  • Congratulations to Eastern Michigan from on 1 win last season to the Bahamas for a Bowl Game.   There was talk about shutting that program down and now they are headed to Atlantis!  Congratulations!

  • I really don't want to talk about the playoffs for the Wolverines.  I think it's strange that Michigan has beaten both teams in the Big Ten Championship game and 1 team in the PAC 12 championship game.   If you want suspense, you better hope for Colorado to beat Washington on Friday night.   Most believe the Wolverines are headed to the Orange Bowl in South Florida.

  • Oregon fired Mark Helfrich last night, which probably means that Brady Hoke is out of a job.

  • FL OG TJ Slaton says he had to cancel his Michigan official due to his SAT score.

  • Michigan Safety commit J'Marick Woods will announce his final decision between Michigan, Arkansas, and Mississippi State on Friday morning.   Discuss among yourself why a commit needs to announce his final decision if he is already committed?

  • Since we haven't had any walk-on news lately, here is a gem for you.  Jess Speight, a 6'4", 280-pound OG will walk-on to Michigan next year.   If his last name is familiar, you are correct, he is Wilton's brother.   I wasn't aware the Speight family has a legacy connection to NC State.  Bobby Speight the boys grandfather was an All American basketball player for the Wolfpack.

  • Michigan Basketball plays VT tonight at 7:00 in the BIG 10/ACC Challenge at Crisler ESPN 2

The Big Ten's Glass House

You know you are getting to big and powerful when you can't look at your organization and see faults, issues or problems.   There is no perfect organization.   Apple has issues, Microsoft has problems, Google is not always great.  The best organizations look at everything and evaluates where they can get better.     Leadership is not guiding the boat in calm weather, its captaining the ship in a hurricane.

Jim Delany thinks the water is calm in the Big Ten.   It's not, it's choppy as hell and he can't see it or will even take questions on it.

This happened yesterday, which we knew was coming:

Big 10 reprimands Jim Harbaugh for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy, fines school $10,000.

Big Ten take some god damn responsibility for putting that officiating crew on the field!   Mike Pereira the officiating expert for Fox Sports, said the Big 10 reviewed the game and only found one mistake.

I'm betting there was probably 20 mistakes made, I will give you two calls that were clear mistakes:  Darboh gets tackled in the first quarter on a pass route which is a clear PI call and Grant Perry gets hooked and no PI call in overtime.    The Hill PI call could have gone either way, the argument is the ball was not catchable.    The spot is also a 50/50 call.

There is enough smoke to make "the game was fixed" fire and as of today Jim Delany has his head in the sand.

If I was Michigan's AD and/or President, I would have a serious talk with Jim Delany on the officials they put on the field.   It's time Michigan threw it's weight around and got some damn answers.   I'm tired of decisions of having to play MSU in East Lansing two years in a row and putting Ohio State fans on the field to officiate a Ohio State - Michigan game. The Big Ten holds 100% responsibility for that decision which breaks the Big Ten Sportsmanship policy in my mind.

Jim Delany if you don't address the mistake in the putting Ohio officials on the field in Ohio Stadium, you aren't a leader and completely tone deaf.

Only in the Big Ten could you have the 3rd and 4th best teams playing for a Championship this Saturday.

Hopefully, that is the last post on the damn officiating in the OSU game.

  • Michigan WR target Tarik Black is planning to decide in December in the next 2-3 weeks.  His original plan was to announce at the Army All American game.

  • There have been some buzz that Michigan might have cooled a bit on Nike Opening star IA WR Oliver Martin as they feel confident about 3 other WR's.   I hope that's not the case, I like Martin a lot and think he is going to be a very good WR at the next level.   The thinking is he might now sign with ND.

  • Did you know that Brian Kelly, Rich Rod and Mark Dantonio combined for 10 wins this year? Strange year.

Bringing up the next generation of entrepreneurs

Nine-year-old Jacob Leggette had a dream…and a problem. After learning to 3D print in Digital Harbor Foundation’s two-week Mini Makers course, he was inspired to create even more items but didn’t have a 3D printer of his own. He decided to write to manufacturers of 3D printers and ask for a donation. His hook? He’d provide feedback on how easy or difficult it was for a youngster to operate the printer. His pitch was successful.

With the help of DHF’s after-school Mini Maker courses, with the support of his parents, and with his own ingenuity and drive, Jacob used his new 3D printer to prototype an entire line of toys and miniatures. He presented his projects – including a model of the White House – at the White House Science Fair in April. When President Barack Obama stopped by to visit with Jacob and to try out a bubble wand he’d created, Jacob pitched the idea of a Kid Science Advisor in the White House. His idea came to fruition when the president created the White House Kids Science Advisory, which held its first meeting in October.

Jacob is just one of hundreds of Baltimore-area boys and girls whom Digital Harbor Foundation is inspiring to do great things. Programs, field trips, and events are designed to trigger students’ interest in science and technology. Year-round Mini-Maker programs are geared toward students in grades three through five. Boys and girls in grades six through 10 may participate in 14-week Maker Foundations – a tech discovery program – and advanced courses are available for those students who complete Maker Foundations. All programs and services are offered on a “pay-what-you-can” basis.

This year alone, more than 700 youngsters from 90 different schools participated in DHF’s after-school programs, where they discovered the latest technologies – things like coding, web design, 3D printing, digital manufacturing, and game design – and learned how to become entrepreneurs. DHF’s programs have spurred an array of ideas and projects. One such project, 3D-printed reef balls that were created by students competing in Digital Harbor Foundation’s FabSLAM competition in April, is helping to increase the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay.

Digital Harbor Foundation is just one of the many Maryland nonprofit organizations taking part in Giving Tuesday, November 29. To support DHF – or to explore other options to contribute or volunteer – visit Giving Tuesday. A donation of time or money just might inspire another student and send him or her to the White House!

The Huge Mistake The Big Ten Made In The Ohio State Game

Do you know who Dick Honig is?   I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't.  He is a long time Ann Arbor resident, U of M grad and a former All Big Ten Wolverine shortstop on the Michigan Baseball team in 1962.   After his playing days, he was also an assistant basketball and baseball coach for the Wolverines.

That isn't the real story.  Dick was a basketball official and a football official for 20 years in the Big Ten and for 9 years in the MAC.   He also has owns an store for officials gear called Dick's Whistle Stop in Ann Arbor.

Wouldn't it be great for Dick to travel a few minutes from his home and officiate a Michigan game in the Big House?  It would, but you can't have an official that lives in Ann Arbor and a former Michigan grad officiate a Michigan Football game.  It's a clear conflict of interest, even if the official is trust worthy and great at what he does.  At the end of the day, officials are humans beings that will always lean one way or another.

The Big Ten made a huge error in the Michigan game and it wasn't the missed calls.  It was the officials they put on the field.
  • Kevin Schwarzel the back judge for the game, lives in Ohio and is on record as an Ohio State fan.   In 2006,  he was not allowed to officiate the OSU - Michigan game for conflict of interest.   He was the back judge on Saturday.

  • Bobby Sagers, the side judge for the game.   Bobby is also from Ohio and was recently inducted in the OHSAA hall of fame in Columbus.

  • Daniel Capron the lead official was fired by the Big Ten in 2002 for being a poor official.

Schwarzel and Sagers should never been on the field for the biggest game of the year.  That is a clear conflict of interest.  I don't know these men and I don't know their integrity, but that doesn't matter as they are humans and could not make a neutral decision.   I'm less concerned with Capron, he might have become a better official in the last 14 years.

This is the huge mistake by the Big Ten and puts the entire game under a light the Big Ten will run away from as fast as they can.   The Big Ten's worst fear is that a game would be fixed by officials.   A conference will always back their officials even when mistakes are made on the field.

All of our arguments are "matter of opinion" on pass interference or the 4th down spot.   The huge issue is there were "Ohio" officials on the field and their integrity and rooting interest has to be questioned, because they never should have been put in that position by the Big Ten.    It really can't be questioned that the Big Ten made a huge mistake and could have (or did) affect the outcome.   Jimmy has every right to be mad at the officials and the Big Ten for this clear conflict of interest.

  • Reports are that Peppers mother is starting to interview agents.   This is not a surprise.

  • On the 4th down spot and the reason the booth got it wrong was the location of the Ohio State's TE butt.   Barrett gets hit low by Hill, but he then runs in the butt of the #88 OSU TE and falls back two yards.  If his butt is past the line, first down.  His butt was clearly short of the yard to gain.  There was no way the booth was going to overturn that call.   There was also a good camera angle from behind that showed he was short that the booth clearly ignored.

Gift Wrapped

Michigan was the better team today and still lost.  Why did they lose?  Because they gift wrapped all of Ohio State's points.

The first interception was a blown blocking assignment by senior RB DeVeon Smith.   Free 7 points.

The second interception was Wilton making a bad read and then Jimmy losing his mind.   Free 7 points.     Total of 14 free points, delivered right to Ohio State's living room by Michigan's offense.

The fumble on the goal line was kindly returned by a stupid fake punt.   That was an even exchange.

Senior Safety Hill, also gift wrapped the final field goal, by taking a 15 yard interference call on a ball that was way over thrown.

OSU's offense scored 6 points on the Michigan defense in regulation.  Michigan's offense delivered the rest.

  • The spot on Barett's 4th down  was very questionable.   The ball is in his right hand and he was hit sideways.   I believe he was short, but the officials don't have the balls to over turn that call.  The Big Ten officials again were too involved in the game.  The calls favored the Buckeyes most of the day.    I don't understand why the Big Ten can't get competent officials in the biggest game of the year.

  • The Michigan defense was gassed and I knew overtime was not going to be good for the Wolverines.
Wilton was great and terrible on the day.   I liked Michigan's aggressive strategy but I really wanted to see if we could have run the ball a bit more effectively in the second half.

The bottom line is you can't give OSU 14 points when they can't move the ball on Michigan's defense all day.   JT Barrett is a full back that throws some times and the Michigan defense for the most part did their job.   OSU is going to get rolled in the playoffs, they are just not dynamic enough on offense.

What a waste of an effort, game plan and season.    A gift wrapped victory for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State Preview

Image result for broken buckeye nut

Time: 12:00
Location: Ohio Stadium
TV: ABC
Weather: Cloudy and 42
Line: OSU -6.5

I don't care who is ranked what, I don't care who leads in the series, I don't care who has won the last few games.   This game has always been about two things:  heart and talent.

Michigan has been lacking in the talent department ever since Lloyd Carr retired.   RR didn't understand the rivalry and Hoke was over his skies.  Michigan now has talent and a head coach that can go head to head with Meyer.

I don't care what Ohio State looked like last week, they will be a completely different team Saturday at noon.

Tale of the Tape

Michigan D vs. OSU RB's =  Michigan D
Michigan O vs. A Stacked Box = Ohio State
JT Barrett vs. 3rd and 4 = JT
Special Teams = Michigan
Michigan Passing Attack vs. OSU D = ?

This game comes down to one thing to me.   Can Michigan move the ball through the air against OSU's defense?  It's a noon start and the weather shouldn't be a factor.   If Wilton plays, can he stay healthy enough to hit the Michigan WR's down field?   Can Darboh and Chesson get separation?

Both teams will try to stack the box to stop the run.   I'm betting Peppers will be spying on Barrett all game.   The 3rd down and 4 scrambles worry me for keeping drives alive.    Peppers is going to have to tackle JT early and often for Michigan to stop the Buckeyes on defense.

Sing, Indy here we come if........................
  • Wilton plays and has 250 yards+ throwing
  • Michigan is getting first downs on the ground
  • Michigan is not letting JT scramble for first downs
  • Michigan is stopping the OSU running game.
  • Peppers is the best player on the field
Yell, this sh*t is all too familiar if.....................
  • Michigan offense looks like it has been the last two weeks and can't move the ball
  • OSU is getting to the edge on Michigan's defense
  • OSU is winning the game on the ground
  • It doesn't matter who is playing QB for Michigan

I don't like how Michigan has played on offense the last two weeks at all.   There are questions at QB and the lack of scoring is a huge concern coming into Columbus.   Michigan finally can match the talent and even has more experience this year then the Buckeyes.   Will the most important position on the field trump that talent and experience?

That is the question of the day.   MSU beat OSU last year with their second and third string QB's.   That was in terrible weather, when JT seems to struggle.  I like this game much more if Wilton is 100% healthy and they have put up 40 points the last two weeks.  From what my eyes saw last week, I'm not sure John O'Korn can beat the Buckeyes.  I do like the noon start for the Wolverines, this team seems to play better earlier then later in the day.

The bottom line is Michigan struggled on the road against Iowa, Wilton had a terrible day and got hurt.  With the way the offense has been trending, with OSU having a similar defense, and being at home, the Buckeyes are the clear favorite.   It's time to find out if Harbaugh is a great coach or a freaking wizard.

Wolverine Wednesday: Wilton's Status?

Will he or Won't he play is the big question for Wilton on Saturday.   Darboh said he practiced on Tuesday and looked good.   Other insiders are expecting Wilton to play on Saturday if everything continues to progress this week in practice.   That has to be a good sign, but I expect we might see Wilton, O'Korn, and Peppers taking snaps on Saturday as Wilton is one good hit away from being knocked out of the game.

I believe Michigan will need a balanced offense of throws down field and a good running game to beat the Buckeyes on Saturday.  Since John seemed to struggle throwing last Saturday,  I believe we need Wilton to provide that downfield threat.

  • Michigan is trending strong in the recruitment of 4 Star CB Ambry Thomas from Detroit King.   Michigan would love to get DP-J and Ambry to join the 2017 class.

  • Michigan Basketball is on the road this afternoon against South Carolina.   The game tips at 5:00 on ESPNU.   A nice afternoon pre-Thanksgiving game!

Michigan Tuesday: A Free Playoff Game

30978029212_f1cf9dd9ac_z
Bryan Fuller - Mgoblog

I just love the above photo.   For those that watched the game on TV, wasn't it strange to watch a game without snow right after the Michigan game?   The clear HD hurt your eyes after watching the snow of the 4th quarter.

The College Football Playoff System gets a freebie on Saturday as #2 Ohio State host #3 Michigan.    Which is a huge help to the committee.   What they will have to decide is what to do with OSU if they beat the Wolverines, as OSU is probably not headed to the Big Ten Championship game.   Let's hope the Wolverines make the decision easy for the committee and beat the Buckeyes this weekend.   If it does end up a Penn State vs. Wisconsin Big Ten Championship, I think Wisconsin will win.   I would have bet a million dollars that Penn State had zero shot of making the CFP after that performance in Ann Arbor.  This is a crazy sport.

The QB Question

Michigan can't seem to have a healthy QB for the biggest rivalry in college football.  Brian at Mgoblog jogged my memory on how the Wolverines have had QB issues in this game.   Chad Henne couldn't throw his senior year against OSU, Denard was a RB his senior year because he couldn't throw and Devin Gardner broke his foot one year during the game.   Last year Jake Rudock was healthy but as a rent a QB, clearly wasn't invested like other program QB's would be.

So now Michigan has two choices:

1) Maybe Wilton is healthy enough to play on Saturday but he is clearly injured and coming off his worst performance as a starter.

2) John O'Korn who has played one full game as a Wolverine starter and passed for 59 yards.    That type of performance won't beat the Buckeyes in the C-Bus.

OSU and JT Barrett have similar concerns.  MSU beat OSU last year with two back up QB's in C-Bus.  JT didn't look very sharp last week in the cold in East Lansing.   JT seems to struggle in cold weather and tends not to be very accurate with his throws.   Both Michigan QB's also have similar issues, Wilton struggled in the cold at Iowa and O'Korn struggled in the wind and cold on Saturday.   O'Korn is from Florida and played most of his starter snaps in Houston.   I doubt he has played in too many snow games before this past Saturday.

Saturday is supposed to be chilly but no Snow or Rain really in the forecast.

  • Michigan Basketball is now ranked #25

Harford County Fitness Startup Seeks Partners, Investors To Support Growth

A Harford County fitness startup focused on flexible gym memberships is launching new programs and seeking investors as it looks to expand throughout the mid-Atlantic.

Real Flexi was founded in 2014 by Lisa Quigley. Instead of buying a full-access membership including entry to all classes to a certain gym or paying drop-in rates for classes at a fitness boutique — which can cost about $20 per class — Real Flexi members pay $89 per month to gain access to hundreds of classes at partnering fitness establishments. The company is currently working with about 80 studios and gyms throughout Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Local partners include BeMore Bootcamp and Federal Hill Fitness.

Towson Edtech Startup Raising Funds, Plans Hires In 2017

A Towson education technology startup launched it's first web-based application this week and is raising funds with the hopes of growing in Maryland.

Beth Lawrence and Deena Seifert, who are behind Communication APPtitude, had been working as speech pathologists for over 20 years when they teamed on an education app idea. They wanted to create a way to help students with vocabulary comprehension, specifically of nuanced words like "prominent' or 'prudent," which are "difficult to explain or learn using only language," Lawrence said.

5 Critical Questions For Entrepreneurs

Small business owners have to deal with two universes every day: the marketplace, and what I call the diaper-changing stuff (DCS).

The marketplace is the fun place, where you buy and sell stuff. Playing in the backyard of this universe is why you became a business owner in the first place.

And the good news is, most entrepreneurs are pretty good at the rules and expectations of this universe before they start their business.

The DCS represents mostly backroom, operating tasks (read: not much fun) that have to be done in order to present the business and its products to the marketplace — accounting, cash management, banking, capital allocation, payroll, regulations — you get the picture.

As tech industry grapples with diversity questions, Microsoft targets executives’ pay

Microsoft Corp. has announced it will tie executive bonuses to workforce diversity goals as the tech industry continues to struggle to increase the number of women and minorities in the workplace.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) instituted the new bonus rule after the company witnessed a decline in its number of female employees for the second consecutive year, down to 25.8 percent from 26.8 percent, according to Bloomberg. The decline is due in large part to the company divesting itself of its Nokia handset factory, which employed a significant number of women, the report added.

How Baltimore County’s Boost Loan Fund Can Help Your Maryland Business

It’s an exciting time to be a small business in Baltimore County.

Biotech and edtech startups are thriving locally, thanks in part to Baltimore County’s Boost Loan Fund program, which launched in October 2014.

The Boost Loan Fund is a loan program funded by revenue generated from Maryland’s video lottery terminals. The recipients — small, minority, woman and veteran-owned businesses throughout the state — receive loans of $50,000 to $250,000, which are then used for start-up and gap funding, improvements and acquisitions, and for working capital. Baltimore Tea Startup Makes Entrepreneur 360 List

James Fayal was the only employee of Zest Tea for two years. Now the company that makes a naturally caffeinated tea drink is up to four workers and has plans to move into new sales areas.

The growth merited recognition from the Entrepreneur 360 list from Entrepreneur Magazine. The national list looks at companies — those that apply, that is — in four areas: innovation, growth, leadership and impact.

Fayal founded the company in Philly and received a $45,000 investment from Venture for America, which brought him to Philly as a fellow. Last year, he moved to Baltimore, and based the company out of the Carroll-Camden neighborhood.

The University of Maryland alum talks of Baltimore’s potential for consumer products, given the large amount of commercial space waiting to be filled, its port and the influence of another certain Terp. Michigan Monday: Tightens It's Chin Strap

This is the week that players on both teams have to worry about being too hyped to play.    I would imagine practice is going to be lively for both teams as they enjoy Thanksgiving dinner as a team on Thursday before the world stops on Saturday at noon.

Both teams are sort of limping into this big game, both got upset on the road this year and both had head scratching wins over the weekend.   OSU beat a 1 win Big Ten team by 1 point and Michigan did snow angles to a 10 point victory over a 5-5 Indiana team.

I hope Jimmy practices outside most of the week, because I have not liked how the Wolverines have played in cold weather at Iowa and the wind and snow on Saturday.   The early forecast for The Game is low 40's and a small chance of rain.

  • Jimmy answered all the questions about Wilton's availability for next weekend, as he is day to day.

  • Brooklyn (NY) Poly Prep 2017 OL Isaiah Wilson visited for the IU game this past weekend.

  • If it was 99% that Charlie Strong was going to be fired at Texas, it became 100% after the loss to Kansas.  If you remember, Texas did take a couple of shots at Jimmy when he was in the NFL.  He isn't going anywhere and the leader in the clubhouse for that job is former OSU assistant Tom Herman.   I wouldn't be surprised if Charlie ended up at Purdue.

A look ahead to the rival in Columbus, Ohio:

Ranked: #2 by the CFP
Best Win: Oklahoma
Worst Loss: Penn State

They are 8th in the country in running the ball with an average of 263 yards per game.
They are 68th in passing at 230 yards per game.

They are 5th is scoring offense at 43 points per.
Defense is 3rd in points against at 13 points per.

ESPN GameDay will in in C-Bus and will start the show at 7:00AM.   Love that there is a former Wolverine and a former Buckeye on the GameDay crew.

I have watched some OSU games this year and this team goes as it QB goes.   JT pretty much controls the entire game.   The OSU offense will dink and dunk in the passing game, run you death with Mike Weber and JT Barrett and then hit you will a long pass for a TD.

The Buckeyes are not as talented as they were last year but they have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.    Michigan's #1 goal on defense is to stop JT Barrett as he prefers to run much more then throw.   It would be great if Michigan could fly Denard up for the week of practice, so he could simulate Barrett.   Maybe he just stayed in the Detroit area after Jacksonville's loss on Sunday?

Indiana Post Game

David Guralnick, Detroit News

Senior day started like Michigan was playing against Iowa again.   Michigan continued to be in a daze for the first half of the game.   John O"Korn was not ready for the weather or the IU pass rush and Michigan struggled to move the ball.  For the first time this year, Michigan headed to the locker room down 4 points at the half.

The Maize Daze continued into the second half and it looked like Michigan was heading for an upset.   Then John O'Korn scrambled out of the pocked for a 30 yard run on 3rd down.   Michigan had life, the Big House had life and most importantly Michigan's offense found some confidence.   Then the hard working senior DeVeon Smith took over.   He followed O'Korn's scramble with two long TD runs to knock out IU.

The game was ugly, cold, windy and snowy.   In those games, you get a win no matter how you do it and head to next week.   With that said, there was plenty of things Michigan must improve on to beat the Buckeyes next weekend.  Let's head to the Cheers and Jeers to see some of those things.

Cheers
  • Peppers had some great stops on the edge of IU's offense and his fielding of the low line drive punts, saved Michigan field position.
  • DeVeon Smith had his best day in a Michigan uniform with 158 yards on the ground and two game saving TD's.  He was Michigan's offense on the day.
  • Michigan Special Teams, blocked two punts, made two fields goals, Kenny had good punts and his kick offs were sailing into the stands.   That was a great performance!
  • Darboh had one catch for late first down that was a big first down.
  • Crawford took out two defenders with one block on Smith's last TD run
  • O'Korn's scramble was the play that changed the momentum

Jeers

  • John O'Korn passed for 59 yards on the day.  It could of been the wind or the snow or IU's defense.   Either way, he can't do that next Saturday and think the Wolverines have a chance of winning.    I think Michigan needs Wilton back next week to beat the Buckeyes.
  • Offensive line was good and bad on Saturday, in a game we knew Michigan needed to run, they did create holes late,  they didn't however give O'Korn any time when Michigan did attempt to pass.
  • Where has our WR's and TE's gone?  Darboh had one catch, Chesson 2, Butt 0.   We have to get these guys more involved in the offense.
  • The weather was nasty and played a big role in keeping the scoring down
  • The penalties have to stop, Michigan had 5 for 40 yards
  • Vanilla Ice cream, thought Michigan's offense was too vanilla on Saturday.

Well it's now Ohio State week and both teams have plenty to work on.   Don't expect to see the team that had a one point win in East Lansing on Saturday.  Michigan better not be the team in C-Bus they have been the last two weeks either.

It's clear, Michigan needs Wilton back and needs to try to find some confidence on offense.   The defense continues to play well, but the Ohio State offense is another monster.

Jimmy says Wilton is day to day and since he was dressed, the injury looks to be more of an shoulder sprain then a broken collarbone.   Either way, its time for the Michigan seniors to step up this week and turn up the intensity in practice.  It's the seniors that will win or lose the game next Saturday at noon.

Indiana Preview

Image result for Official Indiana State University Mascot

Time: 3:30
Location: Big House
TV: ESPN
Weather: 39, Windy with Rain/Snow
Line: Michigan -23

Got to love Ann Arbor weather, Friday it is a high of 70 and Sunny.   Saturday and Sunday it could snow.    That might not be the story of the weather, as it is predicted to have 20 mph wind right around kick-off.   That is going to limit the passing game on both sides.

Both of these teams are coming off a loss, Michigan stunk it up in Iowa and IU played Penn State close at home.    The Hoosiers have given up on average 46 points over the last 4 games against the Wolverines, which were all shoot outs.

Tale of the Tape

O'Korn vs. IU DB's = ?
Michigan Running Game vs. IU Stacked Box = ?
IU Offense vs. Michigan D =  Michigan D
Turnovers = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Upset minded = IU

Its hard to believe we are at senior day for the Wolverines this season.  This season has gone by like a flash!  The weather is going to be cold and windy and maybe some rain or snow.   Are the Wolverines ready to dominate or are they still licking their wounds from last week?   Its hard to know which team will show up on Saturday against an opponent that has given the Wolverines fits the last 4 years.   On the other hand, IU hasn't beaten the Wolverines in Ann Arbor since 1967.

Yell, Its been a pleasure watching you this year to the team if.............................
  • O'Korn plays well and doesn't turn the ball over
  • Having O'Korn in gives the running game another dynamic
  • Michigan's offensive line is handling IU defense
  • Michigan has 250 yards on the ground
  • Michigan's defensive line lives in IU's backfield
Yell, not this sh*t again! if...........................
  • Michigan can't move the ball due to the weather and IU defense
  • Michigan's defense still can't slow a good spread team
  • O'Korn is turning the ball over
  • Michigan looks like the team that played in Iowa

If you are looking for an upset on Saturday, it's not hard to look to Ann Arbor for it.   Michigan has struggled against IU and the weather could be just terrible.  IU has had some near misses against two top 10 teams in Penn State and OSU.   IU is also one win away from going to a bowl game.  To top it off, Michigan's starting QB has a shoulder issue and is likely out for the game.

Michigan is the better team as they were last weekend.   This team is either going to show up and blitz the hell out of IU into a blow out or going to be sluggish and be surprised they are in another battle.  IU has a much better defense this year and will try to make O'Korn beat them in the Air against a 20 mph wind.

IU has struggled with turnovers and have 9 the last two games which include 7 fumbles.   Michigan is probably the best defense they have seen this year.   With the poor weather, I expect the football to be on the ground often.  I don't have a feel for this game and I don't like that feeling.   I think this game could be ugly and a lot closer then we think.

Michigan 28 IU 20

Michigan Thursday: Looks At The Big Ten Weekend and Thinks About Jimmy Coaching The Next 2 Weeks

This is a strange weekend for the Big Ten.  It doesn't really have any huge games and a few weird match ups.   Lets take a look:

Most interesting game of the week:

Northwestern at Minnesota:  The Golden Gophers are a very quiet 7-3 and Northwestern needs one more win to be bowl eligible at 5-5 right now.   Northwestern has been playing pretty good football in the Big Ten put will need to travel to a cold Minneapolis.    Northwestern is actually favored by 1 point in this game.   Minnesota 28 Northwestern 24

Ohio State at MSU:  This was supposed to be the major match-up this weekend but MSU didn't play their part and only has 3 wins on the season.   They did blow out Rutgers last weekend at home and maybe have a little more confidence.   MSU for some reason always plays Ohio State tough, I still can't believe they beat them in Columbus last year.   Maybe it will rain and snow and keep this game close, as we know OSU hates traveling to The Great Lakes State.   OSU is favored by 21.5 points.   OSU 31 MSU 14

Iowa at Illinois:  Iowa got a huge win last weekend, when Michigan decided not to show up.   They won't have too much trouble with Illinois this weekend.  Iowa -9.5.   Iowa 18 Illinois 10

Maryland at Nebraska:  I'm betting DJ is happy this is his last game in a killer stretch of Michigan, OSU and Nebraska.   They get Rutgers next week for a Bowl Game.  Nebraska -13.   Nebraska 41 Maryland 28

Wisconsin at Purdue:  Wisconsin -27.5

Penn State at Rutgers: PSU -28
------------------------------------------------

We all know Jimmy is a great football coach.  These next two weeks are going to test how good he really is.   Jimmy is known as a great QB coach and his first string QB may or may not play this weekend against a team that Michigan has had trouble with in the past. Not to mention having to take a back up to Columbus.   If Wilton is healthy enough to play, he will have missed most of the week of practice and is coming off his worst start of his career.

The team last week was not up for playing a night game in Iowa.   That offensive performance last weekend was dreadful.   This IU team is improved on the defensive side of the football and I would say maybe not as explosive on offense as they've have been the last few years.   IU is 5-5 and looking for a signature win and have played OSU and PSU tough, but lost.   They want this victory very badly against a team that might be looking to next week.

The coaches understand this and will have "to over coach" these next two weeks.  This is the first time in a long time, Michigan has the talent and coaching to match-up with OSU.   Do they have the confidence to win?   That question will be answered next weekend.   They need to keep their sites set on Indiana this weekend.

  • The grapevine has been saying, people have seen Wilton around campus without a sling and seems to be walking normally (meaning arms swinging, etc).

  • #1 Player in the nation RB Najee Harris will take an official to Ann Arbor. Probably sometime in December.

  •  4-star CB and ND commit Elijah Hicks will visit A2 this weekend.

  • High winds are expected on Saturday during the game 20-40 mph

Wolverine Wednesday: All Roads Still Go Through Columbus

I really don't like the CFP rankings.   It's just gives ESPN and other sports outlets something to talk about.   Having OSU #2 and Michigan #3 only means that the winner may or may not move on to the Big Ten Championship game.  The Iowa loss only confirms that Michigan won't make the playoffs if they stumble in C-Bus.

In fact, OSU needs help just getting into the Big Ten Championship game but seems to have a road to the CFP as a non-conference champion.  Which could mean 2 Big Ten teams in the playoffs.

The other thing I don't like is that Michigan is hosting a good Indiana team this weekend and over looking them with a new QB under center, could be a very bad thing.

  • 24/7 is reporting that Stribling and Hill should be ready to go this weekend.  Both got dinged up at Iowa.

  • The inside word continues to be that Wilton is out for the next two weeks (hopefully 3 weeks) but could play in a bowl game.   The official word from Michigan is that he is still day to day.

  • If you haven't heard ESPN GameDay is going to Kalamazoo this weekend for the Western Michigan game.

RDI expands presence in Wicomico County

RDI Wire & Cable Solutions, Inc., a veteran-owned manufacturing company that provides products for the military, aerospace, automotive, and engineering industries, is expanding its presence in Wicomico County.

With a current staff of 20 employees, the company plans to hire 50 new employees over the next three years, including workers who were displaced when the Labinal Power Systems’ plant in Salisbury closed last year. RDI anticipates investing a minimum of $375,000 on upgrades in its facility, including new machines, computers, and furniture to accommodate the increase in workers.

“Our goal is to expand manufacturing operations in Salisbury by attracting new customers and providing additional employment opportunities for workers in the wire and cable industry,” said David Bernstein, president of RDI Wire & Cable Solutions. “We’ve achieved our AS9100C and veteran-owned business certifications, which, when coupled with our skilled associates, will allow us to competitively compete in our market. We appreciate Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development, the City of Salisbury, Wicomico County, and the state of Maryland for assisting us with all aspects of our operation.”

RDI is a wire harness manufacturer that specializes in the military and aerospace industries. After transitioning from commercial wire and cable products in 2010, the company redirected its focus to high-end products for the military drone market. Today, the company’s wire products and cable assemblies are used in military aircraft and vehicles.

“The expansion of RDI Wire & Cable Solutions on the Eastern Shore is an outstanding example of the progress and economic growth happening all over our state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We are particularly proud of Maryland’s highly-skilled workforce, and I commend this company for hiring recently displaced employees as they more than triple their workforce in the coming years.”

Michigan Tuesday: Welcomes JK-P To The 2017 Class

Breaking News seems to be pretty common place around the Michigan program this week.   4 star Safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell from Cass Tech has finally committed to Michigan on Sam Webb's radio show this morning.  K-P is the 19th commit to the class and cousins with CB Ambry Thomas and teammate of 5 star WR DP-J.  Yes, please to all 3 guys in Michigan's class.

Like I mentioned, Jaylen is a 4 star across the board, minus Rivals who has him as a 3 star.   Scout, ESPN and 24/7 Composite have him in ranked in the 260 player in the country range.   He is 6'0 and 180 pounds.

His offer list includes big time programs:  Alabama, Auburn, Cal, Colorado, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, UCLA, and Wisconsin.

JK-P will be inline to compete for immediate playing time as both of Michigan's safeties are graduating after this season.   He is the second commit at this position in this class as he joins J'Marick Woods as incoming freshman.    This is probably it for Safety in this class.

Michigan still needs Wide Receivers, DT and LB's in this class.   I still believe this class will only get to 25-26 range, even though some are predicting the low 30's.

This is a great instate pick-up and I hope it leads to the commitment of the other two guys.

- Please note Jimmy is saying that Wilton is not out for the year and will miss a few practices this week and then be re-evaluated. As we know, Jimmy is not one to talk about injuries so its hard to know what is accurate and what is gamesmanship.

Breaking News: Wilton is Done For the Regular Season

Mgoblog is reporting that Wilton Speight has broken his collarbone and is out for the regular season.   He broke his collarbone in high school and that is why he is a year older then his classes mates as he re-classified for the next year.

There is a chance he could come back for a bowl game, depending on if he needs surgery and how quickly he heals.

The news just keeps getting better and better.   Welcome John O'Korn to the starting QB job against Indiana and in Columbus against Ohio State.

Maryland delegation attends MEDICA 2016

The Maryland Department of Commerce is leading a delegation of 10 Maryland companies this week to MEDICA 2016, the world’s largest medical trade show held every year in Dusseldorf, Germany. This is the seventh year that Maryland – through Commerce’s Office of International Investment and Trade – has participated in the global trade show as part of a continuing strategy to boost trade and promote Maryland to overseas businesses.

Maryland is hosting a 54 square-meter booth at the show, and has grown its delegation of companies over the years due to increased demand. Each of the Maryland companies in the delegation will have a kiosk within the booth to showcase their products and services to the more than 130,000 attendees from around the world.

“MEDICA gives Maryland the opportunity to show off our businesses and interact with some of the world’s top global health companies and decision makers,” said Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “While promoting the state as a great place to do business, our participating companies are able to interact with the global audience and find ways to attract investment. Our ExportMD program has enabled many companies in our delegation to attend international trade shows and promote their products abroad.”

The companies exhibiting at MEDICA this year include BioElectronics Corporation (Frederick); Corbin Clinical Resources (Cumberland); EndoCure Technologies (Beltsville); EndoSurg Medical Inc. (Beltsville); Get Real Health (Rockville); IOB Medical (Gaithersburg); Lifeline Medical Supplies (Hyattsville); LKC Technologies (Gaithersburg); Smith Associates (Crofton); and Tetracore Inc. (Rockville).

Returning for its second year with the Maryland delegation is Get Real Health, a global health information technology pioneer specializing in comprehensive patient engagement solutions. The health IT company recently expanded its global reach to Sweden and anticipates adding more international clients as a result of MEDICA.

“The Maryland Department of Commerce has been extremely supportive of small businesses like ours,” said Robin Wiener, president and founding partner of Get Real Health. “We are thrilled to return to Germany and exhibit at MEDICA along with other innovative Maryland companies and showcase why Maryland has such a great environment for international business.”

Michigan Monday: Tries To Pick Up The Pieces

The sting from Saturday night still continues on Monday morning.  The rumor mill is spinning that Wilton is hurt, we just don't know how bad.   The wild west of the Internet is saying it could be pretty much any type of shoulder issue.   I doubt we will hear too much from Jimmy today, other then he is dinged up.  I do expect we will see some O'Korn against Indiana as they will want to make sure a QB is ready for the trip to Columbus.

Michigan was very sluggish on Saturday.   Maybe it was the cold or the time of day, but that wasn't even close to the team we have been watching all year.

Here are a couple other issues from Saturday Night:
  • Michigan had 10 players on the field for the final field goal, after a time out.

  • The play calling was also suspect all night.  Michigan wasn't getting anything on the edges and  continued to call those runs.   Don't run McDoom into #14 side and don't call that play for Higdon on 3rd down.
Time to move forward.

  • Michigan is #4 in both polls

  • The Michigan loss cost OSU the most.   If Michigan beats OSU, the Wolverines head to the Big Ten Championship.   If OSU beats Michigan and Penn State doesn't lose (Rutgers and MSU), Penn State goes to the Big Ten Championship game.   Someone could have made huge money in Vegas if they had bet that possibility 6 weeks ago.

A look at IU:

5-5

Best Win:  Maryland
Worst Loss:  Wake or Northwestern

Lost last week to Penn State at home 45-31.

I thought IU might have a better season then they have had this year.   IU has played both OSU and PSU pretty tough.   They can still score a ton of points and now playing better defense.   They have been looking for that signature win and will try to get it at the Big House.

IU recently has given Michigan difficult games and this week will probably be similar as both teams are coming off disappointing loses and both teams have a lot to play for.   IU wants to go to a Bowl and Michigan still has a Big Ten Championship game aspirations.

Caroline Economic Development Corporation Launches New Brand

Guest feature: Angela Visintainer is the director of economic development for Caroline Economic Development Corporation. Follow CEDC on Facebook and Twitter.

Caroline Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) has launched a new brand to attract businesses, talent, and visitors to Caroline County. Establishing a strong brand for the County was identified as a top priority in CEDC’s five-year strategic plan for economic development.

The new brand was built around the tagline “You Belong Here,” which was chosen after extensive community input. CEDC hired Choptank Communications, a marketing firm based on the Eastern Shore, to conduct focus groups, a public survey, and one-on-one interviews with key stakeholders throughout Caroline County. Participants were asked to provide their insight into the culture and characteristics that best define the County. In total, nearly 400 people who live and/or work in Caroline County provided input that helped shape the brand.

“It was interesting to see how consistent feedback was across demographic groups and industries,” said Angela Visintainer, Director of Economic Development. “There were very clear themes that emerged. Almost everyone talked about how warm and down-to-earth Caroline County is, and how it just feels like home. Many people also spoke about how collaborative and close relationships are in the County. There are a lot of very strong partnerships.”

Based on the input from the community, Choptank Communications proposed the tagline “You Belong Here” to serve as the foundation of the new brand. This was reflected back to many of the same people who participated in the focus groups and interviews to get their feedback on the concept. There was overwhelming consensus that “You Belong Here” accurately captures the character of Caroline County.

Both Economic Development and Tourism will be incorporating the new “You Belong Here” brand into all future marketing efforts. CEDC will also offer to share the tagline with other County agencies, departments, and non-profits, as well as the various municipalities throughout the County.

“Our hope is that the brand will be widely adopted, which will create a consistent message and experience for everyone visiting, living, or working in the County,” said Visintainer.

To learn more about the new brand for Economic Development and Tourism, please visit the CEDC website at CarolineBusiness.com.

Our Dirty Little Secret

We all have a side of us we try to keep away from family and friends.  It might be we have a few too many drink at parties or like to bet on the ponies.   It's something that is always there but we hide it from our everyday life.

That something for the Michigan Football team, came out on Saturday for the entire world to see.   Michigan's kryptonite has been playing road games against any type of teams.   Good Defense and a running game is supposed to "travel", Michigan is yet to find that winning combination on the road.  It doesn't even have to be competitive teams, we all remember the Hoke and RR years where we struggled to beat teams like UConn.   We started to see it in the Michigan State game, whether we wanted to believe it or not.    The other thing that  had us worried is that Wilton would have a terrible game in him.   I didn't know if it was going to be the weather, the location or the opponent that would make him struggle but we all worried a performance like that was coming.

Iowa is not a good football team and Michigan made them look like world beaters on Saturday night.  Iowa on offense was one dimensional in running the football.   The QB's only job was to hand off the football, he wasn't going to throw the ball.   This is exactly what the Michigan's defense wants and they could barely stop it.    As alarming as that sounds, that wasn't the story of the game.

Michigan lost this game on offense.

  • The Iowa defense has two good players and Michigan couldn't seem to block either one of them all game.

  • Wilton had his worst game of his career, he looked like the guy that came into the Minnesota game for the first few series.   Darboh was living behind the Iowa defensive backfield all night  and Wilton couldn't get him the ball.   Some of his other throws were just ducks.  I don't know if it was the location, night game or the colder conditions, but that wasn't the same guy we have seen.

  • Kyle Kalis was getting pushed around by Johnson all night.   For Kalis to let him free on the safety is just ridiculous.   Those two points change momentum and ended up being the difference in the game.  (there is some talk that was actually Hill's blown assignment)

  • Even though Smith ran hard, I thought he continued to miss holes.

  • Chesson had 3 balls that I thought he should have caught

  • The offensive line had the worst performance of the year, they couldn't run or pass block.

  • Michigan needed points with about 4 minutes to play and Wilton throws into double coverage and behind Darboh and it gets picked.  That can't happen.

  • Hill's fumble on the second half kick off was another game changing moment.

  • Michigan was one first down away from winning this game and the offense couldn't get that done.  Stribling's interception ended up being a curse because the offense couldn't get more then a couple of yards.

  • Harbaugh seems to have an Iowa City curse, he gets hit by a mail truck in kindergarten, loses 10-12 as a QB and now 14-13 as a coach.

  • Side note:  That Big Ten officiating crew is terrible.   Is it possible for them to stop doing Michigan games?

The Michigan defense did not play great, but they played well enough to win this game.   The offense gave up points to Iowa and basically couldn't move the ball at all.

The other thing this game showed me, is this team is not ready to beat Ohio State in Columbus.   I can't believe we have gone from talking about the CFP to maybe having two losses this year in the regular season.    What a terrible night.

EPSN predicts that Michigan has a 92% of winning this game.  Michigan is coming off a home blowout win over Maryland 59-3, Iowa lost on the road to Penn State 41-14.  Michigan is 9-0 and Iowa is 5-4 with 3 out of the 4 losses coming in Big Ten play.

There is no overnight fix here," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters. "The cavalry is not coming and we're going to play with the guys we have and try to find answers."

#1 Iowa beat a #2 Michigan 12-10 in 1985, the Wolverines QB was Jim Harbaugh.
I'm guessing he hasn't forgotten that game.

Tale of the Tape:

Iowa Offense vs. Michigan D = Michigan
Michigan Offense vs. Iowa D = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Momentum = Michigan
Intangibles = Iowa

This match-up favors Michigan at pretty much every position group.   Iowa is struggling and Michigan has it's sights on OSU and getting into the Big Ten Championship game.   It will be pretty cold in the 40's on Saturday night and Iowa will be looking to save it's season by beating the #1 team in the Big Ten.   This is only the second time this season, that Michigan has left the state to play a football game.

Yell Play John O'Korn in corn country if............
  • Michigan comes ready to play and puts Iowa away early
  • Wilton continues to play very well and clean
  • Michigan gets over 200 yards on the ground
  • Smith goes over 100 yards
  • Butt goes over 100 yards
  • Michigan D keeps Iowa under 10 points

Yell, Is this Michigan's House of Horrors? if...........
  • Michigan is turning the ball over in cold weather
  • Iowa is hitting it's tight ends on 3rd downs for 1st downs
  • Iowa is running the ball on the outside of Michigan's defense
  • Iowa is getting TD's instead of field goals

Iowa hasn't scored more then 14 points against these defenses:  Rutgers, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State.   Michigan's defense is comparable to Wisconsin but much better then the rest of those teams.   On the other side of the ball, Michigan has outscored its opponents 210-34 over the last 4 games.

This game has been circled on the schedule all year for the Wolverines.  Jimmy said, they have been practicing well and should be ready for the test in Iowa City.   As we have seen over the years, this is not an easy place to play.    Though, they have lost 3 times at home this year (NDSU, NW and Wisconsin).

This will be an old fashion Big Ten game.  Both teams want to be physical, run the ball and use the tight ends.  Michigan is clearly better team but so was Ohio State when they visited Happy Valley.   Weird things can happen on the road on Saturday night.    Michigan will need to score touchdowns and can't let Iowa get too confident on offense.   Iowa will have over coached their team this week hoping for a big upset.   Michigan needs to jump on them early and take away their will to win.   I like the run/pass game to confuse the Iowa defense, Wilton will need to make sure not to test Detroit's Desmond King too often.  Let us not forget that Iowa picked QB CJ Bethard over Jake Rudock last year, which allowed him to come to Michigan.

Michigan will play well but will give up a few points.   I hope the defense plays like they did earlier in the year then against MSU.   I still have nightmares from past Michigan road performances.   This is a different team, with a great coach that will have his team prepared for this road test.

Michigan 38 Iowa 10

Giving Thanks & Going Local

From appetizers to dessert and everything in between, you can help power Maryland’s economy and support local farmers and businesses by buying local this Thanksgiving. Here are some ideas for incorporating locally-produced food and goods into your Thanksgiving meal.

Turkey

Locally-raised turkeys have superior flavor, as evidenced by the high demand for them, Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder said. According to the USDA Census in 2012, consumers supported 117 Maryland farms by purchasing 154,404 turkeys directly from them. Given the high demand, Bartenfelder advises Marylanders to place orders for their turkeys early.

“For the freshest, best tasting turkey this Thanksgiving, order a locally-raised Maryland turkey,” said Bartenfelder. “Don’t forget to place your orders early for local Thanksgiving turkeys, as many Maryland farms will sell out.” To find a local turkey for your Thanksgiving feast, visit the Maryland’s Best website.

Wine

With more than 400 different kinds, there’s plenty of Maryland wine to choose from. Need help deciding which ones to buy? Keep an eye out for these 2016 Governor’s Cup winners. Stop by a local winery to pick up a few bottles, or keep an eye out for Maryland wines at the more than 800 retailers.

Cheese

Maryland’s 443 dairy farms employ 4,255 people and contribute $1.1 billion to the state. Help continue to support Maryland’s dairy farmers by picking up some locally-made cheese to accompany your Thanksgiving wine. Here is a list of dairy farms that sell their products directly to consumers.

Farmers’ Market Finds

Many farmers’ markets have wrapped up for the year, but the Carroll County Farmers’ Market and Baltimore City Farmers’ Market & Bazaar continue to run into December. Visit either of these markets to pick up unique finds for your Thanksgiving spread, including nuts, pickles, jams, gourmet dips, and baked goods. With arts and crafts vendors at both markets, you can get a head start on holiday shopping.

If you’re supporting local businesses when buying your Thanksgiving goods or holiday gifts, let us know in the comments or on Twitter with #BuyLocalMD.

Michigan Thursday: Looks At The Big Ten Weekend

We all know who plays in primetime on ABC this weekend but there are other interesting games that many of us might follow while we wait for the 8:00 kick off.

Best Big10 Game of the Weekend:

Rutgers at MSU:  Both teams have a perfect record in the Big Ten at 0-6.   Michigan State played above their level two weeks ago against Michigan and then lost to Illinois last weekend.   Rutgers has been playing better lately after dropping a close 0-78 game to the Wolverines.  Someone has to win this game right?  We don't have ties anymore in college football which is a shame for this game.    MSU is a two TD favorite in this one.   MSU 21 Rutgers 20

Minnesota at Nebraska:  Are you surprised to learn that Minnesota is 7-2?  They have the same record as Nebraska who is coming off two defeats in a row.  The Golden Gophers are tied for first place in the Big 10 West.   Could the Little Brown Jug be up for grabs if both Michigan and Minnesota make it to Indy?  If that is going to happen they better win this game.   Nebraska is a TD favorite.   Nebraska 24 Minnesota 21

Penn State at IU:  This is an interesting game.  Penn State has become a top 10 team after beating Ohio State on a couple of fluky plays.   They sure didn't look like a top 10 teams when they played in A2.   IU is no joke but I don't think they are as powerful as in years past.   PSU is a 7.5 favorite.
PSU 38 IU 28

OSU at Maryland:  OSU is a 29 point favorite.

Northwestern at Purdue:  The Wildcats are a decent team but they are two wins short of a bowl game.  They better pick one up this weekend.   NW is a 13.5 favorite.   NW 31 Purdue 24

Illinois at Wisconsin:  Wisconsin is a 26.5 favorite

  • DT Jay Tufele who visited A2 recently, will now visit OSU for the Michigan game.

  • Sam Webb says that the Michigan coaches feel confident about the recruitment of CB Ambry Thomas.  I hope so, he is a talented kid, that I hope we don't lost to MSU.

  • Les Miles will attend the Michigan - IU game next week

  • Jimmy said on the radio this morning the team has had a good week of practice and the defense has been working on tackling on the edges.   I think we saw issues there in the MSU and Maryland games.   That has to be fixed before IU and OSU.

  • Michigan has lost 4 out 5 games against Iowa

Wolverine Wednesday: Updates Some Recruiting News and Notes

  • Seems that Aubrey Solomon and his mom enjoyed last weekends visit to Ann Arbor.  Of course, Jimmy put Momma Gwen on Aubrey's mom as she was the first to do a questionnaire for her son's recruitment.   It seems they hit it off and Aubrey already loves Michigan as he committed here before.   He is a great prospect but I think every visit he goes on will be great and he will end up staying close to home.   It seems Mom holds a lot of the cards in this decision.

  • I want some Wide Receivers! It seems Oliver Martin's recruitment is coming down to Michigan and MSU.   I wish he would just pull the trigger for the good guys.

  • Michigan continues to be the leader for Alabama 4 star WR Nico Collins who took his official last weekend with his family.   This is another recruitment that the longer it goes, the worse it is for the Wolverines.   Too much time for the SEC and their recruiting practices to take effect.

  • Michigan insider Sam Webb is saying that Michigan might take up to 5 LB's in this class.   Some of the top guys the could join the 2017 class include, IMG's Jordan Anthony, Mississippi Willie Gay and Paramus Catholic's Drew Singleton.   Michigan already has two LB's committed in Ben Mason and Josh Ross.

  • Want to know how serious Grant Newsome's knee injury is?  He just left the hospital after 38 days.

  • Since I want WR's in this class so much, I am going to add Brad Hawkins back on the commit list.  Brad as you know committed to Michigan last year but is in prep school now.   I believe he is still planning to enroll in January, which would allow him to use a scholarship from his original class or 2017.

Local startups win $25,000 for research, commercialization

Faculty from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University and local entrepreneurs were recently recognized for their groundbreaking research with $200,000 in prizes.

The awards were made by the two universities, the Abell Foundation and the Maryland Department of Commerce as part of a day-long 2016 Innovation Showcase. The event was cohosted by the Johns Hopkins Alliance for Science and Technology Development and the University of Maryland, Baltimore Commercial Advisory Board.

First awarded in 2010 to support early-stage research and enable commercialization, the Maryland Department of Commerce prizes are two $25,000 grants to startup companies affiliated with Hopkins and UMB. In addition, the schools awarded two $25,000 prizes to university researchers, and the Abell Foundation awarded two $50,000 prizes to university researchers to address critical funding gaps in the translation to market of promising university research and invention.

Maryland Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Ben Wu presented prizes to two startups: Paitagen, LLC, a UMB spinout developing fast, accurate and inexpensive tests to detect bacteria and fungi; and Max and Haley, a spinout of Hopkins Technology Ventures, developing fully integrated hardware, software and treatment protocol solutions for neurological rehabilitation.

Other prizes went to researchers Bob Ernst for his research on Anti-Sepsis Lipid A-based (ASLA) Therapeutics, and Aaron Chang who is developing a system for prevention of acute kidney injury called Renalert.

Winners of the Abell Foundation awards are UMB inventor Erimy Polf who created the 3D Gamma Imaging System for Medical Applications; and John Murphy and William Bishai who are developing of a Second-Generation, Improving Ontak for cancer immunotherapy at Johns Hopkins.

“We are proud to collaborate with Johns Hopkins, the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the Abell Foundation to help advance the groundbreaking research being spun out of these world-class universities from the lab into the commercial marketplace,” said Commerce Deputy Secretary Ben Wu. “I salute all of the faculty innovators and entrepreneurs for the important role they play in keeping our state on the cutting edge of innovation and discovery.”

“More faculty at Johns Hopkins than ever are interested in translating their technologies from bench to bedside,” said Christy Wyskiel, Senior Adviser for Enterprise Development at Johns Hopkins University. “The Alliance meeting allows us to showcase many of these inventions and startups, demonstrating the breadth of innovation occurring right here in Baltimore. We are grateful for the support from the Maryland Department of Commerce and from the Abell Foundation.”

“This again was an outstanding showcase of our best translationally-focused and commercially-oriented technologies,” said Jay A. Perman, MD, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore. “These awards will stimulate further discovery and we are excited about the prospects for this year’s winners.”

Robert C. Embry, Jr., President of the Abell Foundation, added, “The Innovation Showcase offers a terrific opportunity for exceptional research-based discoveries among faculty and researchers at both institutions to be showcased and promoted.”

The annual meeting was attended by more than 200 venture capitalists, seasoned biotech entrepreneurs and business development executives from the biopharma industry. Judging committees evaluated presentations from startups and university researchers before selecting the two winners.
