Michigan Monday: The BBQ at The Big House Fields Early Results

As you know, the BBQ at the Big House was this weekend and we got some good news already.   Let's take a quick look at the good news and one miss.

The food must have tasted great for these guys:

  • 2019 4 star OL Nolan Rumler from Akron, Ohio.  He is 6'4 and 300 pounds as high school junior and could get even bigger in the next two years before he arrives in Ann Arbor.    His offer list is an impressive one with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Pitt, Rutgers, and Syracuse.   Jimmy hasn't pulled a ton of recruits out of Ohio since arriving in Ann Arbor has head coach, this is a nice early win for the 2019 class.

  • 2019 5 Star DE Stephen Herron Jr. from Louisville.   Stephen is a very high 4 star to all the services (ESPN hasn't rated him yet) which puts him in 5 star range on the 24/7 composite.   Stephen is a guy that is going to add pounds and strength over the next two years as he is 6'4 and a light 225 pounds right now.   His offer list like Nolan's is an impressive one with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Louisville, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Syracuse, and Vanderbilt. Sounds like this coaches sold Stephen on being the next Taco Charlton in Ann Arbor.

  • 2018 4 Star IN LB Cameron McGrone will announce his decision at noon.  We will see if he liked the food at the BBQ.

This guy didn't like the BBQ choices:

  • 2019 QB JT Daniels was planning to visit Ann Arbor for the QB/WR camp this summer.  His plans changed last minute, so he flew out for the BBQ.  He saw what he needed to see in Ann Arbor and committed to USC last night.

More News and Notes from the weekend:

  • Michigan Insider Sam Webb has recently had some terrible family news.   Please keep he and his family in your prayers and thoughts.   When I first started writing this blog and wanted to see what it felt like being a real journalist, I sat next to him at a few Michigan games in the press box.  He is a very good guy and I hurt for the Webb family and their loss.

  • Michigan fans all remember Da'Shawn Hand picking Alabama over Michigan.  He was arrested for DUI over the weekend.  Bama opens against FSU in Atlanta in week 1.

  • Fall Camp opens today for the Wolverines.

  • Coach B must really love Illinois State's program because reports are he has hired the second assistant off that team in Luke Yaklich.  Luke's resume is full of coaching experience in the Chicago area and coaching AAU.  His specialty seems to be defense and his background should help recruiting in Illinois.  If your wondering, Illinois State finished 28-7 last year but missed the NCAA Tournament.

Anne Arundel County launches Defense Tech Toolbox

Guest feature: Rosa Cruz is the vice president of communications for Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation. Follow AAEDC on Facebook and Twitter.

Responding to a need for more effective resources for growing technology companies working in the national security space, Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC) today unveiled its Arundel Defense Tech Toolbox.

The toolbox offers a menu of financing, a workforce development grant and business development consultations specifically aimed at assisting technology companies with gross revenue of less than $5 million and fewer than 100 employees. To access the toolbox, businesses must be located in Anne Arundel County or have a signed lease demonstrating their intent to move into the county. AAEDC is investing $1.2 million to launch the program.

As home to Fort Meade and premier defense agencies such as the National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and U.S. Cyber Command, Anne Arundel County is the nation’s most prominent government and cyber technology hub. Over the course of several months, AAEDC staff gathered important feedback from technology business leaders on the challenges they face in the federal contracting and commercial markets.

“There are many of these businesses that have launched and invested in themselves in the early stage and have had initial success. The Arundel Defense Tech Toolbox provides meaningful assistance so they can reach the next stage of growth and create more jobs in our county and state,” said AAEDC CEO Julie Mussog. “This initiative signals our full commitment to supporting our tech industry in the national security space and maintaining Anne Arundel County’s reputation as the nation’s cyber capital.”

“The Arundel Defense Tech Toolbox will ensure the defense and cyber industries continue to fuel the economic engine of West County,” added County Executive Steve Schuh.

The signature component of the Arundel Defense Tech Toolbox is the Next Stage Tech Fund. This financing program offers zero percent loans from $50,000 to $250,000. Loans can be structured with flexible payment terms between one to five years to accommodate a company’s cash flow.

Michigan Thursday: New Michigan Basketball Assistant and Hello to Luke

Breaking news is that Coach B has filled one of his two assistant coaches openings on his bench.   Reports are that Illinois State assistant DeAndre Haynes who played his high school ball at Detroit Southwestern and was a point guard at Kent State has taken the job.   In 2006, DeAndre was named the MAC player of the year and played professionally in Belgium, Hungary, Germany and Finland.

This sounds like a good hire, for a young man with a lot of knowledge of the game, coaching guards, and recruiting the metro-Detroit area.   Welcome DeAndre!

Image result for DeAndre Haynes
spox.com

Welcome Luke Schoonmaker!

In this day and time, its rare we are surprised on the recruiting trail, its even rarer to hear a guy even has a Michigan offer.   That was the case for the 6'6 225 TE Luke Schoonmaker who the recruiting services didn't know even had a Michigan offer.   Rivals and ESPN didn't even have a profile for him.   That kind of status is usually reserved for preferred walk-ons.

It seems Luke got offered at the Sacred Heart satellite camp and keep the news to himself.  He plays in Connecticut and maybe not against the toughest competition in the world.   I of course trust the coaches and they like what they saw in Luke.   He had offers from Indiana, Rutgers, Temple, UConn, UMass and Toledo.

Tight End of course is a position of need in this class and Luke Ford (who just visited) and Mustapha Muhammad who has listed Michigan has his leader are still takes.   Luke Schoonmaker plays mostly QB in high school so he is for sure headed for a red shirt next season.   This looks like a Greg Frey type of TE that he can mold into a strong blocker and pass catcher.

Hopefully, Michigan will get more commitments this weekend for the BBQ at the Big House and the start of practice on Monday.

ELTA to open cyber center in Maryland

Governor Larry Hogan has announced that ELTA North America, a global leader in the design, manufacture, and support of innovative electronic systems, has selected Maryland for its new Cyber Innovation Center.

The announcement follows the May 2017 grand opening of ELTA’s new headquarters in Annapolis Junction, when the company upgraded from a 7,500-square-foot facility to a 21,500-square-foot-facility and announced plans to add as many as 50 new jobs. ELTA North America’s decision to locate the Cyber Innovation Center in Maryland is the direct result of negotiations between Governor Hogan and company leadership, including a site visit to ELTA’s Israeli headquarters, during the governor’s economic development and trade mission to Israel in September 2016.

“ELTA is a world-class defense company and we are proud that they have chosen to expand their operations and continue to manufacture the components for their cutting-edge defense systems here in Maryland,” said Governor Hogan.

“We are pleased to establish our footprint for cyber in Maryland,” said Eric Womble, CEO and president of ELTA North America. “We look forward to tapping into the state’s strong cybersecurity market and well-trained workforce.”

Wolverine Wednesday: Jourdan Found Not Guilty

Last night in the Jourdan Lewis domestic violence case, the jury deliberated about an hour and came back with a not guilty verdict for Jourdan.  Per the Dallas newsThe case centered around the use of a pillow during an argument about finances in the couple's apartment. The woman said Lewis struck her in the face so hard she was forced into a wall, but Lewis' defense attorney contended he simply tossed the pillow and was trying to leave.

"For him, before a jury, to have this exoneration and it's truly that, I hope everyone will recognize that's a real, real plus," Jones said. "He just didn't want there to be any question about that."
"I'm real proud for the Cowboys and proud for him. He's got a chance to really be a fine player and he is a good person.''

Domestic violence is a serious charge but I'm glad this worked out for Jourdan and his future in the NFL and with the Dallas Cowboys.

  • Jimmy spoke with the media at the Big Ten Media Day and said that the QB race is between Wilton, John, and Brandon.  We know that Jimmy loves to keep it competitive in camp but we also know Wilton is the leader in the clubhouse.  It might be a 3 way tie when camp opens on Monday, but the expectation is that Wilton has a strong grip on the job.

Michigan Tuesday: Is Happy For Derrick and Zak

Yesterday, Derrick Walton signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat.   I had no idea what a two-way contract was, so I headed over to UMHoops for some clarification:

A two-way contract allows players to split time between a team’s NBA roster and its NBA G-League roster throughout the season. These contracts essentially extend the NBA roster to a 16th and 17th NBA spot and allow a player to spend up to 45 days with the NBA team that signs him, the rest of the time must be spent in the G-League.

Players are paid a salary of $75,000 while with the G-League team — far more than the $26,000 allotted for a one-way G-League deal — and a salary consistent with the NBA rookie minimum of $816,000 while on the NBA roster. That means that a player on a two-way contract can make a total of $279,000 if they spend the maximum allotted 45 days in the NBA.

If you haven't heard, the D-League sold its right to Gatoraide and is now called the G-League. This is great news for Derrick coming off a great finish to his senior year and playing well in the Summer League.  I thought he might stick with Orlando but found a home in Florida with the Heat, who are known for finding diamonds in the rough and making them into very good NBA players.

  • Zak Irvin also signed a professional basketball contract yesterday with VL Pesaro in the Italian Serie A next season.  Good luck to Zak!

  • IL 4 star TE Luke Ford visited last weekend and enjoyed his time, per 24/7:  "It was amazing," Ford said. "Me and Jim hit it off. I got to talk with him for two hours and could've talked more. Greg Frey was awesome to hangout with. Facilities were nice and loved the campus."  Luke and his father say that Michigan is now tied a top of their board with Alabama, Texas, and Georgia.  Bama is the presumed leader for Luke.

Celebrate This Summer With Maryland Crabs

Guest feature: Julie Oberg is the Communications Director for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Follow along with MDA @MdAgDept and Maryland’s Best @MdsBest.

As summer gets underway, it is time for Marylanders to get reacquainted with one of the state’s most beloved pastimes: enjoying fresh, locally sourced and produced crab meat.

It is hard to beat the time-honored tradition and communal experience of feasting on steamed crabs with friends and family, but there are many different ways to enjoy Maryland blue crabs: soups, crab imperial, or the classic Maryland crab cake.

“Here in Maryland, few things are more iconic than the Chesapeake blue crab,” said Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. “The relationship between farmers and watermen goes back to the beginning of our state’s history, and summer is the perfect time to enjoy all of the fresh, local products available statewide.”

Maryland is currently enjoying an abundant crab population, thanks in part to improving water quality. Sediment entering the Chesapeake Bay is down, which has caused an increase in oxygen levels and submerged aquatic vegetation. On its annual report card grading Chesapeake Bay health, scientists at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science gave the bay’s fisheries index an “A” at 90 percent.

“Crabs are plentiful this spring and prices are down,” said Jack Brooks of the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Industry Association. “It’s a great time to take advantage of this unique bargain and feast on Maryland crabs.”

About 50 percent of the U.S. blue crab production is from the Chesapeake Bay, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Michigan Monday: Former Wolverine News

  • Denard is getting a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys.  Dallas could have Denard, Taco, and Jourdan all on the same team.  Nice!

  • As you know, Jourdan's trial starts today and is only predicted to last a couple of days.  Hopefully, it is resolved in the best possible way for all parties.

  • Jabrill Peppers signs a 10.3M four year contract with a $5.6M signing bonus with the Browns.   Congratulations, This is life changing money and I hope he is smart with every dollar!

  • Jimmy takes a staff member from RR.  Reports are that Jimmy has hired Arizona's Matt Dudek as Michigan's next Director of Recruiting.   It seems Matt is well liked and a very good hire.   Inside Joke: Should we let Matt recruit defensive players?  Just kidding Matt, welcome!

  • Don't forget the BBQ at the Big House is this weekend.  We will have more on it as we get closer to the event.

  • Instate recruit Vincent Gray, a three-star cornerback from Rochester committed to Mizzu on Friday.  Vincent wasn't on Michigan's radar.

Local lacrosse company aims to dominate industry

While navigating their way toward accounting careers at Towson University, Mike and Greg Kenneally thought of lacrosse as nothing more than a passion and a hobby. Six years later, the brothers have expanded their high-performance lacrosse equipment company, East Coast Dyes (ECD), exponentially due to its innovative technology and Maryland location.

“Greg was always the go-to person in college for fixing equipment issues,” said Mike. “When he told us he was going to tackle the issue of lacrosse mesh failing in wet weather, we said go for it. He made the whole house smell awful while coming up with the wax mesh solution.”

But the results were undeniable.

The product generated more than 800 orders during the company’s first Cyber Monday sale in 2012. Mike told his brother they had created something special and the CPA duo took an unexpected change in careers. What started as a group of college buddies cranking out orders in their Baltimore County home transformed into a full-scale operation at a 2,000-square-foot facility in Lutherville by May 2013.

“Mesh hadn’t really been innovated until we played with the wax idea,” Mike said. “Between that technology and our ability to network in a state with a deep history rooted in lacrosse, we’ve been able to expand our presence across the country.”

Last year, ECD relocated a third time to a 21,000-square-foot facility with a built-in turf field in Towson. The company acts as a manufacturing and wholesale online retailer for dealers locally and nationally with buyers including LAX World, Lacrosse Unlimited, and lax.com. They are also the proud sponsor of University of Maryland, Loyola, Towson, and Navy lacrosse teams. ECD is looking to be the go-to source for athletes seeking the best in equipment.

“We want to make the best shaft, head, and mesh combo in the business,” Mike said. “Our recent expansion and Maryland’s job pool of lacrosse savvy employees is going to make that possible.”

ECD is a recipient of the Baltimore County Boost Fund, a loan program provided through the Maryland Department of Commerce that puts revenue from the state’s video lottery terminals to work for small, minority, woman, and veteran-owned businesses. For more information about ECD visit eastcoastdyes.com.

Michigan Friday: A Frozen Nutt at Ole Miss

We all could see this coming.   Back in the 2013 recruiting class it looked like Laquan Treadwell was heading to Ann Arbor to fix all of our WR problems.   He surprisingly committed to Ole Miss and posted on social media a photo holding a ton of money.  Ole Miss had a great recruiting class that year and everyone and their brother knew they were paying recruits.   After more and more issues popped up, including the NFL Draft night photos and text messages about Laremy Tunsil taking money from coaches and doing drugs, the NCAA finally woke up and did an investigation.

What was the strategy with the NCAA?  It was to protect Hugh Freeze and the current staff and run the bus over former head man Houston Nutt.   Hugh as you might remember from the comments about taking time away from his family about Jimmy's Satellite Camps a few summers ago.

This strategy of blaming Nutt was a strange one as most Universities are willing to fire their head coach hoping the NCAA goes soft on them.   Ole Miss went the other direction and tried to protect Hugh Freeze.

Guess who wasn't a big fan of this strategy? Houston Nutt who filed a law suit against Ole Miss after it was clear he was going to be the fall guy.

Houston Nutt resigned from Arkansas (Nutt left Arkansas to go to Ole Miss) due to his own text issue, as he had 2000 texts to a local news anchor he was rumored to be having an affair with.  Nutt spent 4 years at Ole Miss with his last two years (2010-2011) going 1-15 in the SEC.  He was fired in November 2011 and Freeze took over.

So what prompted Hugh Freeze to resign yesterday, 6 weeks before the season and after SEC Media Day?

During the investigation into Ole Miss, Nutt's attorney found a strange 313 Detroit phone number on Freeze's phone record.   After some research, they found that number was to a Tampa based escort service.   The day Freeze was speaking at SEC Media days, Nutt's attorney sent that information to the leaders at Ole Miss.

Hugh Freeze resigns yesterday and declines to have ever called an escort service.  Game over.

  • Reports are that former NFL personnel guy Tom Gamble who worked with Jimmy in San Francisco is coming to Ann Arbor to work on Jimmy's non-coaching staff.   Probably in a recruiting or operations role.

  • Jourdan Lewis's trial starts on Monday.  I'm surprised they couldn't plea this out before going to trial.   They expect the trial to only last a couple of days and probably be wrapped up on Tuesday.

  • The recruitment of IN LB Cameron McGrone and NJ Athlete Shayne Simon seem to be coming down to Michigan vs. ND battle.  The Fighting Irish are having a surprisingly good year on the recruiting trail coming off a losing record and a coach on the hot seat.

Michigan Thursday: It's Pretty Quiet Right Now

We are 12 days from fall camp opening and things seem pretty quiet around Michigan's Football Program at the moment.   They call it Fall Camp because they are preparing for the Fall season even though camp starts in July and wraps up at the end of August.

  • 2019 4 Star OLB Spencer Lytle will be visiting Ann Arbor on July 26

  • Urban Meyer texted Jeremy Ruckert's girlfriend and his girlfriends mom to help get him to OSU.   Jeremy seemed to like it, I think its a bit creepy.

  • Wilton Speight has been named to the Davey O'Brien Watch List and the Golden Arm Watch list

  • Michigan is expecting a big visitor a week from Saturday on 7/29 at the BBQ at the Big House, it's 4 star Indy LB Cameron McGrone who visited Ann Arbor on 6/22 and attended Nike's Opening earlier this month.

  • DJ Durkin and Maryland Football have a new indoor practice facility.  Which should help recruiting.

Computer animation

Computer animation is the art of creating moving images via the use of computers.

It is a subfield of computer graphics and animation.

Increasingly it is created by means of 3D computer graphics, though 2D computer graphics are still widely used for low bandwidth and faster real-time rendering needs.

Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but it sometimes the target is another medium, such as film.

It is also referred to as CGI (Computer-generated imagery or computer-generated imaging), especially when used in films.

To create the illusion of movement, an image is displayed on the computer screen then quickly replaced by a new image that is similar to the previous image, but shifted slightly.

This technique is identical to how the illusion of movement is achieved with television and motion pictures.

Computer animation is essentially a digital successor to the art of stop motion animation of 3D models and frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations.

For 3D animations, objects (models) are built on the computer monitor (modeled) and 3D figures are rigged with a virtual skeleton.

For 2D figure animations, separate objects (illustrations) and separate transparent layers are used, with or without a virtual skeleton.

Then the limbs, eyes, mouth, clothes, etc. of the figure are moved by the animator on key frames.

The differences in appearance between key frames are automatically calculated by the computer in a process known as tweening or morphing.

Finally, the animation is rendered.

For 3D animations, all frames must be rendered after modeling is complete.

For 2D vector animations, the rendering process is the key frame illustration process, while tweened frames are rendered as needed.

For pre-recorded presentations, the rendered frames are transferred to a different format or medium such as film or digital video.

The frames may also be rendered in real time as they are presented to the end-user audience.

Low bandwidth animations transmitted via the internet (e.g. 2D Flash, X3D) often use software on the end-users computer to render in real time as an alternative to streaming or pre-loaded high bandwidth animations.

Wolverine Wednesday: Wants To Go To Maui

  • Michigan Basketball gets LSU in the first round of the Maui Invitational.  Now that is a trip you want to plan with your family!

  • Speaking of Michigan Basketball, Coach B has yet to replace the two assistant coaches he lost.

  • 2019 QB Michael Johnson Jr. got offered by Tennessee and Alabama yesterday.

  • 2019 5 Star RB Quavaris Crouch is planning a visit to Ann Arbor.

  • 2018 3-star OT Jalen Goss will visit Ann Arbor officially next season.

  • Sam Webb says that Michigan will "kick the tires" on Oregon DL transfer Rutger Reitmaier.  Rutger picked Oregon over Michigan and stayed with that commitment after the coaching change.  Now he is transferring and I expect him to stay home and go to Tennessee.  With the loss of Corey Malone-Hatcher, Rutger would be a great replacement for the Wolverines.

Michigan Tuesday: He is Playing Where Edition?

Michigan Basketball walk-on Andrew Dakich has been planning a 5th year transfer for sometime.  It seemed every time Coach B was planning to redshirt him, Michigan had an injury at the guard position and had to use him to fill some minutes off the bench.

Andrew had announced earlier this year that he was heading to Quinnipiac to spend his 5th and final year in college.  Well, there seems to be a change of plans and a program in Columbus is in serious need of some guard help.   That's right folks, ESPN tweeted Andrew is heading to Ohio State to play his 5th a final year.   I can see both sides of this, OSU of course is greater then Quinnipiac, but then again its OSU.   Reports are that Dakich will be on scholarship at Ohio State.

Speaking of strange decisions, The number one TE in the country Jeremy Ruckert committed to Ohio State on Monday afternoon.   This decision was not a surprise and many insiders predicted it.   He picked Ohio State over Michigan and Wisconsin.   That is a strange decision as Ohio State really doesn't use TE's in their offense too often.  Reports are that Urban has told him that he will change his offense for Jeremy.  Ok, good luck with that decision.

  • Drake Johnson got his 6th year from the NCAA and will participate in track at Michigan and won't be on the football team.   That is a good decision and I wish Drake all the best!

  • Jimmy on Corey Malone-Hatcher:  "It's something that Corey, in conjunction with the doctors and the trainers, decided it was in his best interests and the right path for him to take," Harbaugh said. "I support it, from the standpoint of being very supportive of what the doctors and Corey thought was best." -- "He's still in school," Harbaugh confirmed. "It's a disappointment for his family, for him, for us coaches and for everybody in terms of football, there were high hopes there. I thought he said it very well, I can still get a great education, I can still be a great Michigan man and be able to participate as a student intern if he so chooses. There are other ways that he can contribute."

  • 2018 Safety from Miami, Randy Russell Jr. has Michigan in his top 5.

Going off the Board:

I don't know if we have any History Channel fans out there, but there is a new series called The American Ripper.  The premise of the show is they are trying to solve the mystery of London's Jack the Ripper identity.    This series is trying to prove that American serial killer and con man H.H. Holmes could have been Jack the Ripper.

HH has ties to the University of Michigan.  He actually graduated from U of M's Department of Medicine and Surgery in 1882.  He went on to run a bunch of insurance scams in Chicago and even opened a hotel that was latter nicknamed the Murder Castle.  After years on the run and more murders and scams, HH was hung on May 7th, 1896 in a prison in Philadelphia.

Made in Maryland product to be featured on Steve Harvey’s FUNDERDOME

It’s not every day that a Maryland-made product gets its claim to fame on national television.

Back in 2010, Steve McLaughlin was attending his son’s basketball practice, watching with a mixture of laughter and concern as the team slid across the court in their brand new basketball shoes. The slippery surface sparked McLaughlin’s creativity, and now seven years later, his solution is set to be featured on Steve Harvey’s new reality series, FUNDERDOME.

“It was like something out of comedy show – as the team would change direction, all the players would wipe out,” McLaughlin said. “The boys couldn’t play well and with the potential for injury with falls like that, I knew we had to find a way to get better traction on the court.”

McLaughlin – a Harford County native and current resident of York, PA – has always had a knack for fabricating solutions to everyday problems; even as a child, McLaughlin would repair his own sports equipment. After that disastrous basketball practice, he and his son Seth spent the following weeks tinkering with ways to get improved, sustainable traction on the court. From there, Court Grabbers was born.

The lightweight system laces onto athletic shoes to restore traction. Court Grabbers includes clear Base Strips that attach to the shoe using the laces, cloth Traction Pads, and a bottle of Traction Gel. When used together, the system maintains athlete’s traction for indoor sports without the need to reapply mid-game or resort to old, unsanitary practices like licking your hands and wiping your shoes.

“Court Grabbers improves player’s performance by providing consistent traction as well as court safety and health.” McLaughlin said. “Between injuries and falling during play, this solves a lot of problems for today’s court athletes.”

Court Grabbers has already sold its product to 15 countries for 16 different sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton, and racquetball. The product is marketed, manufactured, and shipped from the Greater Baltimore area and McLaughlin credits the team effort of Maryland’s local businesses in making it a success. Harbor Designs in Baltimore City, Prime Manufacturing in Savage, and Pack-It, LLC in Hunt Valley are all responsible for making Court Grabbers a reality. The company hopes to dramatically increase its numbers after an appearance on FUNDERDOME, where products compete for funding through audience participation.

“It’s my hope that our appearance on the show will give us the exposure to really take this technology to its full potential,” McLaughlin said. “I’m hoping sports giants like Nike and Under Armour will see that this product is valuable to athletes of all ages in variety of sports around the world. Even the most expensive shoes are ineffective in dealing with the dust on the court that causes slippage. Our equipment gives your shoe the traction the manufacturer can’t.”

Watch Court Grabbers compete on FUNDERDOME this Sunday, July 23, at 9PM EDT on ABC. For more information about Court Grabbers visit courtgrabbers.com.

Michigan Monday: Plays The Recruiting Name Game

Many of us remember the 2017 instate LB recruit David Reese.  He was committed to the Wolverines for a long time and wanted to enroll early.  Coach Harbaugh told David and his family that they didn't have room for him to enroll in January and David decided to open up his recruitment and committed to Florida.  David played as a true freshman and will get reunited with his friends from Michigan in Dallas in a couple of months.

Now Michigan is recruiting another David Reese in the 2018 class.   You guessed it, this David Reese lives in Florida and plays LB.   David is being recruiting by Don Brown.

  • If you Google or Bing the name Michael Thompson, you will get the former NBA basketball player and a Guitarist.  Neither of these guys are interesting to Jimmy and Don Brown.   The Michael Thompson they are interested in, is a 4 star DT from St. Louis where Michigan just made his top 5 with Ohio State, Alabama, Missouri, and LSU.    Michael will visit Ann Arbor later this month.

  • IL TE Luke Ford is visiting Ann Arbor this weekend.   Is there a better place for a Ford then in the State of Michigan?

  • CJ Smith a former 2018 Safety commit to Florida has recently re-opened his recruitment and lists Michigan in his top 5 with Oregon, Louisville, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

  • TE Jeremy Ruckert is announcing this afternoon and has Michigan in his final group with OSU, ND, and Wisconsin.   Insiders predict and agree its an OSU decision.

  • Remember the name Michael Johnson Jr.?  He is the 2019 4 star QB that Jimmy got a ton of press for trying to hire his father.  Dad ended up at Oregon and Jimmy offered the son last week.  Jr. is saying he is open to playing at other schools.

  • Remember the name Rutger Reitmaier?  He was a 2017 DT recruit that Brady Hoke convinced to play at Oregon.  He is leaving the Ducks program and now might head to Tennessee to play for the former Michigan head man.

What Your SEO Guys Are Up To? BrightEdge Will Tell You

JC Penney gets put in purgatory at Google for link farming. AT&T, Siemens and others are buying SEO links on Forbes and get busted. Employees of these brands may or may not have known exactly what was going on. But I’m guessing more than a few execs were unpleasantly surprised by the news.

Wondering who exactly is doing what to your brand out there in SEOland, and how bad of a hit you might take? Then you may want to use a tool that will show you the warning signs of link farming. SEO firm BrightEdge is giving people a free tool to do this. The timing of it couldn’t be better.

The new tool, called BrandSafe Link Audit, is “a new, free analysis and alert product that can expose disreputable SEO techniques to CMOs before they end up in the headlines.” It tells you about the quality of backlinks to your sites and whether or not you may be at risk from paid links and link farms.

Facebook now lets you cast videos to your TV

Facebook wants you to lean back and watch its News Feed videos on your television with a new feature that lets you stream clips via Apple TV, AirPlay devices, Google Chromecast, and Google Cast devices. The move could help Facebook generate more video ad revenue, and increase usage time by giving people the richest possible viewing experience while at home.

The feature is now available on iOS and will come to Android soon. To use it, just find a video in the feed on your phone or desktop, tap the TV button in the top right, and then select the device you want to stream through.

You can keep scrolling through the feed and using Facebook while the video continues to stream. That allows Facebook to become both the first and second screen, a strategy Periscope is pursuing differently by allowing professional content broadcasts to be piped into Periscope and Twitter via its new Producer feature.

Microsoft Is Stuck On The Windows Treadmill

Microsoft’s Windows Phone president Andy Lees basically said that WinPho 7 (or any other version of Windows Phone) would not land on tablets any time soon. “We view the tablet as a PC,” he stated at a Worldwide Partners Conference. That’s kind of sad.

Windows is great on laptops and desktops but consistently, time and time and time again, Windows has failed on tablets. Take the HP Slate 500 for example: it was an impressive piece of hardware that, in the end, is just another Windows slate.

HP knew it, too, just as everyone else did when they started pumping out Android tablets. Clearly, HP bought WebOS to capitalize on the tablet craze without resorting to have to sell “enterprise” tabets like the Slate to consumers. That probably won’t work, but it shows the lengths to which manufacturers are going to grab a good OS for their current products.

Microsoft is taking the slow and steady approach. Windows 8 should be much more tablet friendly and much more usable for the general consumer. And then Microsoft will do what they’ve always done: lock manufacturers into Windows 8 “flights” i.e. forcing them to make at least one Win8 tablet to go alongside the desktops and laptops they are sure to churn out. They pulled a similar stunt with Windows 7. Ever wonder why almost every hardware manufacturer made a touchscreen all-in-one that no one wanted? Because Microsoft told them to. So you’re at least sure of five or six Windows 8 slates to roll through town, perhaps by next CES.

But in this post-PC world, people still want a good tablet. Heck, they may even, as Patrick Moorhead suggests go for “convertible PCs,” PCs that are merely a tablet propped up next to a keyboard and mouse a la the Atrix. While I find that a hard sell, it could happen.

Apple could be using drones to improve Apple Maps data

Apple is putting a lot of effort to improve its Apple Maps data and design. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the company plans to use drones to track changes and improve mapping data over time. It would apparently be faster to use a fleet of drones rather than vans with sensors.

Apple already admitted that mapping data is a harder problem than the company first anticipated. You need to update maps all the time and fix mistakes as quickly as possible. Roads change and new buildings keep popping up. That’s why the company now works with thousands of employees in India and elsewhere to work on mapping data.

But that’s just one part of the equation. Having a big moderation staff is useless if you don’t have fresh data coming from all over the world. Companies like Google and Apple rely on user reports and vehicles driving around multiple countries.

Bloomberg found a 2015 document from the Federal Aviation Administration. The administration granted Apple a license to “operate an unmanned aircraft system to conduct data collection, photography, and videography.” It also says that the company plans to buy drones from DJI and Aibotix for this operation.

Now, it’s unclear if Apple already started using these drones in the U.S. and in other countries. As it’s not a user-facing feature, nothing stops Apple from using drones without telling its users.

In other news, Apple also acquired Indoor.io for indoor mapping. Bloomberg got an official confirmation from Apple. Apple has already made another acquisition of an indoor mapping company and is playing catch up on this front.

Snap shares fall below IPO price for the first time

Shares of Los Angeles technology company Snap Inc. on Monday dipped below the original price at which they were sold when the company went public in March.

Snap shares traded as low as $16.95 before closing at $16.99, down about 1.1%. The company went public at $17.

Falling below an IPO price for the first time is a common occurrence. It happened to Facebook. It happened to Twitter, Tesla and Fitbit. And by various accounts, half of publicly traded companies sit below their initial price for extended periods.

But it remains a worrisome signal to investors, one that points to waning confidence in the Snapchat app-maker’s ability to deliver on promises of increased usage and ad sales in the coming years.

Snapchat reports 166 million daily users of its service, which includes short photo and video messages that automatically delete after viewing. But investors fear that competition from Facebook-owned Instagram is cutting into Snapchat’s popularity.

Snap, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, hasn't announced when it will release financial results for the second quarter.

In Snap’s defense, the drop in share price comes as investors rethink their bets on tech companies across the board. Though few financial experts appear to doubt the potential of Facebook, Alphabet, Microsoft and other huge tech businesses, fund managers have raised concerns about whether the prices they’ve paid to get a stake in the firms is too high.

Enough investors have been skeptical to drive down prices in recent days. The technology sector within the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has dropped about 3% since the start of June, after returning more than 20% during the first five months of 2017.

Shares of Snap, a 6-year-old tech company that doesn’t generate profit, now trade for 32 times its sales, compared with an average of about four times sales among the S&P 500’s tech constituents, according to FactSet data.

Financial analysts more bullish about Snap's prospects say now is the perfect time to buy shares because going back to $17 creates a second IPO in effect. Individuals and other small-time investors who didn’t have a chance to get shares the first time around — as Snap focused instead on major institutions — may find the opportunity especially attractive.

“I want to own it here," Brian White, an analyst at stock brokerage Drexel Hamilton said on CNBC last month.

But Snap's share price may yet fall further as investors brace for an increase in supply of stock beginning as early as July 29. That’s when the lifting of trading restrictions on shares held by employees and others prior to the IPO is expected to start pushing the number of shares eligible for sale to about five times the amount currently available.

The end of such lock-up agreements after an IPO usually coincide with a slide in price in preceding weeks because investors guess at least some in the company ranks will sell, according to financial analysts. It's unclear, though, if any Snap executives or venture capital backers plan to sell.

Many of the shares expected to be newly eligible for trade are held by Snap co-founders Evan Spiegel, the chief executive, and Bobby Murphy, the chief technology officer. Other big owners include Benchmark and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Qualcomm wants some iPhone imports banned

Qualcomm Inc. fired back at Apple Inc. on Thursday in a fierce legal battle over patents, asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to ban the import of certain new models of iPhones.

The San Diego-based company alleges that Apple is infringing on six patents issued between 2013 and 2017 that improve performance and battery life in smartphones. It filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in San Diego and is seeking a limited ban from the International Trade Commission on iPhones made by contract manufacturers in Asia.

Apple has been “infringing these patents knowingly, willingly for quite some time now in their new phones,” said Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s general counsel. “We decided — frankly, sparked by all their litigation efforts against us — that we weren’t going to just defend ourselves, which we will do very vigorously, but we were going to have to go on the attack.”

As a practical matter, Qualcomm is seeking a limited ban on iPhone 7s that contain cellular modem chips made by Intel Corp. and run on AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s networks.

Qualcomm supplies Apple with cellular modems for iPhone 7s on Verizon and Sprint, as well as older iPhones on all U.S. networks. It is not seeking to ban imports of iPhones that use its own chips.

Qualcomm also alleges certain iPads are using the six patents without a license.

If the ITC rules in Qualcomm’s favor, an import ban could block some upcoming iPhone 8 models, which are expected to launch this fall.

It is unknown how Apple splits its modem supply between Qualcomm and Intel for the iPhone 8. But given the legal battle between the two tech giants, analysts believe Intel may have won the larger share.

In January, Apple filed a lawsuit attacking the core of Qualcomm’s patent licensing business model — alleging that Qualcomm is collecting patent royalties on technology that it had nothing to do with inventing. Antitrust regulators in the U.S. and South Korea have brought similar legal actions.

Apple’s contract iPhone manufacturers in China and Taiwan have stopped paying royalties to Qualcomm at Apple’s behest, leading Qualcomm to cut its financial forecast for the year.

On Thursday, an Apple spokesman reiterated a statement issued earlier this month when Apple amended its original lawsuit.

"Qualcomm’s illegal business practices are harming Apple and the entire industry,” the company said. “They supply us with a single connectivity component, but for years have been demanding a percentage of the total cost of our products — effectively taxing Apple's innovation.”

Qualcomm says regulators have been spurred on by Apple in an effort to lower Apple’s costs. According to Qualcomm, without Qualcomm cellular technology, the iPhone is little more than a glorified iPod.

An iPhone 7 sells for $700 or more, and Qualcomm receives about $10 per iPhone for use of its thousands of cellular technology patents, according to estimates from analysts at Canaccord Genuity.

Persuading the ITC to issue a ban could be an uphill battle for Qualcomm. Even if it succeeds, the decision could be vetoed by the Trump administration. Samsung won a ban on iPhone imports in a long-running patent dispute with Apple in 2013, but it was overturned by the Obama administration.

In May, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook told analysts that he didn’t think the ITC would ban iPhones because Apple has been willing to license Qualcomm’s technology but has not received what it considers to be fair terms.

“I don’t believe anyone is going to enjoin the iPhone based on that,” he said at the time. “I think there is plenty of case law around that subject. But we shall see.”

Rosenberg, however, said there is no case law that helps Apple in this action.

“These are good patents. These are patents that are clearly infringed by the iPhone,” Rosenberg said.

The six patents are not essential to cellular standards and are not included in Qualcomm’s existing license agreements with Apple’s contract iPhone makers, Rosenberg said.

Verizon customer data — including phone numbers and PINs — exposed by vendor

Names and phone numbers of millions of Verizon customers were made available on a publicly accessible storage area owned by one of the company’s vendors, according an enterprise security software company that discovered the exposed data.

“Anyone entering a URL in a browser would have been able to access it,” said Dan O’Sullivan, cyber-resilience analyst with UpGuard, the Mountain View, Calif., company that found the data.

Exposed were text files logging calls made this year to Verizon call centers between Jan. 1 and June 22, O’Sullivan said. In most cases, the logs included the names, phone numbers and addresses of Verizon subscribers. In some cases, account personal identification numbers used to verify callers’ identities were also exposed, O’Sullivan said.

The storage area belonged to Nice Systems, a Verizon vendor which does business related to call-center management. UpGuard informed Verizon of its findings on June 13, O’Sullivan said. A week later, access was shut off.

PayPal now an option in Apple’s online stores

Apple will allow PayPal payments in its digital stores, offering customers another check-out option on iTunes, iBooks, Apple Music and the App Store.

The partnership, rolled out Tuesday in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Mexico, Australia and parts of Europe, lets users choose the San Jose-based secure payment service — a platform that many online shoppers are comfortable with, said Brendan Miller, a payments expert and analyst at Forrester.

“PayPal is by far the most used digital payment method besides debit and credit cards,” Miller said. “That alone will mean more transactions for Apple from customers who might have been leery of using their payment information online. This translates to less carts left abandoned in checkout.”

Miller said he talks to retailers who see 20% or more of their online transactions go through PayPal. More than 40% of U.S. adults online have used PayPal in the last three months to pay for a product or service, according to data from Forrester.

PayPal will also integrate with Siri and bring PayPal’s One Touch feature to Apple ID accounts, allowing for purchases with fewer clicks, PayPal said in a statement.

Customers with an Apple ID will be able to select “PayPal” as a preferred payment method — once selected it will become the default payment method and all future purchases will be charged to the PayPal account. This includes one-time purchases as well as monthly fees such as Apple Music subscriptions and iCloud storage, PayPal said in a statement.

Apple has its own wallet feature, Apple Pay. Miller said he doesn’t foresee a competition between the two transaction methods, but rather a partnership.

“It’s not a win-lose battle,” Miller said. “I think we’ll see a lot more partnerships in this space.”

Moshe Katri, managing director and analyst covering payments at Wedbush, said PayPal’s model that appeals to both merchants and consumers is what is driving its growth and leading to partnerships.

“This means that Apple isn’t out to destroy PayPal with their [Apple Pay] feature,” Katri said. “Apple doesn’t care what people are using to pay — they are agnostic in that sense — all they want to do is sell.”

5 Things you should know before hiring an SEO Company

If your business website is not found on Google or other search engines, then you are losing a big chunk of business from potential customers and your competitors are leveraging the benefits of the same. You’ve developed your website but if you are not doing SEO, then it’s of no use. Building a website without SEO is like building a road without directions; you know your business exist but your potential customers don’t. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft once said, “If you are business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business” & to showcase your business website on web, you need to hire SEO agency for marketing of your website.

Since there is a huge pool of SEO companies on the web, it’s becomes a daunting task as how to select the right agency who can enhance your visibility on search engines. Choosing the right one could be the most lucrative thing you ever do for your company but on the flip side, if you happen to work with some fraud company, then it could be your biggest mistake for your business. It’s very important to select the right SEO agency for the growth & visibility of your business on the web. So before hiring them, do your homework and get ready to ask below questions which will help you in knowing their worth for your business.

#1: What is their SEO experience?

As they say, “Experience makes the man a perfect”; this is indeed true with SEO agencies as well. You should ask them about their experience in handling SEO projects and since how many years they are into this. Is it a startup company or a well-established firm? Getting this information will make you clear about their background, experience and most importantly the team that will be responsible for handling your project.

Once you have acquired the information, have a look at their website, social media channels, blog and company reviews available on the web. Since most of the SEO companies keep them up-to-date with the latest information and news on their blogs, so it’s a good indication about their credibility.

#2: What all services they offer?

Since online marketing is very wide industry, you need an agency that can not only offer SEO services but a complete range of digital marketing services. With SEO, you also need content writing, email marketing, pay per click services, social media marketing etc., in order to promote your business online from panoramic view.

If you get an agency that can offer you all these services under one single roof, then it’s very easy for you to garner the benefits of marketing as you can manage all your marketing practices easily and with common goals.

#3: Explore their client portfolio?

The other way to get more information about company’s background and work experience to ask them for the client portfolio. Browse through the various clientele projects they have done during their tenure and this will guide in getting the exact information about which other businesses are using their services and have hired them for marketing.

It’s always beneficial to hire an SEO agency that has a prior niche experience of your industry as their team knows very well about the strategies to be implemented for optimum results and rankings.

#4: How they will communicate and what about the progress reports?

After hiring an SEO agency, it’s vital to have a regular communication with the single person or project manager who is in charge of your project.  Periodic communication about the project status will make you clear as what they are doing and where your business is heading with their marketing efforts. Not only this, but you should also ask them, What type of marketing progress reports they will be sharing on daily or weekly basis? This is again very important as it will give you in-depth insights into the marketing efforts put by them.

Usually with the big companies, it becomes bit difficult to communicate easily as they follow a system wherein every time a different person from the support department responds to your question. However with small companies or freelancers, the communication flow is much easier as you always interact with the same person who is handling your project.

#5: What are their SEO packages?

Now comes the most important part of hiring an SEO agency – the pricing. SEO or let’s say digital marketing is not a low cost solution. So get ready to include SEO marketing expenses in your monthly budget spending. Mostly SEO agencies follow two types of pricing: hourly or fixed priced. In hourly pricing, they charge you on per hour basis while in the later; you agreed upon to give a fixed price per month for the project. Keep one thing in mind that to get the good results, you’ve to invest in quality & result oriented SEO services.

In the long run, whatever you’ve invested in SEO, your business will reap its benefits as you will be getting more business and sales. So while selecting the SEO company, you need to look deeply into: How they are going to charge you? Will it be per project, per hour or monthly? How much you need to pay and when? Do you need to pay some advance amount before starting the project? Get clear idea about all these things and it’s always recommended to pay them after the completion of the work, for instance, at the end of each month.

So now you are aware about what to look out for before hiring an SEO agency. You’ve done research on our part and you must wondering as which is the best SEO company you should hire that can give you results under your budget. There are plenty of SEO companies available but you need to select the best amongst them, who with their years of expertise can help you in getting more ROI.

Publishing your Android App on Google Play Store: What you need to know?

After spending endless hours on design, development and testing your first ever Android application, you are all set to launch it on the Google Play store. Having user base of more than 1 billion in more than 190 countries across the globe, Android dominates the mobile app market and with your mobile app, you are into the right direction of getting closer to your target audience. Publishing your Android app on Google Play store is a simple and easy process so here we bring you a “how to” step-by-step guide on publishing your first Android app on the Google store. So let’s get started.

#1 Create a Developer account:

Before getting your app launched on Google Play store, you need to get your developer/publisher profile registered on Google Play Developer Console – a dedicated dashboard for developers that lets you manage your apps in the Play store. For registration, you need to pay small one-time registration fees of $25 which you need to pay before uploading an app. Once the payment is completed, you’ll get a verification email to your registered email address and that’s all, you are done and ready to get hold of your app publishing.

#2 Complete the Account details:

To complete the developer profile and account details, log in to the Developer Console with your email address and password and proceed by filling the basic account details along with Developer name, which will be displayed on the Google store. After filling the complete information, your account will be in review status and it will be live in approximately 48 hours (the official time frame given).

#3 Get familiar with Developer Console:

Till the account is in review status, in the meanwhile, get yourself accustomed to Google Developer Console which is a focal point and primary dashboard for complete management of your apps. Here, you need to get familiar with the list of developer and merchant countries. The developer countries list will give you an idea about all the locations where distribution to Google Play users is supported whereas the merchant countries are those locations wherein you can sell your apps or have in-app purchases.

#4 Link Google Payments Merchant account:

If you want to sell apps or have subscriptions or have in-app purchases, then it is required to link your Google Payments merchant account with your developer profile. This linked payments account will be used for releasing monthly payouts from sales as well as for financial and tax identification.

#5 Alpha & Beta testing the app:

Testing your Android app thoroughly before making it live on the Play store is very important as this will act as a catalyst in the success of your app. Google Play store gives you the option of testing the app. In the “APK” section, you will see the options of “Beta Testing” & “Alpha Testing”. Once you’ve uploaded the app’s “.apk” files, you will get the test URL which you can share with your testers for further testing and be resolving bugs (if any). This testing phase is vital for the success of your app as testers will share their feedback by downloading the app’s alpha or beta versions. So before making it live, your app gets ready to rock the word without having any flaws.

#6 Uploading of the app:

So once the app is tested rigorously for all the features, it’s time to upload it on the Play store. To start with,

  • Click on “Add New Application” in the “All Applications” tab
  • Select the correct “Default Language” from the drop-down menu
  • Write the “Title of the app” which is app’s name displayed on the Play store
  • After this, the final step is to upload the “.apk” file of your app by clicking on the “Upload APK” button which will then redirect you to the app’s homepage

#7 Store listing details & information:

After uploading the “.apk” file of your app, it’s time to add the most important part of publishing app which is adding the app details like short description, full app description, app screenshots, app promo videos, contact details, app type, app category, content rating & other such important information. To add this information, click on the “Store Listing” tab, add the above information and proceed ahead with the high-resolution app icon, a feature graphic and a promo picture which will further enhance your app’s page. Once you’ve updated all the information, click on the “Save” button and you are done.

Please note that this store listing information can be updated anytime so even if you’ve added some wrong information by mistake or missed any field, do not panic and just relax.

#8 App Pricing & Distribution information:

This is the step where you need to register your app pricing and distribution. So you need to select whether your app is “Free” or a “Paid” app. Along with this, you also need to select the distribution countries wherein you want your app will be distributed. After this, select the check mark stating that your app complies with the content guidelines. Please note that these settings cannot be changed later so choose them appropriately as per your target audience requirements.

#9 Publish the app:

After filling all the required information in all 3 tabs – “APK”, “Store Listing” & “Pricing & Distribution”, a green checkmark will appear beside them which is an indication that your app is ready for publishing. The next step is to click on “Publish this app” button under the “Ready to Publish” drop-down menu. After hitting the Publish button, you will be getting a confirmation message saying that your app will be available shortly on the Google Play store.

So publishing an Android app on Google play store is quite easy and simple but make sure that you’ve offered something unique and out-of-the-box app experience to the users which will take your app to the next level. For development or publishing app, you can also hire android app developers/freelancers or Android app development company, who with their years of expertise can turn your ideas into a reality.
