's time as Yahoo CEO

Despite Yahoo's travails, its operations are a prize for Verizon, which wants to capitalize on the growing number of people living their digital lives on smartphones. The company already profits from the data plans that connect more than 100 million people and their devices to the internet. Now it's making plans to control more of the advertising on those devices.

Wolverine Wednesday: A New Partner and Some Former Wolverines Get New Jobs

Many Michigan fans are excited about the Nike launch next week and The Big House Blog has a new Michigan apparel partner in Fanatics.  They will have all the new Michigan Nike apparel on August 1st.   If you love your Wolverines and this blog, please check out the site and purchase your new Nike gear through the banner ad on the left or this link!   (The banner will be updated with Nike gear starting next week!)  Go Blue!

  • I haven't had a Big Will Campbell update in some time, but he just signed a contract with the Titans.  Campbell, who is 6-foot-4 and 311 pounds, has alternated between the offensive line and defensive line during his previous NFL stops with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. He has never played in an NFL regular-season game.   I still haven't let it go, that RR wasted his redshirt year on the field goal team.

  • Speaking of former large Wolverines, this guy went a little higher in the draft then Big Will did.  Jake Long is going to play for a Harbaugh in Baltimore.  He signed a one year deal.

  • This writer believes Michigan and Jimmy are leaving the Illini in the dust.

  • He is not a former Michigan WR but a former 49'er, Anquan Boldin signs with the Lions.   I wonder if he has a good relationship with Jimmy?  Having one of the toughest WR's in NFL history around the Michigan WR group would have to be a positive experience.

Michigan Tuesday: Jimmy Speaks at Media Day

Well, he didn't really say much.  He did say he expects Chesson to be ready when camp opens and that Darboh is the #1 WR now.   The important take away is, we are getting close to football again!

ESPN thought he stole the show on Day 1:  In short, Harbaugh was the same guy who dominated offseason headlines with his quirkiness. Yet something was also different about him.  At this same event last year, Harbaugh was evasive and even difficult at times during his interview sessions. He refused to give many specific answers to the media horde looking to lap up the story of his return to college football. On Monday, though, he was playful and animated, willing to talk at length about his team and other issues.
  • Jourdan Lewis on possibly being named a captain: "it would mean everything to me."

  • The Florida QB that Michigan faced in the Citrus Bowl, Treon Harris has decided to transfer from the Gators.  Treon is the 7th QB to transfer from UF in 3 years.

  • IA WR Oliver Martin who went from basically obscurity to a 4 star WR on 24/7 after his Nike Opening performance, will be at the BBQ at the Big House.

  • 3 Star OH SDE James Hudson is planning to announce soon, there have been mixed reports if Michigan is still interested or not.   Right now MSU seems to be the leader in the clubhouse.  Sam Webb says that Michigan is trying to get him to the BBQ.

  • Former UCLA commit CA DE Hunter Echols plans to take an official visit to Ann Arbor this fall.

Who’s Better At Phishing Twitter, Me Or Artificial Intelligence?

Anyone expecting artificial intelligence to bring about a Skynet-esque doom will have to wait a while. There is, though, a more immediate threat posed by AI. It has the power to do criminal tasks more efficiently than any human can manage.

This was proven to me this month in the form of a challenge: could I trick more Twitter users into clicking on potentially-evil links than some AI-powered bots? In early July, I spoke with two data scientists from security company ZeroFOX, John Seymour and Philip Tully, who told me they were creating AI that learnt from the social network how best to convince people to hit links. Online crooks lure people into clicking on links – known commonly as phishing – to lead them to another page where either malware will be thrust at their PC, or they’ll be asked to enter more personal data, such as passwords or banking information.

Ocean City resort thrives with summer tourism traffic

Francis Scott Key Family ResortFrancis Scott Key Family Resort is a sprawling family-friendly resort with 232 rooms, a mini-golf course, water park, diner and other exciting attractions. Family-owned and operated, the resort is currently run by Jim and Annemarie Dickerson—Annemarie’s father originally purchased the property in 1972. Back then, the expansive resort had only 60 rooms and was surrounded by corn fields in the underdeveloped part of West Ocean City, but there was great potential for growth and success.

The beauty of the resort is in the small details, like an old concrete stamp in the fireplace that details the original year of construction, and animal-shaped towels that are carefully constructed for younger guests to ensure a joyful end to the day. The amazing staff at the resort makes this sort of magic happen behind the scenes. Their dedication is what keeps the facility running so seamlessly, with many of them logging decades of employment with the resort.

“We couldn’t accomplish anything without them,” said owner Annemarie in regards to her exceptional team. The commitment and attentiveness of the staff drives the development of the resort.

Mario Armstrong, award-winning talk show host, convinced the family to change the name to Francis Scott Key Family Resort because it offered so much more than the average hotel experience. While FSK continues to expand with eight new vacation homes set to open next summer, the focus remains on preserving tradition and providing high-quality amenities.

Francis Scott Key Family ResortOcean City is the epitome of convenience for vacation goers, with 25% of the nation’s population within a seven hour drive. The city has numerous attractions, great shopping, delicious dining options, and hotels popping up each year to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Ocean City was always a popular vacation destination, but the growth of businesses in the city has boosted traffic over the bridge into West Ocean City, which previously was more disconnected from the main part of town. The booming business development in the area drives visitors to all ends of OC and hotels like Francis Scott Key Resort offer an accessibility to the beach and boardwalk that cannot be beat.

Ocean City is a driving force in Maryland’s tourism industry, providing attractions for all types of visitors with free events – like fireworks or movies – on the beach. “The town does a great job at keeping vacationing affordable,” said Annemarie. While Ocean City has its obstacles as a seasonal tourist destination, Maryland has provided resources to assist business owners’ success.

“Governor Hogan understands the importance of tourism in Maryland, as it is one of the state’s strongest industries,” said Annemarie.

The resort was recently named one of the top family resorts in the nation by Trip Advisor, a testament to the thriving success of both the hotel and Ocean City as a whole. The FSK team creates a one-of-a-kind experience which will keep visitors flocking to the beach destination for years to come.

Michigan Monday: Has Dytarious Johnson News

Michigan Blog Touch The Banner has confirmed with Alabama LB Dytarious Johnson that he has cleared up all his academic hurdles and will enroll in January.

If you remember, Dytarious Johnson is a 3 star LB from Prattville, Alabama who committed to the Wolverines in the 2016 class but didn't sign an LOI.   He has enrolled in prep school and will join the Wolverines in January as a early enrollee for the 2017 class.   I will add his name to the 2017 class list.

Glad to see it worked out for the young man and a hat tip to Jimmy for sticking with him.

  • Speaking of Jimmy, he played in the American Century Championship this weekend.  It's a celebrity golf tournament for charity and he tied for 62nd.   Which means he spends more time on football then golf, which is a good thing!

  • In terribly sad news,  Mike Sadler and Sam Foltz have died in the same car accident.  Mike was the former punter at MSU and Sam was punter for Nebraska.  If my memory is correct, I believe Mike committed to Michigan as a walk-on, then MSU quickly followed with a full ride scholarship.   Please send your thoughts and prayers today to both families.

Three MD Companies Receive NIST Innovation Grants

Three Maryland companies are among a select group of small businesses that will receive nearly $3.3 million in grants from the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The grants aim to foster innovation and competitiveness in small businesses through federal research funds.

The funding comes from NIST’s Small Business Innovation Research Program, which supports advanced research in the fields of science and engineering. The program bridges the gap between research ideas and physical prototype for smaller companies without the extensive capital to do so on their own. SBIR boasts great success over the years, with participants making influential developments in technology.

The competitive selection process required awardees to submit proposals on products that solved technology challenges, specifically in the fields of manufacturing, cybersecurity and technology. Recipient’s proposals pushed the technology envelope by offering innovative solutions to challenges in various industries.

Maryland companies represent three of the 19 recipients for these competitive grants.

Weinberg Medical Physics LLC in Bethesda will receive $298,706 in Phase 2 funding, after receiving Phase 1 funding last year. They are creating an automated manufacturing process that would cut costs of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while also increasing accuracy and reducing patient side effects.

Z-senz LLC is a tech company based in Gaithersburg that is also a repeat recipient—the company received $100,000 in Phase 1 funding last year. They were awarded $300,000 in Phase 2 funding for the development of a high performance scanning lens with uses in microscopy, endoscopy, ophthalmology, scanning displays and laser machining.

Based in Rockville, Automated Precision Inc. is a first-time recipient with a $98,750 grant in Phase 1 funding. The company’s research focuses on a noncontact measuring technique for use in the defense, energy, aerospace and automobile industries. The technique measures high speed 3-D scanning during surface inspections, which cuts manufacturing costs and can reduce waste.

Baltimore County Ranked 6th in Nation for Technology Use

From Baltimore County Government:

Towson, MD – For the fifth year in a row, Baltimore County is ranked among the top ten counties in the nation according to the Center for Digital Government’s 14th annual 2016 Digital Counties Survey in conjunction with the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Among the counties that participated, Baltimore County earned the 6th place ranking in the category for counties with populations of 500,000 or more. The award recognizes counties considered to be “digital leaders” in terms of aligning technology initiatives with strategic priorities to provide significant cost savings and administrative efficiencies.

Michigan Friday: Recruiting News and Notes

  • Penn State is tired of negative recruiting due to the Jerry Sandusky case.   If your Penn State or Baylor right now, I think you have a huge hole to dig out of on the recruiting trail.

  • After getting offered by Alabama earlier in the week, Jaylen Kelly-Powell added an Auburn offer this week as well.   Maybe those teams should do a satellite camp in Michigan next summer. :-)

  • We know that Michigan would still have to recruit Aubrey Solomon very hard after his surprise commitment last month.  Aubrey will take all 5 official visits and Michigan in one of them.   The others are Oregon, Florida, Clemson and USC.   I can't blame a kid getting to see the US in 5 free trips.

  • Four-star VA S Jonathan Sunderland is making his announcement this weekend and has Michigan in top 4.   Insiders are not expecting him to end up in Ann Arbor and probably heading to Penn State.   Michigan as you know have quite of few DB's high on their board.

  • CB Benjamin St-Juste goes from pretty much un-known recruit to a top 100 guy on 24/7.  He jumped up to the #92nd  player in the nation on 24/7 after his Nike Opening performance.

  • A very quiet recruitment is 5 star TX LB Baron Browning.  He has visited A2 and his brother played for Jimmy at Stanford.   Many recruiting services believed Michigan isn't a serious contender in his recruitment.   Some new information suggests Michigan is in his top group and does have a chance to play for the Maize and Blue.   The recruits that don't talk much to the services, really could surprise everyone with their choice.

With Michigan Fall Camp around the corner and high school practices starting.   I expect we won't see a lot of new commits for awhile.   Recruits now will look to take official visits before making a decision and that can start as early as 9/3.   Michigan has 18 commits and probably 24 spots.   I believe the staff wants to keep the final 6 or 7 spots open for some the big time players still left on the board.

Year Up gives Baltimore youths a different path to jobs

Ja'Meia Jackson thought she'd never get a good job.

After graduating from high school in 2009, she drifted from one low-paying job to the next, working a cash register at a Macy's, leading football fans to their seats at FedEx Field, collecting tickets at Six Flags America.

She took classes at Prince George's Community College but struggled with assignments while working long hours, and dropped out.

"I felt like I wasn't going to go anywhere," said Jackson, 26, who lives with her parents in Lanham. "Like I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life."

She doesn't feel that way anymore. Now she earns $20 an hour fielding customer service calls full time at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Columbia.

Jackson credits her turnaround to Year Up Baltimore, the local branch of a national workforce development program that prepares disadvantaged urban youths and young adults for the middle-skill, entry-level jobs that employers say are increasingly difficult to fill.

Rise in Shadow IT Linked to More Cyberattacks in Germany than in the UK, According to New Research from Tenable Network Security

Engineering, R&D and finance are top three departments responsible for introducing shadow IT into the workplace

Newly released survey data from Tenable Network Security, Inc., a global leader transforming security technology for the business needs of tomorrow, revealed that most German and UK organizations acknowledge shadow IT as a major security concern, but Germany reports more cyberattacks through shadow assets.

We stopped by Gamescape 2016 last weekend to talk to indie game devs and find out what’s coming next:

Michigan Thursday: Nike is Coming - Nike is Coming!

Some of the gear that will be available on August 1st is starting to leak.

Here are a few of my favorites:

One of the things to notice is the new Maize color.  Nike calls it Amarillo or if you are on the technical side it's PMS 7406.   It's common knowledge that Jimmy prefers a deeper Maize then the highlighter yellow that Adidas was going with.   Amarillo will be a special Nike color only for use by Michigan.

MDen will be open at Midnight on 8/1 for the launch.  It will be a big party staring late on July 31st on State Street as the Michigan Band will be playing, etc.

On August 2nd, Nike will have an invitation only Forged For Greatness: The Victors Dress Code Event in Detroit.  During this event the football jerseys and a new Michigan-themed AJ Trainer 1 shoe will also be introduced.   If your a Michigan fan and Sneakerhead, I suggest you pick up a pair of the AJ Trainers 1 quickly as they will sell out on August 2nd very quickly.

On August 6th the football jerseys will be available for sale.  The basketball jerseys will be reviled closer to the season.

Nike Golf will also be making a higher end line of Michigan gear that will be available at M Den's Victors Collection.

Wolverine Wednesday: Has Basketball News

collegespun

Coach B received a verbal commitment for the 2017 class last night from PG Eli Brooks.  Eli has been a prospect that has been getting a lot of attention in recruiting circles in last few weeks.   In the last two weeks he received offers from Villanova and Ohio State.

Eli is not ranked and plays for a unranked AAU team called the Jersey Shore Warriors.   He is 6'1 and 170 pounds and averaged 25 points per game for his high school team Spring Grove.   He also knocked down 79 three point shots.

Eli seems like a perfect Coach B recruit, talented but under the radar.  Michigan still has two open spots for the 2017 class and will be looking for a couple talented forwards.

  • Reports are that Michigan Basketball has signed a home and home contract with Texas.  Sounds like UT will be a Crisler next year.

  • DB Jaylen Kelly-Powell got offered by Alabama yesterday.

Phalanx Secure Trident CMP named in 10 Coolest Network Security Products Of 2016

Phalanx Secure SOlutions is prould to announce that our Trident CMP monitoring platform has been named one of the 10 Coolest Network Security Products of 2016. CRN Magazine a resource dedicated to the education and enhancement of the IT reseller community has named the Trident CMP as a great new resource for the small to medium business community.

The market for network security continues to rise alongside the security market overall, but it is also starting to evolve with a host of new solutions to help companies take their security efforts to the next level. In 2016 so far, we have seen both legacy and startup security vendors launching new solutions around advanced persistent threats, threat isolation, software-defined security and the cloud. Companies also launched new systems to take enterprise-grade network security capabilities downstream to SMB customers. While the year isn't over yet, here's our roundup of coolest, and more importantly channel friendly, network security products in the year so far.

Phalanx Secure Solutions, a Baltimore, Md.-based security solution provider, is aiming to tackle the growing threats facing the SMB markets with the launch of the Trident CMP Cybersecurity Monitoring Platform in June. Available through reseller partners starting July 1, Trident CMP is a low-cost hardware system based on a Raspberry Pi that plugs into a company's router, and is combined with a subscription service that offers network traffic monitoring in Phalanx's Security Operations Center. The system automatically alerts the SMB customer if there is a security issue that needs remediation. Prices start as low as $149 per month.

Michigan Tuesday: Talks Dunn

Last week, I did a post on Derrick Green who was the #1 RB and a 5 star recruit who never seemed to find his footing in Ann Arbor.   A similar story is Bri'onte Dunn at Ohio State.

Let me take you back to the 2012 recruiting class.   Michigan already had a commitment from 5 Star DB Dymonte Thomas from Ohio and had their sights on OH 4 star RB Bri'onte Dunn.   Dymonte and Bri'onte are cousins and had talked about playing together at the next level.    Bri'onte was really torn between playing with his cousin at Michigan or going to his dream school Ohio State.   In November 2011, Urban Meyer considered himself healed and took the Ohio State job.  He quickly convinced Bri'onte to come to C-Bus.

Dymonte's and Bri'onte's career in college seemed to be on a similar path as both had struggled to see the field.   Dymonte only had 3 starts before his junior year but started to find his role in the Michigan backfield in 2015 and will play a major role this season.   Bri'onte in his entire OSU career had run for a total of 291 yards and 3 touchdowns.   Mostly seeing time at the end of blow out games.

This season was setting up to a big one for Dunn who was competing for the starting RB role with Detroit native Mike Weber, who was also tied in a recruiting battle between the two rivals.   Mike is coming off a torn meniscus last season.  Last night, Urban Meyer threw Dunn off the team for breaking team rules.   He is a senior and has a couple of weeks to find another team.  He did graduate from OSU in May and can play right away if he finds another school.

This is another case of what might have been.   Michigan has had a hard time finding a full time running back before DeVeon Smith grabbed it last year.   Could have Bri'onte had different result in Ann Arbor? We will never know.   It will now be interesting to see what happens with Mike Weber who picked Columbus over Ann Arbor on signing day when Michigan signed Florida RB Karan Higdon.  If you remember, the OSU RB coach that convinced him to come to C-Bus took an NFL job the next day.

  • Have you given any thought on how good Michigan's DL could be this year?   It was pretty good last year and the Florida offensive line compared it to Alabama's after the Citrus Bowl.   Now let's add the following:  starter from last season Ryan Glasgow who was a clear difference maker before getting injured, Taco who showed to be quick off the edge to the QB in a limited role last year, Bryan Mone who got injured in camp but was considered one of Michigan's top players before getting injured and the #1 recruit in the nation Rashan Gary.    Jourdan Lewis is already impressed:
“You should see Rashan move,” Lewis said this week. “He’s very, very light on his feet. He and (nose tackle) Bryan Mone, it’s crazy. You should see them on the ladder drills. Oh my goodness, it’s unbelievable. At that size, you can’t teach stuff like that. It’s mind-blowing.”

Mone is listed in the spring roster at 6-foot-4, 320 pounds, while Gary is 6-5 and pushing 300 pounds.  The ladder drill develops footwork and quickness.

“It’s about how clean you are, and they barely touch that ladder,” Lewis said. “They are really fast on the ladder, and it’s really crazy.”

Reflections on Vietnam

Video produced by Brian Fisher

On a sunny weekend in June, more than 16,000 people helped Maryland Public Television (MPT) and Governor Larry Hogan salute the thousands of Marylanders who served during the Vietnam War.

LZ Maryland, which took place at the Maryland State Fairgrounds June 18-19, was part of MPT’s ongoing recognition of Vietnam veterans. MPT interviewed 98 men and women who served in various capacities during the war, and portions of those interviews comprise Maryland Vietnam War Stories. MPT has donated all of the interviews – more than 120 hours of raw, unedited footage – to the U.S. Library of Congress Veterans History Project and the Maryland Historical Society, preserving the conversations and the memories for future generations.

MDBiz recently sat down with three of our own Vietnam veterans:

They shared their memories, their stories, and their reflections in the above video.

Here’s a look at Maryland’s venture capital picture halfway through 2016

So far, the sky-high finish to 2015 hasn't continued.

In the second quarter of 2016, Maryland posted the lowest total of venture capital investments in the last two years.

In all, investors piped in about $72.2 million to companies, according to the latest MoneyTree Report fromPricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association. The data is provided by Thomson Reuters.

Michigan Monday: Air Jordan At The Big House

With the final few weeks before Fall Camp opens, there really isn't too much news coming out of Schembechler Hall.   Michigan will host recruits at the BBQ at the Big House (a hold over from the RR years) and then camp opens and we get back to business.

Many of us are waiting for 8/1 when the Nike/Jordan Brand becomes Michigan's official outfitter.   If I'm a betting man, I think there might be a run of #5 jerseys with the Jordan/Jumpman logo on it.   To celebrate that new relationship, Michael Jordan will be the honorary captain for the Hawaii game.    September 3rd will be the first time a football team will sport the Jordan brand.
  • The Big House Inmates speak:  73% of you feel Michigan should have kept the $2M and Arkansas on the schedule then play ND on the road.   I agree with you.  I love that ND is back on the schedule, I just don't like that ND looked like they won the negotiation.

  • Longtime Michigan RB Coach Fred Jackson lost a family member in the Baton Rouge shooting yesterday.   Fred is now the head coach at Ypsilanti High School.   Please send your support, prayers and thoughts to Fred and his family today.

  • If your wondering how RR is doing in Arizona, here is an article on RR going into his 5th year.  He is winning 62% of his games which is a lot better then most Arizona coaches in the past.   RR went 8-5 in his first two seasons, 10-4 in year 3 and 7-6 last year.   He also looked at a couple of openings last year as well.  RR makes just below $2M a year, but has a comp plan that includes a ($6M) big pay out if he is still the coach in 2018.  All in all, I think Arizona is happy with RR and getting to a bowl game every year (even if it's the New Mexico Bowl).

Frederick County Launches New Websites

Guest feature: Sandy Wagerman is a research specialist for the Frederick County Office of Economic Development. Follow Frederick County OED on Facebook and Twitter.

The Frederick County Office of Economic Development (OED) has launced a new agricultural website called HomegrownFrederick, which highlights the county’s agriculture, tourism and growing subsectors. The county has also redesigned its existing DiscoverFrederickMD.com, which aims to help businesses start, locate, expand and discover Frederick County.

Homegrown Frederick WebsiteHomegrownFrederick was officially launched at a Frederick Keys Game in June in partnership with the Tourism Council of Frederick County. Despite a rain-out of the actual game, staff officially unveiled it on the field with Maryland Farm Bureau President Chuck Fry giving the opening remarks and many farmers and economic development partners were in attendance. A reschedule date of August 24th has been set for 7pm.

In 2014, OED partnered with Frederick Magazine to produce the Homegrown Frederick magazine. Because of its huge success, OED now makes this an annual publication and worked with Frederick Magazine to be able to develop the website which compliments the Homegrown Frederick magazine.

HomegrownFrederick includes information on Frederick County’s creameries, equine industry, Christmas tree farms, events like Family Festival at the Farm, a farmers market listing, a CSA directory, a directory of restaurants that support local farmers, agriculture events and more.

A section on Frederick County’s rapidly growing craft beverages industry is displayed and users can search for wineries, breweries and distilleries. With the “farm-to-glass” movement on the rise nationally and locally, OED has used mapping technology for Frederick County’s craft beverages industry to help make visiting these locations easier.

Michigan Friday: Thinks About What Could Have Been With Derrick Green

Image result for derrick green
Zimbio
Derrick Green's career at Michigan is a microcosm of the Brady Hoke era.    Derrick came to Ann Arbor as a 5 star #1 RB in the country.    Many expected him to start right away and tear into the Big Ten like a hot knife through butter.

DG showed up in the summer of 2013 over weight and really had a hard time getting into football shape his freshman year.   In 2013, he got 83 carries but only gained 270 yards.

In 2014, his sophomore year we really thought DG started to figure it out.  He was in better shape, but was still a north and south runner who struggled to make defenders miss.   Ironically, he had 82 carries in 2014 (before he got hurt) for 471 yards.  That was an average of over 5 yards per carry.   His year was cut short with a shoulder injury.

Under Jimmy, I expected two scenarios:  he would play a lot and be the focus of the offense or he would barley see the field.   We know that Smith took over the #1 RB spot and Houma became the power back.  A healthy Green only got 47 carries for 157 yards last season.    Most of those carries came when Michigan was comfortably ahead and the offense needed to run some clock.

This 5 star RB got a total of 898 yards in 3 years in Michigan's offense.   Many of us expected that to be a low estimate for one year.  Not all of it is on DG as Michigan's offensive line struggled during this time in Ann Arbor, but his college career so far as been clearly disappointing.

Sources are saying that Derrick has decided to transfer to TCU.  If DG was able to graduate early from Michigan, he will be able to play this season.   TCU's spread offense, should provide DG with some large holes and I expect he could easily run for a 1000 yards in that offense if he gets enough touches.   I hope he is in shape and has the luck Rawls and Cox had in transferring for their final year and making it to an NFL roster.  Rawls had the highest yards per carry average of any NFL running back last year before getting injured.

Good Luck DG!

Promoting Maryland at the Farnborough Airshow

This week is the Farnborough International Airshow and I am excited to join Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford and nine outstanding small and mid-sized Maryland companies as we promote Maryland’s unparalleled assets and strategic location to a global audience.

Farnborough is truly a “not-to-be-missed” show. With more than 100,000 visitors and 1,500 exhibitors from around the world looking to buy and sell products and services, this is a unique opportunity to connect our Maryland businesses with partners and customers they may not have otherwise had a chance to meet.

This show also puts us in front of the senior decision-makers of the world’s top aerospace companies. Lt. Governor Rutherford and I have a number of meetings with companies to promote Maryland and all we have to offer, particularly our proximity to key federal agencies that are important to the aerospace industry, our highly-educated workforce and the fact that we are home to eight of the top 10 aerospace companies in the U.S., including Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, BAE Systems, and General Dynamics.

We also had a chance to check out the next generation of drone technology. A full-scale model of the Hoverbike is on display at our Maryland Pavilion. The Hoverbike is being developed for the U.S. Department of Defense by SURVICE Engineering Co., a Belcamp, Md.-based defense firm, and U.K.-based Malloy Aeronautics, an aeronautical engineering firm in cooperation with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC). Among its many applications when operational, the Hoverbike will be able to transport up to 600 pounds of critical supplies to soldiers in the field.

We are looking forward to some great connections and partnerships as a result of this show. If you are interested in taking your business global, we’d like to help. I encourage you to learn more on our website or call us at 410-767-3542.

-Mike

Michigan Thursday: Cornerback Gets The MSU Knocked Out of Him

MSU CB Jermaine Edmondson got into a scuffle with Warriors Draymond Green over the weekend and has now decided to leave the MSU football program.   It seems Edmondson and Green bumped into each other twice over the weekend in East Lansing and it ended with Green slapping Edmondson in front of the police early Sunday morning.   Green got arrested for simple assault and has put his Team USA status in jeopardy.

Edmondson then asked for his release from MSU yesterday, citing he is looking for more playing time and a place where he doesn't get "big timed" from famous former school athletes.  :-)

DeVeon Smith tweeted at Smith that he is soft, but then quickly deleted the tweet.

  • Michigan Basketball will open the season in the 2K Classic which will have the finals in MSG.  They will play Howard and IUPUI at Crisler and then play Marquette in the semi-final at MSG.

  • Michigan has signed a new radio deal with CBS Radio Detroit, WWJ Newsradio 950 (WWJ-AM), 97.1 The Ticket (WXYT-FM) and CBS Sports Radio 1270 (WXYT-AM).

  • If you are looking for low cost Michigan gear, MDen has their final markdowns on their Adidas Michigan gear.  Nike/Jordan Gear hits on 8/1.

  • OSU CB commit Shaun Wade might make it to A2 for the BBQ at The Big House.

  • Instate DB Ambry Thomas got offered by USC after his strong Opening performance.

Maryland receives several grants for cancer research

Researchers at several Maryland universities as well as the National Cancer Institute have been awarded $3,844,000 in grants by the American Cancer Society. The grants, which started July 1, went to researchers with Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland, College Park; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; and National Cancer Institute in a variety of disciplines.

The largest grant award in Maryland – $1.66 million – went to Cheryl L. Holt, director of the Center for Health Behavior Research at the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Holt is also the co-leader of the Population Science Program at the University of Maryland’s Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her grant award will be used to study the “Integration of Cancer Health Activities into African American Churches” in efforts to investigate the implications of cancer health disparities.

The American Cancer Society is the largest non-profit funding source for cancer research in the U.S., with investments totaling more than $4.5 billion since 1946. Forty seven Society-funded researchers have gone on to receive a Nobel Prize, and previous grant winners played critical roles in the development of cancer research breakthroughs.

The grant recipients’ research varies from prostate and brain cancer to individualized cancer screenings. The important sociological and scientific research these recipients are working on are part of the reason for improvements in the quality of health care and life-saving treatments.

In addition to Dr. Holt, the Maryland grant award winners for 2016 are:

  • $163,500: Amend, Sarah R., PhD, postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins University
  • $792,000: Leung, Anthony K. PhD, assistant professor Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • $300,000: Schoenborn, Nancy, MD, assistant professor, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
  • $163,500: Tubbs, Anthony, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, National Cancer Institute
  • $758,000: Woodworth, Graeme F., MD, co-director of the Translational Therapeutics Research Group, University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Wolverine Wednesday: Thank Goodness Michigan Didn't Hire....................

When Lloyd Carr retired Michigan struggled to find the right head coach.   They couldn't decide on Les and actually offered the job to the Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.   At the time, I thought it was a good choice.   Greg reportedly, accepted the job, declined the job and tried to re-accept.   By that time Sailboat Bill's boat as sailed to Rich Rod.

Many had expected that Greg would be inline for the Penn State job when Joe Paterno retired.   Greg didn't wait for a PSU offer and headed for a failed experience coaching Tampa Bay in the NFL.   We all know what happened at Penn State and many of us believed there was zero chance that Joe and others on the staff didn't know what Sandusky was doing.

Depositions were released yesterday, show that Paterno knew as early at 1976 when a young camper approached him about an assault.  He replied, "I don't want to hear about any of that stuff, I have a football season to worry about".   That statement to me sounds like a person, who had heard that allegation before and had taken a blind eye to it.   There were also reports from 1987 and twice in 1988 of staff witnessing Sandusky.

The depositions also say that Greg Schiano and Tom Bradley knew what was going on.  Both have denied knowing after the reports came out yesterday.    Neither would have a spot on my staff.  Schiano is the assistant head coach at Ohio State and Bradley is the DC for UCLA.

This is the worst thing to ever happen to college football.  I don't know how you ever hire anyone that is even remotely associated with it.

-----------------------------

Moving on to some lighter topics.

  • Some freshman are strong! Gary is said to have put up (bench press) 225 pounds 26 times and Khaleke Hudson tweeted he did 25.    Expect to see both of these guys on the field early and often.

  • It seems that Michigan might have been knocked out of the pole position for both Cesar Ruiz (Alabama) and Drew Singleton (Clemson).   Jimmy and staff have their work cut out for both of these guys.  The good thing is Michigan is a close second or 1A.

  • 4 Star DT Jay Tufele has a top 3 of Michigan, OSU at Utah.

  • 4 star OT Jedrick Willis is planning another visit for the BBQ at the Big House

As #bmoretech grows, pay attention to diversity and creativity

That was the message from the Baltimore stakeholder meeting that Technical.ly convened last month. A discussion of how the city's tech community sees itself.

There are plenty of metrics that indicate Baltimore’s startup scene is growing, but it’s worth reflecting on how that expansion is happening. Behind each one of those stats lies a community that’s leaning on each other, and challenging each other when necessary.

Take jobs.

Tech businesses that started small now post the kind of fast growth where they need to hire quickly. It’s a mark of the community that a business like Mindgrub can hire 20 people just by reaching out to their network.

“We have not yet used a recruiter at Mindgrub,” said Kelly Brown, the Locust Point-based agency’s internal marketing manager. She joined the company among that uptick, which in turn followed its official relocation into the city.

Minimum Wage, Maximum Pain.

Nonprofits around the region are scrambling to address budgetary gaps caused by changes in labor laws. As leaders scramble to find solutions, overlooked opportunities may exist to cut operating costs and grow revenues through smarter application of information technology.

On July 1st, the minimum wage in Maryland increased by nearly 6% while in DC it jumped by almost 10%.  On June 27th, District took things a step further as the Mayor signed a bill to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020.  Similar legislation is expected to pass soon in the City of Baltimore.  These changes are being rapidly followed by another expensive policy change: New FLSA overtime rules will go into effect this December adding to the already heavy pressure on regional nonprofits’ budgets.

Unless nonprofit leaders find innovative ways to cover these substantial payroll cost increases, many will be forced to make tough decisions in the next few months. A recent article in the Baltimore Business Journal highlighted the potentially devastating effects that the wage increases could bring, with some fearing that organizations may be “forced to cut services, lay off workers or even shift locations”.

This is obviously a nightmare scenario for many organizations and unless we are prepared to see diminished roles for important nonprofits around the region, action must be taken now to ensure these institutions can continue to serve the community.

One of the ways proactive leaders can get ahead of this coming fiscal crunch is by ensuring their organizations are running at peak efficiency.  For many that means a much closer look at their Information Technology portfolios including capabilities, budgets, and governance.

IT Capabilities

Information technology has grown tremendously powerful in the last few decades.  Staff are walking around today with more computing power in their pockets than the systems that guided astronauts to the moon.  Just because IT is powerful though, doesn’t mean it is being optimally deployed in an organization.

Nonprofits have traditionally lagged behind other industries in adopting new technologies.  Many hold on to systems long past what most corporate organizations would consider to be the useful service life.  This may have saved money by deferring replacement costs, but as these systems age, they bring other problems to light.  Support costs often increase over time as it becomes more and more difficult to find qualified staff to maintain systems and applications.  In addition, a lack of automation, an inability to integrate systems, and the emergency of inefficient processes that have grown up around out of date technology are all a drag on the efficiency of today’s nonprofits.

Beyond the hardware, software, and services being deployed, many organization aren’t able to maximize their existing IT investments due to gaps in their users’ knowledge.  Targeted training focused on process improvement, better and more approachable documentation, and an ongoing effort to grow knowledge should be a part of any IT planning initiative.

IT Budgeting

When it comes to budgeting, IT is often seen as a cost center, meaning that its budget should be reduced during lean times. This thinking is shortsighted and outdated. Approaches like taking an “across the board cut” in organizations often misfire.  After all, there are numerous examples where an increase in IT budgets drove substantial cost reductions elsewhere in the business.  If deploying new IT capabilities can deliver efficiencies elsewhere, how does cutting the IT budget make sense?

Similarly, attempting to align IT budgets with benchmarks from across the industry often delivers less than stellar results.  These numbers lack any sort of reflection to the organization’s structure, scale, capabilities, or mission.  Attempting to budget based solely on these numbers is therefore meaningless.

IT Governance

One of the least understood components of information technology is IT Governance.  Put simply, this is the method by which decisions about IT are made and executed.  Decision rights for IT go beyond the IT department or the CIO, and involve a broad base of stakeholders. There are two very common governance structures that both have substantial drawbacks for organizations undergoing change.

The first is a decentralized, ad-hoc approach to IT. This is a weak form of governance where decisions are often made by individual users, managers, or departments.  A lack of standardization and planning has predictable results.  Systems and applications are often incompatible with one another and the costs to maintain the IT infrastructure is very high.

The second is more of a “dictatorship” model where a strong IT department dictates standards, deploys systems, and defines the future plans for the organization.  The gap here is that while the trains may run on time, they don’t necessarily go where users need them to.  The end users are often left wanting (sometimes they revolt) and IT can end up misaligned with the rest of the organization.

A better path is to strike a balance between these two approaches.  Certain aspects of IT should be managed by the IT department, but with input from users, leadership, and even outside advisors.  Other decisions should be left to others, with IT in a supporting role to enable their vision. Creating an effective governance structure allows organizations to maximize the utility of their IT investments and have control over its direction.

#TimeForAChange

As progressive reforms around compensation continue to sweep through the region, it is time for nonprofit leaders to prepare their organizations to meet the upcoming fiscal challenges.  IT planning and strategy should be a key part of that conversation.  If you’re ready to get started before things get rough, here’s a couple of options to consider:

  1. Move Infrastructure to the Cloud – This shifts your fixed costs to variable costs which can adjust to reflect the size and scope of your organization.  Reduced complexity of in-house infrastructure also means you can potentially reduce your IT staffing needs. Significant discounts given to nonprofits by the major cloud players (Microsoft,Google, & Amazon) make this a very affordable proposition if you have the right team on your side to plan and manage the transition.
  2. Consider New Applications to Reduce Costs – IT is ubiquitous throughout your organization, but are you using it to cut back on costly administrative tasks?  Reducing overhead around policies and procedures can free up senior staff to focus on the mission instead of shuffling papers around.  Cutting training time means you can quickly train staff and reduce your onboarding costs.  This is going to be particularly important for high turnover roles that will be increasingly expensive to fill.  Having a solution that validates employee compliance and acknowledgment around policies can lower the risk of legal action.  All of these can be addressed with one solution: Acadia Performance Platform
  3. Revamp Your Web Presence – Does your website drive donors to you or is it a source of frustration?  Are visitors able to understand your mission and help support your goals?  Can your staff update and maintain it without having to jump through hoops?  If your website doesn’t match the professionalism of your organization, redesigning it can help bring you more success.
