Michigan Friday: Previews The Final 4 Game

Michigan will take the court on Saturday at 6:00 EST for another historic Final 4 game.  This game will be against the Cinderella Story of the tournament 11 seed Loyola-Chicago that is lead by a 98 year old Nun Sister Jean.   Who now has T-Shirts and Bobble Heads in her likeness.

Michigan has the largest base of alumni in the US and that might be the only folks that are rooting for the Wolverines on Saturday night.   Many basketball fans will be rooting for The Fighting Sister Jean's and I'm OK with that.

Loyola has been "playing with house money" all tournament and it has showed in their approach.  They have shot the ball very well and played solid defense.   Like I mentioned early in the week, this team is very similar to a Coach Beilein squad.  So Coach B should know how to defend it, right?

Loyola plays small ball even when their 6'9 center is on the court.  They go really small when he isn't.  This team wants to shoot the ball from 3 and dripple drive for easy layups or dish to the wings for open 3 point shots.   That's it folks, that is how they want to win the game.   Spread the floor, shoot well which should open up the lane for easy drives.

Here is the deal about shooting the ball, sometimes your team gets cold.  We have seen it for 3 games in the NCAA tournament, against A&M when Michigan shot well, the game was over in the first 10 minutes.

So does this game come down to who shoots better from 3?  Yes and No.  The 3 ball in my opinion is the only way Loyola stays in this game.

Loyola turns the ball over a ton and with Michigan's new strong defense, we expect that trend to continue.   Michigan also has the miss match size with Wagner and Teske to get easy looks down low.  Loyola doesn't block shots and has to stay with Michigan's shooters, so it should be a lay up line for the Wolverines down low.  If Loyola turns the ball over a bunch and Michigan can run, this will be a one sided game.

I expect Wagner to have a big night (not shooting 3's)  in the post.   I also expect Matthews athleticism to get him those easy lay ups and mid-range jumpers that he loves.  I also expect Teske to add like 12 points off the bench as well.   If Michigan can shoot the 3 ball at all, that should equal a long night for the Ramblers.

Simpson will lock down one of the Rambler guards and I expect big nights from the seniors MAAR and Robinson as they know this is their last chance at basketballromance.   The stage will also be very large for the Ramblers who are used to playing in small gyms and arenas.

I like Michigan in this game by 10 points.

  • Michigan pulled the plug on the VA Tech home and home yesterday.   Though I love the idea of the match-up, Michigan can't continue playing the toughest schedule in the country every year.   #More home games!  Michigan replaced them with Arkansas State for a home game.

  • Reports are that Kareem Walker made it back to practice yesterday.  Sounds like he has been dealing with an injury.

  • Ohio DE Gabe Newburg a 3 star DE is visiting this weekend and will be on commit watch!

Tech company of the week: Convergence Technology

Last May, Governor Hogan announced the Excel Maryland Initiative at the inaugural Maryland Business Summit in front of more than 700 business, education, and community leaders in the state. The initiative’s goal is lofty – to launch a comprehensive, statewide economic development strategy focused on developing new collaborative techniques to accelerate growth in the life sciences and cybersecurity industries.

With more than 35 incubators and research parks and a number one ranking in STEM job concentration, Maryland is fertile ground for entrepreneurs in life sciences and cybersecurity, industries where Maryland already leads. Excel Maryland, the latest tool in the state’s toolbox, is designed to propel these industries to even greater heights.

MDBizNews sat down with a few local businesses that are thriving in the state’s cybersecurity sector and giving the Commerce team plenty to brag about at the upcoming RSA Conference.

Convergence Technology Consulting in Columbia, Md., is a leader in managing, moving, and securing data. The company prides itself on being able to not only secure their clients data, but also still make it accessible to the people who need it, from anywhere in the world.

Founded in 2012, Convergence has been on the cutting edge of data management since the dot.com bubble. CEO and President Larry Letow, who has more than thirty years of sales, operations and finance experience in the IT industry, says the company has enjoyed tremendous growth in Maryland.

“Maryland has a lot of great resources,” said Letow, “one being the biggest client in the country – the U.S. Government – and that trickles down to a high percentage of our companies and supporting businesses. There is no other place (that I know of) where a technology company should be situated.”

Convergence Technology’s clients include the Armed Forces, the intelligence community, civilian agencies, the nation’s largest defense contractors, and major companies in the healthcare and financial services industries. The earned trust of these heavy hitters is something Convergence doesn’t take lightly.

“There are very few companies around the country that have our expertise from endpoint to endpoint,” said Letow. “We have the ability to successfully deliver and secure your data from the time it’s developed to the time it’s delivered to any endpoint anywhere in the world.”

Convergence believes that the data security industry is only at the beginning when it comes to its role in every facet of society. As software integration increases for industries across the board, so will the threats against it, and that’s where Convergence comes in.

“Data security is on every CISO’s and CIO’s mind,” said Letow. “It’s a line item in every budget. The future of our industry is strong and at the beginning of the bell curve.”

Michigan Thursday: It's Opening Day!

Today is MLB's Opening Day and most expect the Tigers to be out of the running for the playoffs by the end of the next week.  So this should be a long summer for Detroit Baseball fans.

Good Thing we have the Final 4 this weekend!  I will look at the semi-final game on Friday.

  • Ole Miss has finally responded to the Shea Patterson waiver.  We don't know what they responded, we just know their response has been submitted to the NCAA and Michigan.  Now, the ball is back in the NCAA's hands.  The NCAA will hold an eligibility committee meeting at some point that will make the decision on whether he is immediately eligible or not.  This could take a couple of week or a couple of months.

  • A number of instate football prospects are expected to visit Michigan on Friday as they have the day off from school.

  • FL 4 Star WR John Dunmore will visit A2 on 4/13 -4/15.  He is also visiting Florida, FSU, USC, UCLA and Ohio State in the next few weeks.

  • Michigan has offered 2019 VA 3 star OG Jakai Moore

  • Speaking of the Tigers - RIP Rusty Staub

Small Businesses, Find Out How to Protect Your Data

CNN described 2017 as “the year nothing seemed safe”. With data breaches at Equifax, school districts across the country, and even the National Security Agency, cyber attacks impacted untold millions of people in 2017 alone. The trend is on track to continue in 2018 – already, the Identity Theft Resource Center reports that there have been 228 data breaches that exposed the data of nearly 4.1 million users.

Cyber intrusions at large corporations are often the ones making national news. Yet according to the National Cyber Alliance, more than 70 percent of attacks target small businesses. Nearly 50 percent of small businesses have been hacked and of those, as many as 60 percent go out of business after six months.

If you’re a small business owner, how do you keep your company safe?

Start by registering for Cybersecurity for SMBs: Protecting Your Business. This free seminar – presented by the Maryland Department of Commerce, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) – will take place on Wednesday, April 25, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the National Cyber Center of Excellence in Rockville, Md. Wolverine Wednesday: Football News and Notes

Jimmy said on his podcast that he is not ruling out Wilton coming back to the program.   My guess is that Wilton was counting on Jedd Fisch getting a head coaching job or at least an OC role.  That didn't happen and I'm wondering what the market is for the big QB?   Many have speculated that Wilton will come back if Shea's NCAA waiver is not approved.

Fun Quotes from Don Brown on his defense:

“Can’t say enough good things about Herb[ert] and the strength staff. Really gave us a really solid group of guys in terms of cardiovascular and bigger, stronger, faster, and just glad to be back with my guys.
“Been doing this a long time. This might be if not the fastest then one of the fastest groups I’ve ever been around, so pretty excited about it. Obviously we’ve got a lot of things to work on but we’ll get there. There’s no question in my mind.”

"This Khaleke Hudson is playing at a tremendous level a year ago, and I think he’s a much better cover guy right now. He’s playing at a much faster rate. He should go kiss Ben Herbert on the lips because he’s helped him tremendously.
“This Josh Ross is gonna be a dude. He’s gonna be a really good player. Drew Singleton will be a very good player. Noah Furbush, his arrow is so far up from a year ago.

"Secondary-wise, if you ask me, the guys that have made the biggest jump: Ambry Thomas has practiced extremely well for three practices. I’m talking jumpers now. You know we’ve got Lavert [Hill] and David Long, Brandon Watson. Those three guys are veteran guys that are playing pretty good, but this Ambry Thomas, now? Different level. Confident. Fast. He ran through on a sweep play—now, again, we were in pajamas the other day, so it’s not a physical thing, it’s just like Wow, that was fast, so happy with him.

How have your two early-enrollees looked so far?
“Uh, Myles Sims? Had a big play today. Not out of place. I’m talking about you watch him make a break on the ball and I kind of went Damn, he’s big [holds hands level with the top of his head].

“Oh, Taylor. Um, good, young, fast, athletic, and willing. We need to get him a couple cheeseburgers and some baked beans and some pizza and he’ll be just fine.

Here is some more tidbits from insider umBig11:
  • RB is Higdon, Evans and open
  • Black and Collins are impressing at WR
  • Ambry Thomas is making big strides as you can see above
  • Punting still seems to be an issue

Michigan Tuesday: Trey Burke Loves Him Some March

See the source image
I'm sure Trey Burke hasn't been very happy with his NBA career to date.  He seemed to struggle with Utah, got traded to Washington, and then found himself out of the league.   College's Player of the Year in 2013 can't find a home in the NBA and started the season in the G-League.

Trey quickly tore up the G-League and NBA teams started to notice.   The Knicks were struggling and needed some scoring help with former teammate Tim Hardaway out early in the year with an injury.

Last night Trey went for 42 points and 12 assists for the Knicks against the Hornets.  Lets hope he has finally found a home and nice long career in the NBA.

  • GA 3 star 2019 offensive guard Ty Murray visited A2 this past weekend and said it "felt like home".

  • Michigan seems to still be recruiting the QB position for 2019 and continues to recruit Graham Mertz who is committed to Wisconsin.

  • 2019 four-star DE Joseph Weté also visited A2 this past weekend.

  • Jalen Rose 100 year old grandmother has a message for Sister Jean - "It's been a good ride, but its over!  Go Blue!"

  • I know we don't like to think about, what if scenarios but..............What if DJ Wilson was still on Michigan and not on a bench in the NBA?  DJ was just re-called from the G-League Wisconsin Herd back to the Milwaukee Bucks.  He scored 19 points in his final G-League game but is not expected to be in the Bucks rotation when he returns.

Michigan Monday: An Early Look at The Ramblers

Loyola-Chicago is 32-5

They won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament.

Tier One: Best win was at Florida and they did lose at Boise.

Last loss was on 1/31 at Bradley.

If Coach B was still at a smaller school, it would be exactly like this team.   They play small ball with their tallest guy a 6'9 center on the roster.   They shoot well from the field and don't get any offensive boards.   They play smart basketball and have surprised a few people in the tournament this year.

Loyola has played close games through the tournament and have done it with scoring the basketball.  As we have seen from the Wolverines and other teams, shooting as been a bit off for many teams in the tournament this year.   They do a great job in spacing the floor and getting room for their offense to be effective.  Loyola has been "playing with house money" and shooting the ball very well.   Scoring the basketball and draining 3's can cover up a ton of weakness in other areas.  They only give up 62 points a game, which ranks 5th in the country as they play smart defense, but rank 326th in rebounding.

Loyola like Florida State turns the ball over a ton which has really has been their Achilles heel this year.  They rank 214th nationally in turn overs.  Michigan as you know doesn't turn the ball over which should be a big advantage for the Wolverines.  Loyola doesn't have anywhere near the length or athleticism that FSU did and Michigan should be able to score the basketball off turnovers on Saturday night.

Michigan will also have a big advantage on the boards and with their strong defense from its guards Simpson and MAAR.   Wagner is a huge miss match to anyone the Ramblers can throw at him.

You do have take in the affect that Loyola is the "darling of the tournament" and on a fun run for their program and fans.   So they will have to shoot the lights out of the Alamo Dome to win this game, which they have pretty much done most of the tournament.   We also know that shooting can come and go and Michigan has been winning games with their defense and offense in the tournament.   I like Michigan's chances with Coach B having a full week to game plan and Coach Yaklich knowing them from coaching in the same conference last year.

  • TNT will have a special Michigan broadcast for the Loyola game.

The Wolverines To The Final 4!

Michigan players (from left) Zavier Simpson, Moritz
Detnews
In a year with FBI investigations and $100 grand payouts.  The cleanest coach in the business is taking his team to the Final 4 to play a small school in Chicago who is supported by a now famous 98 year old Nun.   You couldn't write this script if you tried.

Michigan shot the lights out in the Staples Center on Thursday, on Saturday they were having trouble throwing the ball into the ocean from the Santa Monica Pier.  Michigan won this game on defensive side of the floor against a very athletic team that seemed to have played 20 guys.   Michigan was missing 3's and getting their layups blocked.  Everything was a struggle on the offensive end, even the free throw shooting at the end to make the game closer then it should be.

When your shot is not going down, you have to make it up on the other end of the floor and that is what the Wolverines did.  The game was ugly and intense as neither team was scoring the ball with any regularity.   I was starting to lose my mind as Wagner kept shooting 3's after he hadn't made one all night.  Matthews kept Michigan in the game with his drives and Zavier Simpson has become a unbelievably good point guard.   Simpson at the start of the year looked like he was going to spend more time on the bench then the floor this year has become the heartbeat of this team.   His defense, ball handing, good decisions, lack of turnovers, and dribble drives are a thing of beauty.   He is the ideal point guard in anyone's offense.  Duncan Robinson who was struggling all night on both sides of the floor hit a huge 3 point shot with less then 3 minutes left and made two clutch free throws after MAAR and Simpson has missed a few with under a minute left.

At the end of the game, I felt more relief then joy as that game was a 12 round heavyweight fight.  It is so nice to have a Michigan team playing at a high level and Coach B will go down as the best basketball coach to ever walk the floor in Crisler.

Congratulations to the Wolverines and I can't wait until next Saturday!!

  • Congratulations to the Michigan Hockey team as well as they qualified for the Frozen 4 on Saturday.

  • Third congratulation goes to the Ferris State Bulldogs who won the Division 2 Basketball National Championship on Saturday.

Michigan Friday: Remember The Time When We Got Excited About Spring Football Starting?

The Michigan Football Team starts Spring Practice today and most fans don't care.  Why?  Michigan is now a basketball school! ☺

Players on the Michgan bench react after Michigan forward
Detnews.com
You know what happened last night, so I won't recap that awesome game for you, but I will just list the random thoughts going through my head during and after the game:
  • Hey Coach Kelvin Sampson, who is the better team now?
  • That is the Michigan Team I have been waiting to see since the Big 10 Championship
  • When Coach B's offense has great shooting, its a beautiful thing to watch
  • Michigan Basketball has been to the Elite 8, three times out of the last 6 years
  • Michigan vs. FSU on Saturday for Orange Bowl Revenge
  • I was so happy that CJ Baird former Michigan Manager got to score a 3 point basketball with less then a minute less in a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game.  He will never forget that moment, which was the perfect ending to the perfect game.
  • Michigan had two guys with over 20 points (MAAR and Wagner)and one with 18 (Matthews).  That is a great combination for a Michigan win.
  • Michigan had 21 assists
  • Michigan had 12 steals
  • Michigan assistant coach and defensive coordinator Luke Yaklich is the new Don Brown

What a win and love that this team got it's shooting back.  I hope they have it on Saturday night as well.
  • Michigan Football will be back today with its first Spring Practice.  Is this the year of Shea Patterson leading the offense?  Is the team stronger and faster with the new S&C guy?  Does anyone wonder why Florida's head coach Jim McElwain is at practice?  Has Ed Warinner made the offensive line better yet?  -- Lots of work to be done in the next couple of weeks.

  • Michigan also has its pro day today and the headliner has been cleared to play and hopefully a team will take Big Mo Hurst early in the first round.

Michigan Thursday: Game Day

Michigan Basketball Twitter
Michigan takes the floor tonight again at 7:37 EST against a Texas A&M team that got to #5 in the polls this season and just beat UNC on Sunday.

Texas A&M did beat Penn State early in the year 98-87 and then hit some rough road when they lost 5 games in a row which included losses to ranked Kentucky and Tennessee teams.  They also had a late in the season 3 game losing streak, which included losses to Mizzu, Arkansas, and Mississippi State.

A&M beat UNC by going down low to Tyler Davis and Robert Williams and then mixing in the 3 ball.   Texas A&M also might have played the best game in the tournament so far.   Michigan hasn't played decent since the Big Ten tournament which seems like a month ago now.

The low post will be a challenge for the Wolverines and getting rebounds.  Michigan will not win this game if they continue to give A&M second or third chance points.   Michigan didn't even try to get offensive rebounds against Houston.   Expect a ton of Teske and Wagner needs to stay out of foul trouble and stay on the floor.

A&M does have a tendency to turn the ball over and plays very good defense.  Even though they shot well against UNC, that are not known as a deep shooting team and will probably score a ton of 2 point baskets with put backs.

The bottom line is, did Michigan get its shooting touch back?  They will not be able to play like they did last weekend and win this game. If Michigan can run their stuff and shoot the ball well, I like their chances against the A&M defense.   A&M can be a little hot and cold as a team and lets hope we get the colder version tonight.

Michigan needs to get their flow back and lets hope Jordan Poole helped with that.

  • Sam Webb has a free article up on an interview with new WR coach Jim McEwain and his approach to making the young and talented Wolverine Wide Receivers better.   I'm still on the fence with this hire, but I have to admit he is over qualified for this role and its really good to have a full time coach working with this position.

  • Michigan's Pro Day is Friday and Big Mo has been cleared to participate.

  • Looks like Rashan Gary has changed his number to the legendary #98.

Wolverine Wednesday: New Jordan's For The Public Coming in June

If you want to wear the shoes Jordan Poole was wearing in the biggest shot of the tournament so far.  You can still purchase the Michigan Jordan 32's from Nike.   They still have the Westbrook Why Not's still in stock as well.   Both shoes versions sold out quickly at the MDen put there are plenty available at Nike or Ebay.

When the shoes are still available at Nike, that means they didn't have the impact Nike was hoping for both models of Michigan Jordan's.   So the Jordan Brand will release Michigan Jordan 12's in June.   The price will be $225 which is very expensive and I expect in limited availability.

The picture below is probably not the version that will be released:

PSNY Air Jordan 12 Michigan

The team also has a PE (player edition) that is different from above.

  • Speaking of the Sweet 16 Basketball team, the Wolverines made it to LA last night.   I'm sure they will get a good practice in today and then of course the game against Texas A&M on Thursday night.

  • Jimmy, Jim, and Pep the new Michigan Football offensive brain trust say they are going to run more RPO's next year.   I don't care if they run more wishbone as long as it gets more first downs and touchdowns.   Michigan was also going to run the west coast offense last year.  Not sure that ever happened.

  • Spring Game is April 14th at 7:00.  Its free.

10 Ways to Celebrate Maryland Agriculture

Guest feature: Jason Schellhardt is the Director of Communications for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Follow along with MDA @MdAgDept and Maryland’s Best @MdsBest.

Did you know that most of life’s necessities – food, fiber, clothing and shelter – start with agriculture?

March 20 is National Agriculture Day, which recognizes the contributions of agriculture to American society. To coincide with this national celebration, Governor Larry Hogan has declared March 18-24 as “Maryland Agriculture Week.” From the mountains of Western Maryland with its dairy farms and hay, to Central Maryland with its greenhouse and livestock industries, to the Eastern Shore’s acres of corn and poultry – Maryland truly grows something for everyone.

“Maryland is incredibly fortunate to be home to a rich and diverse agriculture industry,” said Governor Hogan. “I am proud to recognize and celebrate this week with our hardworking farmers and producers, who continue to show their commitment to this vital industry, their communities, and our statewide efforts to protect the Chesapeake Bay.”

In Maryland, one-third of the land mass – over 2 million acres – is farmland. In 2017, the top commodity sectors were poultry (broilers), grain, greenhouse and nursery, and dairy. For more interesting facts about Maryland agriculture, see the AgBrief.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture shares 10 suggestions to help citizens recognize National and Maryland Agriculture Week:

    1. Watch Maryland Farm and Harvest on Maryland Public Television or online. The hit series, now in production for a sixth season, puts a human face on farming by showcasing personal stories about farmers, their work with the land and resources, production of food and fiber for our society, challenges, hopes and dreams, and their future.
    2. Take It from Maryland Farmers: Backyard Actions for a Cleaner Chesapeake Bay. This helpful education campaign provides homeowners with information and tips from farmers that they can use to do their part to help improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The initiative offers a series of fact sheets that can be helpful.
    3. Plan your garden and repair lawns with certified seeds. Spring is almost here and now is the time to plan for your gardens and lawns. Be sure to get a soil test before fertilizing and check out the University of Maryland Extension’s Grow it Eat it website.
    4. Visit a winery. Maryland has ten wine trails and 70 wineries that offer more than 400 different wines. Touring a winery or a vineyard in the countryside, tasting some of Maryland’s fine wines, and enjoying the company of friends are wonderful ways to spend a springtime day.

State of Maryland Supports Paragon Bioservices’ Expansion

The state of Maryland and the Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corp. (AAEDC) announced today their support of Paragon Bioservices’ new commercial manufacturing facility under development in Anne Arundel County and the addition of 200 new jobs over the next four years.

Earlier this year, Paragon, a leading biologics contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) with expertise in gene therapy and next-generation vaccines, announced plans to lease 150,000 square feet in the BW Gateway development on Harmans Road.

The new facility will enable the company to expand its manufacturing operations, as well as house some of its administrative and business development activities which will move from the University of Maryland BioPark. The company is planning to retain its Baltimore City operations in the BioPark, as well as its 200 employees at that location.

“The expansion of our biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities via our new site, including the ability for commercial manufacturing, is a key strategic initiative for Paragon,” said Pete Buzy, Paragon’s president and CEO.

Michigan Tuesday: A Better Time

Michigan gets to play on Thursday at the house that Kobe built in LA (Staples Center).   The tip off is a much better time for the Wolverines and its fans.  The tip is at 7:37 EST or 4:30 local time in LA.   I don't know if you can correlate the late start times for Michigan's poor shooting this past weekend, but I'm sure it didn't help.

Many Michigan fans were excited about Texas A&M beating UNC this past weekend as North Carolina beat the Wolverines handily earlier in the year at Chapel Hill.   I was thinking just the opposite.   Having Coach B game plan against a team he has already seen, I believe was an advantage for the Michigan.  The team is also completely different then it was prior to the Big 10 season and UNC is one of the worst 3 point defending teams in the nation.    I thought that was a better formula for a Wolverines win.   Now we get Texas A&M who maybe had one of the best games of the weekend as they blew out UNC on Sunday in Charlotte.

Should be a great game and I hope Jordan Poole woke up the Wolverines shooting touch.

  • Speaking of Wolverines heading out West - Moe Ways will finish his career playing at CAL as a Golden Bear.  Good luck to a good guy! I hope he can find A WAY for football to pay for a Michigan under grad degree and a CAL masters degree.  As Fleetwood Mac always said," You can go your Moe Way, Go your Moe Ways"

  • The nation's #1 player Ohio's five-star defensive end Zach Harrison spent Saturday in Ann Arbor with Don Brown, Greg Mattison and new coach Al Washington.

  • Purdue's NC dreams took a pretty big hit, when Andre The Giant/Isaac Haas fractured his elbow in the first round.  Isaac wants to play and the NCAA has very clear rules on what type of brace you can and can't wear.   The Purdue engineering program is working on finding a solution before Friday's game against Texas Tech.   I would play the Big Man (as long as he can't hurt his elbow any worse) and just let him play defense and rebound if he can get both hands over his head.  On a side note, there was a great 30 for 30 on Sunday on what a great brother he is to his younger sister who suffers from devastating seizures.

  • CT 2019 four-star safety Tyler Rudolph will take an official visit to Ann Arbor in June.

On a side note, I do like the new rule on letting kids take official visits outside of the football season, sure they don't get to go to a game, but they can really focus on getting to know the coaches and seeing the important aspects of the University.   I always wondered how much time the coaches can spend with recruits during game day or before.

Michigan Monday: A Wow Weekend!

USA Today
As Michigan football fans, we are used to disappointment and have a self protecting device in all of our brains that protect us from complete melt downs.  So when it looks like the game is lost, that device triggers and we start thinking the game is over before its officially over.  That device allows us to deal with the loss prematurely, so we can move on to worrying about other things like Spring Football and whether Shea Patterson is eligible or not.

We would love to turn off that device, with thoughts like it's not over until its over, but then we remember things like block fields goals against App. State and Colorado's Hail Mary.  So that thought really has the opposite effect because it brings up memories of how Michigan has lost on the final plays.   For some reason we struggle to remember anytime Michigan won on the final play or last second, but we surly remember the losses.

That changed on Saturday night.  We watch Michigan pretty much play as poorly as they could for two games and now understood it caught up to them.   Michigan's senior guard misses a wide open lay-up to tie and now Michigan has to foul with only 3.6 seconds left.   Michigan's defense was keeping them in the game but the shooting again was off and the officials were calling every little bump or touch.   Michigan was shooting air balls from 3 and the motion offense lacked motion.   It looked like it was going to be a long night before it wasn't.

I watched the final play standing up as I was putting away the snacks and drinks as it was time for bed.  Michigan gets the clean pass to half court, which surprised me and then MAAR dribbles into double coverage, he decides to dump it off to a freshman.   The ball seemed like it was in the air for 5 minutes.    As the entire play felt like it was in slow motion, because the devise in our heads didn't want it to be too painful for us.  The ball goes in and the bench explodes.   My first thought was, "lets make sure he got the shot off".  As it was clear the device was doing its job.

I had to sit down to take it all in.  What had happened?  The device had malfunctioned?  Michigan somehow won a game that wasn't winnable with 3.6 seconds left?  Maybe a tie and overtime, but this was a Michigan win?  It took a few minutes for it all to make sense.

Hats off to Jordan Poole and that big shot!  What a win and another win for the Wolverines when they didn't have their A game.   I'm not sure they even had their B game this past weekend.

Time for us to reset our devices!

  • I'm not sure this blog has ever lead with another story when a 4 star QB commits over the weekend.  Cade McNamara a 2019 4 star QB from Nevada and recent ND de-commit committed to the Wolverines on a visit this weekend.   Cade is 6'1 and around 200 pounds and a 4 star QB to Rivals and Scouts, ESPN rates him as a 3 star and barley in their top 300.  He does look taller then 6'1 as he looked a little taller standing next to Jimmy who is 6'3.  Most of the services has him rated around the 9th pro style QB in the country.  Cade has started since he was a high school freshman and has a ton of playing experience all ready.  His offer list was an impressive one with the likes of ND, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and others.    He is headed to a for sure red shirt when he gets to Michigan as the Wolverines will have a room full of QB's even if Shea does head to the NFL.    With Cade's commitment the Wolverines have the 5th ranked 2019 class on 24/7 which is the zip code the Wolverines should be in every year.  If you need more information on Cade and his commitment check out Mgoblog.

Michigan Friday: Grandma Always Said, "Nothing Good Ever Happens After Midnight"

Montana forward Jamar Akoh (15) and Montana guard Sayeed
Robin Buckson, Detroit News

I watched too much basketball yesterday like most of America and my first thought was if Michigan plays like they did in the Big Ten Tournament, they are going to make a good run to the Final 4.  Teams were playing sloppy, turning the ball over, and not shooting well.

Then Michigan took the court at 10:30 PM EST, which is a crime in itself.   Athletes are not at their prime that late at night, yes college kids normally stay up late, but they don't take Mid-Terms at 11:00PM either.   The game started, Michigan wins the tip and Wagner falls down and travels in the first two seconds.   Then a few seconds later MAAR gets the first foul of the game and Coach B pulls him out of the game.

That was a little example of how the game would go for the Wolverines.   Montana jumped out to a 10-0 lead and the Wolverines looked like they were sleep walking in the first half.   If Montana had an offense even a little like Buffalo, the Wolverines would have joined Arizona in heading home today.   Montana in the second half couldn't throw the ball in the ocean from the beach, they struggled in all aspects of offense.   The Wolverines didn't too much better and really was only holding on to a 10 point lead.

Mo Wagner was off all night and finished the game with a total of 5 points, Matthews played well and mostly lay ups and dunks and had 30 on the night.   MAAR who struggled most of the night finished with 11 and was the only other Wolverine in double figures.

Michigan looked rusty and bothered by Montana's trap defense and quick guards.   The game was slow and even slower with a long delay due to the scores table losing power (even the scores table didn't want to play that late).   The Wolverines got a lift from their bench in the first half with Simmons and Poole got some important buckets when the Wolverines were in a funk.   The defense in the second won the game as the Wolverines continue to turn the ball over and mostly on fast breaks.

The best thing you can say about this game is the Wolverines won and moving on.   They now face a Houston team that had a guard go for nearly 40 in the game prior.   He seems like Houston's only  offense and Simpson and MAAR will have their hands full with a volume shooter.

Guess what?  Michigan has the late game again and will have a 9:40 tip (hopefully).  Poor Coach B is not going to get much sleep as he has a lot to fix before Saturday night.

  • Jimmy's brother-in-law Tom Crean got the Georgia head coaching role

  • Mazi Smith 4 Star DT from Grand Rapids seems to be trending to Michigan right now.

Michigan Thursday: It's Back To Basketball Day

After 10 days off, Michigan will take the court tonight but it might be closer to tomorrow morning, as the expected tip will be around 10:00 EST.   Coach B pulled out all his tricks to keep the Wolverines sharp, as nothing kills a hot team quicker then a long rest.   On the flip side, Michigan and the 3 other Big Ten NCAA Teams should have fresh legs for a run through the tournament.

Montana plays in the Big Sky league and tend to fall more towards the defense side of the ball then an explosive offense.   They like to trap the ball and force turnovers for easy offense.  Michigan should be well prepared for that and we might see more time from guys like Jaaron Simmons for ball handing purposes and to give Simpson some rest.

Coach B seems to do well in March because his system is really hard to prepare for in a small window.  If Michigan shoots the ball well at all, I expect a double digit win for the Wolverines.

Here are some examples of Montana playing better teams:

Lost: 70-57 at Penn State
Lost: 70-54 at Stanford
Lost: 66-63 at Washington

Michigan and Montana both beat UC Riverside:

Montana won 77-61
Michigan won 87-42

Michigan's other major sport, football has a few recruits in town this weekend for a visit:

-Zach Harrison,  4 star DE from Ohio - He seems to a OSU lock but Michigan will get its shot this weekend.

-Will Harrod, 4 star OT from Maryland - 6'5 300 pounds and a strong lean towards the Wolverines.  Could be on commit watch.  Yes Please!

-Tra Wilkins, 3 star Athlete from GA - This guys has an impressive offer list from the SEC and may project to LB.

-Paul Tyson, 4 star QB from Alabama - Yes he has an Alabama offer.   Enough said.

-Daequan Hardy, not ranked CB from Pittsburg - Only 5'10 but a good athlete that could blow up on the recruiting trail.   He has offers from Michigan, Army, Navy, Buffalo, and Bowling Green.

-Dax Hill, 5 star Safety from Tulsa - Maybe the best safety in the country, experts believe an OU lean.

Wolverine Wednesday: If It's Broken It Better Get Fixed

See the source image
USAToday
I know coaches have to protect kids and support their team during the season.  So when Jimmy said, they were very confident in John O'Korn going into the OSU game, you know he was doing just that.

Michigan had three glaring issues after the embarrassment in the Outback Bowl:
  1. QB
  2. Offensive Line
  3. Team was not strong enough
Hopefully, Jimmy fixed the first problem by getting a 5 Star QB to transfer in.  (of course we are still waiting on a NCAA decision if he is eligible or not).   The second problem we believe is more coaching than talent.    It took some time but Jimmy fixed that by moving out Drevno and hiring offensive line guru Ed Warriner.

Now it has been confirmed that Jimmy is doubling down on the offensive line coaching.   He has hired Detroit Lions Offensive line coach Ron Prince (and former head coach of Kansas State) to a analyst role and former Tennessee Titans defensive assistant with offensive line coaching experience Brandon Blaney to the same analyst role.  As I'm sure most of you know, these positions are not "on the field coaching" but can help with game strategy, scouting, and film review with the players.

“Ed Warinner and Ron Prince who’s now working with us as an analyst,” said Harbaugh regarding the voices now charged with shaping his offensive line. “Brandon Blaney is coming over from the Titans, who also coached offensive line at Iowa State in his career.  We’ve got some tremendous coaching and a bunch of guys that need to get coached really well.”

So that position group is getting plenty of attention, which of course it needs.  So what about the new S&C guy and the new workout center that just opened?

Did you know Michigan was outscored in the 4th Quarter 23-0 against Wisconsin, Ohio State and South Carolina?  All three games were winnable and that is just a crazy stat.

Ben Herbert was hired from Arkansas to fix that problem and make Michigan a stronger better conditioned team.  Ben is big into accountability and nutrition to get the results on the field that he has been successfully doing for Hogbacks and Badgers.  Here is one approach that Ben has used in the past from the Land of 10 site:

The story goes that he went to a local Home Depot, purchased a couple of giant house plants, stuck a nametag on one and called it “The Governor” and did the same with another, calling it “The Deacon.”The Governor was fed a diet by the book and tended to regularly. The Deacon was given beer, whiskey and Doritos. (or what college kids usually eat and drink)

It didn’t take long for players to see the difference in the two plants. Or to get the damn point.

Every Badgers workout ended with the players grabbing hands and forming a large circle. If you were late for a workout or a test, you couldn’t join in and were forced to stand in the middle as your teammates surrounded you. No shock, the circle got larger as time went on, and the head count inside started shrinking, too. One circle. One page. One goal.

So we know Herbert is big into accountability. And greens. His sundae bar at his last gig with Arkansas included kale and avocado as mixers for the energy drinks. In 2014, the Razorbacks trotted out the heaviest offensive line in FBS, with an average of 328.4 pounds per blocker.

You can love or hate the story above, but the approach is different and new to the Wolverines and that is exactly what they need, as the past approach has not been effective.

I tip my hat to Jimmy and his wiliness to change to get the results we are looking for.   Yes, it took a little longer then we liked and Yes, Pep is still on staff and Jimmy did hire the failed Florida coach, but big changes were needed and it seems Jimmy has made them.

  • Reports are that Ole Miss got the packet on Shea Patterson's eligibility from Michigan, but it officially has to come from the NCAA and the 10 day review period doesn't start until it arrives from the NCAA.

Michigan Tuesday: Cuts Deep

Did you see the photo's of Tom Brady's hand/thumb cut before the AFC Championship game?

Here it is if you haven't see it.   Wow, was that a deep cut.  I'm surprised he could play.

  • 2019 Indiana 4 star RB Sampson James visited Ann Arbor last Saturday.

  • 2020 LB Kalel Mullins was also in town.

  • Michigan Basketball signed commit SG Adrien Nunez was named to the first team All-NEPSAC team.  Seems going the prep school route was smart for Adrien.

  • Atlanta 2019 safety Kyle Hamilton has Michigan in his final group.

  • Michigan also made the final group for the top CB in the 2019 class, five-star Derek Stingley Jr.  The issue is Derek is from Louisiana which means he is a lock for LSU.

  • Michigan just offered CT 2019 WR Cornelius Johnson.

Michigan Monday: Hello Wichita.and Montana

Michigan would have loved to have gotten MSU's spot, a #3 seed and two games in Detroit Rock City.   Remember, when Michigan got the Outback Bowl Bid over the better record MSU?  Well, that just happened to Michigan.  It didn't matter that Michigan won the Big Ten Tournament and MSU twice, MSU had the better record and the committee gave them the home cooking.

Michigan now has to go on the road to Wichita, Kansas and play a Montana team as a 3 seed in the West.   This bracket could set up a re-match with North Carolina in the sweet 16.   This time Michigan is much approved and this will be on a neutral site court.    If Michigan can stay hot after the 10 day layoff then I like their chances in this bracket.

It probably will be a 10:00 tip or later on Thursday, so schedule some late appointments on Friday because you might be a little late to the office.

I know very little about Montana but I know they start two 6'2 guys and three 6'8 guys.   They will probably try to play small ball against Michigan and to have a chance will have to shoot the lights out of the building.   This is not a roll over team and what seems a pretty decent match-up for a round one game against a 3 seed.

If Michigan can get by Montana, they will either play a good Houston team or San Diego State.  If SDS wins Round One, it will be a match-up of former Steve Fisher's teams.

  • Calvin Anderson as your probably know and predicted went home to Texas.   Calvin was a 2 star out of Austin and didn't get s sniff from UT, now he is a longhorn.   Even though I wanted him in Ann Arbor, you can't blame a kid for fulfilling a dream.

Michigan Friday: A Big Day For Wolverine Sneakerheads

Nike and the Jordan Brand are dropping two new Michigan basketball shoes today at 10:00.   They will be available at MDen and probably online at Nike.com.

It's rare for Jordan to drop two Michigan shoes on the same day, but they are hoping that March Madness will open your wallet.  It's a little taste of the new and a little taste of the old.    We will take a look at both shoes in todays post.

Jordan Why Not Zer0.1 Michigan AA2510-405 Release Date

These shoes are the newest in the Jordan line.  It's Russell Westbrook's first signature basketball shoes (he has done a few lifestyle shoes for Jordan) called the Why Not Zer0.1.  The first Why Not's sold out quickly, but the second and the third releases around the All Star Game are still available.

I believe I saw Charles Matthews wearing these this past weekend in NYC as the Wolverines ran the table.   As you can see there are no laces on these and very lightweight.  Retail is $125

These are the Michigan edition Jordan 32's low.  If you ask regular sneakerhead's they would've preferred a release in a much lower Jordan version number.  We didn't get that and today we have the 32's.  Which seems to be a trend as the last Michigan Shoe was the Jordan 31's.  This isn't your fathers Jordan's and crafted for today's marketplace with the flyknit uppers and leather heel panel.   Retail is $160.

  • Looks like David Brandon will be looking for another gig as Toys-R-Us isn't going to make it out of bankruptcy and are starting the liquidation process.   Another major retailer dying as our shopping habits continue to change.

  • Coach B will being running a full game inter squad scrimmage today with officials to keep his team sharp during the break.

Michigan Thursday: Calvin Anderson Ready To Announce This Weekend

See the source image
burtorangenation.com

We all know too well that Michigan didn't hit a home run in offensive line recruiting in the 2018 class.   So our next best hope was finding a graduate transfer.   Calvin Anderson from Rice is the top offensive tackle transfer prospect and many big time teams are coming after him like Texas, Auburn, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and others.

The issue is Calvin's home town is Austin, Texas and "its hard to say no when Mamma calls", was the famous Bear Bryant line.   The other problem is, Jimmy for some reason put Tim Drevno in charge of his recruitment and they hit it off.  They went to Top Golf and did other fun things together, it was a start of a regular bro-mance.   Calvin is also a big fan of recruiting director Matt Dudek and (hopefully soon-to-be starting QB) Shea Patterson.   The other advantage Michigan has is, Calvin would be able to block an NFL worthy D-Line during practice at Michigan and getting prepared for the NFL draft is the reason Calvin is looking for a one year gig.

Reports though are that OL Coach Ed Warinner hasn't been down to visit with Calvin at all.   So Michigan has a chance, but probably a slim one right now.   There was also a rumored back-up plan for a SEC offensive lineman that now seems to be off the table.   If Calvin doesn't pick the Wolverines, their best bet is to see what the transfer market looks like after Spring Practice.   We all know how difficult it is for transfers to qualify academically in Ann Arbor, so there maybe little to no options in that pool either.  If your wondering about Calvin academically, he is graduating in a degree in Mathematical Economic Analysis.   This transfer seems like a good experiment in his own mathematical economic analysis and whether he will get to the NFL or not.

Calvin is expected to announce sometime on Saturday.

Wolverine Wednesday: Mid-Week Bullet Points

  • Michigan has offered a not rated Ohio CB Nyles Beverly yesterday for the 2019 class.

  • Old friend and current FSU offensive line coach Greg Frey has offered Michigan commit 2019 four-star OL Trente Jones.

  • I found this interesting:   Payton Manning has sold his 31 Papa Johns franchises in Denver.   A couple interesting points,  Papa Johns is no longer the pizza of the NFL and it's CEO resigned after complaining the NFL Flag controversy was affecting business.   Payton purchased those franchises right before the marijuana laws in Colorado went into effect.  Payton will stay on as a Papa John spokesman.

  • Here is a summary of Rival's rankings of Jim McElwain classes at Florida.

Michigan Tuesday: Rest vs. Rust

In the NBA playoffs, teams try to get through the first couple rounds as fast as possible so they can have extra rest before the next series begins.   Michigan just won 4 games in 4 days and will have either  9 or 10 days off until the NCAA Tournament starts.

With the compressed Big Ten schedule this year and the early Big Ten Tournament to play at MSG, the Wolverines get maybe too long of a break.   I know some coaches even thought about scheduling a non-conference game this weekend, but I think you run up against a rule that only allows so many regular season games for most programs.   The Nebraska and Penn State's of the world who are probably on the outside looking in for the NCAA tournament would have loved one more win to help their resume.   Michigan needs a game just to stay sharp.

There is nothing that will make a hot team cold then a long layoff between games.   So Coach B has his hands full to keep this team playing at a championship level the next week in half.

  • Michigan is now a top 10 team and ranked #7 by the AP.

  • I feel terrible for Mo Hurst who had to go home from the NFL Combine this weekend as a heart condition was found during his NFL physical.   Word is that Michigan was also aware of the condition and cleared Big Mo to play.   Since Michigan has one of the best Cardiology Departments in the US, lets hope the NFL clears him as well and that this isn't serious or life threating.

  • The Jordan Brand will release 2 Michigan shoes on Friday.  The first is the Michigan 32 which we showed you last week.   The second shoe is the Jordan Why Not?, which is Russell Westbrook's new Signature Jordan shoe line.  I believe some of the Wolverines were wearing these during the Big Ten Tournament.  Price is $125

Jordan Why Not Zer0.1 Michigan AA2510-405 Release Date
Jordan Why Not Zer0.1 Michigan AA2510-405 Release Date

  • Coach Drevno ended up at USC as RB Coach and Passing Game Coordinator.   Good Luck to him.

  • Former Michigan kicker Ryan Tice will play at Tennessee next year.

  • 4 star 2019 DT Mazi Smith really connected with the new Michigan S&C staff on his recent visit to A2.

Bank of America Continues Expansion in Baltimore County

Bank of America, one of the world’s leading financial institutions and the largest bank in the Baltimore region, is planning to add about 600 new jobs at its Hunt Valley complex by 2020, significantly expanding its Baltimore County operations.

The anticipated increase follows the addition of nearly 300 jobs in 2017, which would raise total employment at the location to about 1,500 by the end of the decade. The new jobs primarily will comprise call center and staff support positions. Individuals interested in applying for an open role may visit http://careers.bankofamerica.com/.

“We are pleased to expand our base of operations in Baltimore County and the great state of Maryland, and we are appreciative of our public servants who work tirelessly on behalf of the community we are proud to serve,” said Bank of America Greater Maryland Market President Sabina Kelly.

Hunt Valley is one of Baltimore County’s most vibrant employment centers, with McCormick’s new global headquarters opening next door, convenient light rail, and the amenities of Hunt Valley Towne Centre across the street from the two-building Bank of America complex, which includes a Merrill Lynch office.

Bank of America has added space, upgraded interiors, and increased parking at the site. The Maryland Department of Commerce worked closely with other state agencies, including the Maryland Transit Administration and Baltimore County, on permitting and stormwater management issues.

“It is tremendous to have a financial leader like Bank of America grow its operations and add hundreds of new jobs to our state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Maryland offers an extremely competitive and attractive location for global companies, and this expansion is further proof that Maryland is Open for Business.”

Michigan Monday: Celebrates Back 2 Back Big Ten Championships!

When we would say, "Michigan is now a basketball school", we all smiled and thought maybe someday.  Well folks, we might be there.   Coach B and the Michigan Basketball Team did the impossible again, winning 4 games in 4 days and winning the Big Ten Championship.

This was a classic team effort, with everyone contributing..  Jon Teske might have been the MVP of the game as he came in and was able to slow down Purdue's Andre the Giant/Isaac Haas, while adding 14 points and 12 in the first half.   Haas is one of the largest most athletic big men I have ever seen, since maybe Shaq.   Even with Andre the Giant's domination, Michigan continued to run its offense, as they were taking him outside and opening driving lanes for Simpson and MAAR.

See the source image

Michigan took a close game in the first half and blew the doors off the Boilermakers for most of the second.   Only some shaky free throw shooting down the stretch kept the game close as the largest lead was 18 points.
You have to just love this "lunch pail" type of team and Michigan couldn't be hotter right now.  The issue is, with the moved up Big Ten Tournament, Michigan will have nearly two weeks off without a competitive game before the NCAA starts.   Which will give us plenty of time to discuss the rest vs. rust debate.  (It would be great if Michigan was able to bring in another team that isn't in a tournament next week to play a scrimmage at Crisler.  I don't even know if that is allowed but it would be great to keep the team sharp.)  Now it will be left up to the NCAA committee on where they put Michigan and which seed.  Wolverine fans are hoping for Detroit and a #3 seed.

Congratulations to the Wolverines for another tournament title! Go Blue!

Michigan Friday: That Was A Close One

Michigan needed OT to beat Iowa "who was playing with house money" on Thursday afternoon.   The Wolverines went dead cold from the 3 point line and needed some strong defense and Duncan Robinson to pull out this win.   It was also nice to see Charles "In Charge" Matthews as the leading scorer again with 16 points.

The Wolverines have a difficult match-up today against Nebraska who is the #4 seed but also playing for their NCAA Tournament lives.   They need a Q1 win and that could come today against Coach B's squad.   Michigan traveled to Nebraska a few weeks ago and left with a 20 point loss.   Michigan will have to hit some 3's and stay out of foul trouble to win this game and move on at MSG.

2:25 Tip - BTN again.

  • Don Brown has offered NC 3 star 2019 CB Jalen Frazier.

  • How can Ed Warinner make a good first impression?  Land Rice transfer Calvin Anderson.  Calvin has a good relationship with Tim Drevno and recruiting director Matt Dudek.  We know Drevno is gone and Warinner is taking his place.  Ed will need sell Calvin on his past successes and getting guys to the league.   Calvin is also interested in working against Gary in practice everyday, which of course will make him even better.

Michigan Thursday: Michigan Basketball Plays This Afternoon

Michigan will play Iowa this afternoon at 2:30 at MSG in NYC.  Iowa will be playing less then 24 hours after beating Illinois last night.  Michigan is 2-0 against Iowa this year and has scored 75 and 74 points against them.

Coach B has the team playing well again late in the season and looking to make another run in the Big Ten Tournament.   Michigan usually plays well in NYC, so lets hope they continue the streak today and through the weekend.  Game is on BTN if you can catch it.

  • Insider Sam Webb pens a article that makes Shea Patterson immediate eligibility a strong possibility.  Ole Miss must respond to Michigan's request and decide to support or not support Shea's immediate eligibility.   After that is completed it goes to the NCAA for a final decision.

  • Michigan Basketball commits David DeJulius and Brandon Johns both made the final 5 for the Michigan Mr. Basketball Award.
