Anyone expecting artificial intelligence to bring about a Skynet-esque doom will have to wait a while. There is, though, a more immediate threat posed by AI. It has the power to do criminal tasks more efficiently than any human can manage.
This was proven to me this month in the form of a challenge: could I trick more Twitter users into clicking on potentially-evil links than some AI-powered bots? In early July, I spoke with two data scientists from security company ZeroFOX, John Seymour and Philip Tully, who told me they were creating AI that learnt from the social network how best to convince people to hit links. Online crooks lure people into clicking on links – known commonly as phishing – to lead them to another page where either malware will be thrust at their PC, or they’ll be asked to enter more personal data, such as passwords or banking information.
