For the past two years, the quiet rural towns of Mountain Maryland have heard the sound of progress – or construction equipment – clanging and breaking ground along the streets near National Highway.
Since 2014, seven new businesses have been added to the LaVale cityscape. These businesses have brought their products and services to the area, allowing residents to now shop without even leaving town. The stores also bring excitement to the surrounding community and provide hope for future development.
To grab a bite to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings or Cracker Barrel used to be an excursion for Allegany residents, who traveled for miles to satisfy their cravings. Now, these destinations are conveniently located right down the road.
Allegany County has plenty of options for shopping trips, too. Winchester Court is a modern shopping center, similar to the larger towns to the east and west (we’re looking at you, Hagerstown and Morgantown). Aspen Dental, Mattress Warehouse, PetSmart, and Aldi have brought big-city names to small-town consumers. U.S. Cellular, a longstanding staple of communications in the area, is enjoying a fresh façade in the marketplace.
Some may think that the businesses Allegany County has added to its resumé are old news – but for an area that has been long starved of economic improvement, that old news may just be the best news.
