Guest feature: Martin Roesch is the Vice President and Chief Architect, Cisco Security Business Group.
In today’s digital business and government environments, success often depends on securing data, devices and people. That’s why security is one of the fastest growing segments in IT, and why it is the number one IT priority for both small and large organizations.
While Cisco is already widely known as a networking leader, we are also heavily invested in security. Our security business is currently growing at twice the industry average, and we are the leading security company in the market. Cisco has been building, acquiring and integrating multiple technologies over the last several years to provide our customers the most comprehensive, effective security portfolio and architecture. Sourcefire, which Cisco acquired in 2013, was based in Columbia, MD. As the founder of Sourcefire, I was fortunate to live and work in the Columbia area with its proximity to a pool of bright and innovative engineers, high quality educational system and universities, and its historical commitment to research and development.
Staying ahead of our competitors requires that we maintain a strong presence in major cybersecurity hubs such as Maryland. Cisco’s new Maple Lawn, MD offices enable us to collaborate with the more than 11,000 IT businesses, and leverage a workforce of more than 116,500 industry-related professionals so that we can deliver a differentiated approach to addressing security-related issues for our customers.
Maryland is also home to the Cisco Talos Group, comprised of more than 250 of the industry’s top threat researchers and supported by extremely sophisticated systems to create threat intelligence for Cisco products. As a primary member of Cisco’s Collective Security Intelligence (CSI) ecosystem, the Cisco Talos Group is dedicated to protection before, during, and after a threat manifests itself in a network, and providing data to surface bad actors in real time using the largest threat detection network in the world.
Talos is backed by leading-edge infrastructure and systems that provide visibility from aggregation and analysis of Cisco telemetry data. The cybersecurity experts in Talos work to proactively develop intelligence and build detection technologies that enable customers to quickly protect themselves. Through the use of research and development, we markedly improve detection mechanisms that surface and verify unknown threats. For example, our researchers have recently lowered our “time to detection” to just 6 hours, while most of our competitors average 100 days. As a team, we gather and analyze data to produce and distribute actionable intelligence like this to our customers and products. By assisting in their defense and informing our customers on new and ongoing threats, we create a unique outreach and response process, making it easier for customers to protect themselves from both known and unknown emerging threats.
