Michigan Friday: This Is The Longest Commit Watch Of My Life

The Michigan Football team has been under "commit watch" since Monday morning.   Many thought QB 2020 Harrison Bailey was the guy that had committed but he pick Tennessee over Michigan yesterday afternoon.   This was a bit of a surprise, but Michigan has a deep QB room right now and  the 2020 early signing period is still over a year away.   Also Michigan is looking for dual treat guys and Bailey is a pro style drop back.

Sam Webb has mentioned its not Zach Harrison who Coach Harbaugh is expected to be in home with this week.

Jimmy was also visiting the family of FSU commit LB Kalen DeLoach.  He even visited his father and mother at their jobs during the afternoon.   So its probably not him.

Thank goodness for private airplanes as coach also was in home with OT Trevor Keegan on Thursday night.   So probably not TK yet either.

Michigan coaches were out to see WR Cornelius Johnson who is expected to be down to Michigan and Stanford but is leaning towards the Farm.

Huge OT Dawand Jones has a December announcement date planned.

Might be instate DE who Michigan is recruiting as a TE Darius Robinson.

Some insiders are saying it could be Anthony Solomon a guy that really hasn't been on the radar lately because he is a Miami commit.  He is a 4 star LB.

So your guess is as good as mine?
  • 4 star TE Isaiah Foskey is expected to take a visit to Michigan

  • 3 star OT Danielson Ike will take a 3 day visit from 12/14-12/16 the weekend prior to the early signing period from 12/20-12/22

  • Jim McElwain seems to be the leading candidate for the CMU HC job

  • Jourdan Lewis got his first NFL Interception last night to beat the Saints

  • Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech has retired and it's expected that Bill Snyder will also retire from KSU

11 Maryland tech companies among fastest growing in North America

iLearningEngines, Homesnap, and Trinity Technology Partners, Inc. top the list of the fastest growing tech companies in Maryland, according to the 2018 Deloitte Technology Fast 500. Overall, 11 Maryland companies were named to prestigious technology awards rankings, including Supernus Pharmaceuticals and Paragon Bioservices, who both announced expansions in the state earlier this year.

Michigan Thursday: The Jokes on You Ohio, We're A Basketball School Now!

Robin Buckson, Det News
I think its fair to say the results of last Saturday's contest in Columbus, Ohio was less then satisfactory.  I would also happen to guess that many Wolverine fans have been in a slight depression or fog since then.

Well folks, the sun did rise this morning!  Did I mention that John Beilein's team is 7-0 and just ran the North Carolina Tar heels out of Crisler?

I have watched all of Michigan's basketball games this season and the Wolverines are not playing well, they are playing great.   They have wins over Villanova, George Washington, Providence, and NC by an average of 21 points.   That's on the offenses side of the ball.   Let's talk some defense!

North Carolina is the highest scoring team in the country, averaging just under 100 points per game (94).  Michigan held them to 67 and no opponent has scored 70 points or more this year.

What's scary, this team has a lot to approve on.  Their free throw shooting is terrible and Michigan probably missed 5-6 lays ups/bunnies last night.  The Wolverines shot 50% from 3 but many of those missed shots were good looks that normally go in.   Jordan Poole has been hot and cold all year, he started very slow last night but shot his way to 18 points in the second half.   To quote a famous Tar Heel that has his symbol on the Wolverines jerseys, The Ceiling is the Roof! for this team.   :)

  • 2020 QB Harrison Bailey will announce his college decision today at 2:45.

  • Jeff Brohm decided to stay at Purdue which pretty much seals the deal that George Karlafitis will stay committed to the Boilermakers.

  • Modern Family last night had a football reference to "Chicken being a nervous bird".

Urban farming initiative launches in Baltimore City

The state of Maryland has announced a multi-partner agreement to establish a pilot urban farming initiative in Baltimore City. The project aims to transform a portion of a vacant lot in West Baltimore into a garden which will produce crops such as indigo, beets, onions, marigolds, and Black-eyed Susans to make natural dyes for artistic, educational, and commercial use.

Wolverine Wednsday: Welcomes North Carolina

For some reason it seems the basketball blue bloods don't often make a trip to Crisler Arena in the non-conference season.   That changes tonight as North Carolina will play against our Wolverines at 9:00 on ESPN in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.   Should be a good one!

  • I don't have any inside information but 2020 QB Harrison Bailey (who has the most QB name ever) will make his commitment announcement on Thursday.   I expect this is the reason for the commit watch.  He will make a decision between Michigan and Tennessee tomorrow.

  • Jeff Brohm is expected to make his Louisville vs. Purdue decision today.  As we know, if Jeff leaves that opens Michigan's door to George Karlaftis.

  • Coaches were out to see Mazi Smith on Tuesday.

  • Coach Washington visited with Joey Velazquez

  • Congratulations to Devin Bush on being named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year!

  • Will Hart was named Big Ten Punter of the Year!

  • 14 Wolverines got All Big Ten Honors

Michigan Tuesday: Recruiting News and Gary Heads To The NFL

The Michigan coaches don't have time to drown their sorrows on a beach somewhere after the train wreck on Saturday.   They have to hit the recruiting trail as home visits are now available and signing day is quickly approaching.

Here is what we know so far:
  • Coach Washington was out to see Gabe Newburg
  • Coach Moore out to see Erik All
  • Coach Mattison is expected to visit Purdue commit George Karlaftis this week

Michigan is also on commit watch as someone is expected to announce they are attending Michigan real soon.

Michigan also lost a couple of recruits that won't cause any concern.   The first was Michigan's lowest rated recruit in the 2019 class DE Tyrece Woods who de-committed on Thanksgiving.  Many believe Michigan asked Woods to look for other options with a number of top ranked guys still considering Michigan for the 2019 class.   This strategy probably doesn't help Michigan's relationship with Belleville High School moving forward.

Yesterday, 2020 RB Tim Baldwin de-committed after committing a few weeks ago during a visit for the Penn State game.   This is a clear example of a kid getting excited during a visit and pulling the trigger a bit too early.

This time of year I guess Michigan's Board for top recruits in order of importance:
  1. 5 Star DE Zach Harrison
  2. 4 Star DE George Karlaftis
  3. 5 star Athlete Quavaris Crouch
  4. 4 Star OT Trevor Keegan
  5. 4 Star LB Kalen DeLoach
  6. 3 Star OT Dawand Jones
  7. 4 Star WR Cornelius Johnson
Michigan has 24 commits but Eric Gray is considered a "soft" commit and is expected to de-commit unless something changes.    I expect Michigan will take 4-6 more players in this class.

Speaking of things that did come as a surprise, Rashan Gary announced he is entering the NFL Draft on Monday. Gary was Michigan's highest ranked recruit in the recruiting services era per 24/7.

He was a quiet leader at U of M and had a quiet productive 3 years.  He is ranked #8 on Mel Kiper's Big Board and is making the right now

A Lot of Oysters Put No Pearls

Michigan finished this regular season 10-2.  When Hoke was here getting Shane Morris concussed we would have made a deal with the devil to get back to 10-2.   So for the most part, Harbaugh has done his job at Michigan.   This program had PTGD (post traumatic game disorder) before Harbaugh even got here.  I was never worried about losses to MSU,  that was always going to turn around at some point.  Sparty is always going to go Sparty.

What makes zero sense to me is how Harbaugh and Brown prepare for the Ohio State game.   We all assumed that Harbaugh was "holding back" this offense to not show OSU anything.  We were wrong.
I'm sure you have heard this saying regarding preparing for a team that runs the triple option:  They're very difficult to prepare for in a week but if you have multiple weeks, you can stop them.

That is where Harbaugh and Brown are letting Urban beat them.   OSU has been playing with the devil all year.  They have looked terrible against teams like Maryland, Minnesota, Indiana, and Purdue boat raced them.  I have finally figured it out.   Ohio State doesn't prepare for their weekly opponent, they prepare to beat Michigan every week of the season, hoping the Michigan prep will beat the other Big Ten schools as well.

Now I don't recommend this strategy for Michigan as this will get you beat by teams that shouldn't beat you, but its a better way to understand Ohio State.  For example, you can see how the above the triple option saying would be applicable to Don Brown's defense.    It's very hard to prepare for in one week but if you have been preparing for 10 weeks its much easier to beat.

Don Brown solves problems with aggression.   Which means he blitzes the hell out of QB's and bets the rush will get there before the QB can make the correct read.   This also leaves the middle of the field wide open for slants and QB runs.   Urban beat Don with QB runs with JT and beat Don on Saturday with slants.   The Michigan defense played poorly against Rutgers and Indiana and bottomed out on Saturday.   It's great that Michigan plays a great man to man defense, but if that's all they play then Michigan is very one dimensional.   If this ass whipping didn't come last Saturday, it would of come against Alabama in the Orange Bowl.

Now to the offense.

A good offense plays power against teams that struggle with power and spread teams out that struggle against the spread.   Trying to run what you do best even if its 100% predictable will get you beat by good teams 100% of the time.   Bo had a 100 great players and had a talent advantage at every position.  He could run the ball and beat you with defense.   That doesn't work anymore.

Since I'm not in the room,  I have no idea if this is a Jimmy or Pep problem.    My guess is this is a Jimmy problem.   Michigan needs some fresh ideas on offense and stop being so damn predictable.   What Michigan does today is fine to beat the mid-tier Big Ten teams but will not return this program to elite status.

So the game plan for Saturday as far as I can tell, was to run what Michigan does well on offense and play man to man against OSU fast wide receivers.   That is a 23 point game plan loss right there.

Jimmy said last year, Michigan had to get bigger and stronger after OSU beat them.   This time he needs to look in the mirror to find the change that he needs.

  • I couldn't find much upside from Saturday's result.  I guess I did save about $5000 in travel costs to the Big Ten Championship and to Miami for the Orange Bowl.

  • Bowl Game, I know it was an over reaction saying that Michigan should turn down a bowl bid, I guess the options are that Michigan is in the Rose, Fiesta, or Peach Bowl.   Michigan could face UCF in the Peach if they beat Memphis in their Championship game.   It will be interesting to see what Michigan team shows up at a bowl game.   Yah Peach Bowl!

Embarassing

I have been a Michigan fan my entire life.  Over that entire time, I can't ever remember being embarrassed to be a Michigan fan.  Michigan has played poorly and had disappointing losses but never was I embarrassed.

I have been embarrassed to be a Michigan fan twice in a year.  The first time was walking out of the Outback Bowl, where I watched a Michigan team quit and not want to be there.  Today was the second time for obvious reasons.

There is something wrong with this program.  The optimist will say, Michigan is 10-2 this year.  I will say Michigan didn't beat a good team this year.   MSU just beat Rutgers by 4 points at home and just got beat by Nebraska.  Wisconsin got blown out by Minnesota today.  Maybe Penn State but we know they aren't that good even though they are ranked #12 in the country.

Let me share a few thoughts about todays game after I have been able to think about a few things.

First off watching that game was like getting tortured for 4 hours.  It was incredibly painful.

  • Michigan had the blueprint on how to beat OSU by every game the Buckeyes played this year.  They knew the weakness in the OSU defense and knew that Haskins throws nothing but slants and screens.  Last week it was clear he would also run for first downs.  Michigan was un-prepared and whatever game plan they had was completely wrong.  Maryland took this OSU team to OT last week and just scored 3 points against Penn State this weekend.

  • There is a difference in playing to win and playing not to lose.  Michigan played not to lose today.  You might think I'm crazy but I knew it was going to be a long day after the second play.  Higdon runs for 8 yards on 1st down and then is taken out of the game.   On 2nd and 2 OSU is expecting a run and brings a run blitz, Shea play fakes and gets sacked.   Run the DAMN BALL WITH HIGDON Again!   Don't give this defense any confidence, which that play did.

  • OSU offensive line had struggled all year, today they looked like world beaters.   How does that happen?

  • I love Don Brown, but he can't play man to man coverage against every team.  He needs more Zone sets and today was big example of that.  He has one or two head scratchers a year and today was another one of them.  He mentioned he couldn't sleep after Penn State last year, this game will make him a insomniac.   JT Barrett couldn't throw but was a talented runner and Michigan couldn't stop him, Haskins doesn't run much and throws short passes and Michigan couldn't stop him.   Here a few teams that were in the game with OSU late:  Indiana, Maryland,  Minnesota, and Nebraska.  Michigan lost by 3 TD's today with the #1 defense in the country.  WTF?

  • Brandon Watson has had a good year and is a 5th year senior, but he has struggled covering fast guys his entire year.   Not expecting OSU to pick on him was another huge miss by the defensive coaching staff.

  • What is the deal with Ohio State?  I will never pick Michigan to beat them again, until the Wolverines prove they can do it.  This has gotten out of control and I have no idea what the solution is.

  • A bowl game?  I know this sounds absurd and its clearly an over reaction after that performance, but the Wolverines should consider turning down a bowl bid.   Here is why,  Winovich, Bush, Gary, and Higdon for sure shouldn't play.  I know they might want to play with their brothers one more time, but the Jake Butt situation is still too fresh in everyone's mind.   As mentioned above, the Outback Bowl last year was awful and I really don't want another performance like that coming off this game.  The bowl game is meaningless and the only value is really two more weeks of practice.   (I retract this statement if Michigan somehow gets to the Rose Bowl)

  • As much of this loss was on the defense, I still think Michigan needs an OC that can bring some innovation to this offense.  Jimmy is way too old school and that is not going to work against good teams.  I don't know if he is holding Pep back or if Pep's play calling is just boring but something needs to change.
This used to be my favorite day of the year, now I hate this day and have hated it for a long time.

Basketball Season Got Here Quickly

A complete train wreck by the Michigan coaches today.  Harbaugh and Don Brown 100% failed at their job and their team.   A total embarrassment.

I have no words for that train wreck today.

Ohio State Preview

SI.com
Time: 12:00
Location: Ohio Stadium
Weather: 51 & 80% rain
TV: Fox
Steam: Fox2Go
Line: Michigan -4.5

This game needs no introduction.  It stands on its own.  It's just a football game but it's called The Game, because this is the best rivalry in college football and maybe the best rivalry in all of sports.    Ohio State has dominated the series lately and that run came after Michigan dominated the series.  Its a rivalry that's born out of hate and respect.

Both teams come in 10-1 with loses to Indiana teams.  OSU got blown out by Purdue and Michigan lost it opener by 7 to #3 ranked Notre Dame.   You could make a case that Ohio State hasn't faced a good team all year and the one Michigan faced beat them on the first day of the season.   Winner goes to the Indy, the loser probably goes to the Rose Bowl.  Which seems strange and ironic.

Tale of the Tape:
Michigan Dline vs. OSU Oline = Michigan
Michigan Oline vs. OSU Dline = OSU
Michigan RB's vs. OSU LB's = Michigan
OSU Passing game vs. Michigan's DB's = OSU
Coaching = Push
Intangibles = Push
Momentum= Michigan

I have watched plenty of Ohio State football to know one thing.  They have played poorly pretty much all year.   I don't know if its the holes in the defense, Urban's health/off field issues, or rumors of his retirement.  Pretty much every game has been competitive whether they were playing Penn State or Maryland.

The OSU offense is the classic dink and dunk passing game.  The whole plan is to get the ball into their playmakers hands.   The OSU WR group is very talented and can take a WR screen to the house if the Wolverines are in the wrong defense or a DB misses a tackle.   The running game has been developing over the past couple of weeks and look for that to be a main point if it's raining in CBus during the game.  Urban knows plenty about Michigan, so expect a bunch of QB runs from Haskins (who usually doesn't run) because he knows that is a weakness in Michigan's defense when Brown blitzes he leaves the middle of the field wide open.

The OSU defense has been giving up a ton of big runs and the Maryland game last week was no exception.   The OSU LB's have struggled and if Michigan offensive line can give Higdon and Evans some holes there are yards to be made.

Yell how far of a drive is it from Columbus to Indy? if...………………
  • Shea protects the ball and has a day running for first downs and hitting WR's
  • The Michigan OLine plays great
  • Michigan's DLine stays in their rush lanes
  • Don Brown's defense is confusing Haskins and Urban
  • Michigan is gaining yards in the running game
  • Michigan DB's tackle well and don't get beat deep
Yell,  This F**king Sucks every year if...……………..
  • Whatever new offense OSU has confuses and surprises Michigan D
  • OSU is able to stop Michigan's running game
  • The rain makes the game a sloppy turnover fest
  • Michigan's road woes continue
  • Game looks more like ND then the Wisconsin game
OSU will not be the team we have seen all year.  They will be playing with a chip on their shoulder as a home underdog.   They will look completely different on both sides of the ball, because they always do against Michigan.   They also realize that the roles have changed and even though the Buckeyes have talent, Michigan is the better team this year.   Michigan has the #1 total defense in the country,  OSU's is ranked 75th.

Michigan has not looked good the last two weeks against Rutgers and Indiana.  They have given up long runs and some yards in the passing game.   Playing like that in this game will get them beat.  They have to find the Revenge Tour mojo and that might be difficult if Chase is in street clothes.   Michigan has to protect the middle of the field better then they did last week, while still getting pressure on Haskins.   Shea also has to play smart on offense, find Gentry, and the talented WR group for first downs and long drives.  If Michigan can get over 200 yards on the ground, I think they win this game.  A great defense and a good running game travels.  Time to flip the script.

Michigan 24 OSU 13

Big Ten Preview Week 13 - Happy Thanksgiving

There is only one game this weekend, but I'm told that other Big Ten games are being played.  Some will have impact on things like Bowl Games and whether head coaches stay in their role or not.

Not the Big Ten Game of The Week:

Nebraska @ Iowa (IA -10):  This game is played on Friday and the Big Ten has really wanted it to be a new tradition.  It hasn't stuck yet but with Frost in Lincoln maybe it will.   This is Nebraska's final game of the season and they will miss that Akron game that was cancelled as that would have been 6 wins on the season if they beat Iowa.   Nebraska is on a roll and just beat the Spartans 9-6 last week in some type of pillow fight.   Iowa should be in the Big Ten Championship game but was terrible down the stretch.   Nebraska 13 Iowa 17

Purdue @ Indiana (Pur -4):  Both teams are 5-6 just like they should be.  So this game is for more than just a bucket, its a chance to go to a bowl game.  Reports are by Monday or Tuesday Jeff Brohm will be heading back to Louisville.   Purdue plays terrible on the road.  IU 32 Purdue 31

Illinois @ Northwestern (NW-18):   Another non-rivalry game for instate schools.  Northwestern has its sites on Indy but will win this one easy.   NW 38 Illinois 12

Maryland @ Penn State (PSU -13.5):  Maryland had its shot last weekend and they over threw the ball.  They also don't play well on the road.   PSU 41 Maryland 21

Minnesota @ Wisconsin (WIS -10):  The Golden Gophers have played well at home but only has 5 wins.   So they probably are going to be home for the holidays.  Wisconsin 28 Minnesota 17

Rutgers @ MSU (MSU -27):  I'm not sure MSU could score 27 points on a field by themselves.  MSU 21 Rutgers 14

Enjoy your holiday!

Five reasons why Maryland is the best state in the U.S.

Does a Maryland flag don the front of your house? Do bright Calvert and Crossland patterns of the Maryland flag appear on your necktie, car bumper, or scarf? The Maryland flag is fun to show off, but you need more than a cool flag to make a state great. So here it is: the top five reasons why Maryland is the best state in the U.S.

Wolverine Wednesday: 2019 Recruiting Thanksgiving Blitz

It's obvious when we say, "the coaches know more then we do" regarding what their needs are in the 2019 class.  We (the common folk) are concerned that there won't be enough spots for high profile recruits that decide late they want to be a Wolverine.   It's clear, the coaches don't share that concern.
The best examples of this strategy is a recent commitment and new offer.  Amauri Pesek-Hickson is a talented athlete out of Kansas City.   He has a huge upside but wasn't even rated a few weeks ago and his only other football offer was Missouri State.  24/7 rates him the 927th player in the nation.  This isn't a reflection on AP-H's talent or upside, this an example the coaches are still open to taking players outside of the few remaining high profile guys.

The next example came last night when Michigan offered 2019 Canton, MI DE Darius Robinson.   Darius is a talented DE and has offers from Colorado, Syracuse, Maryland, and Rutgers. The Wolverines seem very deep at DE, so this was a head scratcher.  Michigan offered him last night as a TE.

With all that above information, lets still get excited about all the high profile recruits!!
  • Zach Harrison the #3 player in the nation who happens to live in Columbus is still trending to Michigan.  The latest news is that Sam Webb put in a CB for him to Ann Arbor yesterday.  Sam was on of the last hold outs and has publicly said, he wouldn't put a CB without solid information he is heading to A2.   That happened yesterday.  Zach plans to enroll in January, so he will have to decide soon.  Yes, please!
  • George Karlaftis is a 5 star DE to 24/7 (4 star to the composite) that lives in another home town of a Big Ten program, West Lafayette, IN.  George picked his home town Purdue over Ann Arbor this past summer.   Many believe his head is in Ann Arbor but his heart is at Purdue.   Jeff Brohm Purdue's head coach is rumored to be ready to take the Louisville job as quickly as Monday or Tuesday.   Some insiders believe that move alone could push Big George to Ann Arbor.  We will see.
  • Quavaris Crouch is a 5 star RB/LB who had his best official visit was to Ann Arbor, but will that still be enough to pull him away from the South?  He officially visited Tennessee and still has a trip to Clemson planned.  He is planning to announce on January 5th during an all star game.   So Michigan most likely will go through the early signing period without knowing Crouch's plans.
  • Trevor Keegan, 4 star Tackle from Illinois.  Trevor took a surprise visit to Ann Arbor last week during the week.  Sounds like he wanted to see practice and how Coach Ed Warinner coached the OLine.  Trevor has been a Michigan lean for some time and hopefully the Wolverines will get his commit soon.  He is a very important recruit.
  • Kyle Ford, a 5 star WR from CA has Michigan in is top 5.   Many believe this is a very long shot and that Kyle will pick USC.  The USC coaching situation may change his mind if there is a change.
Others still considering Michigan:

-Kalen DeLoach 4 star LB from Florida still interested in Michigan but a FSU commit.

-Tommy Eichenberg 4 star ILB from Cleveland, Michigan just offered and he does have an OSU offer as well.

-Dawand Jones 3 star 6'8 360 pound OT, just visited last weekend and plans to make a December decision.  Jones has become a very hot recruit lately with a number of programs trying to get his commitment in the early signing period.

-Cornelius Johnson 4 star WR from CT, not much information from him lately.

Michigan really needs another offensive tackle and an outside WR in this class.   Also any 5 star guys that want to come to Ann Arbor!

Michigan Tuesday: Welcomes Another 4 Star CB

Don Brown is building something special in Ann Arbor and if your a defensive player you are taking notice.  Jalen Perry (6'1 188) a 4 star CB from Georgia took notice and wants to play in Don Brown's system and get a degree from Michigan.

“It’s the athletics and the academics combined at Michigan,” said Perry. “They have the no. 1 public institution in the country. Their team is ranked in the top four teams. Their coaches do a great job preparing their players to play. Their defensive coordinator, Coach (Don) Brown, is one of the best to do it. He has so much knowledge of the game and of defense. Coach Zordich is the corners coach. I have a great relationship with him. I can really tell that he knows how to teach the position. He knows the game. I like how he coaches his guys. So, all of those things kind of made me kind of fall for Michigan.”

Jalen was committed to Georgia until last month and has offers from a ton of the top programs like: Alabama, Florida, FSU, ND, Stanford, Clemson, Auburn, Ohio State, Oklahoma and others.

Welcome Jalen, I'm looking forward to seeing you in coverage!

Rooms are getting tight at the Inn for the 2019 class.  With the hopes of additions of recruits like 5 star Zach Harrison, George Karlaftis, and 4 star OT Trevor Keegan.  Also a WR and 1 more LB.  (Crouch is still 100% crystal balls to Clemson and will make his announcement on 1/5 at the Army All American Game)

Michigan has 26 commits with NSD about a month away.  We do expect Eric Gray to decommit at some point, which means that number is actually 25.

---------

I have a couple things to get off my chest:

  • To Big Ten:  Make sure you have your highest rated officials for the Michigan - OSU game this weekend.  Also double check to make sure they are not public fans of OSU or Michigan.    Try to be better then you have been in the past.   Nobody expects you to be a first class organization, why don't you surprise us and give it a try.

  • Media:  Stop trying to make news by putting Higdon in a corner about guaranteeing a win.   This is just plain stupid, report the news don't create it.
--------

No further news on Chase for Saturday.  Jimmy said they will continue to evaluate him prior to Saturday.   Berkley was back in the building on Monday but has been ruled out for Saturday.   If he has a concussion, he should not be participating in meetings.

Kareem Walker has been at a CC in Kansas and will now finish his playing career at Mississippi State.  Where former PSU OC Joe Moorhead is the head coach.  Good luck to Kareem!

Michigan Monday: Early Look at OSU and Michigan Basektball Wins A Tourney

Jessica Hill, AP
John Beilein's club looked much different in the Northeast then they did at the Crisler Center for its first two games.  Michigan is now the leader in the Big East with wins over Villanova and Providence.   Michigan took care of  George Washington on Saturday and took on a young talented Providence team on Sunday for the Tournament Championship.  The Wolverines started quickly, let Providence back in the game, and then went on a run just before half-time and never looked back.

If this team can shoot the ball they are going to be hard to beat with that defense.  On Saturday, they shot well and Sunday they didn't.   When that happens they look to their 7 foot starter John Teske who had a career high of 17 points in the game.   Super Freshman Iggy Brazdeikis also added 20 on some nice drives with both hands.

Michigan plays Chattanooga on Friday and then NC comes to town a week from Wednesday. After North Carolina, Michigan has a few early December Big Ten games against Purdue and Northwestern before they finish off the non-conference.

Michigan is now the 2018 Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Tip Off Classic Champion - Raise another banner!

---

Michigan also welcomed a new 2019 recruit Amauri Pesek-Hickson who is from Overland Park, Kansas.  If you think Michigan can find diamonds in the rough in KC like Ronnie Bell,  AP-H is another example.  Amauri stopped playing football his sophomore and junior years to focus on basketball and just started playing again during his senior year.   That is pretty much a death sentence for recruiters as the junior year is pretty much the most important year to get noticed.   Many guys that have great senior year can go un-noticed.  That was the case for AP-H, during his senior year he had 1,158 all-purpose yards (563 rushing on 76 carries, 595 receiving on 38 catches) with 14 total touchdowns.

If you didn't know, Michigan has a scout in KC (Jimmy's brother-in-law) who found Ronnie Bell and I assume also found AP-H.   This is a Don Brown recruit and AP-H is expected to play on defense as a Viper or another LB.  He is 6'3 and 210 pounds and for sure heading for a red shirt.  Welcome big man!

---

Winovich Injury Status?

We really don't know and I'm not sure we will until 12:00 on Saturday.  From Jimmy's report on Saturday the XRay and Scans were negative.  Chase also posted on IG that basically, the reports of his demise are overstated and he will be back.   Which still leaves a ton of room for interpretation.
Jimmy has his presser today around noon and I don't expect to hear too much of an update on him.  Solomon also went out on Saturday and his status is also unknown at this point.

JBB left after a couple of snaps on Saturday and is clearly still working through something.   His status is still TBD as well.

Early Look at OSU:

10-1

Best Win: @ PSU
Only Loss: Purdue

Total Offense: #2 at 41.6 points per game
Total Defense: #75 at 25 points per game

It's clear OSU strength vs. weakness.  OSU's neighbors on the total defense list include Minnesota, Memphis, and Middle Tennessee.

Line:  Michigan -3.5

Same Game Different Year

David Guralnick, Detnews
The Indiana program has taken Michigan to OT the last two trips to Bloomington.  The prior trip to the Big House,  Michigan won a snowy 10 point game.  Many Michigan fans haven't seen a win by Indiana in Ann Arbor in their lifetime.   Yesterday, it was an ugly 11 point win.

You look at the Wolverines offensive numbers and wonder if this was even a ball game.  Total Yards 507 (250 passing, 257 running), 25 first downs, almost 36 minutes in possession time.

That is why we do Cheers and Jeers so we can look outside the numbers!

Cheers:
  • Michigan won the game
  • Defense got stops when they needed to
  • Game ball goes to Moody for going 6-6 on field goals
  • Gray finishes his career at the BH with a sack
  • Higdon had some great 4 yard runs, when they looked like losses
  • It didn't snow
Jeers:
  • I thought the offensive play calling was atrocious
  • Harbaugh's calls at the end of the 1st half were awful
  • Red Zone?
  • The BIG officials were terrible - that kick of the ball should have been a delay of game
  • I love me some Don Brown, but how in the hell do you blitz Bush on 3rd down when the IU QB has been beating you running and passing up the middle?
  • Nordin was sick and has the shanks
  • Indiana played dirty, that IU tackle that hit Winovich on the ground should be suspended
  • Winovich's injury is still up in the air - early reports are the xray's were negative
  • Edwards injury was terrible and he is being treated for a concussion

I watched Ohio State - Maryland before the Michigan game and watched a talented team that didn't want to be in Maryland and played like it.   I thought to myself,  I'm glad Michigan won't play like that today.  The Wolverines didn't play as poorly as the Buckeyes but they did play poorly.

The Michigan defense gave up 385 yards (195 passing and 190 on the ground) and looked ill prepared for Indiana's offense all game.   They even struggled to get lined up on many plays.  The middle of the field was wide open all day and for some reason, Michigan didn't ever adjust.   Penalties on 3rd down to keep drives alive, is like going to the Dentist for a root canal.

The Michigan offense looked like a high school coach was calling the plays.  Very predictable and not just vanilla it was French vanilla.   Then Pep or Jimmy decides to keep the ball moving they need to run Patterson.   Which if hurt would have killed the Wolverines chances for next week.  What is the deal with the Red Zone?  Yes, there were a couple of bad throws and a drop, but first and second down calls were just give-a-ways by the Wolverines.

Outside of ND, this might have been the most frustrating game of the year, which is not a great sign going into next week.   With that said, we know the team that struggled in Maryland and the team that struggled in the red zone in Ann Arbor won't be the same teams that show up at noon in CBus.

Let's hope the news on Winovich continues to be positive and he can play next weekend.  It would be a huge loss if he doesn't even make the trip or is in street clothes.

Indiana Preview

Time: 4:00
Location: Big House
Weather: 34 80% snow
TV: Fox
Stream: Fox2Go
Line: Mich -28

The Revenge Tour continues!  Many might question that as a 28 point favorite, but the Wolverines didn't beat IU last year in regulation.   It took OT for a win in Bloomington.    Looks like its going to be cold for senior day and Michigan will have to guard against looking ahead to a trip to CBus after Thanksgiving.

Tale of the Tape
IU RB Coach vs. Mich RB Coach = IU
Michigan Everything else vs. IU Everything else = Michigan

Even though IU's former head coach is now OSU offensive coordinator things are pretty much the same for the Hoosiers.  Which leads to a question:  Does playing Indiana this week help the Michigan defense against OSU next week?  The answer is yes!

Both teams like the spread with dink and dunk passes with the hopes an athlete finds some space for a TD.  Payton Ramsey IU QB averages 7.5 yards per target which ranks last in the Big Ten, Dwayne Haskins averages 7.9 and is ranked 2nd to last.   Can someone tell me how Haskins is in the Heisman race for throwing screens and slats all day?

Yell, Beat OSU if ……………….
  • Shea Patterson leaves the field after the game 100% heathy
  • Higdon last game in the BH has 150+ yards rushing
  • Michigan gets a ton of snaps for Peters and Milton
  • Tarik Black get his first TD in over a year
Yell, What's the deal with Indiana?...…………
  • If this game is too close for comfort
  • Michigan suffers some injuries
  • The Wolverines are clearly looking past the Hoosiers
  • This game reminds you of the John O'Korn snow game

IU is one of those teams that has always played Michigan hard but never wins.   So much so that Jimmy hired Greg Frey a few years ago.  That experiment didn't last long.   Michigan's defense will see on ton of slants and runs when the defense is spread out.   If Gary and Winovich can get pressure, it will be a long day for the Hoosiers.   Michigan's offense should be fine as long as they don't go too vanilla.  I expect Winovich to have a crazy senior day for his last game in the Big House, look for something like 3 sacks and 3 TFL's.

Indiana reminds me of Maryland, a team with talent that will probably have a couple big plays, but not enough for win.  Michigan's biggest competitor in this game is Michigan.  Play well, win the game comfortably, and stay healthy.

Michigan 41 IU 10

Big Ten Preview Week 12

This is a strange week for Big Ten Football as there really isn't a premier games with a full schedule.  So for the game of the week, we pick a strange one.

Big Ten Game of the Week:

Northwestern @ Minnesota (Minn -1):  Northwestern is heading to Indy as the Big Ten West Champ.  Minnesota is 5-5 and looking to get bowl eligible.   So I guess Vegas isn't loving the Wildcats as they are a underdog to the Golden Gophers in chilly Minneapolis.  Northwestern is the better team and does play well on the road.   NW 23 Minn 21

MSU @ Nebraska (MSU -2):  MSU laid down for Ohio State last weekend as they let a punter beat the mighty Spartans.  Mark Dan is getting drilled by ESPN off the field for not vetting questionable recruits and his team is getting drilled on it.  I don't believe the Spartans will travel well and will get run out of Lincoln.   Nebraska 28 MSU 14

Ohio State @ Maryland (OSU -14.5): OSU is the better team, but will they be looking ahead to the Wolverines?  This is a trap game and OSU will struggle early but win late.  OSU 31 Maryland 17

Penn State @ Rutgers (PSU -27):  PSU Big.   PSU 51 Rutgers 10

Iowa @ Illinois (Iowa -14.5):Iowa is the better team.  Iowa 32 Illinois 21

Wisconsin @ Purdue (Purdue -4.5):  Both teams had big plans this year.  Purdue might lose their head coach.  Wisconsin still plays pretty good defense.  Purdue 21 Wisconsin 20

Michigan Basketball Thursday: Wow!

Matt Slocum, AP
Not many blogs or even Michigan newspaper reporters were writing much about the National Championship rematch prior to last nights game.  Villanova who lost a ton of guys to the NBA were playing at home and ranked #8 in the country.   Michigan is ranked #18 but had two head scratching performances to start the year.   For example Holy Cross was beating the Wolverines at half-time after the Wolverines struggled to score 18 points.

Many had the expectation the Wolverines would struggle in this one and I was squarely in that camp.  Then I turned on the TV at 6:30 and was blown away by a Michigan team that played suffocating defense and was very efficient on offense.   Michigan started the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back to an easy 73-46 victory.  The Michigan Revenge Tour isn't just for football

Simpson is crazy good at the point.  He plays unbelievable defense and can beat anyone off the dribble.  If he adds a jumper, he will be a NBA player.   Matthews finally played the game we were expecting from him.   If he doesn't settle for 3's and keeps his jumper in the mid range, he will get 20 points a night.   Those efforts weren't a surprise, what I couldn't believe was the defense from Brazdeikis. The true freshman had to guard Villanova's fifth-year senior Eric Paschal all night and played some of the best defense I have ever seen a freshman play against a man that was much wider them him physically.  He made the 5th year forward look like the freshman on 3-14 shooting on the night.

Ignas not only played well on the defensive side of the court, he added 18 points to his final stat line.  The kid isn't scared and will be a future college basketball star.

I know I have said this a million times, but how good does it feel having two of the best coaches in the country coaching Michigan Basketball and Football programs?  I can't think of a better combo of head coaches at any program in the country.   Things are getting back to normal around here and it feels pretty damn good.

Wolverine Wednesday: Senior Day Isn't Just For Seniors Anymore

Wow, this season has gone very quickly.   It's hard to believe it's week 12 and this Saturday is Michigan's last home game.  Which has been classically called "Senior Day" for the final game in the Big House for 4th & 5th year seniors.

The list of seniors include:
  • Reuben Jones
  • Jared Wrangler
  • Jacob West
  • Chase Winovich
  • Brendan White
  • Matt Mitchell
  • Karan Higdon
  • Tyree Kinnel
  • Joe Hewlett
  • Brandon Watson
  • Jordan Glasgow
  • Berkley Edwards
  • Louis Grodman
  • Ken Ferris
  • Casey Hughes
  • Joseph Files
  • Andrew Robinson
  • Noah Furbush
  • Nolan Ulizio
  • Jon Runyan
  • Juwann Bushell-Beatty
  • Grant Newsome
  • Zach Gentry
  • Jack Dunaway
  • Grant Perry
  • Bryan Mone
  • Lawrence Marshall
  • John Luby
Of course a number above players are seniors but can be welcomed back for a 5th year if they have a red shirt year available.

Michigan is also going to lose a few juniors to the NFL draft:
  • Devin Bush was just ranked #6 on Mel Kiper's Big Board.   Many expect him to turn pro.
  • Rashan Gary was ranked #8 and is also expected to be headed to the NFL draft
  • Shea Patterson per insiders is expected to check his draft status and then return for another year at Michigan.
  • Khaleke Hudson is a guy that could surprise many by heading to the NFL Draft, I think he will check his draft status and then figure out his next move.

-Michigan's Football Banquet will now be in Crisler on 12/9 which will let more fans attend.

-Shea is #3 in ESPN's QBR

-Expected visitors this weekend include Michigan RB commits Zach Charbonnet and Eric Gray.  Zach just got a bump in 24/7's ranking and is now in 5 star territory.

-Michigan Basketball plays at Villanova tonight

Maryland’s distilleries are making spirits bright

It’s never been easier to toast with a locally-made Maryland spirit. As a state with one of the fastest-growing rates of distilleries, Maryland is home to more than two dozen unique companies that exceed the expectations of even the most critical palettes. We’re excited to celebrate these innovative artisans during November as part of Maryland Spirits Month.

Michigan Tuesday: Sad For Caris

You have probably heard by now that Caris LeVert suffered a horrendous leg injury last night.  Before the injury Caris was having the best year of his career by averaging over 18 points a game.   I hope his injury can be repaired successfully and will be stronger after he rehabs.

  • Michigan Basketball continues to struggle and was down at halftime to Holy Cross on Saturday.  They had a big bounce back in the second half and won easily.   Michigan travels to Villanova tomorrow for a NC game rematch.

  • Paye and Solomon will play on Saturday.  Hill continues to be in the concussion protocol and I don't expect he will play.

  • Northwestern will make its first appearance in the Big Ten Championship game, I hope there is another team from the East that will make its first appearance.

  • Rich Rod was seen on Alabama's campus on Monday.

  • Ohio State has drained it's mirror lake two weeks prior to the Michigan game.   So it's now a muddy hole.  The reason they drained it so no students jump into the pond.  A student drowned in that pond in 2015.

  • Michigan - IU Kickoff is set at 4:00 on Fox, which means the game should last until 9:00.

  • Michigan is favored by 27.5

  • IU RB Coach Mike Hart has been nominated for the Broyles Award.  His name seems familiar? :-)

Main Street Maryland program celebrates 20 years of economic investment

Maryland's Main Street communities are the perfect holiday shopping destination. This year, Small Business Saturday takes place on November 24, and there are now 30 Main Streets to visit throughout the state. The two newest additions - the Town of New Market and the City of Laurel - were designated by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development last month.

Michigan Monday: The Upside, Injuries, and an Early Look at IU

The media likes to say, "Michigan is peaking at the right time".  Which is a pretty accurate assessment with the #1 defense and Shea Patterson playing well under center.   What's exciting about this team is that the defense is much closer to the ceiling then the offense.

The Rutgers game is an example of that.  Michigan didn't put anything new on tape and Shea had the best performance of his college career.   Michigan's #1 rusher had less then 50 yards but still scored 2 TD's.   What I have really enjoyed this season is Shea's accuracy and that he doesn't turn the ball over.   After the ND game, he has done a great job at protecting the ball.

We also have to "call out" the offense line, who for many years have been one of the main reasons Michigan has struggled on offense.  This unit has greatly improved and has taken leaps and bounds forward.   Michigan is finally playing that downhill style that Jimmy loves.

I believe this offense is still running at about 80% of its capabilities.   Here is why:
  • Michigan hasn't put too many RPO's on tape this season and we know that is all the rage in football.
  • Tarik Black has been back for two games but hasn't seen too many targets yet
  • How about the slot position?  Grant Perry is losing snaps to Martin and Bell as that position is playing very well.
  • Evans is now just starting to look like 2017 Evans
  • Gentry has 28 catches and could easily have 20 more
  • Screens!  Michigan could be killing it on RB screens but have only ran a few all year
  • The read option pass!
  • Having to game plan to cover guys like Black, DPJ, and Collins has to be a nightmare
Those are a few reasons, I believe Jimmy is keeping 20% of this offense in the vault for the trip to CBus and anything after that.

Injuries:  Insiders are saying the following:

-Hill is in the concussion protocol and very questionable for Saturday
-Paye is expected back on Saturday
-Metellus is expected back on Saturday
-McCafferty had surgery and is out for the rest of the season

Early Look at Indiana Football:

5-5
Best win: Virginia
Worst Lost: Minnesota

They pass for 255 yards per game ranked 44th
Rush for 155 ranked 82nd
They score: 28 points per game ranked 78th
Defense gives up: 30 points which ranks 84th

To get bowl eligible IU needs a win over Michigan or Purdue.  So Purdue.

A few thoughts from the weekend:

  • The MSU offensive performance on Saturday against a questionable OSU defense was pitiful.  It was clear they had the wrong QB in and didn't have a game plan.

  • The new Louisville opening will be very interesting for Michigan for two reasons, 1 - that is Purdue's head coach Jeff Brohm's job to lose or turndown.  2- If Jeff does decide to go home, that could mean great things for Michigan and 5 star George Karlaftis.

Business Trip

Julio Cortez, AP
The Michigan Football program was on a business trip the last two days.  This wasn't a stop on the Revenge Tour, it was just another football game against an over-matched opponent.   Michigan did what they needed to do and destroyed Rutgers and kept Shea Patterson healthy.

Michigan wasn't great but they were good enough to do the job.  The temperature was low, the wind was blowing, and Michigan is leaving NJ with its undefeated Big Ten record intact.   Like we predicted, MSU couldn't get the job done in East Lansing as they rolled over like a tired dog and showed the Buckeyes their belly in the 4th quarter.  If there was a machine that could read your most deep thoughts, I'm sure the readout would say Mark Dantonio wasn't going to do a damn thing to help the Wolverines win anything.   On to the Cheers and Jeers...……..……..

Cheers:
  • Higdon getting over a 1000 yards on the season
  • Shea Patterson playing well
  • Great pass protection from the Oline
  • Tru Wilson and Chris Evans
  • Getting the job done!
Jeers:
  • Hill has a concussion
  • Paye has a arm injury
  • Uche seems to have an ankle
  • Josh Metellus has a soft tissue issue and didn't play
  • Brad Hawkins has been involved in a ton of big plays this year
  • 80 yard TD run
  • Poor run blocking by the offensive line
  • Higdon's 100 yard streak is over
  • Solomon was sick

Michigan had 453 yards of offense and Rutgers had 252.  Both teams rushed for 193 yards and that is about 100 yards over the average Michigan gives up.

Gary seemed to be enjoying playing in front of his friends and family but other then that, the Wolverines were just a bit flat.   Which makes a ton of sense coming off the 3 high pressure games they have played over the last 4 weeks.   The strong QB play from Shea Patterson, kept this game from being a little too close for comfort.   If not for that 80 yard mistake, the Wolverines defense would of had a shutout.

On to Indiana.

Rutgers Preview

Time: 3:30
Location: Highpoint.com Stadium
Weather: 40 No Rain
TV: BTN
Stream: BTN To Go
Line:  Michigan -40

If last week was the most scouted game by yours truly, this one is just the opposite.  I haven't watched a minute of Rutgers Football this season because, Rutgers Football.   Remember when they were good and playing important games against Louisville in the Big East?  Or when their head coach thought staying at Rutgers was better then taking the Michigan job?  Fun Times.

Tale of the Tape
Michigan Everything vs. Rutgers Everything = Michigan

Rutgers and Maryland have made a great case for them to be retracted from the Big Ten.  The expansion to get the DC and NYC TV markets from afar seems to be a disaster.   Before Maryland joined the Big 10 their athletic department was bankrupt.  Don't be fooled that one of the reasons they brought back DJ Durkin had to be money related.   Rutgers has been terrible in pretty much every sport.  Fun Times!

Michigan will take a break from the Revenge Tour, even though Hoke did lose in NJ once.  Since then this game has been a disaster for the Scarlett Knights.   That trend will continue this weekend as Michigan is a 40 point favorite on the road against the one win Scarlett Knights.

Ask someone if these tickets really should be free? if...…………..
  • Higdon gets 200 yards by halftime
  • Peters and Milton play the entire second half
  • The NJ kids on the team play well
  • Nordin gets his confidence back
  • Everyone stays healthy
Wonder out loud if Michigan fans outnumber Rutgers fans if...…
  • Michigan doesn't want to be there
  • The team sleep walks like they did against Northwestern
  • The starters are in late in the 3rd Quarter

This is one of those stat filler games, for example Higdon is 37 yards away from 1000 yards this season.   He probably will get that in the first series.    Patterson hasn't had a 300 yard passing game yet, he could get that during this game, unless Michigan rushes for 600 yards.

I'm interested in seeing Milton getting some real snaps and Peters gaining confidence just in case something bad happens.   I would also like to see who might step up at RB next year.  The NJ kids will be excited to play in front of family and friends.   Stay heathy and have fun!

Michigan 51 Rutgers 6

Big Ten Week 11 Preview

Michigan doesn't  hold the title of the best Big 10 game of the weekend and a case could be made its the worst.  With Michigan putting up 78 points the last time they traveled to NJ.  The biggest game for Wolverines fans is still instate as the Buckeyes roll into East Lansing.   That is your Big Ten Game of the Week!

OSU @ MSU (OSU -3.5): Both teams have been on a strange journey this season with issues on and off the field.  MSU seems to play its best when they have the least amount of starters available.  OSU has struggled on defense pretty much all year long but still only has one loss.  OSU's pass offense has been solid as Haskins will screen you death like they did against PSU.   MSU wants to win a low scoring game by stopping the run.  OSU hasn't really run the ball well until last week against a poor Nebraska defense.  As much as I would love to see MSU win, I think OSU pulls it out in the 4th.   OSU 24 MSU 20

Wisconsin @ PSU (PSU-9):  I thought Michigan had a difficult Big Ten Schedule, I think Penn State will win that award this year.  Both teams are beat up and trending the wrong way.  I like PSU at home but it will be closer then we think.   PSU 17 Wisconsin 14

Northwestern @ Iowa (Iowa -11):  If Northwestern can win this game they can M00N walk to the Big Ten West Title.  The issue is Iowa plays its best football at home and will win this game.
Iowa 28 Northwestern 21

Purdue @ Minnesota (Pur -12):  The Boilermakers are the better team but they don't play well on the road either.  I like Purdue's offense over Minnesota's defense (unless there is a blizzard).  Purdue 31 Minnesota 17

Illinois @ Nebraska (Neb -17) The Cornhuskers have won 2 games and a 3 score favorite in this one.  I think they will run the score up since they won't be going to a bowl game.  Missing two extra weeks of practice for bowl prep hurts a young team.   Nebraska 41 Illinois 10

Maryland @ IU (Pick em):  The only reason to watch this game is to scout IU for next weekend.  I like IU at home over a Maryland team that is probably happy to be out of town for the weekend.  IU 38 Maryland 34

Wolverine Wednesday: Kurt Taylor Transfers & Michigan BBall Starts The Season

Michigan has a ton of depth at the RB position.  The only RB expected to head to the NFL next season is senior Karan Higdon.  Michigan also has 2 high profile RB's committed in the next class (even though Gray is very shaky).   Not to mention recruiting a 5 star athlete that plays RB and LB who was on campus this weekend.

Looking up at a depth chart this season that includes Braylon's brother, Kurt Taylor decided to transfer from the Wolverines this week.   This does not come as a surprise as students and fans have been seeing him outside the stadium an hour before kickoff and working out at the IM building.  My guess is, he hasn't been with the team for some time now.

He seems like a good kid and we wish him well at his next school.

Michigan Basketball beat Norfolk State last night and it looked like the first game of the season.  Michigan shot 36% and was 6-26 from 3 point range.  Here are a few thoughts from Game #1:

Michigan's defense was the difference in the game.  Teske is a real force at Center, blocking shots and causing missed shots.  You can see he is really improving.

Michigan's freshman seem talented even though most got in late in the game.  Brazdeikis played 22 minutes and had 12 points.  He has a very nice upside.

I also thought Livers played a solid game off the bench and really made a statement to start.

Michigan can't shoot.  Yes, it maybe first game jitters and this always seems to improve under Coach B, but this team is going to struggle on offense for awhile until they can knock down open jumpers.

Free throws is still a problem.  Michigan was 13-29, just terrible.

Charles Matthews still isn't ready for the NBA.  I was hoping to see a huge step forward from Matthews.   He still has issues with his shot, he was 0-4 from 3 and 0-5 from the free throw line.

Michigan plays Villanova in a week and North Carolina in 3 weeks, they will need to improve if they are going to be competitive in those games.

Congrats to Coach B on 800 wins!

Michigan Tuesday: #2 QB

Michigan lost its #2 QB before the most important game of the season for a #2 QB - Rutgers.   You could have even made an agreement for McCafferty to start against the Scarlet Knights.    With his broken collarbone now he won't even make the trip to New Jersey.

That leaves true freshman Joe Milton and Outback Bowl starter Brandon Peters.  Both have positives and negatives to being the #2 QB.

Milton - has only been at Michigan a few months and probably doesn't have the greatest grasp of the offense.  Jimmy would also like to keep his red shirt.  Milton has played in 1 game and can play in 3 more while saving his RS.   I expect he will play against Rutgers.

Peters - knows the offense and has starting experience.  He was going to be the starter before Patterson rode into town.  Many believe he could transfer next year and needs some good tape to transfer to a top program.   I wonder where his confidence level is after being the expected starter to 3rd or 4th string.

If Saturday goes as planned, I expect both QB's will get a number of snaps.  One for the future of Michigan's program and another for the future of West Virginia's program?

  • Tonight is opening night for Michigan Basketball.  Two Banners will go up - Big Ten Tournament Champion and Final 4.   8:30 Norfolk State BTN.  It's also the opening round of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament

  • If your watching the recruitment of 5 star Zach Harrison, the crystal balls in his recruitment went from Michigan at 10% to leading at 54% yesterday.   Sam Webb said there wasn't any "event" to create all these CB's for Michigan.   Mom seems to be the biggest hurdle.

  • 2020 4 star DL Denver Warren decommitted from Michigan on Monday as well.  Denver said, Michigan didn't have room on the defensive line for 2020 now.  Which seems strange so early.  Sam Webb says Michigan is still recruiting DL for 2019 and 2020.   Sam also said that Warren decommitting as nothing to do Zach Harrison.

Michigan Monday: Lands 2 Commits on Sunday & An Early Look at Rutgers

If your considering being part of the Michigan program and happened to be in the Big House on Saturday, it must have been difficult to leave unimpressed.   The Wolverines played like Winovich's hair was on fire and a number of recruits took notice.

2019 CB/WR Athlete Mike Sainristil who recently de-committed from Virginia Tech, committed to the Wolverines this weekend.  Mike visited Ann Arbor for the BBQ and everyone but VA Tech knew he was going to commit to Michigan at some point.  Mike is from Don Brown territory in Massachusetts and is 5'9 175 pounds.  As we know,  Jimmy loves him some athletes that can play different positions.   At Michigan he could play WR, RB, CB, or even Safety.

The services have Mike ranked as a 3 star player across the board, except ESPN who has him as the #1 Player in MA and a 4 star athlete.  His offer list is one you would expect from a school in MA:  VA Tech, BC, Rutgers, Wisconsin, UNC, Ole Miss, and some MAC schools.  This is also a bit of a recruiting style change for the Wolverines who have seen Penn State and Purdue have great success with shorter elite athletes this year.

It's clear Michigan would like to have most of its class if not all of its class signed in December.   Which means the Wolverines want to go 5 Star hunting with needs still at OT, LB, and Outside WR.  Either way the rooms at the Inn are starting to get very full for the 2019 class.

2020 RB Tim Baldwin RB joined the future class as well.   Tim is rated as a 4 star to 24/7 and a 3 star on the composite.  He is 5'11 and 187 pounds and from Ashburn, VA.  His early offers included Michigan, BC, Maryland, and Charlotte.   This was his second trip to Ann Arbor and this time sealed the deal for the talented RB.  Tim is the first RB commit to the 2020 class that now has 6 commits.

Welcome to both Mike and Tim!

  • Look at all these rumors:  Confidence continues to grow around the recruitment to Ann Arbor for 5 Star Zach Harrison.  Quavaris Crouch of course visited this weekend and there was a rumor he was in the locker room singing with the team: "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine".   We will see for both guys.   Harrison wants to enroll early so he will need to make a decision in the next month or so.

  • Rutgers kick is at 3:30 on BTN

  • If MSU beat OSU on Saturday at Noon and Michigan beats Rutgers and IU, that would put Michigan into the Big Ten Title game in Indy.  Dantonio still wants to win that game right?

Too Early Look at Rutgers:

Rutgers started off the year with a win against Texas State and have lost 8 in a row.   Though they did play Northwestern tough 18-15.  Wisconsin beat them last week 31-17.  They also had to dismiss a RB recently due to a plot-to-murder charge.

Offense is consistent:

Pass for 152 a game which is 119th in the country
Run for 124 a game which is 114th
They score: 14 points a game which is 130th

Defense gives up 33 with is 99th

Line: Michigan -39

On a side note, how is that Big Ten expansion going for Maryland and Rutgers?  I hope the  TV revenue from those markets are worth it.

If we are doing side notes:  Since ND is sort of in the ACC, Shouldn't they have to play Clemson in the ACC Championship game?

Total Destruction

David Guralnick, Detroit News
Everyone knew this was coming and when everyone knows something is going to happen it usually doesn't.  The line even jumped 2 points on Friday as Vegas thought this might happen.  It did on Saturday and Michigan beat its third ranked opponent in a row.   It's hard to put into words the domination as the Wolverines crushed the Nittany Lions on both sides of the ball.   Penn State looked like they didn't have any game plan for Michigan's #1 ranked defense and struggled all day just scoring one late TD.   It was a great win and I don't know about you, but things are starting to feel normal again.

Was the game perfect? It wasn't so we go to the Cheers and Jeers.

Cheers:
  • Don "F'ing" Brown
  • Michigan's pass rush
  • +3 in turnovers
  • Higdon another big day!
  • Shea running the offense
  • No rust from the two weeks off
  • Welcome back Tarik and Rashan officially
  • 403 total yards of offense
  • 186 total yards for PSU
Jeers:
  • Nordin was slow the to ball all afternoon, which caused a blocked punt
  • Back-up QB McCaffrey's broken collarbone
  • Thought the play calling got way too conservative in the 2nd qtr.
  • 9 penalties for 80 yards
  • No shutout :-(
I feel terrible for Dylan McCaffrey but that is why you don't have Shea in there late with him running the ball.   Hopefully he can heal up and be ready for the bowl game/playoffs.

Don Brown gets the game ball and I thought the offense and play calling was good at times.   I didn't understand why Michigan kept running into the strength of Penn State's defense so much, which was killing drives in the 2nd and early in the 3rd quarter.    Michigan does have an issue with field goals that they will need to fix.   If that block didn't have so many penalties, that could have been a momentum changer.

The meat of the schedule is now over and the Wolverines will have to keep their focus with a trip to Rutgers and IU at home before they head to a Big Ten East Championship game against Ohio State in Columbus.   Unless MSU can pull an upset in East Lansing next weekend.   :-)

Great win!

Penn State Preview

Time: 3:45
Location: Big House
Weather: 47 and no rain
TV: ESPN
Stream: ESPN App
Line: Michigan -10.5

This series lately have been blowouts for each side.   Two years ago Penn State gets blown out at the Big House then last year Penn State returned the favor in Happy Valley.  Both teams this year have been in the top 10, with the Wolverines currently #5 and Penn State #14.  ESPN has tabbed this weekend as Statement Saturday.

Tale of the Tape

Michigan OLine vs. PSU DLine = Penn State
Michigan DLine vs. PSU OLine = Michigan
Michigan Pass D vs. PSU Pass O = Michigan
Scrambling QB vs. Michigan D = Penn State
Coaching = Michigan
Intangibles = Michigan
QB Play = Push

Penn State has struggled this year in pretty much every game they have played.  They miss Barley, Joe Moorhead, and others that left the program for greener pastures.  Penn State WR's have been struggling with drops and McSorely is really their offense with scramble runs and completing passes when their WR 's actually catch the ball.  Their defense is decent when they know what's coming.  For example, if you run at them on first down, they will stop you.  If your able to confuse them, they are prone to mistakes and penalties.  For example, OSU got back into the game by throwing nothing but screens and Penn State couldn't stop them.

Yell, The Revenge Tour continues if...……………
  • Michigan D can stop McSorely
  • Michigan can run the ball with Higdon
  • Michigan WR's have a big day
  • Shea protects the ball and gets some first down with his legs
  • Nordin hits all his field goals
Wonder out loud how that just happened if...………………..
  • McSorely is running wild
  • Michigan has been reading how good they are for 2 weeks
  • Michigan's offense is struggling in the red zone
  • Somebody on the PSU Staff has Don Brown kryptonite
  • PSU receivers catch the ball
The two things I worry about on Saturday is McSorley scrambling to keep drives alive and Michigan reading ESPN for the past two weeks on how the Wolverines are going to the playoffs.   Penn State has talent as James Franklin is a good recruiter.   Michigan let KJ Halmer out of the state and he is Penn State's #1 downfield weapon and a great returner.   Keeping him contained will be important for momentum and Michigan's success in this game.

Michigan will need to spy McSorely with Hudson and that means spying on him at the LOS and not blitzing him.  Michigan's defensive line, should be able to get pressure without having to blitz too often.   I would also love to see Michigan play some Zone but that really isn't what Don Brown likes to do.  McSorely hurt his knee but came back in to win the Iowa game which included a long run.  How that knee healed this week will be important to PSU's success.

I hope the Wolverines offense got some rest and got better over the last two weeks.   If the offense is vanilla that will play right into PSU hands.   I have a feeling that Chris Evans could have a big game. He has struggled this year with his health and a bad fumble against MSU.   I think he could have a highlight game with screens and catching the ball out of the backfield.   I also like Black, DPJ, and Collins to have a big days with yards and TD's.  I expect Michigan's O Line to struggle a bit, so getting the ball out quick will be key.

Michigan 31 Penn State 10
