And, they’re off! The 141st Preakness Stakes is upon us and I could not be more excited about showing off Maryland’s outstanding quality of life and our thriving horse industry. The Preakness is not only a great opportunity to showcase Maryland’s assets to a global audience, but also a significant economic generator for the state and city of Baltimore.
A study done by Maryland Commerce shows that Preakness 2015 drew a record crowd of 131,680 to watch American Pharoah race to victory at Pimlico Race Course. Visitors to Preakness and Preakness Celebration, which is a series of events leading up to the big race, generated $10.6 million in spending.
When you factor in both direct and indirect economic impacts, total Preakness-related expenditures swelled to $33.6 million. The nearly week-long celebration also supported 482 full-time equivalent jobs, $12.9 million in salaries and $2.2 million in state and local taxes.
I’m betting it’s going to be another great Preakness Race and I can’t wait to have the spotlight once again shine on Maryland!
