Michigan Thursday: New Michigan Basketball Assistant and Hello to Luke

Breaking news is that Coach B has filled one of his two assistant coaches openings on his bench.   Reports are that Illinois State assistant DeAndre Haynes who played his high school ball at Detroit Southwestern and was a point guard at Kent State has taken the job.   In 2006, DeAndre was named the MAC player of the year and played professionally in Belgium, Hungary, Germany and Finland.

This sounds like a good hire, for a young man with a lot of knowledge of the game, coaching guards, and recruiting the metro-Detroit area.   Welcome DeAndre!

Welcome Luke Schoonmaker!

In this day and time, its rare we are surprised on the recruiting trail, its even rarer to hear a guy even has a Michigan offer.   That was the case for the 6'6 225 TE Luke Schoonmaker who the recruiting services didn't know even had a Michigan offer.   Rivals and ESPN didn't even have a profile for him.   That kind of status is usually reserved for preferred walk-ons.

It seems Luke got offered at the Sacred Heart satellite camp and keep the news to himself.  He plays in Connecticut and maybe not against the toughest competition in the world.   I of course trust the coaches and they like what they saw in Luke.   He had offers from Indiana, Rutgers, Temple, UConn, UMass and Toledo.

Tight End of course is a position of need in this class and Luke Ford (who just visited) and Mustapha Muhammad who has listed Michigan has his leader are still takes.   Luke Schoonmaker plays mostly QB in high school so he is for sure headed for a red shirt next season.   This looks like a Greg Frey type of TE that he can mold into a strong blocker and pass catcher.

Hopefully, Michigan will get more commitments this weekend for the BBQ at the Big House and the start of practice on Monday.
