Ocean City named a top ten beach

Michigan Tuesday: Wolverines At The NFL Combine

The NFL Combine in Indy officially opens today and will run until next Monday.  The players don't start doing drills until Friday.  Players are going through physicals and interviews before they hit the field this weekend.

Here are the Player Positions Schedules if you want to tune in on TV (NFL Network):

Friday: RB and OL
Saturday: QB, WR, and TE
Sunday: LB and DL
Monday: CB and DB

If you haven't been following the mock drafts, Peppers has been dropping due to uncertainty of what his true position is, at this point he could drop out of the first round.   Taco has been rising up the first round and could be a top 10 pick now.

I think if Peppers runs a 4.3-4.4 40 yard dash could shoot back up the draft.  Chris Johnson still holds the combine record at a 4.24.

Here are the Wolverines that will be at the combine:

Ben Braden
Jake Butt (injured)
Taco Charlton
Jehu Chesson
Jeremy Clark
Amara Darboh
Ben Gedeon
Ryan Glasgow
Delano Hill
Jourdan Lewis
Jabrill Peppers
De'Veon Smith
Channing Stribling
Chris Wormley

If you want to track how each player is doing during the week, you can hit this link and sort by Michigan.

Looking at the above list really makes you worried about next years team and all the talent Jimmy and staff have to replace.

Michigan Monday: Coach B Does It Again

It seems the last few years, Michigan Basketball continues to trend like this.

Up - Has a good pre-Big 10 season and sets up for a nice run in the Big 10

Down - During the early to mid Big Ten season, the team struggles on the road and loses a head scratcher at home. Rumors about Coach B being on the hot seat start popping up.

Up- Team finishes the regular season strong and gets into the NCAA tournament.

Michigan had a strong senior day and beat the #14 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday afternoon.  With this win, the Wolverines seem strongly in the NCAA Tournament.   Michigan still has to go on the road to play a tough Northwestern team (looking for it's first ever NCAA invite) and Nebraska.   Hopefully, the Wolverines can win both or split the pair before the Big 10 Tournament.

Michigan is never going to be able to get a ton of one and done guys.  Those player are not who Coach B recruits.   I think the goal of this program is to be a Wisconsin like team.    Top 25 team, makes the tournament every year, and once every 5 years makes a run to the Final 4 with some guys they developed.

  • I usually don't like reporting recruiting news for two classes out but with the small numbers expected in 2018, it seems the coaches are making the 2019 class a priority.   2019 four-star OLB Anthony Solomon who was just up for a visit is planning to attend the Spring Game.  (I don't believe there is any relation to Aubrey).

  • 2018 4-star TE Brevin Jordan of Vegas is expected to visit Ann Arbor soon.

  • If I had to guess at Michigan's 2018 board, I would guess QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is the top player on it.

Maryland couple provides home care services

After caring for elderly family members for years, local couple Jack and Pat Savage realized the importance of home care services throughout Maryland.

So in 2015, the Savage family opened ComForCare Home Care in Glen Burnie. The franchise provides help to in-need individuals at home, independent and assisted-living communities, hospitals, nursing homes, and more. The couple recently celebrated their two-year anniversary with the business.

Prior to ComForCare, Jack spent the majority of his career working in federal government contracting, while Pat practiced law in Anne Arundel County and the surrounding region. Together, plan to bring qualified home care and companionship services to families across the state.

Jack Savage sat down with MDBizNews to answer a few questions.

Q: How did you first discover ComForCare?
A: My wife Pat and I came across ComForCare Home Care in a “Biz for Sale” listing in the summer of 2014. We saw the value of this business after taking care of Pat’s elderly parents for several years and seeing what a difference outside caregivers and agencies, like ours, can make in the lives of our clients and families at an affordable price.

Q: The number of seniors in the U.S. is increasing quickly. How will this impact the home care industry?
A: In the next two decades, there will be more than 70 million people over the age of 65 in the United States. Nearly one out of four U.S households has a need for a caregiver – for a relative or to help a friend. This will lead to more patients in need of our services.

Q: How will this growth impact your business? Do you have plans to expand in Anne Arundel County or Maryland?
A: The growing number of older people represents a tremendous opportunity for companies, like ComForCare, that recognize it and position themselves to capture a large share of the business in this fast growing sector. As a matter of fact, we recently purchased the neighboring ComForCare territory covering all of Howard County, and small portions of Montgomery and Baltimore County. As we take on more patients we will need to hire more caregivers, which may lead to additional locations.

Q: What is one misconception people have about the home care industry?
A: A misconception is that we are only there once someone is sick and can no longer take care of themselves. Our services are available around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services include a wide range of non-medical activities ranging from bathing, showering and hygiene assistance, to cleaning, laundry, transportation and much more. We serve not only as caretakers, but as companions as well.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in owning a franchise?
A: We wish we knew more about the existing business infrastructure before we took it over. Get to know your franchisor, including some of the people you will be working with. Make sure you like them and that they genuinely like you. And finally, read the franchise agreement carefully along with your attorney to make sure you understand what you are getting into.

Michigan Friday: Why Play Florida in Dallas?

*If you live in Dallas or the Dallas area and a Michigan fan, please excuse this rant.  I 100% understand why you would want Michigan to play at Jerry World every 5 years or so.

When David Brandon was driving the Michigan Football Bus off a cliff, I believe it was Brian Cook at Mgoblog you said that David wanted to be Jerry Jones.   That is 100% accurate as David moved two Michigan home games to Jerry World.   The first game was more of a scrimmage for Alabama as they played Denard and an Al Borges offense.   I 'm betting many of you have removed that game from your memory and mad at me for even bringing it up.

I just don't understand why you play this game in Dallas?  You take a home game away from the team and Michigan fans/season ticket holders.    You also lose a recruiting weekend.

Yes, I get this will be one of the best games opening weekend (FSU does play Alabama as well).   I have no problem with Michigan playing Florida, I just rather it be a home -away contract.   Play in Ann Arbor and then in Gainesville the next year.

When you put a college football game in an NFL stadium it loses some of its luster if you ask me.    I attended the Orange Bowl and sat in the Michigan section.   It was nothing like the Big House or even how I imagine The Swamp to be.  That is the beauty of College Football.    Should we play Ohio State at Ford Field or in Cleveland?  Hell No!  That would never be up for discussion.  (I did want to play MSU at Ford Field when the Big Ten changed the divisions, so Michigan didn't have to travel to East Lansing in back to back years, but Brandon dropped the ball on that one as well)

Jimmy and the Wolverines also play very poorly in night games.   The ones that come to mind are all losses, Utah, Iowa, Orange Bowl.  I might be mistaken but I believe the only night game win under Harbaugh is at Rutgers 78-0.

So why rant about this now?  The tickets for the Dallas - Florida game are now on sale.  They start at $105 for nose bleeds and end at $305 for decent seats.   $610 for two decent seats - Thank You David Brandon!  If your wondering, Toys-R-Us has to sell 47 Barbie Dolls to get two decent tickets to the Michigan - Florida game.

  • More examples that 2018 will be a small recruiting class, Steve Lorenz is saying Michigan is already done recruiting DE and LB for the class.   Michigan has one commit for each position at this point.   I'm guessing this class might be done by this summer and the NSD drama might be pretty quiet.

  • 2018 Marietta (Ga.) Lassiter 3-star CB Christian Jackson visited A2 yesterday.

Sign Up Now For Farm-Fresh Local Produce

Guest feature: Julie Oberg is the Communications Director for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Follow along with MDA @MdAgDept and Maryland’s Best @MdsBest.

Marylanders are encouraged to join a Community Supported Agriculture farm this year to support local farmers while receiving fresh produce all summer long.

Members pay an upfront subscription fee to farmers in return for a share of the season’s harvest, which is usually provided weekly. For convenience, many Community Supported Ag farms deliver to central locations for pickup closer to subscriber’s home or work on a certain day of the week—others have special rates if the subscriber helps with the harvest on the farm.

“Community Supported Agriculture farms are another way for residents to buy fresh, local food directly from a farmer,” said Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. “This is a great time of year to join a program and enjoy a summer full of fresh Maryland produce. By purchasing local food, consumers are helping to keep land in farming rather than development.”

According to the most recent agricultural census completed in 2012 by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, there are 12,549 farms in the United States marketing their products through Community Supported Agriculture, including 119 in Maryland.

Memberships typically fill up fast. For more information on a participating farm near you, go to MarylandsBest.net.

Michigan Thursday: A Couple New Football Hires and The NCAA Freezes Ole Miss

This is going to happen every year that Harbaugh is at Michigan.  His staff and coaches are going to come and go.  The reason is that Jimmy's staff is a great place for coaches to get promotions.   This programs will be a continues round robin of coaches. Case in point, the last two Oregon WR coaches came from Jimmy's staff or almost Jimmy's staff (Michael Johnson took the Ducks role after accepting a role on Jimmy's staff).  This is similar to Nick Saban's staff,  who has had 3 OC's in the last month or so.

The next example is a the current Defensive Coordinator of Hawaii has accepted a non-coaching role on Jimmy's staff.    Which seems a little strange and a step back in Kevin Lempa's career ladder.   Maybe he was getting pushed out or just needed a change (Dude, you were working and living in Hawaii?).   Either way, it's a net gain for Michigan Football and that's all we care about.

Question for the Big House Blog inmates:  I know staff members are not allowed to coach on game days, but what about practice?  Can staff members be on the field coaches during a regular practice?

The next hire came earlier this week when Michigan announced Sean Magee had been named Michigan Football's Director of Player Personnel.  Sean came from Navy.

  • Remember in the 2013 recruiting class when a ton of top players went to Ole Miss?  We all wondered out load when the NCAA would hit them for violations?  Treadwell even posted a picture of himself holding a couple thousand dollars.   That day was yesterday.   I guess Hugh Freeze will get more time to spend with his family now.

  • Michigan Basketball grinded out a victory over Rutgers last night on the road.   If your wondering, the football team scored more points at Rutgers last season.   In other basketball news, Mark Donnal won't be back for his 5th year next year.

  • Michigan offered Orlando 2018 QB Joe Milton this morning.

Wolverine Wednesday: Picks Up A Legacy Player and Loses A Potential Superstar

I complain a lot this time of year, there just isn't any news around the program to give my loyal readers good content.    Today is not one of those days.   Michigan picked up a 4 star Legacy DE last night and officially lost a future superstar to a transfer and family issues.

Let's start with the bad news first.   Devin Asiasi made it official and has left the program and will transfer to a school closer to his home in California.   The rumor mill has been spinning on this topic for nearly a month, so this transfer does not come as a surprise.  It seems Devin hasn't been in class and has been out with his family in California.

This is a tough loss for the Wolverines.  Devin played a lot as a freshman and I expected him to be a player that falls between Devin Funchess and Jake Butt.  Which would make him an All American type of player.   I'm willing to bet he ends up at UCLA with Jedd.

Now the good news:

Michigan gets a 2018 commitment from legacy instate 4 star DE Aiden Hutchinson.

Aiden is a 4 star DE to Scout's and 247 and 3 star to ESPN and Rivals.   He is 6'6 245 pounds and has plenty of growing to do as he is still a young man and only 16 years old as a junior in high school.

As it's still very early in the 2018 class, spots will be limited for the Wolverines in a class expected under 20 players.   Aiden being a legacy player, is expected to stick until signing day.

His evaluations have been all over the board as he is closer to his first floor then his ceiling as a young player.   If he continues to grow, add strength, and weight he could be a dominant player on either line when he gets to Ann Arbor.   He did preform well at the Best of the Midwest combine on Monday.

Aiden holds offers from LSU, MSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, BC, Minnesota, Syracuse, Vandy, and a few others.

This is the 3rd commitment to the 2018 class.

Welcome Aiden!

Michigan Tuesday: Jimmy Hires Another Offensive Analyst

There is hardly any sports news right now with the NBA on vacation, Spring Training yet to begin and the NFL draft still months away.    So when Jimmy does something it gives ESPN and other talking heads something to talk about.

Since Jimmy's last hire headed to Oregon instead of joining his staff, I'm sure this hire will get similar inspection.    Reports are that Jimmy has hired Norv Turner's son Scott as an offensive analyst.   I can't wait to hear how Pete spins this one?  Let's take a few guesses....

  • Harbaugh hires Norv Turner's son so he can make his way back to the NFL and hire Norv has his OC.

  • This is just a way to really hire Norv and have his input on game plans.

I don't know if Scott has any 5 star kids ready for college in a few years, but he does have some nice experience.

Pitt offensive assistant (2008-2009)
Pitt WR coach (2010)
Carolina Panthers quality control coordinator (2011-2012)
Cleveland Browns WR coach (2013)
Minnesota Vikings QB coach (2014-2016)

This seems like a strong hire as Scott is very well regarded in NFL circles and another guy to help develop QB's and WR's.

  • 2018 4 star NJ RB Iverson Clement had a good visit to Ann Arbor last weekend.

  • Michigan also offered Dayton 2018 RB Tavion Thomas.

Michigan Monday: Another Sign Our Coach Is a Rock Star

If you follow this blog, you know that I have wrote posts on how Jimmy is a Rock Star and at another celebrity level then maybe any other coach in college football.   Yes, Urban and Nick have more hardware, but Jimmy is a Rock Star like no other.

It's not even worth mentioning his twitter battle with ESPN SEC water carrier Peter Finebaum.    I'm sure rock stars barely have time to worry about radio talk show host's that takes calls from crazy SEC fans.

I'm talking about getting an invitation and attending Michael Jordan's 54th Birthday party on Friday.   Folks who get an invite to this type event are the elite of the elite in the sports world.  Jimmy was there in a "jumpman" sweater and hanging with the likes of AI.

A Rock Star!  We know Jimmy is a fan of AI as he has sported his jersey before at satellite camps.

  • Michigan Basketball took a tough loss last night on the road at Minnesota.

  • Congrats to GR3 winning the NBA Dunk Contest!

  • Former commit and weekend visitor, GA 2018 offensive guard Jalil Irvin was blown away by his visit to A2.

  • This is Andre the Giant Big!  Michigan is recruiting IMG's 2018 offensive lineman Daniel Faalele  who is 6'8 and 400 pounds!

What is Fueling Cisco’s Rapid Growth in Security and Strong Presence in Maryland?

Guest feature: Martin Roesch is the Vice President and Chief Architect, Cisco Security Business Group.

In today’s digital business and government environments, success often depends on securing data, devices and people. That’s why security is one of the fastest growing segments in IT, and why it is the number one IT priority for both small and large organizations.

While Cisco is already widely known as a networking leader, we are also heavily invested in security. Our security business is currently growing at twice the industry average, and we are the leading security company in the market. Cisco has been building, acquiring and integrating multiple technologies over the last several years to provide our customers the most comprehensive, effective security portfolio and architecture. Sourcefire, which Cisco acquired in 2013, was based in Columbia, MD. As the founder of Sourcefire, I was fortunate to live and work in the Columbia area with its proximity to a pool of bright and innovative engineers, high quality educational system and universities, and its historical commitment to research and development.

Staying ahead of our competitors requires that we maintain a strong presence in major cybersecurity hubs such as Maryland. Cisco’s new Maple Lawn, MD offices enable us to collaborate with the more than 11,000 IT businesses, and leverage a workforce of more than 116,500 industry-related professionals so that we can deliver a differentiated approach to addressing security-related issues for our customers.

Maryland is also home to the Cisco Talos Group, comprised of more than 250 of the industry’s top threat researchers and supported by extremely sophisticated systems to create threat intelligence for Cisco products. As a primary member of Cisco’s Collective Security Intelligence (CSI) ecosystem, the Cisco Talos Group is dedicated to protection before, during, and after a threat manifests itself in a network, and providing data to surface bad actors in real time using the largest threat detection network in the world.

Talos is backed by leading-edge infrastructure and systems that provide visibility from aggregation and analysis of Cisco telemetry data. The cybersecurity experts in Talos work to proactively develop intelligence and build detection technologies that enable customers to quickly protect themselves. Through the use of research and development, we markedly improve detection mechanisms that surface and verify unknown threats. For example, our researchers have recently lowered our “time to detection” to just 6 hours, while most of our competitors average 100 days. As a team, we gather and analyze data to produce and distribute actionable intelligence like this to our customers and products. By assisting in their defense and informing our customers on new and ongoing threats, we create a unique outreach and response process, making it easier for customers to protect themselves from both known and unknown emerging threats.

Michigan Friday: Another Recruiting Tool For The Wolverines

Many of you have seen Clemson's Castle that just opened for it's football players while they're not on the field.   It is a place where the football players can work out, hang out and get treatment.   It's a really great recruiting tool.   If your a 4 or 5 star guy and it's very close between Clemson and another school, this building is so nice, it might swing the pendulum to the Tigers.

So facilities are a big deal when it comes to recruiting.   Michigan has a couple indoor practice facilities and regular weight rooms, etc.   Now they will step it up a level with a new Football Performance Center in the Bennie Oosterbaan Field House.    It won't be over the top like Clemson's new facility, but it will bring the Football Program a great space to work out and hang out.   As these areas, are where the players spend the most time anyway.

The $21 million project calls for a 32,000-square-foot performance center to be built within the 78,000-square-foot field house, which will be used for strength and conditioning training for the football program. The project also calls for the addition of a 5,000-square-foot mezzanine level.

Here is a rendering that has been out since last Spring:

Open Works drone partnership aims to help kids score jobs in growing industry

Want to learn how to make and fly your own drone?

Commercial and recreational drone use has been a growing international trend. Professional services company PricewaterhouseCoopers has predicted the drone industry will be worth nearly $127 billion by 2020. And according to the Association for Unmanned Aerial Systems International, the use of commercial drones will create close to 70,000 overall jobs in the U.S. by 2018.

The Open Works makerspace is trying to bring some of those job opportunities to Baltimore through a new partnership with Global Air Media, a Baltimore drone company that specializes in aerial cinematography and mapping services. The company will host workshops for young people and adults in drone construction, piloting and photography.

Global Air Media will also be given studio space at Open Works to build and administer Baltimore's first drone-racing course.

Port Covington’s first manufacturing bootcamp class finds jobs

Eight Baltimore City men who call themselves the Elite Eight graduated from a six-week course on Thursday, Jan. 5 that taught them basic manufacturing skills such as carpentry, welding, 3-D printing and more.

The following Monday morning, all eight of those men reported for work at their new jobs.

Now 16 more men, calling themselves Elevation 16, are beginning the same six-week journey with the Port Covington Manufacturing Bootcamp at the Foundery, the maker space inside of Sagamore Development Co.'s City Garage in Port Covington.

The bootcamp is an example of what Mayor Catherine Pugh says she wants to see Baltimore's corporate community doing more of. Providing learning opportunities for low-income citizens, many of whom have a criminal past, will help create jobs for the city's 76,000 unemployed citizens, Pugh said at a celebration for the 16 new participants on Thursday morning.

Freshly plans distribution center in Savage

Freshly, a health-conscious food delivery service headquartered in New York City, is opening a meal distribution center in Savage and plans to add 500 new jobs by the end of 2018. Expected to open in fall 2017, the new 171,000 square-foot facility will be located at Bollman Place and serve as the company’s East Coast location for food preparation, cooking, assembly, and distribution. The company plans to invest $8 million for machinery and equipment.

“After searching the region we determined that Howard County would be an ideal location to expand our services to the East Coast,” said Michael Wystrach, CEO of Freshly. “After seeing all the food processing and distribution resources already located here, it made sense to me that we would want to be where we can get the freshest foods for our clients.”

Freshly’s meals are delivered fresh, never frozen, are free of gluten and processed sugars, and are made with all natural products. The company also values sustainability, as their products are shipped using recycled denim, recyclable containers and are portion controlled to help minimize food waste. The company raised $21 million in July 2016, which company officials said will help expand their service to all 50 states, as well as expand its menu and improve technology.

“It is a tremendous win for the state and for Howard County that the fast-growing startup Freshly is establishing a significant presence in Maryland,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This new facility and the 500 new jobs it brings underscores our administration’s promise to make Maryland more business friendly and create new opportunities for our citizens.”

The one sentence that will make (or break) your LinkedIn profile

There are still so many misconceptions about how LinkedIn can be used, especially when it comes to winning new business for yourself on the platform.

Case in point: Did you realize that LinkedIn is actually one of the most powerful, B2B-themed search engines on the planet?

With nearly 500 million professionals in 200 countries, and with 2 new members joining every second, you have a whole lot of potential clients and customers under the same digital roof. Because LinkedIn is a searchable database, similar to Google, users can type in keywords and phrases to find certain types of professionals to connect with or services they want provided.

Along with using LinkedIn to find your ideal prospects and clients, you can also get "found" on the world's largest social media platform for professionals. And it all starts with a single sentence.

If you want to win, plan to fail

When the team I was working with stepped away from the conference table, they knew they’d done good work. After struggling to bring together the right product, team, and market, they were leaving with actionable items to accomplish.

That’s why it seemed strange when their leader stood up and gave them an interesting message:

“I want each of you to leave this room and fail as quickly as possible.”

It used to be easy to set a goal at the beginning of the year and soldier ahead until it was achieved. However, the fast-paced world we live in makes old ways of planning and executing obsolete, and costs companies much-needed profitability.

On a side note:  Chad Kelly who is related to Hall of Famer Jim Kelly got an invite and then the NFL resided it, due to off field issues.

  • Jalen Rose is going to do an ABC Pilot with the team that does "Fresh off the Boat".  Couldn't be prouder of Jalen who has made some great choices after his playing career.  I hope this Pilot does well.

SmartLogic Introduces Baltimore Women in Tech Micro Grants Program

SmartLogic is organizing a new micro grant program called Baltimore Women in Tech (BWiT). The program is aimed at supporting gender diversity and empowering women within the Baltimore tech community. Our hope is that a small amount of funding and support can help be the catalyst for getting creative ideas off the ground and for converting ideas into action.

The program is open to all women (both cis and trans are welcome) who have a project they would like to complete in the Baltimore metro area and that will benefit the women in the Baltimore tech community. Application are due by April 21, 2017.

If you are interested in applying for a micro grant but would like more information, feel free to check out SmartLogic’s blog post about the program or email Chelsea Keene  at chelsea@smartlogic.io with any questions. The SmartLogic blog will be periodically updated with new information regarding the program. We will also be hosting two virtual information sessions on March 13, 2017 at 6:30pm and April 4, 2017 at 6:30pm.

A Vision for the Future of Columbia Gateway

Guest feature: Brian Sheavly is the marketing director for the Howard County Economic Development Authority. Follow HCEDA on Facebook and Twitter.

Last week, Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman joined economic development officials, property owners, and businesses to announce his vision to turn Columbia Gateway, Howard County’s largest business center, into an innovation district.

Located at the intersection of I-95 and Rt. 175, Columbia Gateway is home to more than 400 businesses, employing approximately 26,000 people. The park combined with neighboring Gateway Commerce Center is 920 acres with a total of 8.1 million sq. ft. of commercial space.

“Building upon the tremendous success of Downtown Columbia, we need to continue to be aggressive in the way we plan to meet the demands of tomorrow’s economy. We now have a unique opportunity to work closely with stakeholders to create a new framework to drive innovation and economic development in Howard County,” said Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman. “Many of the pieces necessary to help elevate Columbia Gateway into becoming a hub of innovation for our region are already here. I am excited and encouraged to work alongside the great companies and institutions to help get it there.”

Under the County Executive’s new vision, the business park would be turned into an innovation district, where leading-edge companies work with anchor educational intuitions and startups to collaborate on new technologies and services. Creative connections would be fostered with more compact, wired, and transit rich development patterns. Innovation Districts are an economic development model that has emerged not only in the United States, but around the world.

“We know that in order for there to be a healthy innovation environment you have to create connections and community,” said Lawrence Twele, CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority. “One of our first goals will be to engage the people and businesses already here.

Michigan Tuesday: It's Clear Who Runs Michigan Football

I love that the University of Michigan has given the keys to the kingdom to Jim Harbaugh.   This might be the first time that has happened at this historic program.   I know for a long time, Bo didn't even have a contract while he was at Michigan.    It was also clear during the disastrous David Brandon time that he was the man in charge.

Now, Michigan is paying two coordinators a $1M each, Greg Mattison I believe is getting paid in the $750,000 range and Greg Fry just signed for 1/2 a million a year.    He is also hiring a number of guys to be on his non-coaching staff and I expect those folks are making $150 - $250K a year as well.   Wisconsin has lost a number of head coaches because they wouldn't pay their assistants a competitive salary.

The latest hire is Michael Johnson the former OC for the 49'ers and UCLA to Jimmy's non-coaching staff.   Johnson is also the father of the #1 Dual Threat QB in the 2019 class, Michael Johnson Jr..   Jimmy also knows Johnson during his brief stay with the Chargers.

It's also expected that the NCAA will approve one more coaching role for each program, which will give each program 10 assistants.   If that is approved, Michael Johnson could fill that role.

Since hiring high school coaches and fathers or mothers of recruits is a common practice, there is a new rule from the NCAA coming that you can't hire "a individual associated with a prospect" within two years of that prospect enrolling.  This rule only applies to non-coaching roles.  This hire would seem to be outside that two year window for Johnson Jr. and would not apply if he gets a full time coaching role.

  • Matt Baldeck a freshman at Ole Miss is now heading to Ann Arbor to be a long snapper.  I don't know how the transfer rules work for walk-on's and if he will have to sit out a year if he is not on scholarship at either school.

McCormick named top sustainable corporation in food industry

McCormick & Company ranks among the top 100 sustainable companies in the world, according to a new report.

The 2017 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations Index was announced last month at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. The rankings, compiled by the Canadian market research company Corporate Knights, are available online by clicking here.

The global leader in flavor ranked 1st in the food products industry and 14th overall. This is the first time McCormick has been included in the Global 100 index.

“This recognition is more than just a great achievement for McCormick—this is a testament to our people, who work towards a common purpose to make every day better,” said Lawrence Kurzius, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of McCormick & Company. “I’m proud that the shared responsibility we have for our people, our communities and the planet is making an impact and view this as an indicator that we’re on the right path to embedding sustainability into every aspect of our business.”

McCormick Sustainable Company

McCormick sets various goals to continue growing its long-term sustainability through environmental, social, and productivity initiatives. The company currently works with more than 13,000 farmers to ensure best-practice training for producing higher quality crops and educates communities on the benefits of swapping salt for herbs and spices.

Additionally, the Fortune 1000 company focuses on enhancing efficiency and shrinking its carbon footprint by providing employees with the tools needed to reduce water, waste and energy. A recap of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability efforts, including its latest CSR Interim Update, can be found at mccormickcorporation.com/our-commitment.

In spring 2015, McCormick announced the retention of its Maryland-based headquarters, and will move into the new space in the second half of 2018. The company will benefit from better space utilization as well as increased energy efficiency and sustainability in the new location.

Michigan Monday: A Couple of ND Commitments

Michigan next year needs to replace starters and many positions including cornerback and wide receivers, which are the two positions that Freddy "Footwork" Canteen played for Michigan.   Freddy had shoulder surgery last spring but wasn't on this roster this past season.   He announced he was going to transfer many months ago and has found a new home at Notre Dame.

I had high hopes for Freddy at Michigan but he never seemed to find a spot on Harbaugh's Wolverines.   Freddy played 7 games at Michigan and we wish him nothing but good luck at ND.  I have no idea when he will be eligible to play as he wasn't on the roster this past season.

  • A ND recruiting win happened this morning when 4 star Cass Tech CB Kalon Gervin committed to the Fighting Irish.

  • Michigan Basketball got its first road win of the year at IU last night.  They are still a bubble team.  Needs a good run in the Big Ten tournament.

Towson University Incubator Opens Doors for Baltimore Ed Tech Companies

Towson-based Lessoncast, one of several companies in Baltimore’s ed tech hub, is setting out to improve teacher professional development. Lessoncast offers an online platform that simplifies and enhances teacher-to-teacher professional development. The platform provides teachers with multimedia tools that make it easy to create and share lessons, or Lessoncasts, with other educators.

CEO Nicole Tucker-Smith, a former Baltimore City teacher and Baltimore County administrator, founded the company with Khalid Smith in 2011. The husband-and-wife duo has developed the company’s philosophy and vision around supporting teachers to improve student success.

“I think the best way to help students achieve higher is by supporting teachers,” Tucker-Smith said. “As teachers learn more, the students’ outcomes increase.”

Due to recurring turnover in education, training new staff is often the primary focus of professional development efforts, Smith said. The Lessoncast model is meant to help schools provide on-going professional development to seasoned teachers.

“We saw this significant gap with the processes of professional development, and saw that we can really help add something to this,” Smith said.

The company currently has 10,000 users across 700 school districts. A variety of programs, initiated through Lessoncast’s membership in Towson University’s Incubator, have supported Lessoncast as it has grown over the years.

“The biggest part of being in the incubator is that it opens doors,” Tucker-Smith said.

Membership in the TU Incubator provides Lessoncast office space, as well as space to host local teacher workshops. Through its membership, the team has also been connected to powerful TEDCO programs, and has been the recipient of TEDCO’s Tech Commercialization loan. The Lessoncast team also has direct access to a seasoned expert in ed tech startups, Frank Bonsal III, director of entrepreneurship at TU’s division of innovation and applied research. Bonsal oversees the TU Incubator, which supports 25 member companies.

After realizing the important role that technology could play in education, Bonsal, a former teacher turned investor, dedicated his career to investing in educational technology companies nationwide. Eventually, his attention turned to Baltimore.

In Baltimore, entrepreneurs have access to large metro areas, but can still navigate the area fairly easily, Bonsal said. This access, along with the support from an ed tech “ecosystem,” is what’s putting Baltimore on the map for ed tech nationally.

“It’s really a two-degree network here,” Bonsal said. “If you don’t know somebody, somebody else knows somebody. That makes it very accessible, particularly in an industry like education technology—people are more willing to help than not.”

The economic impact of the TU Incubator since inception is $50 million, according to the Regional Economic Studies Institute in 2015. Other local educational technology companies that are part of the incubator include Communication APPtitute, CiteLighter, and SpiralMath.

The TU Incubator recently plotted Maryland’s ed tech ecosystem on an interactive map. Check it out here.

Michigan Friday: MSU Football Is Having Major Issues

The off season is supposed to be a time where you reload for next season.  Whether it's new coaches or new players, the goal is to only have positive headlines.    Sparty is completely on the other side of that theory and has had a very difficult last 30 days or so.

-Yesterday the rumors became real news as MSU has suspended 3 football players and an additional staff member while they investigate allegations of a sexual assault.   The players names were not released.

-The same day, news broke that starting defensive end Demetrius Cooper was hit with a misdemeanor assault charge this Fall for spitting on East Lansing Parking Officer.

-Not to mention, they were not able to sign a player on NSD because he was in jail.

-Or that a player decided to attend South Alabama over MSU or another player wanted to walk-on to Northwestern then play on scholarship in East Lansing.

-A starting Offensive lineman also completely retires/quits football.

After a 3-9 season, it seems the worm has really turned in East Lansing and turned quickly.

  • It seems Michigan Football had a student tryout yesterday.   It looks like Josh Wilk made the team.  He played QB and Safety at De La Salle and even at one point was headed to Michigan Tech to play.

  • Michigan has offered 2018 four-star defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins out of Cincinnati.

  • Michigan also has offered 2018 ATH James Graham out of GA.

  • Nice article on 2018 TE prospect Will Mallory, son of former Michigan LB Mike Mallory.

Maryland’s Cybersecurity Prowess On Display At RSA™

For the sixth consecutive year, Maryland’s vibrant cybersecurity community will be showcased during RSA™ 2017, the nation’s premier information security conference and expo. Held annually in San Francisco, the conference draws more than 40,000 attendees to the Moscone Center. Led by the Maryland Department of Commerce, the CyberMaryland delegation includes representatives from cybersecurity companies, federal agencies, and educational institutions, as well as county partners.

“At RSA, our team will share the good news of the innovations and technologies – created, developed, and produced in Maryland – that are protecting data and networks across the globe,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “Maryland’s booming cyber sector is proof positive that the state is the place to be for cyber.”

This year’s signature event is a breakfast with General Keith Alexander, USA (Ret.), CEO of IronNet Cybersecurity in Fulton, Md. General Alexander formerly headed the National Security Agency and the U.S. Cyber Command. More than 100 guests – representing U.S. and international cyber companies, investors, RSA speakers, government officials, and academia – are expected to attend the breakfast on Tuesday, February 14, at the W Hotel San Francisco. The event is sold out.

“RSA provides an opportunity to highlight Maryland’s unparalleled cybersecurity assets to national and international audiences,” said Col. Ken McCreedy, USA (Ret.), Maryland Commerce’s director of cyber development. “Whether making connections that expand a company’s customer base, attracting new cyber companies to Maryland, or experiencing new technologies, the conference is a valuable tool for companies and commerce alike.”

Throughout RSA™ 2017, Maryland cyber experts will share their insight and expertise during conference sessions. The roster includes:

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, located in Rockville, Md., will host live project demonstrations in the booth #2815 in Moscone Center’s South Hall. The schedule includes:

More than 40 Maryland companies – including Bricata, ClearShark Labs, CloudSploit, Koolspan, Mindgrub, Optio Labs, Patriot Technologies, RedOwl, Technuf, Tenable Network Security, and ZeroFOX – will participate in the conference, hosting events and meetings, and exhibiting their technology throughout the conference. The CyberMaryland delegation will have an exhibit booth, #2518, in the South Hall. 10 Things to Love about Living in Maryland

1. Location

Maryland’s central location on the East Coast puts endless opportunity within reach of all Marylanders. Daytrips to Washington D.C., weekends at the beach or in the mountains…it’s all attainable when you live in Maryland. In addition, Maryland’s convenient and connected airports and rail systems make travel easy.

In Maryland, you can enjoy all four seasons. That means mild and comfortable temperatures in the spring and fall, and the opportunity to soak up all that summer and winter have to offer.

4. World-Renowned Healthcare

With 48 acute care hospitals, including the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital, it’s no wonder that WalletHub named Maryland the second best state for health care. Maryland has 22,500 doctors statewide, placing Maryland fifth in the country in physicians per capita, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

5. High Incomes

U.S. Census data shows that Marylanders make more, bringing home the highest median household income among the states at $75,847—that’s 36% above the national average.

6. Sports

Marylanders love their sports. No matter what team you support, there’s nothing like watching games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium—both ranked number one by Stadium Journey for offering outstanding stadium experiences. Lacrosse is the official team sport of Maryland, so it’s no wonder the Lacrosse Museum and National Hall of Fame are here, too.

7. Crabs

For visitors, Maryland blue crabs are a must-eat. Lucky locals can enjoy Maryland crab whenever they want. Whether it’s cracking crabs on your back patio in the summer, or enjoying jumbo lump crab cakes at almost any restaurant, Marylanders enjoy crabs year round.

8. Diversity

Different cultures and backgrounds are welcomed and celebrated in Maryland. The WalletHub 2016 Most Diverse Cities list featured six Maryland cities in the top 15, including Gaithersburg, which earned the number one spot.

9. High Quality Education & Workforce

Maryland public schools rank fifth in Education Week’s Quality Counts assessment of key indicators of student success, and Maryland schools are first in the percentage of public high school seniors who scored at the mastery level on Advanced Placement exams. Maryland’s workforce is smart, too, with the highest percentage of professional and technical workers in the nation, according to U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.

10. Rich History

As one of the 13 original colonies, Maryland has nearly 400 years of history, including the penning of the Star-Spangled Banner. This, and other historical moments, give Marylanders pride, plenty of historical sites to explore, and endless learning moments.

Michigan Thursday: Wolverine Faces In New Places

Ohio University has been known to take Michigan transfers and graduate transfers.  Keith Heitzman and Tom Strobel both transferred to the Bobcats in recent times.    Ohio is one of the better MAC teams and coached by former Nebraska head coach Frank Solich.  The latest is RB Wyatt Shallman who announced yesterday that he will attend Ohio U for his final year of eligibility as a U of M graduate transfer.   Good Luck Wyatt!

  • Former Michigan offensive analyst Jimmie Dougherty who left for Oregon to be the WR coach a couple of months ago, has decided to work for Jedd at UCLA as it's Passing Coordinator.   I wonder where I have heard that title before?

  • On Jimmy's staff, Chris Partridge has added Special Teams Coordinator to his current role of LB coach.

  • In Todd McShay latest Mock Draft.  He has Taco #11 and Peppers #17.  He also says that the Patriots might take Jake Butt with the final pick in Round 1 or Early in Day 2.

  • There are some rumors that there might be some big name departures from Michigan State.   These are just rumors at this point and we will see if anything comes out of it.

  • Michigan offered 2018 Iowa DL John Waggoner yesterday.

  • Greg Frey will get paid $500,000 a year for 3 years.  That is a $124K raise over what he was making at IU. Damn, Michigan is paying its assistant coaches these days!

5 qualities to look for in a good cloud provider

The cloud computing market is, in three letters, H-O-T.

While hosted email and file storage have been massively popular for some time now, full cloud infrastructure is also on an aggressive upward trajectory; according to a Technavio report, the global virtual desktop market will grow at a pace of 11% percent each year through 2020.

While these trends are obviously good news to those of us in the cloud industry, this might actually be even better news for businesses who are moving toward a cloud model.

Start 2017 out right with effective workforce planning

Many organizations have intentions to develop a workforce planning strategy, but setbacks can occur. Employers are often so focused on the objectives of the current strategies that long-term planning gets pushed aside.

Another hurdle can be figuring out where to begin. Mapping-out long-term goals can be daunting because employers are not sure how specific their planning should be.

As difficult as it can be to get started, employers should consider the benefits of workforce planning.

Workforce planning is a process in which an organization reviews its personnel needs based on growth objectives. It involves a complete review and analysis of the number and type of employees that a company will need to meet its goals.

The fastest way to win (or lose) business on LinkedIn

If you want to win new business online, especially on LinkedIn, you have to go back to an era before computers (let alone the internet and social media) even existed.

For as long as human beings have been alive and doing business together, people have often decided who to give their trust, affection and money to based on some rather simple (and, some would argue, shallow) factors, including one's personal appearance and dress.

Love it or hate it, this is the truth about how business often gets done in-person and online.

Wolverine Wednesday: 2018 Recruiting

I'm sure Michigan isn't behind in 2018 recruiting but they only have two commits at this point.
Other current examples, Penn State has 10 commits (with two 5 stars), ND has 6, and Ohio State has 3.  With two big classes back to back and a small senior class,  I expect the 2018 class will be less then 20 players.

With the current quiet period, this is the time of year, where you will see Michigan blast out a 100 offers or so.  Just in the last couple of days:
  • CB Al Blades, Jr. got offered
  • Instate athlete Gemon Green got offered
  • FL CB Stanley Garner got offered
Those are just a few that we know of.   If your wondering who might be #1 on Michigan's board right now, my best guess is: QB  Dorian Thompson-Robinson who plays at Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman.  One issue is Dorian was very close to Jedd Fisch and now maybe trending more to UCLA then Michigan.   The Wolverines have a 69% lead in Crystals Ball right now.  This would be Jimmy's first dual threat QB recruit at Michigan.

  • Michigan and Penn State make top 10 for OL Nana Asiedu from VA

  • Jimmy is interviewing current Hawaii DC Kevin Lempa for a non-coaching analyst role.  My guess is Kevin believes this is better for his career then being the DC at Hawaii, he also has worked with Don Brown in the past.

  • Projected MSU starter on the offensive line, Thiyo Lukusa is leaving the program.

  • I was surprised to learn that after one game/National Championship that Steve Sarkisian is leaving Alabama to become the OC for the Super Bowl Atlanta Falcons.   There are rumors that Saban and Sark were having some similar disagreements that Saban had with Lane Kiffin's offense.

  • The Michigan Basketball team sure has had an up and down year.   This past week is an example:  this weekend Michigan loses to a poor OSU team at home and then blows out the Spartans last night.

Michigan Tuesday: Welcomes Brad Offically

There were two prospects that Michigan wanted if signing day didn't go 100% their way.   The first was a Syracuse DB commit Ifeatu Melifonwu.  The day before signing day, he decided not to risk a spot at Syracuse on NSD and re-committed to the Orangeman.  The other guy that Michigan was interested in was Westerville, OH punter Brad Robbins.    Brad was committed to Nevada but received an offer on NSD and accepted.    Yesterday, he signed his LOI and faxed it to Ann Arbor.

 Here is Brad's information:
  • He is 6'2 and 180 pounds
  • He averaged 41 yards per punt
  • Rated the #1 punter in the US by Kornblue Kicking
  • Listed as the No. 3 punter in the nation by ProKicker.com
  • Ranked as Kohl's Kicking's No. 4 punter in the nation
Brad had 5 offers from the likes of Nevada, Illinois, Navy, Rutgers and Michigan.

He is rated as a 2 star prospect from 24/7.  If Brad is consistent in Fall Camp, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't walk into the starting punter role.

Welcome Brad!

  • I don't know if I mentioned it here, but Curt Mallory is now the head coach at Indiana State, the fighting Larry Birds.   He just hired Roy Roundtree as their WR coach.    Congrats to Roy and maybe he can use some Snake Oil to flip a few WR's on the recruiting trail.  :)

  • Wisconsin hired former player Jim Leonhard has their DC

  • Recruiting is now officially in the "quiet period" which means no in-person contact, unless it's on campus.   Coaches can hit the road again on April 15th.

  • Michigan has offered 2018 TX 4 star RB Keaontay Ingram.

Michigan Monday: Tom Brady is the GOAT

Robert Deutsch/USA TODAY Sports
It's hard to have watched last nights Super Bowl and come away with words to describe what our eyes saw.  That game was over at 28-3 with the Falcons defense playing well and rushing Tom Brady.   The key to beating New England and Tom Brady has always been, get pressure with the front four.

That was exactly what was happening for two + quarters last night.  Until it wasn't.   An unbelievable Super Bowl for an unbelievable QB.   It feels so good that he is a Michigan Man!

(For those of you that might not understand GOAT - it stands for Greatest of All Time)

  • Now some bad news, many BHB readers have been wondering where the Michigan roster will loose a few players.  I believe with the 2017 recruiting class, Michigan is +3 over the 85 scholarship limit for next year.   We might have our first surprise and disappointing reduction to the roster.   The name is Freshman TE Devin Asiasi from California.   It seems Devin is having some serious family issues and has been back home for a couple of weeks.   Now it's expected that Devin will transfer to another school in California so he can be closer to his family.   There are more important things then Michigan football and I hope his family issues get resolved.

  • Devin is a talented young player that played in 12 games this year and even caught a TD.  Michigan is deep at that position but will feel the loss of this talented young TE.  There are also some rumors that Michigan could lose another offensive lineman.   There hasn't been any names tied to this rumor but it comes from a reliable insider source.    This loss could be a devastating one as Michigan is very thin at all offensive line positions.

  • If your wondering about Scout's bankruptcy.   It seems 24/7 was the highest and only bidder for the recruiting service. It's likely Sam Webb will end up at 24/7 over the next 6 months as many of the Scouts contracts will be picked up by 24/7.    This would be a good match as Sam is the #1 insider and 24/7 is one of the best recruiting services for Michigan Football.

Michigan Friday: Some Behind the Scenes Info in the Solomon Recruitment

Sam Webb from Scouts gave us a little behind the scenes information on Aubrey's recruitment.   It seems that after the Georgia FU Michigan video got released, Aubrey called Jimmy and re-committed to Michigan at the Army All-American Game.

Aubrey's mom was impressed by Jimmy and staff much more then the staff from Georgia or Alabama.

Aubrey also called Jimmy last week to ask for #5.

The Alabama stuff was clearly a fake out to give his announcement some suspense.

  • Remember when I had concerns about the WR recruiting and the fact that Michigan didn't have any commits?   That seems like a long time ago. Now we have the following:
5 Star Donovan People-Jones
4 Star Tarik Black
4 Star Nico Collins
4 Star Oliver Martin
4 Star Brad Hawkins

This has to be the best WR class in Michigan history and the #1 WR class in the country.   Anyone want to bet that Dylan McCaffery hasn't stopped smiling since Wednesday?  How about Pep Hamilton?  I bet he has a big smile as well.

  • 2018 LB Kolin Demens from Country Day got offered by UCLA this week.  I think you might recognize that last name.

  • Tim Hardaway went off in the 4th quarter last night for 23 points.

Enjoy the Super Bowl this weekend.   Hard to believe this is the last football game until September.  :(
