One local tech company is off to a strong start this year with new employees, new investors, and a new round of funding.
Launched in 2013, Fixt is a Baltimore startup that provides on-demand mobile phone repairs. The company offers an app that, when installed on a smartphone, can detect the device being dropped and damaged and starts the repair by processing a service ticket with Fixt. Founder and CEO Luke Cooper calls the company the “Uber for device replacement.”
In the past three months, the Fells Point business has added three new employees and raised $1.4 million in seed funding – $400,000 more than it expected. The round closed with assistance from major corporate investors, including Walmart board member Jim Cash and Google Wallet founder Jonathan Weiner.
“Fixt is making the process of replacing all broken items more reliable than ever, starting with smartphones and tablets,” said Cooper. “Our diverse and innovative approach is representative of Governor Hogan’s efforts to engage with us and the entrepreneurial community in Maryland.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Fixt offers individual customers the option to pay a one-time repair fee for around $150, or completely replace the broken phone. The decision to repair or replace the device depends on the damage – Fixt handles everything from shattered screens to water damage to software issues.
Companies can purchase monthly insurance plans to cover employees for $3 to $6 each – a convenient solution for those managing dozens to hundreds of devices. It’s no wonder that Johns Hopkins University, Kaiser Permanente, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County are already clients.
“Luke and the Fixt crew remind me of myself – 30 years ago – when I founded Americom. They have the energy and innovation to make this app a really great service,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “Having been an entrepreneur in the tech industry, I never would have imagined that mobile phones would become so advanced. I’m thrilled to see Fixt expanding in Maryland and helping to grow our tech workforce.”
