Michigan Thursday: "You Can Go Your Own Way"

When I heard the next piece of news for transfer season, the Fleetwood Mac song played in my head.

You can go your own way
Go your own way
You can call it
Another lonely day
You can go your own way

This wasn't a surprise at all, as WR Moe Ways announced he will take a graduate year at another program.  Moe saw his playing time decrease as talented WR's entered the program as freshman.    We wish Moe nothing but the best at his next school.

You can go your Moe Ways..................

  • JaRaymond Hall per Sam Webb has received his release from Michigan but is still weighing his options and might end up staying in Ann Arbor.

  • Michigan Basketball struggled on defense last night and got beat handily by NC in the Dean Dome 86-71.   Wagner went for 20.   Time to bring back the 1-3-1!

  • Sounds like ASU is moving forward with hiring ESPN's Herm Edwards as its next head coach.  This would have been a great hire 10 years ago.  I think Herm is a great football guy but not sure this is going to be a good long term fit.  Speaking of ESPN, they continue to struggle and laid off 150 production staff yesterday.

  • Coach Harbaugh and Coach Frey were in home with TE Tommy Tremble last night.   Sounds like Tommy is a big priority and hoping he commits and signs on 12/20.  Tommy visited A2 last weekend.

  • Coach Hamilton was in home with 4 star WR Ja'Mar Chase last night.  Chase visited A2 last weekend.

  • Tennessee is struggling to find its next head coach, they were interested in Purdue's Jeff Brohm yesterday, but couldn't come to terms and now have move on to NC State's Dave Doeren.   Dave is expected to make a decision between NC State and Tennessee today.

  • FSU had to re-schedule its hurricane game for this weekend to become bowl eligible.   The side show is what happens with Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M.   An FSU opening will be a huge one.

Celebrating company milestones in Maryland

It’s been a great year for Maryland Commerce, and an even better year for the Maryland business community. I want to thank you all for everything you’ve done to help make Maryland open for business – our small businesses, large corporations, economic development partners, state agencies, and beyond.

As 2017 comes to an end, join me in honoring the companies celebrating milestone anniversaries throughout the state.

With 135 years, the longest-running milestone in this batch of businesses goes to The Baltimore Life Companies. This Owings Mills-based insurance company has been in business since 1882 and doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon. Integrity, respect, and making a positive difference are three things that this company holds true to this day.

Baltimore Life Companies

Next up is Von Paris Moving & Storage celebrating 125 years. The Von Paris story begins with a German immigrant who began his small business in the Baltimore Metropolitan region. Since 1892, this moving and storage company has expanded to five locations in the area and committed their focus to excellence and quality service.

Von Paris Moving and Storage

Rounding out the 100+ year milestones is Shepherd Electric Supply, the oldest wholesale electrical distributor in the area. For 125 years, the company has provided the most extensive local inventory and served customers in commercial construction and facilities, lighting, government organizations, and more.

Shepherd Electric Supply

Other anniversaries happening around the state include Bell Flowers in Montgomery County (70 years), Celeste Industries in Talbot County (45 years), and Kelly Generator in Calvert County (25 years). Check out additional celebrations in the below photos.

Celeste Industries
Celeste Industries
Thank you to Easton-based Celeste Industries on 45 great years! Featured are employees with 30+ years of service.

We’ll be back in 2018 with even more anniversaries to come. If your company is celebrating a milestone, be sure to send us an email with the details.

Wolverine Wednesday: It's Transfer Season

The regular season is over and bowl practices don't start for a few weeks.   So players have to go to class and be a regular student athlete for a few weeks.   It gives players a lot of time to think about what their future looks like.

Michigan already lost their starting QB from the start of the year to a graduate transfer and now two more players have also decided to play elsewhere.

Drake Harris who came to Michigan with a ton of instate hype as a 4 star WR never really made an impact as injuries pretty much de-railed his career in Ann Arbor.   He has decided to try to play somewhere else next year and I hope his body will allow him to do that.    Drake will graduate from Michigan and do the graduate transfer thing and be able to play next year.

Freshman JaRaymond Hall has also decided to transfer from the program.  This one was a bit surprising (because he has only been A2 for a short time) but I'm sure JaRaymond saw himself behind current guys like Chuck Filiaga, Andrew Stueber, Joel Honigford, and James Hudson and wanted a shorter route to the field.   Hudson playing on the offensive line was a bit of a surprise and reports are he is doing very well.  Sam Webb is saying he is looking at Iowa State or RR at Arizona.   If he has already two schools targeted this has been in the works for weeks.

Michigan currently has 15 spots open for the 2018 class.  So expect probably 5-6 more guys transferring or hanging up their cleats.

  • ESPN's McMurphy is saying that Michigan is a lock for the Outback Bowl, probably against South Carolina.   That of course would be a re-match in the Outback Bowl and counter to the reports that Michigan would be headed to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl.

  • Speaking of transfer season, Minnesota starting QB Demry Croft is transferring because he was suspended for damaging a door during the year, that he says didn't happen.  Croft started the last 6 games for the Golden Gophers.

  • West Bloomfield 2019 OLB Lance Dixon has been offered as a Viper at Michigan.

  • Michigan plays North Carolina in the Dean Dome tonight.

  • I'm sure Michigan continues to have FL OT Nicholas Petit-Frere very high on their board for the 2018 class.  NP-F visited A2 this weekend.

  • Herm Edwards is going to interview at Arizona State.

  • Some Michigan fans were hoping that Mississippi State would do the Wolverines a favor and hire Pep Hamilton.  I think they did Wolverine fans a even bigger favor by hiring PSU OC Joe Moorhead as head coach.

Dunlop Boots plans production expansion

Dunlop Protective Footwear, a leading global manufacturer of protective footwear located in Harford County, is planning to expand its United States-based production to meet market demands.

With assistance from a $100,000 training grant provided by the Maryland Department of Commerce, the company expects to nearly double the number of PVC boots and more than triple the number of Purofort® boots it manufactures by 2020. Dunlop provides protective footwear for workers in various industries including food processing, oil, gas, and mining, as well as agriculture and construction.

“Thanks to the diligence of our CFO Michael Witte and partnership with the state, we are extremely excited to continue to innovate and staff our American-based manufacturing plant with this grant,” said Mary Steinebrunner, general manager of Dunlop Protective Footwear USA. “We have been fortunate enough to have generations of families be part of Dunlop and this investment will help us to continue to grow the business and ensure that the next generation will be part of the Dunlop family as well.”

Dunlop Protective Footwear started its American manufacturing as Bata Footwear in 1939, and moved to its current location in Havre de Grace in 2001. Today, the company prides itself on innovating and manufacturing high-quality protective boots with a focus on safety and comfort. In 2017, Dunlop started producing its iconic Purofort® boots in the USA, and the company’s products are currently available in more than 50 countries throughout the world.

Maryland Commerce’s grant is through the Partnership for Workforce Quality (PWQ) program, which will be used to help train employees in software development and integration. The PWQ program was established in 1989 to invest in workforce training, particularly in the manufacturing and technology fields. After not receiving funding for a number of years, the program was recapitalized with $1 million in Maryland Commerce’s FY2018 budget and was part of Governor Larry Hogan’s 2017 Maryland Jobs Initiative.

“Workforce training is a critical tool in fostering an innovative economic climate where businesses can grow and add jobs,” said Governor Hogan.

Michigan Tuesday: Never Holds

There have always been whispers about Big Ten officials not being fans of Jimmy and the Michigan program overall.   Michigan tends to send plays to the Big Ten office often and highlights Big Ten officials mistakes.    Of course, this doesn't go anywhere because the over paid Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany has a ostrich management style.

 See the source image

Now there is proof, Michigan has had two very good defensive lines the last two years.   Both lines have ranked near the top in the country the past two season.   In 18 Big Ten games, how many holding calls would you have guessed were called by Big Ten officials 10?  20?,  John Kryk reports that Michigan opponents were flagged twice in two years for holding against Michigan's defensive lines.   Projected first round DT Mo Hurst was never held in the last two years in Big Ten play.   Over that same period, OSU has gotten 8 calls, Wisconsin 7, and Penn State 7.      I'm betting Mo Hurst was held 4-5 times against OSU alone.

Here is Delany's response while on vacation:

Big Ten officiating is becoming a joke and needs to be blown up and new officials need to be hired. I don't believe leagues need to have their own officials, it leads to too many personal feelings. They should blow up that system and arrange officials in regions to help on travel. East Coast, Central, and West Coast officials that would do all leagues.   This would help officials get diverse experience and limit the same officials doing the same teams during the year.

  • PSU OC Joe Moorhead who many say is the reason for PSU success over the last two years is a strong candidate to fill the open head coaching role at Miss. State.   Pep Hamilton is also a candidate.

EMR announces new leadership in third generation president

When Caroline Kauffman-Kirschnick began working for the family business as a high schooler, her biggest concern was not getting a dial tone when answering the phones. She never imagined that decades later she would step into her father’s shoes as the new president of Electric Motor Repair Co. (EMR).

“I remember the first thing I learned when I moved up to taking phone calls in the parts department was to ask whether the motor in question was electric or gas,” Kauffman-Kirschnick recalled. “One day I got a call inquiring about a broken refrigerator and without thinking I immediately asked, ‘is it electric or gas?’ The person on the other end of the line quickly hung up on me.”

But over the years, Kauffman-Kirschnick learned the ins-and-outs of motor and appliance repair and the company’s many departments, including sales and accounts receivable, before finding her niche in human resources.

“When I moved to an assistant position in our HR department, I became more interested in my role and remained there for five years,” Kauffman-Kirschnick said. “I learned a lot about our employees needs during this time and eventually moved to operations and managerial roles.”

For 90 years EMR has served the Mid-Atlantic region through their two divisions, the Industrial Division and the Commercial Cooking and Refrigeration Division. Kauffman-Kirschnick’s grandfather and company founder, Harry Kauffman, appointed her father, Roger Kauffman, as the new president in 1985. Since then, the company has been successful in providing customers with quality repairs and service through well-trained, quality employees.

EMR has always called Baltimore home and this year was recognized as one of the 2017 Best Employers in Maryland by The Daily Record. Kauffman-Kirschnick attributes the company’s success to their work environment and culture.

“Through all three generations of leadership, the importance of our company’s culture has remained the common thread,” Kauffman-Kirschnick said. “Everyone who works here is an extension of our family and each individual plays a critical role in the success of EMR.”

As president, Kauffman-Kirschnick says it is her goal to grow the company through this family philosophy.

“From a financial standpoint I’d love to double the revenue of EMR in order to do more for our employees,” Kauffman-Kirschnick said. “I want to continue to expand geographically and be the dominant service company in the Mid-Atlantic area. Ultimately, I want to do this by building on our family culture because that raises morale and makes our employees best serve the customer.”

Michigan Monday: The Future QB Scramble Begins

With John O'Korn taking snaps for the last time in the Big House against OSU and with Brandon Peters expected to be ready in a month for a Bowl Game, that is most likely the last time we will see John under center.   On Saturday night, that was the only thing we knew about the future of the Michigan QB's.

Then we hear the rumor were actually true that former #1 QB recruit in the country and current Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson took in the game and had a discussion with Harbaugh about transferring to Michigan.   It's still up in the air if Shea would be a graduate transfer or have to sit out a year.  He was hurt this season after Hugh Freeze left the program.   If that was the case, here is what that depth chart could look like:
  1. Peters
  2. Speight
  3. Patterson
  4. McCaffrey
  5. Malzone
  6. Milton
  7. Doyle
Peters, Speight, and Patterson would battle it out for a starting role.  Plenty of good QB's on the roster!

Then what we knew would be a decision for Wilton, had already been made.  Wilton on Sunday afternoon announces he will take a graduate transfer year and play for another team for his 5th and final year.  Ok, that makes sense,  Let's re-shuffle again:
  1. Peters
  2. Patterson
  3. McCaffrey
  4. Malzone
  5. Milton
  6. Doyle
Then we hear from Sam Webb this morning that Michigan said to Shea, thanks but no thanks.  We are happy with Peters and McCaffrey.  He is now mostly likely heading West.   Ok, time to re-shuffle again!
  1. Peters
  2. McCaffrey
  3. Malzone
  4. Milton
  5. Doyle
Ok, finally have this thing figured out!  We are set, lets head into next season with these 5 guys!   Wait, a second.  Reports are that Alex Malzone will graduate in 3 years this spring and look for a 2 year graduate transfer situation this summer.   Ok let's re-arrange the deck chairs one last time.
  1. Peters
  2. McCaffrey
  3. Milton
  4. Doyle
The list is final.  Reports are that Milton is heading to Ann Arbor in January, so that should help.  At least we finally have an all Harbaugh roster of QB's.   Not a ton of experience with this group, Peters will have a handful of games as a red shirt sophomore, McCaffrey will be a red shirt freshman and Milton/Doyle are true freshman.

Even though the regular season is over (that was really fast), the fun coaching carousel began this weekend.

UCLA hires Chip Kelly - A+ hire
Florida hires Miss. State Dan Mullen - A- hire
Texas A&M fires Kevin Sumlin targeting FSU Jimbo Fisher - Would be an A+ hire
Nebraska fired Mike Riley targeting UCF - Scott Frost - Would be an A- hire
Ole Miss - Keep their interim head coach

Tennessee tried to hire OSU Greg Schiano and the Tennessee fan base blew up over Greg's involvement in Penn State's Jerry Sandusky situation and now they have pulled the offer.   Great work there guys.   That hire would have been a B- if they had pulled it off.   Not sure I have ever seen social media stop a college football hiring, times they're a changing!

Pep Hamilton is rumored to be a candidate at Arizona State.  Many Michigan fans are supporting this move!

There is new urgency this year with the early signing period at 12/20.  Schools have less then a month to try to keep their commitments in place with a new coach.

Wolverine Weekend Update: Peters Update and a New Commit

Here is the latest on Brandon Peters:

Insiders are saying that he is out of the concussion protocol and a game-time decision.  They are also saying its still probably JOK's game as he has been preparing all week.   I guess they will have to see how he is doing this morning.

Michigan also landed a 2018 Florida flip yesterday in 3 star DE Taylor Upshaw.   He is the son of former NFL defensive end Regan Upshaw.  Taylor is 6'5 245 pounds and is out of Braden River, Florida.

Taylor might be a 3 star DE but his offer list reads like a strong 4 star prospect with the likes of Florida, NC State, Clemson, Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, Wisconsin and many more.   Taylor has only been playing football for a couple of years and is closer to his basement then his ceiling at this point.   He also had foot surgery in the summer and started the season late in the year.  With Michigan's weight program I expect him to add 20 more pounds of muscle and probably heading to a red shirt year.

Taylor hasn't released his senior year highlight video yet and has game by game on Hudl, if you want to check it out.

Welcome Taylor!

Preview OSU

See the source image

Time: Noon
Location: Big House
Weather: 40 small chance of rain
TV: Fox
Stream: Fox 2 Go
Line: Michigan +12

Sorry this is so late in the day.  Haven't been looking forward to this post and don't like typing out what my head is telling me.

Tale of the Tape:
OSU D line vs. M O Line = OSU
M D line vs. OSU O Line = Michigan
Michigan O vs. OSU D = OSU
OSU O vs. Michigan D = OSU
Momentum = OSU
Coaching = OSU
Healthy QB = OSU

I've seen a lifetime worth of JT Barrett having a 3rd and 3 and running for a first down out of the shotgun.  Michigan's LB's must see that play in their nightmares.   Get ready for that again.   Urban knows he has the advantage and won't want to be too risky in the offense.  He is going to run the 2 tailbacks and JT all over the place.  Then take a few deep shots for the kill shot.

I have also had a lifetime worth of hurt Michigan QB's in this game, per the post earlier in the week, I stated 4 Michigan starters have been healthy in this rivalry in the last 10 years.   This streak has to end at some point, it would be nice if Michigan would go "Iowa" tomorrow and pull an un-likely upset.   Maybe the Wolverines should paint to visitors locker room pink?

Yell, its about F'ing time if.................
  • JOK plays like its his last football game ever
  • The Michigan defense stops OSU and puts points on the board
  • Urban's Michigan voodoo doll gets stolen
  • Harbaugh and Don Brown have something special for this week
Yell, who wants to do shots? if..............................
  • The game is over is the first quarter
  • Michigan's offense has less then 100 yards
  • Michigan's defense is playing well but not enough to win
  • Urban continues to smile a lot
  • Dobbins is running wild
Michigan shouldn't cover any OSU WR's if its less then 3rd and 4.   JT is going to run and probably get the first down.  I hate that.

Michigan's 1st and really 2nd string QB's will probably be watching in street clothes as the last we heard on Wednesday was that Peters is still in the concussion protocol and Wilton isn't cleared for contact.   That pretty much translates to OSU stacking the box, stopping the run and making JOK beat them through the air.   If he were to go down, it's Alex Malzone time.

Michigan has struggled against good teams this year and this game shouldn't be any different.   All week, I have been trying to envision ways that Michigan could upset the Buckeyes and the only thing that came to me was a complete game by the defense where they pitch a shut out and even score a couple touchdowns.   The issue is, Michigan's defense has played well all year (outside of PSU) and has given up points late in the game due to being tired and a lack of depth.

I hate this prediction but feel like Michigan is over-matched, especially when the Wolverines have the ball.  I'm expecting a few turnovers and easy OSU points.  This is going to be an ugly game  if you're a fan of the Maize and Blue.   This game reminds me of when a Brady Hoke coached Michigan opened in Dallas against Alabama.   I hate this week!

Wolverine Wednesday: Locking Up Jimmy For Life

I love reports like this.   Brady Quinn a former ND QB, broke the news that Michigan is working on a lifetime contract for Jim Harbaugh.

Remember how David Cutcliff turned down the Michigan job?  So it's hard to know if Brady Quinn does have a contact in the Michigan athletic department or not.   I like the idea of locking Jimmy up for a lifetime contract but how would that work?

When Jimmy's 85 is he still cashing checks?

If he goes Walt Disney and gets frozen, does his family cash checks for a 1000 years?

All these questions need to be answered!!! :)

If signing a lifetime contract keeps the NFL away and stupid questions like ESPN floated this week like:  Is Harbaugh a good fit for UCLA?  Sign it up.  I'm sure it has escape clauses on both sides, so Michigan doesn't get into a ND - Charlie Weiss situation or Jim can live out his dream of being the Commissioner of the Big 10.

This year was not an impressive one from a overachieving standpoint, but we still have an in-demand coach and that means something when you look at all the openings the top programs are going to have this year.

You know what all these college football head coaching opening mean right?  That the Alabama boosters will now purchase a private island for Nick Sabin and his family.

Speaking of coaches who continue to get paid.   How many checks does Chip Kelly get?  I would guess 3: Eagles, 49'ers, and ESPN.   Sources are now saying that UCLA and Florida are in a battle to get Chip as their next head coach.

Jim Delany's favorite image
Speaking of the Jim "nothing to see here" Delany.   I expect the officials on Saturday are from places like Saline, West Bloomfield, Hamtramck and Kalamazoo.

  • Michigan Basketball played the local D2 team in Hawaii last night and won 102-64.   Which was good game to get all the bench players some time.   They will face VCU at 5:00 on ESPN2 today.   Are you wondering how good the Wolverines are?  LSU who beat the Wolverines by 2 points on Monday, lost to a ranked ND by 40 last night.
  • DWade had a twitter shout out to Michigan's Charles Matthews after his 22 points last night.

  • Michigan has offered UCLA commit 2018 WR Kyle Philips.  Seems Kyle will take an official visit to A2.

  • Hopefully we will hear more about Peters healthy and practice availability today.

Michigan Tuesday: The News Seems Positive on Brandon Peters

Jimmy on his radio show said that Brandon Peters is progressing.  “Yeah, (Peters) came back today and did testing,” Harbaugh said. “He was 50% better, so made great strides in 24 hours.”

“It's totally in the doctor's hands, you hope for the best," Harbaugh told Brad Galli. "You prepare both ways, for him to be there, and next man up – we'll prepare both ways.”

Both ways means John O'Korn if Brandon isn't ready.   Wilton still hasn't been cleared for contact and practiced in a red shirt on Monday.

  • Michigan Basketball lost its first game of the year last night to LSU in Maui.   Michigan was favored in this game and LSU was pretty bad last year.  Let's hope this doesn't turn out to be a bad loss for the Wolverines.   They take on DII  Chaminade next.

  • Lavert Hill has been cleared to play this week.  He was cleared on Sunday.

  • Remember QB Vic Viramontes?  He was committed to Michigan for awhile and then committed and transferred from CAL.  Now he is one of the nation's top JUCO dual threat QB's at Riverside CC in California.   He just got offered by Ole Miss.

  • Mike McCray accepts invite to the senior bowl

  • Two former Michigan coaches are now interim head coaches at major programs.  Brady Hoke Tennessee and Jedd Fisch at UCLA.  Will be interesting to see how the early signing period is effected with the news of so many major job openings.

  • 2019 Grand Rapids offensive lineman Logan Brown committed to Wisconsin this weekend.

Michigan Monday: The Love Hate of this Week

I used to love this week, it was an exciting week where you knew the game on Saturday would be a great match-up that could go either way.  Both teams would be nervous and both teams would be playing their hearts out.

I hate this week now.  Mostly after what happened on Saturday.   That hit on Peters probably cost the Wolverines the game in Madison but made the climb on Saturday way to steep.

Folks that live in Ohio have a huge blind spot for this game.  They treat it with an intensity that could be borderline insanity or even religious fervor.   A Buckeye loss in this game is not acceptable on any level.    The last 10 years of Michigan football has made that goal much easier then it should be.

When Urban Meyer laid down on the sideline after winning in OT last year, that was a pure relief reaction.  He knows what losing to Michigan in Ohio means.   He didn't react that way for winning a Big Ten Championship or even a National Championship.

I hate this week.

I'm a huge fan of Jimmy as he is a 100% better then the two guys that were hired after Carr retired.  He has a great pedigree of playing QB at Michigan, QB in the NFL, rebuilding NFL/college programs, and even coached in a Super Bowl.   I love how he lives to coach football and gives a 100% every day to Michigan's program.    I loved how the first two years that he showed passion on the sideline, was yelling at the officials, throwing his hat, etc.

Something has changed this year and he even said, he was dead inside and was nothing but burned wood.   He doesn't get nervous has he has been through a 1000 games and seen pretty much everything.   There is something good and bad about that.  I feel a team is a reflection of it's coach.   It's good to be up for Maryland but bad when you have a similar excitement level for playing MSU or Wisconsin.   I believe this comes from Jimmy's NFL experience where there is a big game every weekend and not really any rivalry games.   Loses happen in the NFL and you just move on.    It's a little different in the college and mostly with strong rivalry games.

I know Jimmy understands Michigan's rivalries and I'm not trying to make a case he doesn't.  I'm just wondering if there is something missing?  I know one thing that is missing, which is a healthy Michigan QB. (from mgoblog user)

2007 - Mallet for a injured Henne
2008- Sheridan
2009 - Forcier
2010 - Forcier for a injured Denard
2011 - Denard
2012 - WR Gardner for injured Denard
2013 - Gardner breaks foot in game
2014 - Gardner
2015 - Rudock knocked out of game with existing shoulder injury
2016 - Injured Speight played
2017 - Speight and Peters injured

In 10 years, Michigan has had 4 non-injured QB's play and one was Nick Sheridan  (sorry Nick!).  I'm pretty sure this is JT Barrett's 10th start against Michigan in this series.   The year he gets hurt in the Michigan game, OSU wins the National Championship.

I hate this week.

I wish I had the answers: Is it bad luck?  Is it bad coaching?  Is it a lack of talent?  Is it a trend that just can't be broken?  Does Michigan players care too much - too little?

This week is setting up just like the majority of the OSU weeks in the last 10 years.   That same feeling is in my stomach, probably like the same feeling you have.

I hate this week.

Tilt

Image result for pinball tilt
This might be a dated reference but here it goes.  Back in the day, when pinball was popular, you could find a machine in restaurants, hotels, all over the place.   You could be playing and then all of the sudden the game would stop and pretty much halt your game.   It's called a tilt, similar to the blue screen of death that happens to your PC sometimes.

Michigan's season went "tilt" on Saturday.   There were a couple of plays that really turned the game/season.    The punt return was just a stupid play that happens sometimes in football.   The fumble by Peters on the goal line was a loss of 3 points.   Those aren't the plays, I'm talking about.

It was the long pass Wisconsin completed in the 3rd quarter over the shoulder of true freshman Jalen Kelly-Powell and 3rd down hit on Peters that sent him to the hospital.   Tilt - game over.

I've seen the offense under O'Korn, even his sure handed TE's won't catch the ball for him.  Tilt.

Season now is in full Tilt mode.

Cheers
  • Nordin made a field goal
  • Michigan's passing game looked decent under Peters
  • Play calling was decent on 1st and 3rd downs
Jeers
  • To many 2nd down poor play calls
  • To many injuries, Isaac looks done for the year
  • Not enough offense
  • A handful of mistake by the defense

I love Don Brown but him blitzing McCray too much opens way too many running lanes that shouldn't be there.

When were behind, 4 yard passes are not going to get it done.  Hats off to Wisconsin whose deep ball were the difference in the game.

I don't even want to think about next weekend.   Can it be possible for Michigan to have a healthy QB in that game ever?  Nope.

Wisconsin Preview

okanaganokanogan.com
Time: 12:00 EST
Location: Camp Randall
TV: Fox
Stream: Fox to Go
Weather: 37 & 80% rain
Line: Wisconsin -7.5

This line has dropped 2.5 points since it opened.   Which means Vegas started to take a bunch of money on Michigan to cover.   Some breaking news out of Madison is that WR's Rushing and Peavy who were both hurt are now off the team.   Which seems like a strange development before their biggest game of the year.

Neither Michigan nor Wisconsin has any big wins this year and each will be looking to change that trend on Saturday.  (Florida was ranked when Michigan beat them early on, but they have since imploded).  Jim McElwain now has more time for deep sea fishing.

Tale of the Tape:
Michigan O vs. Wisconsin D = Wisconsin
Michigan D vs. Wisconsin O = Michigan
Special Teams = Wisconsin
Weather = Wisconsin
Coaching = Push
Intangibles = Wisconsin

Michigan lost to MSU in a monsoon and Michigan lost to PSU in bad game planning by the Wolverine coaches.   The weather forecast looks to be cold and rainy.   Which should limit the passing game, which fits both offenses style of play.

Yell, a round of cheese for everyone if................
  • Don Brown is able to stop Jonathan Taylor
  • Michigan plays clean on offense
  • Michigan's defense creates 2-3 turnovers
  • B. Peters passes for 200 yards
  • Nordin makes 100% of field goals and extra points
Say quietly, well it's just one of those years if.............
  • Wisconsin has the best defense in the stadium
  • Michigan can't move the ball on offense
  • Michigan's defense plays Taylor like they did Barkley
  • Peters has a bad day
These teams are very similar, neither throw to the WR's and both prefer to run the ball and use the TE's in the passing game.  Wisconsin is all about running Jonathan Taylor and throwing it to Troy Fumagalli.  If this was a Bill Belichick game plan he would take those two guys out and have QB Hornibrook beat the Wolverines.   Don Brown is a great college DC but he didn't do that against Barkley and they gashed the top ranked Wolverine defense.    Wisconsin would love nothing but the same result.

Guess what Wisconsin's game plan will be on defense?  Stop the Michigan running game.  The box will be filled with Badgers and Peters will have to move the ball through the air.   We need a huge game from him, the TE's, and the banged up Michigan WR's.   Michigan will have to pass to open up any run game.   Many of us has expected that Jimmy has been keeping plays off tape for these two games, we will see if that is true early on Saturday afternoon.   Wisconsin's defense gave up 56 total yards to Iowa last week.

This is a very hard game for me to predict.  The weather is going to suck and both teams play solid and sound defense.   Both teams play right into each others strength.  This should be your "daddy's Big Ten" game.  No offense, tough defense, and whoever makes the most mistakes loses.   Big Ten teams have played poorly on the road this year and that might be the difference Wisconsin needs.   Michigan is a better team then they were a month ago but still over a TD dog in this game.  It's also a 11:00 am kick off local time.  Which is weird but better for Michigan then a night game.   Every point is important and Nordin better make his kicks.

Wisconsin 17 Michigan 13

Celebrate Small Business Saturday in Maryland

In conjunction with Small Business Saturday on November 26th, the Maryland Department of Commerce encourages Maryland residents to explore their neighborhoods and support local businesses. Show us how you shop small on Twitter with #ShopSmall and #BuyLocalMD @MDBiz.

It’s never too early to start your holiday shopping! With Small Business Saturday quickly approaching, let Maryland’s small towns and local businesses help ease you into the gift-giving season.

No matter where you live, each Maryland region has a plethora of neighborhoods participating in the #ShopSmall trend. In fact, the Kauffman Index recently ranked Maryland’s Main Street entrepreneurship sixth among the top 25 larger states – meaning the number of small businesses established and thriving in Maryland is growing.

Here are our top picks for Small Business Saturday around Maryland.

Capital Region
More than 40 small businesses are participating in a local community fair at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. Admission is free and includes access to arts and crafts, face painting for the kids, a gift-wrapping station, and more. Bring the kids to the shops along Bethesda Row, where a Kidville play area will be set up for children ages 6 and under. A holiday vendor fair is also taking place at the Mall at Prince George’s from 10AM – 8PM.

Central Maryland
Drive to Maryland’s capital and attend the opening day of HERE, a holiday pop-up shop in Annapolis. Local designers are ready to show off their unique collections to the Small Business Saturday shoppers. The Sykesville Holiday Marketplace also takes place on Saturday, with nearly 200 vendors at the Carroll County Farm Museum. Or, head north to the small businesses of downtown Bel Air, where dozens of shops are celebrating the unofficial holiday. Tip: prepare for your shopping spree by participating in a Charm City Run – taking place in Frederick, Fells Point, and everywhere in-between.

Eastern Shore
Grab a bite by the water in St. Michaels, where you can shop, eat, play, and stay all day long. Downtown Chestertown is helping shoppers by handing out shopping passports with special store offers. Princess Anne in Somerset County is also getting into the mix – the transformative town participated in Small Business Saturday for the first time last year, and plans to host specials again next week. Tip: fun for the entire family can be found at Salisbury’s City Park ice skating rink!

Southern Maryland
One of the region’s strongest Small Business Saturday showings comes from the La Plata Business Association. Now an annual tradition, it’s the town’s favorite shopping day of the year. In St. Mary’s County, the Flat Iron Farm Christmas Village kicks off next week. Located in Great Mills, there’s plenty to see and buy, including a petting zoo, candy cane house, country stores, handmade crafts, and jellies and jams. Finish the night off with the annual tree lighting ceremony in Leonardtown.

Western Maryland
Cumberland’s holiday market is kicking off with local artisans and handmade items in the galleries on Centre Street. Washington County’s artisan market – featuring local farmers and crafters – is taking place at the Premium Outlets of Hagerstown. Frostburg’s citywide promotion offers prizes, freebies, and special discounts throughout the downtown shops. Finish the night off with Lights by the Lake at Rocky Gap State Park, a synchronized music and light show with more than 150,000 lights!

For previous years and even more suggestions, read through our Small Business Saturday archive.

Big Ten Weekend Preview Week 12

It's clear the Big Ten game of the week is in Madison and there really isn't a close second.  We will just review the huge lines this week in the Big Ten.

Rutgers at IU:  Both teams are 4-6 and looking for two more wins to get to a bowl game.   IU didn't really live up to its possibilities after leading Ohio State at half time in week 1.   Rutgers has played better this year and could sneak out with a win.  IU is -11 in this one.   IU 40 Rutgers 31

Minnesota at Northwestern:  The Wildcats looked terrible to start the season but have ended up being sneaky good at 7-3.  PJ is building a program at Minnesota as they continue to Row the Boat down the river.  I like Northwestern at home -7.5.   NW 24 Minnesota 17

Purdue at Iowa:  The Hawkeyes are great a home and terrible on the road.  They are playing at home and will win big.  Iowa is 7.5.  Iowa 28 Purdue 10

Illinois at OSU:  Buckeyes are -41.  I hope Lovie makes it through this year.  OSU 51 Illinois 14

Maryland at MSU:  The Spartans better be on upset watch this week.  They got run over by OSU last week and Maryland started to gain some confidence in the second half of the Michigan game.   If Maryland doesn't shoot itself in the foot on special teams, I think DJ can keep this one close. MSU is -16 in this game.  MSU 21 Maryland 17

Nebraska at Penn State:  PSU is -26 in this one.  This will be Nebraska's bowl game as they will be home for the holidays and probably looking for a new head coach next weekend.    Penn State is the better team but Nebraska will try to do something to save their season.  This will be close in the first half and then PSU will pull away.   Penn State 36 Nebraska 24

Including the Michigan game there isn't a line lower then a TD in the Big Ten this weekend (7.5 to 41 points).

  • Derrick Walton scored 20 points in his G-League debut.

  • Breaking News: Brady Hoke will wear a headset this weekend as Tennessee head coach. :)

The company, which has 333 employees in Maryland, plans to add 367 full-time employees, targeting 700 full-time employees by the end of 2023.

“Sinclair has been growing and has tripled in size in the last six years. Now, our momentum continues as we roll out our plans to double that growth and our size over the coming five years. Wolverine Wednesday: A Few Injury Updates

24/7
Jimmy said on the Big 10 teleconference that if Tarik Black can't make it back for the Bowl Game, Michigan will apply for a medical redshirt.  Black got hurt in the 3rd game and I believe would still qualify for a medical redshirt.   Of course, we don't have any details on his injury.  We know he broke a bone in his foot and its been rumored that its a Lisfranc fracture (injury of the foot in which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus).  He has been on that little cart for a number of weeks but now is up and walking around.   With 11 catches this year, he is still Michigan's 5th leading receiver.

  • Isaiah Hole from 24/7 reports that Isaac and Higdon returned to practice on Tuesday, with an eye for playing on Saturday.  Being at practice so early in the week, is a very good sign.

  • Michigan snuck into the college football standings at #24 last night.   If the Wolverines end their season the right away, I hope to see them in the top 10.

  • An interesting 2018 DE prospect is Eyabi Anoma.  He is considered one of the top DE's in the 2018 class and will be visiting A2 next weekend for the OSU game.   He plays for Biff Poggi who you know was on Jimmy's staff last year and his son just scored his first TD for the Wolverines last weekend.   (BTW: It's great that Jimmy does that for players when playing in their home state!).  Eyabi is not a lock for the Wolverines, in fact just the opposite, insiders believe he is headed to Alabama.

  • Michigan Basketball has signed all 5 recruits in the 2018 class.   It also ranks as the #5 class in the country and a talented bunch for the Coach B to develop:
The Class of 2018 includes:
  • Ignas Brazdeikis, 6-8, forward, Oakville, Ontario (Orangeville Prep)
  • Colin Castleton, 6-11, center, Daytona Beach, Florida (Father Lopez Catholic HS)
  • David DeJulius, 6-1, guard, Detroit, Michigan (East English Village HS)
  • Brandon Johns, 6-8, forward, East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS)
  • Adrien Nunez, 6-5, guard, Brooklyn, New York (St. Thomas More Prep)

Michigan Tuesday: First Look at Basketball

John Beilein's Michigan Basketball team took the court again last night and got it's second win over a gritty Central Michigan squad.

My first impression is, this team is very rare.   They are probably 10 games away from looking like a true team with all the pieces fitting in correctly.   The good news is this team is very talented and once they figure it out, can be really good.

Too many point guards:  Michigan has a problem with too many point guards.   MAAR was the best one last night has he had 17 points, but Simpson was 5-7 shooting for 13 points as well.   The best point guard might be graduate transfer Jaaron Simmons, who looks very confident with the ball and just needs to find his role on this team.

Real Biggs:  Wagner is a good player, but I would rather see him in the paint then shooting 3's.  I think that might be an issue this year.   Michigan needs his presence in the low post for scoring and rebounding.   7-1 Jon Teske played well last night and will be a good shot blocker and rebounder this year.

Charles Matthews might be the best player on the Wolverines squad.  He is a poor mans Paul George type of player.   He is athletic and can create off the dribble.   He didn't shoot well last night, but is going to be a factor this year and maybe the next Michigan star.

Duncan Robinson is still the same player.  A streaky shooter and not a great defender.

The talent is there, this team just needs more games to figure things out.

  • Wilton has been cleared to practice, just no contact yet.   Same for Nick Eubanks.

  • The injury news seems positive on Higdon, Isaac, Onwenu, and Gary.

  • Lavert Hill is still in the concussion protocol.

  • Looks like the upside for Tarik Black would be a bowl game.

  • Speaking of injuries, Wisconsin has some as well.  Not expected to play:  LB Orr, WR's Peavey and Rushing.  DB Dixon and Center Biadasz are both questionable.

Michigan Monday: Early Look at Wisconsin and Wolverine Injuries

Wisconsin is the Big Ten's last hope for a playoff spot.  Michigan, OSU, and Penn State all have two loses and pretty much guaranteed to be outside the top 4 final spots.   Wisconsin has their sites on winning this weekend and then getting into the Big Ten Championship game (they have to go to Minnesota for the final game of the year).   Michigan has their sites on winning out and getting a share of the Big Ten East Championship.

Wisconsin is 9-0

Time: Noon EST, 11:00 AM local time on Fox.

Last win: Over Iowa at home

Pass: 188 yards per (96th)
Run: 245 yards per (18th)

Points scored: 36 (24th)
Points against: 13 (3rd)

ESPN Big Ten rank: #1
Playoff rank: #8

Line: Michigan +10

Wisconsin is the football team we have always known them to be.  They want to pound you with their offensive line and run the ball.  They prefer not to throw but will to keep your defense honest.  Three picks kept Iowa in the game for a few minutes on Saturday.

Michigan should match-up well against them on defense, it will be interesting to see what Michigan's offense can do against a very good defense.
------
A mogblog user had a good summary of injuries to the Wolverines.

Doubtful / Out
QB Wilton Speight - Neck
WR Tarik Black - Foot
TE Nick Eubanks – Upper body / neck?
OT Grant Newsome - Leg

Questionable
CB Lavert Hill – Concussion
WR Kekoa Crawford – Lower Body?
WR Nico Collins – Lower Body
RB Karan Higdon – Lower Body / Ankle
RB Ty Isaac – Lower Body
OG – Mike Onwenu – Lower Body
DE Rashan Gary – Shoulder? Might be probable but he didn’t return after getting injured

Probable
CB David Long – Knee
WR Grant Perry – Lower Body? Doghouse? Not sure but played very little yesterday and missed some time before that
RB Kareem Walker – Lower body / ankle? Played yesterday but has been dinged up
TE Ty Wheatley – Lower Body?? Played as well yesterday but has also been dinged up

The questionable status is a big concern for this weekend and OSU.  I would also put Long in questionable, as he was having knee issues on Saturday.
  • Both starting corners are banged up
  • Two top RB's are banged up and Isaac didn't even make the trip to Maryland
  • Starting guard
  • Gary would be a huge loss
Does Michigan have any healthy WR's anymore?  Every program is hurt this time of year and how Michigan heals this week, will be very important on the Wolverines chances in Madison.

  • Let's all rejoice and welcome back Brady Hoke!  He was named the interim head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday.  I sure hope Brady is renting, he was in Oregon for a year and their head coach got fired and now the same thing has happened at UT.

The Story of The Tortoise and The Hare

Michigan linebacker Josh Uche hits Maryland quarterback
Patrick Semansky, AP
Michigan played the Hare in this game to Maryland's obvious Tortoise.   The Hare/Wolverines jumped out to a 28-0 to the over-matched Terrapins.   The sleepy Hare then decided to go into hibernation after half-time.

Michigan lost the 3rd quarter 3-0 and tied the 4th 7-7.   The Wolverines could have cashed in for a late TD but decided to take a knee and close the game out.

This game was an example of what is right and wrong with the 2017 Wolverines.   They can look dominate at times and other times look disinterested in playing.   That lack of focus can't happen in the next two weeks or the Wolverines will find themselves quickly with a 4 loss year.

Michigan passed for 145 yards and ran for another 160.  Would you be surprised to learn that Maryland out gained the Wolverines?   Maryland passed for 160 and ran for 180 yards against the Wolverine defense.

I thought Peters played well for the most part.  Would have loved for him to put some more air under the deep ball to DPJ.  Bottom line is, he didn't turn the ball over and played a smart game.   The injuries tonight could be an issue for next week and in two weeks against the up and down Buckeyes.

Cheers
  • Game was over at half-time
  • Two flags on Michigan and one accepted
  • No turnovers on offense
  • Peters threw for 2 TD's
  • Evans and Higdon combined for 130 yards rushing
  • Hudson had a nice pick
  • Big Mo Hurst always plays great and had a sack
  • Long had a great pick and return
  • Gentry had a nice TD catch
  • Evans had 2 TD's
Jeers
  • Another missed field goal
  • Sleepy 2nd half offense and defense
  • Injuries to Higdon, Long, Hill (concussion) and Gary
  • Defense giving up way too many yards in the 2nd half
  • Michigan getting outgained in a blowout win
You can look at this game a couple ways, Michigan won the game in the first half and didn't want to put anything more on film for the next two opponents or Michigan lost focus in a blowout in the second half.   I think the truth is in the middle somewhere.  The game was never in doubt, but I also think this team can't afford to talk quarters off against anyone.    Quinn Nordin has suddenly become an issue and Michigan's defense looks banged up and vulnerable.

ESPN's FPI has Wisconsin winning next week by 80%.  That is a lot against a Don Brown defense.  I like the Wolverines chances next weekend, but they're going to have to put together 4 solid quarters of football, not just two.

Maryland Preview

Image result for maryland mascot funny
msa.maryland.gov

Time: 3:30 EST
Location: Capital One Field
Weather:  Cold 38, No Rain
TV: BTN
Stream: BTN to Go
Line: Michigan -17

Michigan travels to College Park to take on the fighting Scott Van Pelt's on Saturday afternoon.  The forecast calls for chilly conditions with zero chance of rain.   Maybe this game can start on time?
Jimmy will get to match-up again with his coaching tree as DJ Durkin is now in his second year leading Maryland.

Tale of the Tape

Michigan Oline vs. Maryland Dline = Michigan
Michigan Dline vs. Maryland Oline = Michigan
Mich Passing Game vs. Maryland DB's = ?
Michigan Run game vs. Maryland D = Michigan
Health = Michigan
Weather = Maryland

This is the final stretch of the "feels good" portion of the schedule.   Michigan has run through the likes of Rutgers, Minnesota and now probably Maryland.   Michigan struggled to beat bad teams early in the year and now are finding it much easier as the running game is finally executing properly.

The funny part is Maryland is down to it's 5th string QB and Michigan is on it's 3rd.  It's very strange for 8 QB's to have played between two teams.   It's time to take the training wheels off Brandon Peters and let him throw the ball, even if the running game is clicking.  Jimmy sort of kicked himself after the Minnesota game, because he didn't give Peters enough opportunities.

Yell, let's do this in Madison if...................
  • Brandon Peters plays clean and well
  • Michigan's defense is still the best unit on the field
  • Michigan's run game opens up the passing game
  • Michigan has 100 yard days for Higdon and Evans
  • Defense causes 2 turnovers
Yell, why can't we play well on the road if.....................
  • Michigan's offense is turning the ball over
  • Michigan's defense is on the field too much
  • DJ is reading Michigan's mail
  • Defense gives up big plays

The Maryland defensive line is undersized and the Michigan offensive line should have another big day in opening up running lanes.   The Maryland defense is very similar to Michigan's in structure (not talent) and we will see a Viper and strong play from the defensive backs.    The offensive line will have to protect Peters from meeting Maryland's viper Antione Brooks Jr.  Look for DJ to blitz a ton to see if the line and a redshirt freshman QB can handle it.

This game stays close if Michigan is turning the ball over and giving Maryland short fields.  It doesn't if Peters plays clean and the offensive runs for 250+ and passes for 200.

Michigan needs to win this game and win it impressively so they have some momentum going into the trip to Madison and hosting Ohio State.  As Michigan fans, we have seen improvements but we're concerned that is due to the competition then real improvements.   Run the ball, throw to the tight ends, play great defense, and leave College Park with a win.

Michigan 31 Maryland 10

Why It’s Now or Never to Embrace Big Data in Advertising Agencies

“Big Data is at the foundation of all megatrends that are happening today, from social to mobile to gaming to cloud.” – Chris Lynch, Vertica Systems
The digital advertising agency is no way behind to leverage new advancements to achieve their business goals. Unlike other industries, PR agencies are adopting the technology to capture and structure massive amounts of data. It helps them to discover the leading trends, gain actionable insights and spot new relationships to gain a competitive advantage. But the real question is why sudden shift towards Big Data and Analytics Solutions, does it have a substantial impact on advertising agencies? Following are few reasons supporting that there are several benefits for the swift drive towards big data technology.

1. Organizing the chaos of data

With the current statistics, 2.7 Terabytes of data is produced in a digital agency on everyday basis. So, to make wise decisions, Big data analytics give you the ability to quickly collect, integrate and analyze data, anytime from internal or external sources. It proves advantageous to digital advertisers who can fetch relevant insights from chaotic data and make informed marketing decisions in fleeting time.

2. Add Business Intelligence to your Business

The main reason that most top brands hire digital agencies is that they come up unique and innovative solutions. To beat the competition, you should share recommendations that your client loves.  However, poor data not only keeps you unmanaged but also cost 20% to 30% of your operating revenue. Big Data and Analytics Solutions helps you in monitoring important publications, searching relevant keywords and staying updated with modern innovations which let you figure out what works the best in a particular niche.

3. Creation of Personalized Campaigns

To target the right audience, it is important to create personalized ads and campaigns. These ads require a complete database about your customer to trigger the message in appealing and non-intrusive ways. Big data allows you to gather your customer’s data based on their liking, page visits, sharing and more. Thus, you will able to improve your customer engagement and conversion rates.

4. Stay ahead to prevent crisis

Approximately, 35% of small problems turn to the global crisis if not handled wisely. For instance, any digital influencer who criticizes the organization or highlight flaws that you would want to remove before it reaches out to millions of social media users. Through big data social learning you can actively track such situations and allows you time to handle before turning into big scandals.

With increasing demand, every Web Application Development Company is equipped with latest and modern big data tools to deliver bigger picture results. With the adoption of the big data technology in your ecosystem, the marketers can make real-time strategies based on the reliable and relevant information.

Big Ten Weekend Preview Week 11 & A Couple Recruiting Tidbits

The Big Ten has done a great job of putting itself outside of the playoff race.   Wisconsin still has a chance but their wins to date have not been impressive.  Another alarming trend is that Big Ten teams are struggling away from home in conference play.

Penn State's two losses were on the road.  James Franklin is 0-10 against ranked opponents on the road. Ohio State got rolled at Iowa and MSU got beat by Northwestern on the road.   Iowa has lost at MSU and at Northwestern. The follow up to that is MSU did beat Michigan in the Big House during a Monsoon.

Big Ten Game of the Week:

MSU at OSU:  Vegas is not buying into the Spartans and they might also believe in the Big Ten's road issues.  OSU is over a two TD favorite in this one at 15.5.  This line shocks me as MSU is coming off another big improbable win over Penn State and OSU just got rolled in the Kinnick Voodoo that Iowa has.   I don't get either one of these teams but I'm not looking for a blowout as Vegas suggests.  OSU 24 MSU 17

Iowa at Wisconsin:  If there was a second "Game of the Week" this would be the one.  The issue here is that Iowa has not played well away from it's Kinnick Voodoo.  Case in point, they scored 10 points in a loss to Northwestern outside of Chicago.  This is another big line as Wisconsin is -12.  Wisconsin 31 Iowa 21

Rutgers at PSU:   Penn State gets back to its winning ways as they are -31.   PSU 45 Rutgers 3

Purdue at Northwestern: Somehow Northwestern is ranked in the top 25.  They are on a 4 game win streak and rolling.  Purdue who we thought would be decent this year, isn't.  Northwestern is -4.5.   Northwestern 28 Purdue 10

Nebraska at Minnesota:  These are the same teams.  Both are 4-5 in the year, one team has a brand new coach and the other wants one.  Nebraska is the better team but I like the Golden Gophers at home.  Minnesota is -2.5 in this one.    Minnesota 17 Nebraska 13

Indiana at Illinois:  IU is -9.  This will not be a good game to watch.  IU 21 Illinois 20
-------
  • Sam Webb is saying that 4 star OT from Tampa  Nicholas Petit-Frere will visit for the OSU game.

  • Sam also has given us the heads up that 4 Star WR Florida commit JaMarr Chase will also visit for the OSU game.  Is Chase a great name for a WR or what?

  • There continues to be a lot of rumors around Otis Reese who is a Michigan commit de-committing and heading to Georgia.  On a personal note, I sat next to a Georgia booster on an airplane a couple of weeks ago, he was saying that Otis is for sure heading to Georgia, though he was also shocked that Aubrey Solomon went to Ann Arbor last year.   Aubrey and Otis were teammates last year.   I also believe the Michigan coaches are feeling pretty confident about Otis staying in the class.  We will know in about a month during the early signing period.

Amazon selects Tradepoint Atlantic for new distribution center

Amazon has officially announced plans to construct an 855,000 square-foot fulfillment center at Tradepoint Atlantic in Baltimore County and bring 1,500 new jobs to the region.

The company currently employs more than 5,000 full-time associates at three existing facilities in Baltimore City and Cecil County. Associates at the new facility will pick, pack, and ship customer items such as electronics, books, housewares, and toys.

“We’re excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in historic Sparrows Point and to continue innovating in a state committed to providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience. Maryland has an incredible workforce, and we are happy to add to the more than 5,000 associates already serving customers in the state,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s vice president of North America Customer Fulfillment.

“Amazon’s decision to open a fourth facility in our state is tremendous news for this local community and for Maryland as a whole,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Successfully delivering this project and these 1,500 new jobs has been a top priority of our administration and another example of how Maryland is and will continue to be open for business.”

To assist with project costs, the Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $2 million conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). Additionally, Baltimore County has approved a $200,000 conditional loan to assist with development costs at the new facility. The company is also eligible for various state and local tax credits, including Maryland’s Job Creation Tax Credit.

Last week, Governor Larry Hogan announced a new plan called the ACCESS Initiative – or Achieving Computer Science Collaborations for Employing Students Statewide – to boost education and workforce development in the field throughout Maryland.

The ACCESS Initiative fulfills the governor’s commitment to strengthening computer science education throughout Maryland, which will help meet workforce demands of the 21st century. According to the recent announcement, there is an estimated 500,000 open computing jobs in the country, and more than 115,000 open computer-science related jobs in Maryland.

“For nearly three years, our administration has worked tirelessly to build an unrivaled ecosystem of innovation and economic growth in Maryland,” said Governor Hogan. “We want to make sure that Marylanders have the tools and the skills they need to compete for 21st century jobs.”

“In this rapidly-evolving job landscape, states that have access to a highly trained workforce will have a major advantage. Maryland simply must continue to lead the way, and closing this skills gap begins with a focus on education. We must spark the interest of students – particularly girls – beginning at an even younger age, and we must inspire high school and college students to pursue careers in computer science,” the governor continued.

The governor also signed an Executive Order that will direct the Task Force on Cybersecurity and Information Technology to study opportunities on how to grow the number of computer science graduates from local universities, as well as growing diversity within the sector. Read more about the announcement here.

The governor’s announcement arrives as the third annual Maryland STEM Festival takes place throughout the state. The festival encourages students to take an interest in STEM and learn about future job opportunities in the field. From the mountains of Garrett County to the Eastern Shore’s “friendliest town” of Pocomoke, there is an event happening for every type of student. Wolverine Wednesday: Top 25 Disrespect and I love it

The second week of the College Football Playoff poll came out last night and for the second week it left Michigan out of the Top 25.
  • There are 5 three loss teams in the top 25
  • Northwestern and Iowa are ranked
Why do you love it Bob?  Might be your first question.

Your either in the top 5-6 or it really doesn't matter as only the top 4 teams make it to the playoffs.   The second reason is, Jimmy and staff can use this for motivation to close out the season.  Michigan will need to take care of business against Maryland and I think they match-up very well against Wisconsin.   OSU has looked great and terrible in back to back weeks.

Michigan needs to play well to close out the season and this disrespect should only help with motivation!

  • Today is the first day of the early signing period for basketball and Michigan is expected to have 5 players sign LOI's. David DeJulius, Adrien Nunez, Colin Castleton, Brandon Johns, and Ignas Brazdeikis.  24/7 ranks this class #5 in the country.

  • The Michigan - Maryland line is now set at 16.5.
