Michigan Friday: Peppers to Cleveland and Taco to Dallas

Usually, I don't applaud anything that the Browns do, last night I did as they picked Jabrill late in round one with the 25th pick.   Three picks later Dallas picked up Taco with the 28th pick.

This is a win for the players and the Michigan program.   I know both guys wanted to go higher but all that anyone will remember is that they were first round picks.   Congratulations to both guys!

I like that Jabrill will get to work with Greg Williams who will find a way to use his talents and a pass rusher is a huge need for the Cowboys.   It's also good that Pep will only be a few hours away from campus if he needs support or wants to come back to A2 for a game.

  • Peppers released the practice video of him pulling a hamstring before the Orange Bowl.  This should silence the "he sat out" conversations.

  • I expect to see Worm go pretty early today in Round 2.   I thought this is also the day we were going to see Jourdan Lewis, but after his charges, I'm not sure where he will be picked now.   Hopefully, Jake will go in Round 2.   I believe he has an insurance policy that he can collect on if he drops past the second round.   (I have also heard those policy's are hard to collect on, but with his ACL injury it would seem to be pretty cut and dry)

  • Mark May is out at ESPN, per the layoffs this week.   Even though Trey Wingo has been doing the second and third day of the drafts for many years, I thought he struggled in the big seat last night.

  • Yesterday Dennis Norfleet signed with the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders.

  • Dalvin Cook didn't get drafted in round 1 after he ran through Michigan's defense in South Florida and MSU's Malik McDowell was at the draft but didn't get selected.

  • Reports are former Michigan Basketball Player Mark Donnal is heading to Clemson.

  • Reports are starting to leak out that Jimmy and Staff will do a co-camp in GA at Valdosta State and one with UCLA in LA.

Michigan Thursday: Draft Day and My Take on The ESPN Layoffs

Today is a huge day for a couple of Wolverines.   Peppers might have punched his ticket out of the first round by having the diluted sample.   I don't know if he was just pounding waters or made a dumb decision and smoked a little weed before the combine.   Either way, he is going to outplay his draft position.   We know what he can do on the field and Pep will make some team better whether he is picked in the 1st or 2nd rounds.    (On a side note, I'm wondering how many calls Jimmy has taken this week in Rome from NFL people asking about Pep and if he ever failed a drug test while at Michigan).

I'm very happy for Taco.  He played well his senior year and excited that the NFL scouts see him as a 1st round talent.   He has the body and we know he has been coached well from Coach Mattison.   At this point he seems like the only Wolverine lock in the first round.

I expect to hear the rest of the Wolverine crew on Friday or this weekend.   This day has to be a little bitter sweet for Jake Butt, who before his ACL in the Orange Bowl might have been a good bet to been in the 1st round.

Other Michigan Players expected to get drafted include:  Chris Wormley, Jake Butt, Jourdan Lewis, Amara Darboh, Jehu Chesson and Ryan Glasgow.

These guys are on the bubble:  Delano Hill, Channing Stribling, Ben Gedeon and Erik Magnuson.

These guys are expected to sign as free agents:  Jeremy Clark, Ben Braden, Kyle Kalis, DeVeon Smith, Kenny Allen, Matt Godin and Dymonte Thomas.

ESPN Layoffs

The world of sports is changing folks.  Fox will start covering Big 10 football this season and ESPN has lost 12 Million subscribers in the last 5 years due to cord cutters.   ESPN yesterday had a layoff that hit a lot of on air talent.

The cost to cover the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA and other sports has sky rocked into the billions of dollars and the loss of subscribers has now cut to the bone for the World Wide Leader.   What does this mean?  It means ESPN will have to do more with less and we will continue to see more on-line providers providing cable like content at a margin of the cost.

Many Michigan fans were cheering that Danny Kannell lost his job after he ripped Peppers for the diluted sample and not playing in the Orange Bowl.  His take was incorrect (for the Orange Bowl) but I never cheer when people loose their jobs.   His afternoon radio show was also struggling after he tried to fill the spot left by SVP.

I expect this situation to continue as ESPN tries to find the balance between cable and online content.   I also predict the Big Ten Universities will start seeing less money from the BTN as this situation will hit that network at some point as well.   (The BTN charges cable companies a lot less then the ESPN/Disney buddle).

  • Michigan took to the field today for the first time for a practice in Rome.

  • Charmin drops off a truck load of its product to Jake Butt.

Baltimore’s new Parkway unites cinema history with the future of film

For 40 years, one of the oldest movie theaters in the country sat empty on Baltimore’s North Avenue, languishing behind the grocery store that had moved into its lobby area. Behind a wall erected by the store’s owner, the theater’s domed ceiling, grand balcony and elaborate, decorative molding lay unseen and largely forgotten.

Now after a multi-year campaign to raise the money, the Parkway Theatre has been resurrected as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway to serve as both a permanent home for the Maryland Film Festival and new, year-round destination for film and arts programming in Baltimore.

“We have a team of programmers that can really provide thoughtful, innovative programming that isn’t seen in Baltimore,” said Adrienne Peres, director of development and marketing for the 19-year-old film festival, which runs from May 3 through May 7. “We have a lot of initiatives that we’re launching this year in terms of community programming. That’s something that is a huge area of focus for us.”

An early example will occur at a lot across North Avenue from the theater, which will become a free, pop-up venue showing student films from the greater Baltimore area on May 6 and May 7. Regular screenings and events at the theater itself will continue after the festival concludes, and film students from Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Institute College of Art will be able to use the building to screen and discuss their work.

Baltimore Parkway Theater“[Baltimore] is such an under-served film community, as a city,” Peres said. More than 900 films are reviewed each year by The New York Times, but only about 300 of them come to Baltimore, she said. “There is a real appetite in Baltimore to have access to those films that we’re now going to be able to show here.”

Originally built in 1915, the Parkway hails from an era when motion pictures were still in their infancy and cinemas were often designed like other theaters; as a result the Parkway feels a bit more like an opera house than a modern multiplex. The balcony, for example, curls forward at each end so some seats seem to hover over the audience below.

The Parkway hasn’t undergone a typical restoration, in which the old is made to look brand-new again. While there are new elements – new seats in the main theater, for example, as well as a lounge area where craft beer will be served, and two smaller screening rooms – the architects have left many of the cinema’s original design components just as they were found.

This means that when you sit in the main theater you can still see both the wear and tear on the walls as well as evidence of previous renovations and modifications made to the building over the course of the last 102 years.

Some of the paint is faded and discolored, for example, some of it has been scratched away to reveal the older colors underneath, some of the decorative elements are chipped or cracked. The result is beautiful but also mysterious – the Parkway is simultaneously old and new, a place unstuck in time.

“Since filmmaking is storytelling, we wanted to make sure the building told its stories through our approach to the design, which let the walls speak for themselves,” said Steve Ziger of Ziger/Snead, the Baltimore architecture firm that oversaw the latest renovation. “It speaks to the history of movie-going and filmmaking in this amazing location.”

Funding for the new theater was provided by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the State of Maryland, and dozens of other donors.

Baltimore Parkway Theater Donors

The theater’s location is also symbolic of its new mission. As Peres points out, the Parkway is located at the geographic center of Baltimore and can serve as a resource for the entire city.

“Film, as an art form, is one of the most affordable, most democratic, most accessible art forms,” Peres said. “The mission of the film festival has always been ‘Film for Everyone.’ Now, with the Parkway, we’re able to expand that and have “Film for Everyone. Every Day.”

Wolverine Wednesday: Harbaugh Meets The Pope Today

Jim Harbaugh met the Pope today and gave him a Michigan helmet and a pair of Jordan's.    Another proof point (if you needed one) that our head coach is a rock star.

They took a tour of Rome including the Coliseum and played paint ball yesterday.   What a great trip for the entire team.

  • The rumor mill on twitter is saying that Michigan is trying to get out of the agreement to do a home and home with the University of Washington in 2020 and 2021.

  • Grant Newsome tells Angelique that he was minutes away from losing his leg.   I have seen serious football injuries before but I don't recall ever seeing one so serious that a player might lose his leg.   Thank goodness that didn't happen.

  • Current Michigan fan and former NY Yankee Derrick Jeter  is part of the ownership group that is trying to purchase the Miami Marlins.   How many of us would have signed up for Jeter's life?

Michigan Tuesday: Darn It Jabrill

I hated to hear the news yesterday that Jabrill tested positive for a diluted sample at the NFL Combine.   As you know, the NFL considers a diluted sample a positive test.   Peppers camp is saying that Jabrill was under the weather that week and cramping and killed at ton of waters and Gatorade.   Either way, this doesn't help his draft stock.   I hope he decides not to attend the Draft.

  • Jimmy gets in trouble for playing catch in a Shopping Mall in Rome.

  • Jake Long after years of injuries and being the #1 pick in 2008, officially retires from the NFL.

  • Michigan Basketball is going to take a Grad Transfer from a Point Guard from Ohio named Jaaron Simmons.  He seems like he has been a volume shooter on a team that didn't have a ton of scorers.   He averaged 16 points and 6 assists per game.  Read more about him at UMhoops.

  • Since DTR is headed to UCLA, Michigan is down to Florida's Joe Milton and Arizona's Tyler Shough.  The Crystal Balls have been favoring Michigan for Joe and Tyler just got a visit from Pep before the Rome trip.   There is some buzz that Michigan might take both, which seems a bit strange with limited spots in this class.

  • With Will Mallory headed to Miami, Michigan's TE sights are set on Mustapha Muhammad (who could be a silent) and Jeremy Ruckert who could be down to Michigan and OSU.

Michigan Monday: Not A Good Weekend For Recruiting

The Wolverines loaded up a plane this weekend and headed to Rome.   They are having a once in a lifetime opportunity and I hope they take advantage of everything this trip has to offer.    It seems ESPN and others are coving the trip, so it should be fun to watch the updates this week. (here is a link to an interview with Wilton and Mary Smith of ESPN)  The weekend was a positive for the guys on the roster, but a negative for the potential 2018 class.

The first loss was a pretty big surprise as legacy recruit Will Mallory a 6'5 TE from Jacksonville picked Miami.  He had been trending that way for a few weeks and pulled the trigger on a commitment on Friday night.   Miami has the top ranked recruiting class currently on Scouts.  I wonder if Mallory will make it to A2 for visit before NSD?

Next loss was not a surprise as Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) picked UCLA over Michigan on Sunday night.   DTR's mother is a Michigan grad and they were just up to A2 for a visit for the Spring Game.   UCLA has been rumored to be DTR's leader for a few months and he made his verbal to the Bruins on Sunday night.   The turning point was when Jedd left Michigan to become the OC at UCLA.   On a side note, DTR hasn't started in high school yet and this will be his first year as a starter.   DTR sat behind Tate Martell (OSU) last year.

  • It's looking like Mel Pearson is going to replace Red as Michigan's new hockey coach.  I don't know anything about hockey but Mel was a former Michigan assistant under Red.   Mel left for Michigan Tech and turned them into a strong program.  Sounds like a strong hire.

  • MSU Football is having a troubling off season.   The latest is former 4 star DE Auston Robertson who was charged with a serious sexual assault late last week.   He was thrown off the team on Friday and was apprehended on Sunday night after the Police were searching for him for most of the weekend.   He played in 6 games as a true freshman last season and competed in the MSU Spring game on 4/1.

  • Penn State lost a 5 star DE this weekend as Micah Parsons de-comittted.   Parsons had been committed to Penn State for over a year but de-committed this weekend, same weekend he visited Happy Valley for the Spring Game.   Ohio State is the team to beat now.

Mountain Maryland gears up for festival season

Guest feature: Caitlin Squires works with the Allegany County Department of Tourism. Follow Mountain Maryland on Facebook and Twitter.

This Memorial Day weekend, the Allegany County Fairgrounds will once again be alive with the sound of acoustic folk, bluegrass, newgrass, and roots-rock music at the annual DelFest.

The four-day festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and in a big way. What Rolling Stone magazine hails as “one of the best string-based lineups of the summer” will see the addition of country-music superstar Dierks Bentley, who will play alongside a DelFest staple, The Travelin’ McCourys.

The festival will host favorites like Sierra Hull, Railroad Earth, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, and of course the festival’s namesake, The Del McCoury Band. Head for the hills May 25-28 and immerse yourself in Mountain Maryland’s premier down-home music fest.

DelFest won’t be the only great attraction to grace the Fairgrounds this year. The Greater Cumberland Raceway has been revamped; for the first time in three years, cars will once again be hitting the dirt-track in races scheduled April through October. Contestants from Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and even Delaware are already slated to compete. Be sure to grab a ticket and head to the grandstands for this family-friendly thrill that’s sure to rev up motorheads of all ages.

Additionally, returning to Cumberland for its second year will be the Whiskey Rebellion Festival – two days of history, music and entertainment, and of course, whiskey. Sagamore Spirit of Baltimore, White Tiger Distillery of Stevensville, and McClintock Distilling Company of Frederick are just three of the many returning distilleries to this year’s event.

The whiskey tasting will take place on Friday, June 9 from 6-11 p.m. at the Allegany Museum. Period-appropriate musical performances, local history lectures, and fun activities for all participants will take place Saturday, June 10, starting at noon and ending with a concert at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

Stay tuned to MDMountainSide.com for more details as they emerge.

Michigan Thursday: Both Injuries Minor

Jimmy said yesterday that both Spring Game injuries to McDoom and Runyan Jr. were ankles and neither are expected to be serious.   Good News!

  • It seems the insiders are now considering DTR a pretty strong UCLA lean, so we probably shouldn't hold our breathe for Sunday's announcement.  Of course, Jimmy could have worked some magic last weekend and convinced him A2 is the place to be.

  • That would leave FL QB Joe Milton and AZ QB Tyler Shough left on the board.  Joe seemed to enjoy his visit last weekend and Tyler is expected North next month.

  • I failed to let you know about the Green twins visiting earlier this week as well.  Gemon and German both play CB and would like to be a package deal.   They are from Texas so it might be hard to get them away from home if they get some offers from in-state schools.   Maybe Texas and their $10K lockers will offer them.

  • Michigan's top prospect this year is Traverse City OL Ryan Hayes who might speed up his timeline from late summer to this spring.   With Michigan's tight numbers, this might be a good idea if he wants to come to Ann Arbor.

  • TX TE Mustapha Muhammad would like to wait to announce his decision publically until NSD.  Many insiders believe MM gave Jimmy and the Michigan coaches a firm handshake this past weekend.

  • Michigan's other instate OL prospect Jalen Mayfield is getting some love from ND.

Please note, Michigan's Spring Practices are not over and the team will practice and even do a scrimmage in Rome.

Wolverine Wednesday: McDoom Seen In Walking Boot

Eddie McDoom was tackled after a catch late in the game on Saturday.   He stayed on the ground with a leg injury and limped off the field.    Watching the video many fans were concerned because they didn't see the ankle turn or the knee flex in the wrong  direction.   When you don't see a reason for the injury many get concerned it's serious like an ACL snapping or an Achilles tear.

Eddie was seen yesterday in a walking boot and insiders are saying that its just a sprained ankle, which is great news.   I was worried he wouldn't be able to take the trip to Rome next month if it was a serious injury.

  • The curious case of Tyrone Sampson.   Ty is a 4 star offensive lineman (center) from Detroit,  who is 6'3 300 pounds.   He just visited for Michigan's spring game and then yesterday commits to Syracuse.   His offer list is a strange one, with the likes of MAC Schools, Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, and Minnesota.   Maybe he needs to put some more snaps on tape and have a strong senior year for more instate offers.   Neither Michigan or MSU has offered.

  • 3 Star AZ QB Tyler Shough who is expected to visit next month, just picked up an Alabama offer.

  • Like we didn't know this was coming:  Penn State will do it's annual white out for the Michigan game.   Will Michigan wear the all whites road jerseys that day?

  • 4 Star Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter’s Prep LB/S prospect Shayne Simon was on campus yesterday for his first visit to Ann Arbor.  Simon keeps his recruitment pretty quiet but it is known that he is very serious about his education.  Can Jimmy continue the NJ pipeline?

  • DTR's mom (a Michigan grad) on the visit last week“The Michigan visit had an impact. It went above and beyond what we expected. As far as its impact … it probably caused him to pause and think a minute. As far as if it’s going to make him commit, I can’t say. The visit just caught us by surprise — the fans knowing who he was and wanting to be around him, the alumni, the football players and we didn’t understand the Michigan roster until now.“We sat down with Pep Hamilton and Jim Harbaugh. They showed us how all of their plays are being run at Dorian’s high school right now, they’re just called different names.”

Michigan Tuesday: Let's Talk About The Offensive Line and Young WR's

Michigan's biggest weakness maybe has the biggest guys.  The offense line is a unit that under achieved last year and probably cost Michigan a playoff spot.   So Saturday was the first real public outing on what the new line might look like next season.

The starting offensive line on Saturday looked like this:  Cole/Bredeson/Kugler/Onwenu/Runyan Jr..
It seems that Cole move to Left Tackle (from Center) is now in cement and the coaches are more comfortable with Bredeson at Guard rather then Right Tackle.

JBB was banged up and is expected to be the starter at Right Tackle.   If Jon Jr. can be a backup or a quality co-starter, that is a huge bonus for offensive line that is very light on the depth chart.  Cesar Ruiz from all reports is football ready and will play a big role at the center position.  He also played a little Guard in the second half as well.

Another guy that Mgoblog picked up on is the play of walk-on Andrew Vastardis.  He played well with the second team on Saturday.   Michigan also has 3 guys coming in this summer as true freshman: Andy Stueber, Joel Honigford and Chuck Filiaga.   Chuck is rumored to be the most "football ready" of the three.   Having Vastardis and Jon Jr. in the mix will help the depth chart and take some pressure off Chuck being game ready for Dallas.

Michigan's Wide Receivers:

Do you remember when Michigan had a hard time finding elite WR's because we ran the ball too much?   I still don't think we truly understand how great this WR class really is and some of the great players we have already.

Crawford - Didn't play much which seems to be a good sign that he is a starter and the coaches have seen enough.

McDoom - Played and got hurt - hopefully it's not serious.

DP-J - Has been getting a ton of buzz and we saw a couple of glimpses on Saturday.  Huge ceiling here.

Black - Played great and was a difference maker on the jump ball.  We will see him a lot this fall.

The Nates:  Johnson had a tough day with two fumbles (one being a dropped punt) but walk-on Schoenle came out of nowhere and had a huge day with a couple of big catches.

Let's not us forget what we still having coming this summer:

Nico Collins is a big body and will play a role in this offense.

Oliver Martin - maybe heading for a redshirt if the McDoom isn't hurt seriously and if Grant Perry gets his East Lansing situation resolved and comes off suspension.

Brad Hawkins is probably headed for the defensive backfield now.

Are the old men out:  Drake Harris and Moe Ways?  I'm sure they will find a way to use Moe, I'm concerned about Drake's health.

Either way Jimmy and Pep have a ton of weapons to use this year and Michigan might light of the scoreboard if we get some good QB play.

Apprentice program focuses on booming IT and cyber fields

TranZed Apprenticeship Services in Baltimore County is not only redefining the word “apprentice,” but also the options high school and college grads have to get into Maryland’s workforce.

As the state’s first registered apprenticeship program, TranZed has combined on-the-job training with relevant classroom time in hot fields such as IT, cybersecurity, and digital media. According to TranZed Director Kimberly H. Neal, the program is tailor-made for every participant.

“From day one, our apprentices are full-time employees,” Neal said. “They will receive 144 hours of customized classroom instruction built with input from their employer so that it is directly relevant to the job they are hired to perform. Each apprentice also has a mentor that they meet with regularly and who observes them in the workplace to ensure they’re thriving in their position.”

Anyone 18 and older can become a TranZed apprentice regardless of whether they have a college degree or not. The company has found the program suits both people not interested in going to a traditional four-year college and those looking to make a career change or struggling to get their foot in the door at a company.

The result is a mutual investment between employer and apprentice that fosters loyalty. The business benefits by increased retention, reduced internal investment, and by gaining a motivated employee. The apprentice benefits by receiving a relevant education without debt and a lucrative career path with a company that has groomed them as a key team member.

“Our first apprentice was 51 years old,” said Neal. “The average age of our participants is 24 years old and many have college degrees but have struggled to get that first job. Often, in the IT sector, material learned in a four-year college program is stale by graduation. Our one-year program ensures relevancy.”

The program, which kicked off during National Apprenticeship Week in November of last year, has been championed by Governor Larry Hogan; Kelly M. Schultz, Secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and Mike Gill, Secretary of the Department of Commerce.

This month, TranZed was awarded a pair of grants from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to broaden their apprenticeship offerings and provide more assistance with interview skills and other practical job training.

“Apprenticeship programs don’t have to solely focus on skilled labor to still provide valuable on- the-job training that you can’t replicate in a college setting,” said Secretary Gill. “TranZed is producing a skilled workforce for the State of Maryland that will be well-versed in the latest developments in the cyber and IT fields.”

Maryland is the leading employer of electronics engineers, software developers and information security analysts and was ranked number one in STEM job concentration by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s States Innovate 2015 study.

TranZed hopes to increase participation and increase their locations in Maryland to serve even more apprentices in a wider range of work fields. Currently, the program has 67 apprentices in the workforce and their first participants will graduate at the end of this year.

“There is no barrier to the amount of apprenticeships we can offer because of the flexibility of our classes,” Neal said. “I’m extremely enthusiastic with how TranZed has performed and where it is going in the future.”

For more information about becoming an apprentice, teaching classes as an adjunct professor, or participating as an employer, visit tranzedapprenticeships.com.

Michigan Monday: Spring Game in Revew: The Future is Bright!

The Spring Game is like when your a child and get a sneak a peek at your Christmas presents on Thanksgiving.    You get a quick glimpse of what your future might look like.   Saturday was that for me, I also saw that I might be getting a itchy sweater.

Let's use the famous BHB post game Cheers and Jeers on what I like and what I didn't:

Cheers:
  • Michigan RB's are deep and elite.   Any of those guys can play and be the starter. What a luxury!
  • The young WR's are dynamic.   Tarik Black is going to play and play a lot!  He looked like a junior out there not a high school senior.   DPJ caught a few balls but we will keep that gift under wraps for a few more months.   Hello walk-on Nate Schoenle!  I had never heard of this guy before Saturday and now he could be the starting slot WR.  He played great!
  • On a very windy day, I liked the ball that Brandon Peters was throwing.  He also made a great decision on a rushing TD.
  • The TE's are going to play well and there are a ton of them.   Gentry started the game with a long TD and a nice move to miss a defender.   Nick Eubanks had a couple grabs and a couple drops.  The word is he is having some issues catching the ball.   I didn't even see Bunting in there and he might be the best TE on the roster.
  • Quinn Nordin bombed a long field goal!
  • The defensive line pressured the QB pretty much non-stop.   They will continue to be one of the best units in the country for the second straight year.
  • Khaleke Hudson isn't Peppers but he might be very good.   He seemed to be all over the place in the Viper role and looks very physical.
  • I also loved how Devin Bush played.   He rushed the passer and covered the field well.   Don Brown will find a place for him to play.  Whether it's the Will or Middle LB.
  • Keith Washington hasn't been getting any press during Spring Ball but I thought he was one of the better CB's on the day.  Benjamin St-Juste also made some nice plays and was in the right position on a couple catches.   He is going to be good.
  • Please keep making Glasgows! Jordan had a 100 yard pick 6!

Jeers:
  • I would have given Wilton a D- grade on the day.   I know it was very windy and the Michigan defense probably knows many of the plays they are running but he looked like a freshman not a senior.   That knock on the door is Mr. Peters.
  • Injuries:  JBB, Dwumfour and J'Marick Woods both sat out the scrimmage.   Jon Runyan Jr. and McDoom both went out with leg injuries during the game.   Let's hope neither are serious.  Drake Harris and Alex Malzone weren't dressed either.
  • It's really hard for me to say how the offensive line played but I thought they did much better on running plays then pass protection.   I think I saw a little Greg Frey influence on a few of those run blocks/plays.

Recruiting Highlights:
  • DTR loved his visit and is now down to 2 schools.  Michigan and UCLA, he will announce his decision on Sunday night. His teammate Brevin Jordan committed to Miami after the visit.
  • Michigan seemed to make a big impression on  Houston 4 star TE Mustapha Muhammad.  I would put him on commit watch.
  • Guys who visited and had a good time include:  Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central 2018 OT Jalen Mayfield, OL Tyrone Sampson and a number of 2019 guys.

Columbia Startup Empowers Patients with Mobile Tech, Lowers Health Care Costs

A Columbia-based healthcare technology company is making it easier than ever for chronically ill patients to monitor and improve their health. Vheda Health is a startup that works with Medicaid and Medicare health plans to decrease medical expenses and improve compliance with their mobile care management platform, enabling patients to manage chronic conditions in real-time.

Through their health plans, participating patients receive Vheda care packages, which are customized based on condition. The kit may include tools such as a scale, blood pressure monitor and oxygen monitor. Health data is collected from these devices in real-time. As real-time values from the biometric devices come in, the Vheda platform compares them to thresholds the patient’s doctor has set in a care plan. If the data is higher or lower than the threshold, an alert is triggered so the health plan and physician can work with the patient to normalize the value prior to an escalating event, such as an emergency room visit or hospitalization. This data is also available to the patient’s provider.

“We offer a new way—a better way—for patients to engage with their health plan and manage their conditions,” said Vheda CEO Shameet Luhar.

Vheda’s health programs were designed with the Medicaid and Medicare populations in mind with the goal of eliminating as many steps as possible, Luhar said. Traditionally, monitoring health stats meant carrying around a notebook, writing down information, and reporting that back to a doctor/health care plan. Vheda, through its mobile care management platform, automates the process into one step.

“Our focus is on making the experience as simple as possible for patients through technology. The result is decreasing hospitalizations and increasing care plan compliance,” Luhar said.

Vheda Health is improving the health of people across the country, and as a result, decreasing hospitalizations and emergency room visits among its users.

The company reports an 87 percent engagement rate, 84 percent compliance rate, and a 71 percent annual hospitalization reduction among Medicaid and Medicare plan members. In turn, health insurance plans save money—approximately $17,175 annually per member—the company reports.

The nearly four year old company has 12 million end users nationwide. Vheda is part of the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship (MCE), and Luhar says mentorship and opportunities provided by MCE has been instrumental to the company’s success.

Through its affiliation with the Howard Tech Council and SCORE Network, the MCE provides “instant, expert advice to entrepreneurs,” said Howard Tech Council Director Tracy Turner. With Howard County’s Executive Allan Kittleman recently outlining plans for an “innovation district” in Columbia, there’s a clear alignment between the future plans for the area and what’s happening with the MCE.

For Turner, there’s a lot of pride for what the Howard Tech Council, MCE, and its member companies are doing for Howard County. “We’re very proud of what we’re doing for Howard County, and we’re proud of what Vheda Health is doing,” Turner said.

Vheda Health has been the recipient of numerous accolades during its rise, including: Health Technology Company of the Year in Howard County (2014), Best Startup in the State of Maryland by Startup Maryland (2015), and Best Health Technology Company in Maryland by the Maryland Incubator Association (2016).

Michigan Friday: What I Will Be Watching On Saturday

Image result for Michigan Spring GAme
detroitjockcity.com
You have to love Spring, winter is heading out the door and the taste from the Iowa, OSU and FSU loss is still in your mouth.  We were happy on signing day but now it's time to get back to work and see the Wolverines scrimmage at the Big House.

The Big Ten bumped Michigan to show the OSU spring game live.   Which of course is a terrible idea and someone at BTN and the Big Ten Conference should have their T&E budget cut in half as a penalty.  The game will be live on internet or you can watch it tape delayed on BTN.

Either way, here is what I will be looking for tomorrow:

Offense:
  • Improved QB Play:  Wilton was great and not so great in Michigan's loses last year.   Yes, the offensive line had a lot to do with that but he needs to take another step in a positive direction this year.   Is John O'Korn ready?  Is Brandon Peters the next great Michigan QB?  Give me hope quarterbacks!

  • Offensive line:  The last unit had experience but wasn't very good.  Does this new unit play well together and do we have some guys that are really going to take this offense to the next level?  Please don't let us rely on true freshman who aren't even on campus yet!

  • The Young put talented WR core - Who is the #1 guy?  DPJ is he ready to be star as a freshman? The hype of Crawford has been very positive this spring.  Is McDoom ready to live up to his last name?

  • I'm not worried about TE or RB's.  I think we are good there.  Would like to see something from Gentry and Wheat though.

Defense:
  • Can the Defensive Line still be dominating with new starters on it?

  • Who are the starting CB's?  I want to see how good Long is.

  • Who is ready to play the Viper role? Excited about the athletic Hudson, who folks are saying the light has turned on for.

  • LB's and DE's we should be good.   I expect to see a lot of pass rush against Michigan's Oline.
This unit should be young but maybe ahead of the offense at this point.   I expect a great defensive performance from both squads and only a few points given up.

It's always a great day to see Michigan playing in the Big House.  I hope everyone stays healthy and plays well!

Michigan Thursday: Quick Recruiting Blitz

With a big recruiting weekend on tap for the Wolverines.  Lets look at some recruiting news:

  • Columbus (Ohio) St. Francis DeSales 2018 OLB Brian Asamoah calls his visit to Ann Arbor  "phenomenal" last week.

  • Speaking of Ohio LB's:  Dallas Grant who visited A2 a couple of weeks ago was thought to be making another trip for the Spring Game this weekend.  He is now going to OSU and will also visit ND.  He is planning on making a decision in May and this is going to be a battle to the wire between Michigan, ND, and OSU.

  • Michigan is hosting a boat load (7) of 2019 guys today.   Pretty strange for a Thursday but I'm guessing Jimmy wanted to give each some special attention before Saturday.

  • The buzz continues to be UCLA for  NV QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson and his teammate TE Brevin Jordan.   Michigan has its work cut out for them this weekend.   With Jimmy being the QB whisper and using TE's more then any other major program, Michigan still has a punchers chance.  For example, the word on the street is that GA RB Christian Turner was a silent commit to ND before he visited Michigan last weekend.

  • Plan B or C at QB AZ QB Tyler Shough will take an un-official on May 13th.

  • In a non-recruiting note Big Al Borges has been hired as an analyst at Auburn.  He used to be the OC there.

Wolverine Wednesday: Takes a Deeper Look at The 2018 QB Options

Jimmy likes to take a QB every year, which I agree with.  You never know when injuries are going to happen and your playing your 3rd string guy.   Michigan is going to have a small 2018 class with probably around 18-20 guys max.   Michigan wants a QB in this class and has 3 options.

Before we get into the options lets look what Michigan has at QB right now.   Wilton seems to be the starter with O'Korn and Peters challenging for the backup role.   Dylan McCaffrey will arrive this summer and will automatically put on a Red Shirt.   The odd man out seems to be Alex Malzone and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at Central or Western Michigan after this season.

Wilton and John O'Korn will graduate after this year and it seems Peters and McCaffrey will battle for the starting role.   Peters should have the edge being in Jimmy's offense for two years.

So what does that leave for the 2018 class?  Jimmy has 3 offers out and two of three will be in town this weekend.

#1 is Las Vegas QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson who will make another trip to Ann Arbor.   This is by far Jimmy's first choice but losing Jedd to UCLA has hurt the Wolverines chances and will have to make up some ground this weekend.

#2 is Florida's Joe Milton who will also make the trip to Ann Arbor this weekend.   I believe Joe knows he is the back up plan and has recently been getting offers from the local Florida Schools.   With all the high powered Florida head coaches now, it is going to be hard to get him out of the Sunshine State.

#3 is a recent offer to Arizona's Tyler Shough which is a clear sign that neither DTR or Joe Milton is a lock to end up in Ann Arbor.   Tyler grew up a Michigan fan and I think would commit pretty quickly if he got the go ahead from Jimmy.  His other offers include:  Yale, Harvard, Columbia, South Carolina, Indiana, Hawaii, CSU and Washington State (and others).

This is a big weekend on how the 2018 QB recruiting will shake out.   I doubt Michigan will get a public commitment from Dorian or Joe, but will they give the coaches an idea on how they are leaning?

Open Works looks towards a bright future

As one of the only professionally-designed and independently-operated makerspaces in the world, Open Works in Baltimore City’s Greenmount West neighborhood has a lot to be proud of. In its report released earlier this year, Open Works shows just how much they’ve accomplished and what the future holds for this innovative, creative space.

In 2013, the Open Works location at 1400 Greenmount Avenue was purchased by the Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation with help from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and the Maryland Department of Commerce. The vision was to create a space where top-of-the-line tools, technology, and classes are offered in an affordable and accessible environment. One of their biggest accomplishments last year was building a dedicated staff of six full-time employees and 22 part-time employees with living-wage positions. Their diverse team also consists of two AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers.

The makerspace is a site for makers and builders to utilize state-of-the-art equipment to produce their craft, no matter how large or small. It also provides classes to accommodate a wide range of manufacturing skills, including youth, adults, and families. Last year, more than 100 craftsman joined Open Works and almost 2,000 people participated in their mobile classes.

In its 2016 report, Open Works General Manager Will Holman outlined the bold mission the organization has set for 2017.

“We’ve set some audacious goals for 2017,” Holman said. “We are moving aggressively to expand our membership, with a goal of doubling our membership by the end of the first quarter. My New Year’s resolution is simple: growth, on all fronts.”

Michigan Tuesday: Surprised By The Amount of Monday's News

Wow, there was a ton of news coming out of Ann Arbor and related to former Wolverines.  Lets get to news as it was announced yesterday.

  • Michigan Hockey coach Red Berenson retires.  I'm not really a hockey guy but this guy has been a legend in Ann Arbor for many years but has missed the NCAA the last 4 out of 5 years.   Sounds like it was time for a change.

  • Wilson and Wagner are going to test the waters in the NBA Draft.  Neither are going to hire an agent but will be able to go to the combine and work out for NBA teams.   I would expect one or both to be back, but it's hard to say right now.    ESPN projects both guys in the first round but probably later in the first.

  • Drake Johnson is retiring from football and Grant Newsome is probably going to take a redshirt year.   Drake is a local boy from Pioneer that maybe had the worst injury luck any recent Wolverines has had.  He had two ACL injuries and was hit by a fork lift.   This was probably the right decision for his long term health and he will always be a Michigan Man.   Congratulations to Drake on his career!  Now on to Grant, I don't think they have fully closed the door on him making it back this season but it seems like a really long road.  He has a redshirt year available and right now that looks like the best option for him to continue his career.   Michigan is very deep at RB but they are not deep on the offensive line.   This will probably propel a true freshman that is arriving this summer on the two deep.

  • Steve Fisher retired from San Diego State and Brian Dutcher will take over.   We know that Steve won a NC at Michigan and coached the Fab Five.   He impacted both programs and deserves to retire with pride.   Brian Dutcher who has been by Steve's side for many years, finally gets his chance to be a head coach.   Good luck to them both!
-------------------------

Now on to the new commit:  Georgia RB Christian Turner

The day Michigan loses an athlete at RB they pick up another one in the 2018 class.   Christian Turner is a 5'11 187 pound RB from Georgia.   He is rated a 3 star RB across the board to all the services.   ESPN is the highest rated service having him in their top 300 and #19 RB in the nation.

He is visited ND on April 5th, Michigan on April 6th, and MSU on April 7th.   On April 10th he commits to the Wolverines.   His offer list looked more like a 4 star guy:  Louisville, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Syracuse, NC State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

With a class under 20 players this year, I think kids are going to make a quicker decision if they want to be a Wolverine.  Michigan was probably going to just take one RB and Turner grabbed his opportunity.   Another example might be at  QB with Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Joe Milton both visiting this weekend.  If the coaches are not comfortable with either guy committing to Michigan they might take recent offer Tyler Shough who is most likely ready to visit and commit.

This is Michigan 5th commitment to the 2018 class which is estimated to be at a total of 18 spots.

It’s officially spring and tourism’s peak season will soon be underway. What better way is there to kick off the warm weather than planning a stay at one of Maryland’s State Parks?

To encourage visitation, the Maryland Park Service’s reservation system recently transitioned to a new, more user-friendly website — parkreservations.maryland.gov.

“This new intuitive online system will provide a great user experience and easy-to-use options for customers planning their visit,” Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina said.

The system can help prepare trips to Maryland’s vast network of 72 state parks. Customers are able to make reservations for more than 2,500 campsites, 38 cabins, picnic shelters and other lodging and recreational options through the website. Users can also call 888-432-2267 or 866-804-7846 (TTY/TDD) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule reservations.

For park reservations, transaction fees will be reduced to $6.25 per reservation and $4.75 per transaction to cancel or change appointments. Separate charges apply for Assateague State Park.

Michigan Monday: Wonders If That Staircase Has A Weight Limit?

This has been a good weekend if you like staircases.   The #1 golfer in the world, slips on the stairs of one in a rental house in Augusta, hurts his back and has to withdraw from the Masters.   Then Coach D decides to have a cook out at his house!

I love this, it only helps with team morale and deepens the coach player relationship!   I'm betting that grocery bill was a bit expensive!  :-)

  • Gary was the #1 draft pick in the Spring Game draft

  • 2019 DT Jacob Lacey will visit Michigan this week

  • Commit Aidan Hutchinson was at The Opening camp in Cleveland this weekend.

  • Columbus LB Brian Asamoah enjoyed his visit to Ann Arbor this weekend, he is expected to announce a week from Friday on the 21st.  Lets see if he keeps that timeline.

  • After his visit a week ago, Michigan has been gaining a number of crystal ball predictions for 3 star GA RB Christian Turner.

  • Former Wolverine Brian Cole is now with Mississippi State after originally transferring to East Mississippi C.C.  Looks like Brian is going to stick at Safety for the Bulldogs.  His position coach is former Michigan DC Ron English.

Apply now for a Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award

Guest feature: Laura Armstrong is the Sustainability Program Director at the Maryland Department of the Environment. Follow along with MDE on Facebook and Twitter.

Has your organization reduced its environmental impacts and saved money through energy and water conservation, waste minimization and other environmental best practices? Share your success and gain recognition by applying for a Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award. Applications are due April 26, 2017.

What is the Maryland Green Registry?
The Maryland Green Registry is a free membership program that promotes and recognizes sustainable practices at organizations of all types and sizes across the state. It is not a certification program, but rather a public forum to share environmental best practices that yield both environmental benefits and cost savings. Last year, members reported saving over $104 million through these practices. Businesses and organizations are welcome to join anytime throughout the year.

What are the Maryland Green Leadership Awards?
The annual Leadership Awards are presented to organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable practices, measurable results, and continual improvement. Past winners have typically accomplished this by setting annual goals, tracking results, maintaining active green teams and repeating this process year after year.

Do I have to be a certain type or size of business?
No, not at all! The winning combination of active green teams, annual goals, measurement, and commitment to continual improvement applies equally across all organization types and sizes. Past winners have included colleges, schools, hospitals, and businesses of all sizes.

How do I apply?
Applicants must be a member of the Registry, but it’s free, easy to join, and there’s plenty of time to become a member before the April 26 awards deadline. Complete the member profile form by sharing at least five environmental practices and one measurable result.

Applying for the award is even easier. You’ve already shared information through your profile so the application asks for brief responses to two questions that will help draw the attention of the judging panel to your key practices, results and examples of commitment to continuing improvement. CLICK HERE.

How are winners recognized?
Winners will be recognized by Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles at the 8th Annual Maryland Green Registry Membership and Awards event on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Governor Calvert Inn in Annapolis.

This networking event is cosponsored by the Maryland Department of Environment and the Maryland Department of Commerce and will be held in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council Maryland and Annapolis Green Drinks. Registration information will be available soon.

However, many leadership experts say that is not true. While leadership may come more naturally to extroverts, introverted individuals can still leverage their natural personality traits and get the job done well. Here are three tips to help introverts become better leaders.

Breaking News: Michigan Lands a 4 Star Corner

Michigan landed a 4 star corner this afternoon when Myles "Spider" Sims out of Georgia committed to the Wolverines.   Scout and Rivals are the highest on Myles,  Rivals has him as the 51st player in the country and Scout has him as the 80th.

Myles visited Ann Arbor in early March with his parents and that trip seemed to seal the deal.  Myles offer list included the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, USC and many more.

Myles was born in the Great Lakes State and moved down south when he was 6 years old.   He is 6'3 and 175 pounds.

Sims joins Ekiyor, Reese and Hutchinson as members of the 2018 recruiting class.

This is a big get for the Wolverines and reportedly their top prospect at corner.

DWE expands manufacturing operations in Harford County

DWE, also known as D. Wheatley Enterprises, Inc., is relocating its headquarters and manufacturing operations to Belcamp in Harford County and adding 40 new jobs over the next four years. A growing engineering and manufacturing company, DWE will invest more than $2.3 million into a new 45,000 square-foot building on Brass Mill Road. The company currently has 50 full-time employees.

“We are grateful to have continued growth and extremely pleased that our expansion is able to provide additional employment opportunities in Harford County,” said Dave Wheatley, CEO and president of DWE.

Since its founding in 1990, DWE engineers have supported the development of life-support products for the biotech, defense, and aerospace industries. The company makes a variety of items ranging from pea-sized components to 400 foot-long vehicle harness assemblies. Most of its early defense work has been in the innovation of engineered polymers for the nuclear, biological, and chemical protection and detection field. DWE’s new operations include critical technology injection molding as well as self-contained breathing apparatus breathing systems.

“Since January 2015, Maryland has added more than 100,000 new jobs thanks to companies like DWE that are choosing to expand in our state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “The fact that DWE plans to nearly double their number of employers over the next four years shows that we are making tremendous progress in expanding economic opportunity in all regions of Maryland.”

“We are delighted to welcome another business expansion and new jobs coming to Harford County,” said County Executive Barry Glassman. “Through our technical workforce training program, we are also pleased to help employees advance their skills in the workplace.”

Michigan Friday: Wilson and Wagner Leaning Towards NBA

DJ Wilson and Mortiz Wagner struggled two seasons ago and the NBA looked like a pipe dream.  After a strong 2016-17 season, a Big Ten Tournament Championship and a nice run in the NCAA Tournament both of these young big men are considering turning pro.

Zak Irvin has signed with an agent and probably is an NBA Free Agent or will consider playing overseas.   Both Wilson and Wagner are thinking about not signing with an agent and seeing what their status might be in the NBA.   I'm not an NBA talent evaluator but I think both guys could use another year in college.

  • Khaleke Hudson is making noise at Viper this spring.   It sounds like he is leader in the clubhouse with Josh Metellus moving to Safety.   As we know, Josh played Viper during the Orange Bowl after Peppers pulled his hamstring.  "It means a lot that Coach Brown would trust me enough to be the VIPER," Hudson said. "Me and Josh have been working hard. Everyone's been working hard, but it means a lot to be there. I feel like it's a place that's a good fit for me. I'll be able to play in the box and play outside -- it's also a great fit for Josh, because he can play in the box, play outside. So we're both just working just in case either one of us has to be that position, it won't be a surprise."

  • Michigan Baseball has won 7 straight games

  • 2018 3 Star GA RB Christian Turner visited Ann Arbor yesterday.

Michigan Thursday: Is Late In The Day

Sorry for the late and short post today.

Mgoblog former message board insider and now Touch the Banner contributor has some new practice insights.   Here are the ones that I found interesting:

- Banged up list: DPJ, JaRaymond Hall and Nolan Uilzio.  Grant is still on crutches.
- All the RB's have looked impressive.
-He called out that Gentry is really starting to play well at TE.   He and Bunting could make a nice 1 - 2 punch!

  • 2017 G Shakwon Barrett is going to visit this weekend.  He is a 6'3 point guard out of Canada.  Michigan has one spot left, which could go to a 5 star Center, a 5th year transfer, or this guy?

  • Mike Onwenu is down 15 pounds to 360!

  • Michigan's latest PWO Matt Brown was also the AP and USA Today's Ohio defensive player of the year.  What a great pick up!

Wolverine Wednesday: New 2018 QB Offer and Some Practice Buzz

Michigan has been recruiting two QB in the next class.   The top prospect is Vegas QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson who will be in town for the Spring Game but many believe he is trending towards Jedd Fisch and UCLA.

The other guy is Florida QB Joe Milton who is also expected in town for the Spring game.   Joe is getting a ton of interest lately from Florida schools and could stay close to home.

That is only a few eggs in the basket.   So Michigan offered yesterday Chandler, Arizona QB Tyler Shough.   He grew up a Michigan fan and Jimmy called to offer him personally.  Tyler is 6'5 200 pounds and rated a 3 star Pro-Style QB from Rivals.

The guys over at Touch the Banner have some practice buzz to share, here are some of the highlights:
  • Wilton continues to be the clear #1 QB.  Brandon Peters is battling O'Korn for #2.
  • Kareem Walker has been getting some good buzz, Chris Evans is #1 with the rest of the guys fighting for carries.
  • Kekoa Crawford has impressed at WR
  • The offensive line continues to be a work in progress Bredeson, Cole, and Onwenu seem to be firm starters for sure.   Cole could be at center or left tackle.
  • DL looks like Gary and Winovich at DE, Mone at Nose, and Hurst at 3-tech.
  • Hill and Long are the starters at CB

-Michigan Basketball finished 17th in the Coaches poll

-OH LB Dallas Gant who just visited Ann Arbor, will make a decision on his birthday on May 16th.  He released his top 5 of Michigan, ND, OSU, Penn State, and MSU.  Dallas lives in Toledo, so he will come back to Ann Arbor for the Spring Game.

Michigan Tuesday: The Big Ten Bumps It's Head and Michigan Adds a Max Preps All American

The Big 10 is trying too hard to innovate.   Yes, they were the leader in the clubhouse with BTN but since then they are treading water and taking a deaf ear to other issues knocking at its door.

The Big 10 stupidly announced many months ago that they were going to put Big Ten games on Friday night.  Why?  They were looking for a football window where fans might be interested in Illinois vs. Purdue.   Sorry Big Ten that just isn't going to happen.   Michigan and Penn State came out against it immediately and now the Big Ten is going to scale it way back.

Friday night doesn't make sense for a number of reasons. The Big 10 doesn't need to compete with high school football.  It also kills a recruiting weekend.  Kids can't come in for a game as they are playing on Friday.  Not to mention the fans, who many travel to games and won't be able to tailgate, etc.

Leave Friday night football to the MAC or West Coast teams.  To the Big 10's credit, at least they backtrack a bad idea quickly (# Leaders and Legends).

  • Walk-on Alert! Harbaugh doesn't sleep and that comes through when he adds a 2017 PWO in April.   Michigan added FB/LB Matt Brown from Solon, Ohio.  Matt was headed to Quinnipiac to play college lacrosse and on Monday he changed his mind to become a Wolverine.   Matt is 6'0 and 220 pounds and was named the 2016 OHSAA defensive player of the year.   He was also named to the Max Preps All American Team that included a number of 4 and 5 star guys (DPJ and Aubrey Solomon was on it!).   This guy sounds like a complete steal and I expect to see him at FB and on special teams on Saturdays in the future.

  • How bad was the National Championship game last night?  Too many fouls and very poor shooting!

  • I wonder if Brian Kelly has a clock in his office at ND? His time at ND is ticking away.   He just threw his former player and QB under the bus right before the NFL Draft.   Hey kids, come to ND where you head coach will always support you!  (He does say some good things about Kiser but as he knows, its the needing to grow on and off the field quote that is going to make headlines)

Ulman Cancer Fund begins free housing renovation

In honor of Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week, which runs from April 4 to April 10, we have teamed up with the Ulman Cancer Fund to spread the word about UCF house. Learn more at ulmanfund.org/theucfhouse.

Every person on the planet has been affected by cancer in some way. No matter your background, cancer has most likely touched your life either through your own experience or a loved one’s.

In response to the devastating effects of this disease, many have donated to research, ran marathons, and cut their hair in an attempt to defeat this illness and support those who are suffering from it. All too often, the simple need of housing, to ensure accessibility to today’s cutting-edge cancer treatments, is overlooked. This problem is magnified for young adults, those between the ages of 18 and 39 years old, who usually don’t qualify for the free or affordable housing programs that are typically dedicated to children and elderly patients.

In a collaboration of philanthropy and development, the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults has responded to this need by beginning the transformation of six rowhomes on the 2100 block of E. Madison Street near Baltimore’s many elite hospitals. The UCF House will be a home 365 days a year for 15 to 39 patients and their families undergoing treatments in Baltimore City. Brock Yetso, executive director of the UCF, says this type of housing is the first of its kind in Maryland and possibly the country.

“This is a safe environment where cancer patients undergoing treatment can be amongst their peers and find support,” Yetso said. “More young adults need treatment that requires extended stays near the hospital, and many options are incredibly costly. Our approach is to create a program that is replicable in other cities and can act as a model for others.”

The UCF House will be a full-service, home away from home, with access to a gym, food preparation, and common areas. Rooms are outfitted so that patients can stay with their loved ones during this stressful time. After breaking ground in January with the help of partners like East Baltimore Development, Inc., the UCF expects to have the renovation completed by the end of this year. At a building cost of $1.25 million, the UCF House will transform a block of almost entirely vacant properties into a top-of-the-line, LEED certified home for any young adult who is receiving cancer treatment in Baltimore City, no matter where they are from.

“This is an investment in Baltimore City,” Yetso said. “Through the help of our state partners like Senator Nathaniel McFadden, Delegate Cory McCray, and City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young we were able to receive a bond bill and bring money back to this city as well as serve a population in need.”

At $2.5 million in funds, the UCF is still just shy of their goal of $3 million to build and run the UCF house for the first three years. To learn more about the UCF and support the project, visit ulmanfund.org/theucfhouse.
