It Tasted More Like The Tang Bowl

I'm going to break this post game into two sections.   First, I will deal with the what we saw and bowl games as a whole, second I will give you a trip report from my Orange Bowl experience.

Michigan was in trouble during warm-ups when it was clear Peppers was out for the game.  I don't care how good a team you are, if you remove your best player.   It's going to cost you.   It hurt Michigan dearly in this game.

In the Iowa and OSU losses this year, I questioned if Michigan was the better team and just played poorly.   I can't use that excuse any longer as the Wolverines completely whiffed on the first half of the Orange Bowl.   I wasn't sure what team I was watching, the offense couldn't gain a yard and the defense was giving up big plays left and right.   Dalvin Cook was the best player on the field and he continued to prove it on almost every offensive snap FSU had.

Florida State was the better team and they are not that good.  The Wolverines offense right now are not good enough to win big games.  The offensive line has a number of issues and with each loss this year Wilton's lack of play making cost them 3 wins.   If Michigan could get one TD in the first half this would have been a different game.   The gift on the one yard line, ended up with Michigan going backwards, with Wilton missing a wide open Chesson for an easy TD.    If Wilton threw another 2 yard slant to Darboh on 3rd and 5, I thought I was going to lose my mind.

The play calling seemed more like Iowa and IU then it did against Ohio State.   I think Jimmy is one of the best college football coaches, but I was not impressed how the Wolverines game planned on offense.   The other decision I didn't like was going for 2 on the first TD.   I know the two point conversion would bring FSU's lead to 3, but I thought it was too early in the second half to do that.   That extra point ended up being a big deal in the final score.

My most positive take-away from the game was that Michigan showed heart in the second half and finally started to play some Michigan Football.    My entire experience yesterday, got me thinking more and more about  Bowl Games and the quality of play.     In the first half, Michigan looked like it didn't want to be there, I don't know if it was poor preparation, over preparation, rust,  or a hang over from the loss of Peppers, but the Wolverines were not the same team coming out of the tunnel.

Even if Michigan had completed the comeback, I was going to write what poor football I witnessed from both teams.   That 1st quarter seemed to go on forever.    Michigan gave up a couple of big plays on defense all season and they gave up 5 or 6 last night?   What is that about?  Yes, FSU has talent but those plays were blown coverages, poor tackling or both.   FSU on the other had thought it was their job to keep Michigan in the game.   They fumble on the 1 yard line and Deondre Francois throws a pick 6 on the 5 yard line for Michigan's first TD.

I'm also sick over what happened to Jake Butt.  I hear he has an insurance policy, but this injury if it's serious will cost him spots in the NFL draft.    Watching that first half, with Peppers out and then Jake Butt goes down with a serious knee injury, you start to wonder if playing these games is even worth it.    Both teams were clearly rusty and the level of football was pretty poor.  I'm now firmly in the camp to expand the playoffs and get rid of these games.   I loved Bowl Games growing up, but now they just seem these games are for Alumni or Boosters.   I love having 3 games on TV during the holidays, but the level of football after a month off is just not very good.

Here are my take-a-ways for next year:
  • Michigan needs an open QB competition for the starting role,  Wilton needs to be better in big games.  Even when Wilton had time last night, he was not throwing the ball away or throwing the ball accurately.
  • Michigan needs more talent on the offensive line.   The way they preformed against Iowa, OSU and FSU was not good enough.
  • Michigan needs a dynamic playmaker on offense.  Maybe it is Chris Evans.
  • Jimmy should never schedule night games, I don't know if its the long day before a game, but Michigan rarely plays well in Primetime.
  • I thought #14 Josh Metullus played as best he could replacing Peppers.  (on a side note the stadium announcer continued to say "Drake Harris on the tackle" when mentioning Metullus.  Alex Malzone also made a tackle, which was clearly #10 Devin Bush)
Michigan has plenty to work on before they travel to Dallas to take on the Gators in another non-home game.

Game Day at The Hard Rock Stadium:

I was a bit frustrated at the cost of the tickets for this game.  Being in the lower bowl was going to cost you $250 (even in the end zone).  I think it's crazy to pay $1000 to watch a football game live.   Maybe if its a playoff game or National Championship, but that is crazy for the Orange Bowl.   I saw prices on stubhub and eBay that is was cheaper to attend the playoff games.   I purchased $120 tickets for me and the family and we were in the 3rd deck as high as you can be.

The stadium is fine, its a football stadium and pretty much what you would expect, they have a lot of different food choices.  Capital One did a nice job with their Fan Fest area before the game, lots of games to play, a live band, etc.    Traffic prior to the game and parking was a bit of an issue.   Our hotel was 22 miles away and it took us over an hour to get to the stadium.  We left the hotel 3 hours before kickoff.   Parking was $40.  They did have a free parking area, quite away from the stadium.

The weather was cold.  Yes, I know there is a difference between Michigan cold and Florida cold, but this was very Florida cold.   We were in the third deck and the wind was whipping right through the upper deck.  It felt like it was in the low 40's with the wind.    With the cold temperatures, Michigan playing like it did for 3 quarters, it was hard to stay, but I'm glad we did.   We got back to the hotel about 12:45AM.

I don't know if I would have felt different if Michigan had won, but that day seemed long, cold, frustrating, and expensive to watch that level of football.

Orange Bowl Preview

Image result for Orange Bowl Mascot
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
TV: ESPN
Weather: 65 degrees
Line:  Michigan -7

I think Vegas is un-believably good at setting lines when it comes to pro sports.   Vegas seems to struggle in Bowl Games as some believe they have become a high profile exhibition game.    The underdog has been winning bowl games left and right this bowl season which is killing my Bowl "confidence" pool.

I can tell you one person that doesn't believe Bowl Games are exhibitions and that's Jim Harbaugh.  His team is on a business trip and they have been pretty much practicing full time since they landed in Miami.   It seems the schedule makers love a State of Florida Team vs. Michigan match-up in neutral sites.   Michigan played Florida in the Citrus Bowl last year and now gets FSU in the Orange.   Michigan will kick off next years schedule against Florida in Dallas.

Tale of the Tape

Michigan WR vs. FSU DB's = Michigan
Michigan OLine vs. FSU DLine = FSU
Michigan Dline vs. FSU OLine = Michigan
Coaching = Michigan
Special Teams = Michigan
FSU Running Game vs. Michigan D = Push

Florida State is banged up in the defensive backfield and the offensive line.  Michigan will need to take advantage of these match-ups.   FSU like everyone will load the box and stop Michigan's run with their talented defensive line.   280-pound SDE DeMarcus Walker is a monster and probably a first round talent.  He will force Wilton into quick decisions that make it difficult for the Michigan RB's to find holes.  FSU will put pressure on Wilton all day to try to protect the inexperience in their defensive backfield.

Michigan has had a long time to prepare for FSU's talented defensive line and Michigan Offensive line had their best game of the year in the Citrus last year.  I expect another strong performance from them in the Orange.

Yell, This is the Big House South if....................................
  • Wilton can handle the pressure and plays clean
  • Peppers and crew don't give up any big plays to Devin Cook
  • Michigan has a healthy mix of run and pass
  • The Michigan seniors want to leave with a win
  • Giving Jimmy a month to prepare is trouble for FSU

Say, well this could be high profile exhibition if......
  • Devin Cooks is breaking off long runs
  • FSU's talent trumps their inexperience
  • FSU's pressure gets Wilton happy feet and throwing picks
  • Florida State has a home field advantage playing in Florida

Florida State is like Mike Tyson later in his career.   This year they have beat up a number of less talented teams but lost their big games.   They have a number of weakness that you should be able to exploit to win the game, but you have to be very careful because your still fighting freaking Mike Tyson.

The reason underdogs win Bowl Games is they want to be there vs. their opponents and play to win.  Florida last year laid down because they didn't want to be there and had a number of draft prospects that didn't want to get hurt.   Michigan has a ton of seniors that are draft eligible and a "let down" has to also be protected against if your a Wolverine.   The difference is Michigan's head coach and his mentality that every football game is important opportunity and this isn't an award trip, its a business trip.

I have seen a number of FSU games this season.  They have looked terrible and great during the same game.   Michigan is the better team but Florida State has talent and are very dangerous.    The two guys that could beat the Wolverines are Devin Cook and DeMarcus Walker, both players might be the best (at their position)  the Wolverines have seen this year.   Jimmy doesn't seem to like night games and the Wolverines have usually not played their best football in primetime.

I like the "jimmy advantage" of having a month to prepare for FSU and some will argue if FSU is motivated to play this game.   Most of the talk from the FSU side has been if Devin Cook should even play.   If the Michigan offense line can hold up, I like Michigan big in this game.   If they struggle, Michigan will have trouble moving the ball which will keep FSU in the game.    I'm expecting to see huge games from Darboh, Chesson and Butt.   That is a tough match-up for an injured FSU defensive backfield.   I love the Michigan defensive vs. FSU inexperienced QB and young but talented WR's.   If they can stop Cook (Stribling will need to be able to tackle!) and can protect against the deep ball, the Michigan defense will have another good game.

Wolverine Wednesday: A Couple New Names on the Recruiting Trail

Michigan is preparing to meet FSU in Miami on Friday night.  If you worried about the heat and the Wolverines, the next couple days will be a high of 82 in Miami, on Friday the high will be 74 and probably in the low 60's at game time.    That should help squad from A2!

The other thing that is going on is that the Under Armour All American game practices have begun in Orlando.   Michigan commits Kai-Leon Herbert, Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Luiji Vilain, Cesar Ruiz, Drew Singleton (probably sitting out) and Kwity Paye are all participating in this game.  The UA game is at 1:00 on 1/1.

With the loss of Wilson (who is also in Orlando), Michigan still needs a couple of offensive line recruits.   A new name on the radar is Penn State commit OG CJ Thorpe who could be open to taking an official visit to the Wolverines in January.

Another new name is BC commit CB Brandon Sebastian who is also expected to take an official to Ann Arbor before signing day.

Not a new name but OL Mekhi Becton is now becoming a priority for the Michigan coaches as well.  There is also concern that Kai-Leon Herbert's commitment could be a bit shaky with his visit to Florida and some other closer to home schools.   So getting a few offensive lineman on campus is going to important to a strong finish.

If there is a chance for anything to go wrong with the 2017 class it could be the offensive line recruiting down the stretch.   I was worried with WR recruiting early but that has been replaced with the offensive line.

  • John Calipari has a podcast and his latest interview is with our own Jim Harbaugh.  Coach Cal asked about Jimmy's approach to negative recruiting:  “As far as the negative recruiting, a lot of that comes from people that have been saying that for six months or a year. They’re our enemies, they’re our competition. They try to manipulate a youngster and their family any way they can. My philosophy and thought on it – if you have to talk about somebody else and somebody else’s program and negative recruit them or their situation, then you’re really not concentrating on your own program and the situation you have at your school. That’s what you should be presenting and that’s what you should be encouraging a youngster to look at, not the negative side of recruiting. Definitely people use that against you and they use that against me and I’ve long referred to those type of people as jive turkeys.”

  • Michigan's long snapper Scott Sypniewki won't be back for his 5th year and will look for a school as a graduate transfer.

The Top 5 Time Wasters (And How To Eliminate Them)

“Wow, I can’t believe how much I got done this week — it was phenomenal!”

When is the last time you heard yourself saying words like this?

Based on my informal poll of managers across various organizations, you may never have heard yourself say these words. In a recent national poll, more than 90 percent of managers admitted that they wasted time in carrying out their job responsibilities.

Time is easy to waste, especially if you are not highly-focused on its passage. Benjamin Franklin wrote, “You may delay, but time will not.” The problem with time is that it keeps on ticking away, whether you notice it or not.

That great philosopher, Dr. Seuss, wrote, “How did it get so late, so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. My goodness, how the time has flewn! How did it get so late, so soon?”

What Being Locked In A Room For 48 Hours With High-level Entrepreneurs Taught Me

It was not the answer I expected, but I have no doubt it would have made my parents smile.

I'd just emerged from an incredible 48 hours spent inside a hotel meeting room with some of the most successful entrepreneurs, authors, and creative minds in today's marketplace.

And what emerged was a common thread, a common passion that seemed like a burning fire in the pit of each person's belly.

The big reveal

They talked about it over and over, in various ways and forms, but it was the common thread that made all these people in the room the most successful people in their respective industries.

It was something my parents (both English teachers) had tried to teach me from an early age, as I grew up in a home where the basement was literally lined from floor-to-ceiling with books.

So the big reveal, the common ingredient to the wild success of all the great minds in the room surrounding me, was …

4 New Year’s Resolutions Every Entrepreneur Should Make In 2017

For many, the pending arrival of a new calendar year invokes a desire to start fresh and be the best version of ourselves.

As small-business owners, when a new year rolls around, we often resolve to run our businesses so they are more successful than ever.

By making a few simple commitments on your part, you can really transform the way your business works.

Here are the top resolutions every small business owner should make in 2017.

1. Identify your biggest time-wasters

A lot of small business owners feel as if they need more time in the day. In order to get more valuable time back, start by making a list of the most time-intensive parts of your day. Whether it be reading and responding to emails, scheduling staff, tracking business performance or your accounting, there’s a cloud technology solution for almost all of the inefficiencies that plague small-business owners.

Prioritize these in order of business imperativeness and length of time and start researching cloud tools that will help you automate running that aspect of your business. Look at reviews online and ask your peers what they’re using in order to determine the best technology fit.

For example, Square is credit card processing and point-of-sale (POS) software that also offers real-time business analytics and intelligence — a solution that will make tracking your business’ performance quicker and easier than ever. By identifying the biggest time- wasters in your business and using cloud tools to take care of them, you’ll have access to real-time information and be able to run your business from anywhere at any time.

Michigan Tuesday: Boring Florida Camp Updates

This is a terrible time of the week to get any information on Michigan's Orange Bowl match-up on Friday night against FSU.   All the articles will talk about getting used to practicing in the heat and other boring topics.

It also seems the excitement of Commitmas has come to an end.   We were hoping that maybe Chuck Filiaga or Najee Harris would announce a decision.  For Chuck it seems to be an Oklahoma and Michigan battle and for Najee we know its an Alabama and Michigan battle.   Chuck is a high priority for the Wolverines after losing out on Isaiah Wilson.

  • Jay Tufele one of the top DT's in the nation announced his top 5 yesterday in Michigan, USC, Utah, BYU and OSU.   Jay is taking visits in January so don't expect a quick decision here.

  • Jimmy said a few injured players didn't make the trip, of course he didn't say who.  All the starters seemed to be at practice on Monday.

  • Desmond and his boys attended practice on Monday.

  • Freshman LB Devin Bush Jr. will get to play against the team his father played for on Friday night.  He also grew up just outside of Miami and will have a number of family members at the game.   It's funny to note that Devin Bush Sr. is now on Jimmy's staff and will help the Michigan coaches prepare to beat his former team.

Michigan Monday: Chirstmas Camp is over and Florida Camp Begins!

Jimmy has been calling practice before the Orange Bowl as Christmas Camp.  Well, Christmas Camp is over as the Wolverines traveled to South Florida on Sunday and will start practice in Florida today.   Some of the buzz on the young players include: Ron Johnson Mike Dwumfour, Lawrence Marshall, Long, Hill, and Hudson on defense.  On offense, Onwenu looks like a starter at right guard and Crawford and Nate Johnson are playing well at WR.

I know it's old news and was expected but Drew Singleton committed to Michigan before the holiday.   We covered Drew the day of his announcement but the best story I have read about Drew, is that he tore his ACL in September and was training so hard and healing so fast that he almost played in his State Championship game.    Remember when ACL tears used to keep guys out a full calendar year?  Drew almost came back in the same season.

  • A name from last years class that we were expecting might make it to Ann Arbor in January, is not going to happen.  Michigan Blog Touch the Banner is reporting that Linebacker Dytarious Johnson signed with Eastern Illinois last week.   Hopefully he has the upside Tony Romo did at EIU.  Good luck to Dytarious!

When ordering custom jerseys be careful!

For Motobriiz, the answer was (literally) blowing in the wind

When Motobriiz founder Mike Steele bought his first motorcycle in 2007, he soon discovered something he didn’t like: the bike’s chain needed to be cleaned and oiled every few hundred miles to avoid damage. This meant hoisting the back wheel and breaking out the rags and lubricant spray – no small chore – almost every other time he rode.

So Steele, a La Plata resident who trained as a mechanical engineer, got to thinking.

There were existing products that keep chains oiled using electricity or the power of the engine, but Steele began to wonder if there was a simpler way.

“It just kept eating at me,” Steele said. Eventually, he got an idea: the wind generated by the movement of the bike could be used to push oil onto the chain. That way, the drip of oil would speed up as the motorcycle went faster, and would stop on its own when the motorcycle stopped moving.

So in the summer of 2012, Steele made his first crude prototype out of some tubing and put it on his bike. As he rode, air was pushed into one bit of the tubing, which created pressure in a small chamber filled with water. That pressure pushed the water out through another tube.

motobriizSteele’s finished product works the same way: the air pressure gently pushes oil out of the reservoir and into an applicator, which applies it directly to the chain. More speed means more air pressure and more oil on the chain.

After a little research and number-crunching, Steele was confident he could sell his device for less than the other products on the market and still turn a profit. That December he applied for a United States patent, which was approved in March 2015.

Steele also pitched his idea as part of Startup Maryland’s 2015 “Pitch Across Maryland” bus tour, and won a pitch competition hosted by Southern Maryland Innovation & Technology (SMIT) in May 2016.

As of December, Steele said he’s sold about 600 units in 39 countries on six continents (none, so far, to Antarctica). International sales are crucial because chain-driven motorcycles are more common in other parts of the world than in the U.S., Steele said. His international patent applications are awaiting approval.

A program manager in the defense industry by day, Steele says he’s still assembling each Motobriiz order himself, and has been working to get his product sold in motorcycle dealerships in Maryland. In the future, he’d like to explore partnering with a manufacturer to have the product built-in to new motorcycles.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Steele said. “I haven’t made a lot of money yet, but it’s really satisfying when you get an order from across the world from somebody who thinks your idea is a good idea. It puts a little spring in your step.”

Michigan Friday: Commitmas Continues!

Rivals 5 Star LB Jordan Anthony made it official last night at 7:00 that he would be a Michigan Wolverine next year.   There really wasn't any drama to this announcement as it was rumored that JA was a silent commit for some time.    I won't go too deeply into a write up as, I covered it yesterday in the expectation that he would be Blue.

The newest and next announcement is from Paramus Catholic High School LB Drew Singleton.   Drew is a Under Armour All American and the top ranked LB in NJ.   He tore is ACL in September but is nearly fully healed and will be ready for Spring Practice.  Yes, Drew plays at Peppers HS and has been on campus a number of times.   His team even played in the Big House in September before he got hurt.

Drew's final list includes:  Michigan, MSU, Clemson and Pitt.  Drew is 6'2 and 215 pounds and a 4 star LB to all the services. His full offer list includes the likes of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Miami, ND, Ohio State, Tennessee and many more.   Drew is pretty much considered a top 100 player nationally to all the services.  24/7 composite has him ranked as the #66 player nationally.

Drew announces at 6:00 tonight.  I like the Wolverines chances.

-----

Now to some terrible news, I'm sure you have heard by know that Grant Perry has been suspended and his future as a Wolverine is highly in doubt.   Grant got into trouble in East Lansing during Michigan's bye week and is facing a number of charges including:  assaulting, battering, resisting or obstructing an officer, plus two counts of fourth degree sexual assault and a minor-in-possession charge.   These are all serious charges and Grant is looking at a very long road to get back
on the team.

Grant was clearly being punished during the season and missed a number of games, before he was officially charged.  Now that he has, he has been suspended indefinitely.

-----
  • The Michigan Basketball Team got by Furman last night 68-62.

  • The Basketball Team also got a 2018 commit from instate PG David DeJulius.

  • Michigan is getting their FB/TE back for another year as Khalid Hill will be back for his 5th year.  His nickname is the Hammering Panda.

Michigan Thursday: Some Recruiting Notes

IMG's LB Jordan Anthony will make his final decision known at 7:00 PM tonight.   His top 6 are Michigan, Auburn, Clemson, Oklahoma, Maryland and Penn State.

Jordan is rated as a 4 star LB across the board, minus Rivals which recently bumped him up to a 5 star.   Rivals ranks him as the #1 Inside LB in the country and #26 player in the country.   That is some pretty high praise!

Jordan is 6'1 and 220 pounds and should compete for the two deep if he picks the Wolverines tonight.

Do you want to ask if the IMG Spring Break Trip was worth the costs for the Wolverines last Spring?   The answer would be Cesar Ruiz and Jordan Anthony.

Will Jordan be wearing Jordan's on the field next year?

  • There continues to be positive buzz on Najee Harris.  We could hear soon on his college choice or he could just enroll and show up at Michigan or Alabama.

  • TX OT Chuck Filiaga a very important recruit for the Wolverines has announced his top 3: Michigan, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.   I believe he is planning to announce at the Army All American game.

  • Congratulations to Taylor Lewan who made his first pro bowl.

I have heard a number of times about the number of bowl practices that are allowed.   I believe that information to false.   The 20 hour rule for practices continue even preparing for a bowl game.  So Michigan could have 20 - 1 hour practices if they wanted to during the week.  Jimmy is calling bowl practice - Christmas Camp.   This is a great time for the young players to get plenty of reps, with the goal being the starting lineup in Dallas against Florida to open next season.

Mo Hurst Offically Coming Back

Big Mo Hurst is coming back for his 5th year.   This is great news for the defensive line that is losing Worm, Godin and Taco.

Next years starting defensive line will look like Mo Hurst, Bryan Mone, Rashan Gary, and Chase Winovich.  That is a pretty good line, with hopefully some nice depth from the 2017 class.

It's Time For A New Big Ten Commissioner

Image result for jim delany
chapelboro.com
Jim Delany has been the Big Ten commissioner since 1989.   It's time for a change.   Before we address his recent failures in leadership, lets take a look why he is still in office for 27 years.

Jim's biggest accomplishment while in his current role was the creation of the Big Ten Network.   This cable channel brings hundred of millions of dollars to the Big Ten each year.   I'm guessing each school loves the time of year, when they get that huge BTN check.  Nearly 25% of all US households get the BTN.

He has also negotiated huge deals with ESPN and CBS for college basketball.

He expanded the Big Ten with Penn State and Nebraska.  Both have been a success.   (There are some reports out there that Nebraska might be looking to move back to the Big 12 as they feel their brand has not grown in the crowded Big Ten).

Jim was also instrumental in getting instant replay review for college football.

Those are just a few of Jim's success in his role. Now let's address why he should retire.

First off, the only thing you should do for 27 years is breathe.   I don't know how you can be an effective leader in these times, being in a role for that long.    Sure you can add smart people to your staff, but at this point you have to be just a figure head.    I think we have seen a very public Big Ten failure at a school with a coach leading a football program way too long.

  • I'm not going to go over the officials at the OSU - Michigan game again, but Jim clearly not addressing it in any fashion is a clear lack of leadership and being completely tone deaf.

  • BTN is going to have trouble moving forward.   Cable cord cutting is happening at an incredible rate.  ESPN in October and November lost over 1M subscribers,  Disney is considering selling ESPN as it's losing money on a daily basis.   It's estimated that if that rate continues ESPN will lose 7 Million subscribers next year.  Sports is the most expensive part of cable TV and I expect BTN would be cut as quickly as ESPN.   Get ready for those BTN checks to take a massive hit over the next few years.   (on a side note, there is a ton of talk about Gruden taking over the LA Rams.  Do you think the EPSN/Disney executives would love for him to take that job?  It's reported Gruden is the highest paid employee at ESPN at $7M a year)

  • The addition of Maryland and Rutgers has not had a positive effect on the conference.   Both schools were losing money out of their athletic departments and running way in the red.  When Jim came knocking they both jumped at a chance to get that BTN money.   Why add these programs?  Because it gave the BTN reach in NY/NJ and in the Washington DC markets.   Those are huge TV markets and could increase viewership by millions.   I don't have too many complaints about Maryland but Rutgers has been a complete embarrassment to the league.    Yesterday's NCAA violations notification was the latest example.   There has to be huge buyer remorse here, even though Jim denies it.

  • If cable cord cutting is happening at nearly 20,000 people a day, the addition of the above markets make that decision a poor one in todays marketplace.

Jim "Denies it" Delany has made Millions for each Big Ten school and his idea about the BTN has been copied by every major conference out there.   The issue is, times are a changing and it's time for new leadership in the league office.   As cable companies are quickly moving towards becoming Newspapers, there has to be new ideas on how to sell the Big Ten product.  Give him a gold Rolex, a golf membership and show him to the door.

  • 4 Star DT Jay Tufele is planning to take official visits to Utah and USC in January.  He is looking like a signing day decision.

  • The next commitment announcement on deck is tomorrow with 4/5 star IMG FL LB Jordan Anthony.

  • NJ LB Drew Singleton decision could also drop before Christmas.

InfoZen plans headquarters expansion, 100 new jobs

InfoZen, an advanced IT services and solutions provider for the federal government, is expanding its corporate headquarters in Montgomery County and creating 100 new jobs by the end of next year.

The company is currently renovating its office space on Rockledge Drive and adding an additional 25,000 square feet to accommodate its growing workforce. InfoZen plans to spend at least $2 million on improvements, including furniture, fixtures, and computer equipment.

“After more than 20 years in business, I’m very pleased with the state of Maryland’s efforts to support InfoZen’s continued growth in the region and to make it attractive for our employees to remain in the area while bringing new talent from surrounding areas,” said Raj Ananthanpillai, InfoZen’s chairman, CEO, and president.

In September, the company was awarded a $208 million federal contract from the Department of Homeland Security to help modernize the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) Office of Information Technology (OIT). InfoZen will assist the USCIS Office of Information Technology to provide information technology expertise, strategic vision and tactical implementation to enable USCIS to deliver effective, efficient, and secure immigration services and products.

“Creating jobs and helping businesses grow here in Maryland is a top priority of our administration,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “InfoZen is part of a robust sector of high-tech companies that have chosen to grow and expand in Maryland this year – a testament to our high-quality workforce and increasingly competitive state economy.”

Michigan Tuesday: Two 4 Stars on Monday!

With all these guys committing it makes you forget that Michigan is playing in a football game in less then two weeks.    What a Monday!

It started out at noon when IMG Center Cesar Ruiz picked the Wolverines.  Cesear is widely known as the top center in this class.  Scout actually has him #2, while all the services have him #1.   Center is a bit of a unique position and usually you take a guard prospect and turn him into a center.   CR is true center and I love it.

He is enrolling early and will have a chance to at least compete for the two deep.   This was a very important pick-up for the 2017 class!

Then at 4:00 the commitment of instate 4 star Flint Southwestern DL Deron Irving-Bey dropped.   Deron early in his recruitment was a lock to MSU.   This recruitment didn't work out for the Spartans as he has been a regular visitor in Ann Arbor this summer.   He never took an official to East Lansing.

DIB is a 4 star across all the services and a top 300 player.   His offer list included Tennessee, Maryland, Michigan State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Pitt, Syracuse, and Western Michigan.  That is not exactly a whos who in college football, but it also very Midwest centric for a kid that didn't play on a very good team.

Here is the thing, he is 6'5 and up to 280 pounds.   He is closer to the basement then his ceiling, he will add some weight and technique under the great Greg Mattison.   My hope is he moves to more of a DT then a DE in Ann Arbor.  I would love him to be a Willie Henry or a Mo Hurst.  It's also pretty clear that he is heading to a redshirt unless his quickness gets him on the field next season.

I saw this on the Mgoblog board, but it really is Commitmas!  🎄🎅

Who is left Bob?

- IMG's 4-5 star LB Jordan Anthony announces on Thursday.

- We hope to hear the crown jewel of this class #1 ranked Najee Harris sometime soon.

-5 Star DT Aubrey Solomon

-Top 100 UT DT Jay Tufele

-NJ 4 star LB Drew Singleton

- TX 4 star OT Chuck Filiaga

All these guys could commit at anytime now.   AL WR Nico Collins is planning on announcing on signing day.    The players that need to enroll early can announce this month or at their respective all star games.   MS LB Willie Gay is also on the board, if his qualification issues are cleared up.

Michigan has 24 spot filled now and it looks pretty clear they are heading to a class of 30.   With the biggest need being on the offensive line and probably at the tackle position.   The balance of being able to use a 2016 scholarship vs. 2017 ship (for the early enrollees) will be one reason the Wolverines will be able to load up this class.

Breaking News: All The Top Players In The State Go To Michigan!

Flint's 4 star DE Deron Irving-Bey has committed to Michigan this afternoon.   He is the second 4 star player to commit to the Wolverines this afternoon.   More to come on him on Tuesday.

Michigan now has the top 6 players from the State of Michigan on 24/7 and the top 7 out of 8.

from The BIG HOUSE Blog http://mbighouse.blogspot.com/2016/12/breaking-news-all-top-players-in-state.html

Michigan Monday: Hail Cesear!

I agree with some of the recruiting insiders, that one of the most important recruits in this class is IMG's 6'3 320 pound Center Cesar Ruiz.   He is a 4 star center across the board and is considered one of the best centers in the country.   Michigan needs a center and Cesar with a strong spring and fall camp, could move right into the starting position.  He has been a strong Michigan lean for nearly a year and is expected to pick the Wolverines around 12:00 today.

His offer list includes: Florida, Alabama, Auburn, FSU, Clemson, Miami, Pitt, Oklahoma, Texas AM, Penn State, MSU and plenty of others.   Cesar is also a Under Armour All American.

This could be a great way to start the week!

Cesear's IMG teammate LB Jordan Anthony is also expected to announce this week on Thursday.

  • We all wait to hear what Najee Harris is thinking.   The rumor mill is he has sent in his early enrollment paperwork to both Michigan and Alabama.   Which means he can enroll at either school in January.

  • The offensive line is now a bit of a concern for the Wolverines, the next important commit after Cesar's announcement is Texas OT Chuck Filiaga.  He could announce this month or wait to the Army All American game.

  • Dylan McCaffrey won the Golden Helmet award.  He will also be the next the McCaffrey to play a college football game as his brother Christian is skipping the Sun Bowl.

  • Jimmy's coaching pipeline continues:  Jimmie Dougherty a Michigan analyst on Harbaugh's staff just took the WR coaching position at Oregon.

Passion Meets Purpose at Hagerstown Incubator

Western Maryland’s largest and most comprehensive technology-based business incubator, the Technical Innovation Center (TIC), is buzzing with entrepreneurs ready to make an impact with their ideas and innovations. TIC manager Janice Riley said the entrepreneurial employees of TIC member companies are “out to change the world.”

Jason Dumois, Founder and CEO of eLearning Talent LLC, a TIC member company, shares this trending mindset at TIC—he’s going to make an impact on the world. eLearning Talent supports companies’ learning initiatives, including staffing and content development. While eLearning Talent supports the eLearning needs of companies in a variety of industries, the company is on a mission to use its eLearning expertise to educate and inspire around one cause in particular: diabetes. Dumois’ son, who is living with Type 1 Diabetes, is the inspiration behind this mission.

“I don’t have the power to create a cure, but I have experience in eLearning to make a difference without being in the medical field,” Dumois said.

In an effort to create more engaging training about diabetes, Dumois assembled a team of eLearning professionals and diabetes experts (some who have diabetes themselves) to create videos that educate audiences about the disease. For instance, the video below was created to help educate K-12 school personnel about Type 1 diabetes. The company hopes to develop similar training videos in the future in partnership with the American Diabetes Association or another organization that believes in improving diabetes education.

How TIC Helps Entrepreneurs Pursue Their Passion

TIC helps startups transform their ideas from writing on the back of a napkin, to a sustainable business with jobs, Riley says. TIC support comes in the form of workshops, training, office space, and assistance with business planning essentials, such as go-to-market strategy. TIC offers 30 office suites, 11 wet labs, and 10,000 square-feet of manufacturing space on the Hagerstown Community College campus.
While space is critical to many companies’ operations, collaboration and networking are critical to the TIC entrepreneurs as well.

“Peer-to-peer mentoring just happens in the hallway,” Riley said about the camaraderie and networking between staff at TIC member companies.

Dumois called TIC “a big think tank,” saying that entrepreneurs, regardless of what industry they’re in, put their heads together as entrepreneurs to help each other solve problems. “It’s a huge support center,” Dumois said. When asked about his thoughts on entrepreneurship in Maryland, Dumois said: “I see this area becoming the Silicon Valley of the East Coast.”

TIC’s Growth & Impact

Since 2013, TIC has graduated six companies, which have all went on to operate their businesses locally in Hagerstown. These companies employ 60 people and generate more than $50 million in revenue, Riley said. The TIC has acquired 15 new startups since July 2015 and served 72 companies in fiscal year 2016.

Governor Larry Hogan recently recognized TIC with a Governor’s Citation for its ongoing support of growing tech startups from an innovative idea to a sustainable company. Additionally, on November 30, the Regional Manufacturing Institute (RMI) awarded Riley a Champion in Manufacturing award for increasing growth through her visionary leadership.

Michigan Friday: Gets One 5 Star - Loses One

Last night was a good night for the Wolverines, a future Wolverine on the basketball court was hitting some incredible 3's and even though ESPN said DPJ was announcing at half time, the announcement after the game was worth the wait.

Donovan Peoples - Jones might be the highest rated player to come out of the state since Drew Henson or Wheat Sr.  There weren't many recruiting sites when Drew was a senior but he was considered the #1 player in the nation that year.  DPJ is a 5 star to all services, minus ESPN (who has him the #27 player but a 4 star).  All the services have him in the top 32 and 24/7 has him rated the 8th player in the nation.   This is a smart kid that wants to study Pre-Med had took a quick internship at U of M hospital last summer.  His father is a doctor.

This was a must win for the Wolverines as they couldn't miss out on a position of need and a 5 star in their own backyard.   He is a kid with really no weakness: he is big (6'2 and 200), fast(4.4), smart, and a great athlete.

I won't list all his offers because a player of this quality can go anywhere he wants.  His final schools were FSU, OSU, MSU and the Maize and Blue.  Michigan now has 3 WR's in the fold and will hold out until signing day for Alabama 4 star Nico Collins.

  • Isaiah Wilson picked Georgia this morning.  Shoot.

Business in Maryland: 2016 in Review

This year brought some exciting moments for Maryland. Throughout 2016, the Maryland Department of Commerce continually celebrated companies announcing expansions in Maryland. Commerce also celebrated workforce and job successes, such as statewide growth in manufacturing, and impressive job creation and retention. Day in and day out, Commerce representatives visited businesses of all sizes, helping them solve challenges and celebrate their own successes.

It’s been a busy and productive year for business in Maryland, and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. The video below recounts our favorite moments and highlights of 2016.

Michigan Thursday: Commitment Week Starts Off Right!

The newest Wolverine is WR Tarik Black, who committed to the Wolverines yesterday afternoon.   He is a 4 star Army All American to all the services with Rivals and Scout being the highest on the young man having him in their top 100.

Tarik is 6'4 and 200 pounds and played his high school football in Connecticut.  His offer list was a good one,  Alabama, Auburn, Arizona State, Georgia, Louisville, Miami  Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

The scouting report is he is a large target with great hands.  He does not have blazing speed but isn't slow either.   He should be able to get a chance to play right away and could fit into the slot or outside WR spot.

Tarik is the second WR in this class if you include Brad Hawkins from last years class.   I also expect he might have been one of the "silent" commits we have been hearing about.

  • It's time to start to getting nervous about the DPJ announcement on ESPN tonight. Most say he is heading to Michigan, but the guy really doesn't talk to the services and they might now know where he is really leaning. This is one of the best WR's/athletes coming out of the state in a very long time.

Breaking News: AJ Dillon Peace Out!

Running Back AJ Dillon has de-committed from Michigan and has committed to Boston College.

It seems Michigan was telling AJ he had a better chance of playing LB at Michigan then RB.  Which quickly moved him to BC.

He is a good athlete but the impact to this class is slim to none.   If Michigan is able to land the top player in the nation, this loss was probably expected.

The RB position is stacked at this point and O'Maury Samuels's visit is still expected after his test score comes in.

Wolverine Wednesday: We Ain't No Jive Turkeys

Image result for jive turkey
goofer.com
Jim Harbaugh continues to be something much more then a head football coach.   He of course will be rumored to be a candidate for every NFL head coaching job available.   He is that good at what he does.     He is loving his new run at Michigan and making a ton of money.    Here is what he had to say to the team yesterday about leaving for the Rams.

"I'm not leaving Michigan," Harbaugh said Tuesday while speaking at a Michigan function, via the Detroit Free Press. "Not even considering it. A lot of this talk is coming from our enemies, from coaches, you know the names. You probably know the names of the top three I'm referring to. They like to say that to the media. They like to tell that to the recruits, to their families, try to manipulate them into going to some other school besides Michigan.

"We know them as jive turkeys. Say it like it is. That's the way it is."

  • Today is Tarik Blacks commitment day. (Cheshire Academy in Bowdoin Hall at 1pm)  I like Michigan's chances.

  • Mike McCray says he will be back for his 5th year.

  • Peppers named the team MVP at the Banquet last night.

  • Glenn Robinson is really playing well for the Pacers and has been sneaking into the starting line up lately. Robinson is now averaging 13.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists as a starter and each time the team played well with him as part of the first unit. For that reason, some of the local media are wondering if Ellis should come off the bench when he returns next week.

  • 4 star Cass Tech CB Donovan Johnson picked Penn State.  He didn't have a Michigan or MSU offer, but did have a ton of other offers.  (Nebraska, Wisconsin, Arizona, Oregon, etc.)

Add some Maryland flavor to your holiday meals

Michigan Tuesday: Gears Up For Commitment Week

With kids enrolling early, we pretty much need to know where they are going to school next year.   So a number of announcements are being scheduled.   Look at this string of announcements that effect the Wolverines 2017 class:

4 star Tarik Black: Wednesday
5 star Donovan People-Jones:  Thursday Night
5 star Isaiah Wilson: Friday Afternoon
4 star Cesar Ruiz: Sunday

I guess they wanted to take Saturday off.    This could be a great week for Michigan recruiting!!

  • Get ready for Jim Harbaugh to LA Rams rumors after they fired Jeff Fisher yesterday.   I don't expect coach to go anywhere.

  • Peppers and Lewis made the All American team

  • Michigan visited OL Chuck Filiaga last week before he headed off to Nebraska for an official visit.   He is planning to announce this month as well.
Here are a few guys that are not coming to A2:

  • DT Rutger Reitmaier is sticking with Oregon.  With Jimmy being close friends with Willie Taggart (new head coach), I had a feeling this might happen.

  • OL Alex Leatherwood is sticking with Alabama.  Would have loved to seen him in the maize and blue, but you can't knock a kid for making that decision.

  • TJ Slaton is taking the SAT this month, if he gets a qualifying score he will be able to take official visits in January.  TJ has always like Michigan and I expect he will visit if possible.
Talk about guys with famous Dad's:
  • I didn't know coach Wheat had another son that was playing football.  Terius Wheatley is a 5'11 athlete and played at Pioneer.  He committed to his only Major 5 offer - Virginia Tech.  Talk about a program on the rise!

  • DE Robert Porcher has de-committed from Nebraska.  He did visit A2 but I don't expect Michigan to be in the mix at this point.

  • Lane Kiffin will be the head coach for FAU.  Wow, there are a lot of big name coaches in the State of Florida now.  Butch Jones took a job at one of the Florida schools and Charlie Strong is now at South Florida.    Does Lane leaving effect the recruitment of Najee Harris?

Michigan Monday: A Few Notes From the Weekend

Here is some information from this weekends big visit weekend:

  • Tarik Black - was a surprise visitor.  Looking very good for him to Go Blue.

  • Najee Harris - seemed to love the snow.  The rumor mill is saying that he has confirmed his commitment to Bama.   Per Sam Webb, he hasn't heard that and still believes Michigan continues to have a shot at the nation's #1 player.

  • DPJ - Another negative rumor floating around is that its down to OSU and FSU for DPJ.   Sam is not buying that one either.  OSU might have been trying to get in a late in home with DPJ before the dead period last night.

Today marks the first day of the dead period.  Coaches can communicate with recruits but no in person visits or campus visits until January 12th.

  • Peppers didn't win the Heisman, but he did win the Lott Impact Trophy for the defensive player who combined performance and character.

  • Michigan prospect OL Chuck Filiaga visited Nebraska this weekend.

  • Local Michigan kid who went to IMG and then blew out his knee early in the season, wr KJ Hamler committed to Penn State this weekend.

  • Scout Media filed for Bankruptcy on Friday.  Looks like the recruiting sites will be down to 2 now.

Bambeco to go carbon-neutral

Already an industry leader in sustainable home goods, Baltimore-based Bambeco recently pledged to become the first carbon-neutral Maryland business by 2020. The initiative builds on the core principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship on which the company was founded in 2009.

Susan Aplin Bambeco“Reducing carbon in all business practices has always been a focus for us, and becoming carbon-neutral is the next step down that path,” said Bambeco CEO and Co-Founder Susan Aplin. “We hope to inspire more businesses through our continued success.”

Bambeco, which offers a broad array of home goods such as furniture, dinnerware, linens, and décor, plans to achieve carbon-neutrality in both its direct operations — such as its headquarters and distribution — and indirect operations such as its supply chain. By taking steps to reduce and offset all of its carbon emissions, Bambeco will also be the industry’s first net-neutral home-goods company.

But they won’t be starting from scratch.

The company’s existing efforts to reduce consumption and pollution include a partnership to plant a tree for every Bambeco purchase, and working with suppliers, such as organic cotton farmers and stoneware factories, that conserve water in production and don’t introduce harmful chemicals into water streams.

More than 51 percent of the company’s products are made from raw materials that are diverted from landfills, which reduces the release of methane gas. About 85 percent of unwanted clothing in the United States ends up in landfills, for example, so Bambeco now offers rugs made from recycled cotton T-shirts.

Bambeco has saved about 300 million gallons of water throughout its operations — enough to provide clean water for drinking and sanitation to more than 125,000 people for one year. Switching to carbon-neutral shipping has already allowed the company to keep 246 metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere — as much would be produced by driving a car around the world 82 times.

Bambeco employs 70 people directly and supports 10,000 safe and fair wage jobs around the world.

Aplin says being located in Maryland, a state supportive of businesses and entrepreneurs, has been crucial to Bambeco’s success and its ability to take on the carbon-neutrality challenge. The company looked at six cities in six states before deciding to make Baltimore its home.

“Maryland has a huge population of growing technology, biotech, cybersecurity, and consumer products companies,” Aplin said. “That network of creative talent in the market is a huge asset to our brand and other brands in the region.”

“Bambeco’s growth was spurred by investments from the state-run Maryland Venture Fund which, along with the Port of Baltimore, was one of the resources that drew the company to the state,” Aplin said.

Recently, Bambeco leased 22,000 square feet at the Pier IV building on the Baltimore waterfront for its new headquarters. The company has also opened a store-within-a-store at Total Wine & More in Laurel, selling an assortment of tabletop items, serveware, linens, and furniture including vintage tables and wine racks.

Michigan Friday: A Big Recruiting Weekend

One of the questions in college football recruiting is:  Should we have an early signing period?  I think we should at it should be around 9/1.    With that said, we actually do have an early signing period and it's this month.    Kids that will enroll in January need to have their paperwork signed and ready to go this month.   The issue is kids can do that for a couple of schools they are considering, so it's not a given for recruit to turn in paperwork that they are 100% coming to Ann Arbor.

With the recruiting black out period approaching over the holidays.  This is a huge weekend for the Wolverines and their 2017 class.   Those expected in include:

Najee Harris - Is the #1 player in the nation and a 5 Star RB.   He is committed to Alabama but Michigan seems to be trending.   He will need to make a quick decision as he prefers to enroll early.

Donovan People-Jones - Is the #1 WR in the nation and top player in the state.  He of course is also a 5 Star WR.  He is taking his official visit to Ann Arbor and similar to above will need to make a quick decision.   This would be a huge loss if he goes elsewhere.

LB Drew Singleton - 4 star LB from Peppers HS.  He blew out his ACL this year but it has healed quickly and will be ready to go next year.   I think he is a strong lean to A2.

LB Jordan Anthony - Was just given a 5th star from Rivals to this IMG LB.  Will announce this month and he is a maybe to visit.   Another strong lean to the good guys.

CB Ambry Thomas - Newest Wolverine commit.

DE Deron Irving Bey:  He is planning to announce at an all star game.  This is an MSU and Michigan race.  This is his last official visit.

Paris Ford:  Has a perfect Auto Dealership name and is planning a visit this weekend.   He is a 4 star safety commit to Pitt.

Commits in town for their visit include:  Dylan McCaffrey, AJ Dillon, O'Maury Samuels, James Hudson, J K-P, and JaRaymond Hall.

  • 4 Star OL Aaron Banks announces today.  He doesn't really talk to the services and it seems to be a complete roll of the dice on where he goes.  Best guess is between Michigan, ND and UCLA.

  • Peppers of course will be in NYC this weekend.  There is a very small chance he wins, but congratulations on being a finalist and enjoy the weekend!

  • Surprise!  Major Applewhite gets the Houston job.   He was the OC and now will be the new head coach.   I guess they just couldn't get bye Lane Kiffin's baggage.

MGM National Harbor Opens in Prince George’s County

MGM National Harbor opens its doors today in the National Harbor waterfront development in Prince George’s County. The project is expected to have a significant lasting economic impact on Maryland, Prince George’s County, and the Capital Region, attracting visitors from Washington, D.C., neighboring states, across the country, and around the world. In addition to boosting tourism in Maryland, the MGM National Harbor is creating 4,000 new permanent jobs to operate the resort, according to a press release from Governor Larry Hogan.

“It is exciting to see a respected, world-renowned brand like MGM make such a significant investment in the future of Prince George’s County and the state of Maryland,” said Governor Hogan. “MGM National Harbor will have a tremendous economic impact on this region, and our administration has been proud to fully support this important project.”

Michigan Thursday: Lands One of The Top Corners In The Nation

I love it when a plan comes together!

Michigan landed a very important recruit on Wednesday night, when 4 star Instate CB Ambry Thomas choose the Wolverines.   Many see Ambry as a bigger, faster more physical Jourdan Lewis, which is about the best comparison you can make.

During Nike's Opening 7 on 7 games, many of the WR's were hurt and Ambry played WR and was making great catches.   Thomas might play both ways and could make a difference on next years team.

Thomas is 5'11 and 170 pounds and played his high school football at MLK  in Detroit.  He is rated a 4 star recruit across the board.    24/7 loves Thomas and ranks him as the #3 CB in the country and #31 player in the nation.  His offer list is really long and I will include some of the top schools here:  Both AZ schools, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, MSU, Nebraska, ND, OSU, Oklahoma, Penn State, USC, UCLA, and Wisconsin.   Michigan State told Ambry that he was their #1 target on the Spartans recruiting board.

Again this is a great pick up right before a huge recruiting weekend.  There might be room for one more elite corner but with the numbers starting to get tight, this could also could be it.  I hope DP-J is next to drop!

As an FYI Thomas is cousins with instate safety commit JK-P.  Michigan now has 6 instate commitments to the 2017 class.

  • Coach Harbaugh and Fisch were in home with WR Tarik Black last night.

  • Caris LeVert played in his first NBA game last night and recorded 3 steals.

  • DP-J will take his official visit to A2 this weekend.  He will be an early commit, so he is on the clock for a decision.

  • Rumor Mill:  Lane Kiffin to Houston and Shane Morris to CMU?

Wolverine Wednesday: Starts to Stack Awards

Jabrill Peppers was named the 2016 Paul Hornung Award today as the most versatile player in college football.

Jake Butt wins the Mackey Award for the Top Tight End in College Football.

Its great to see these two Michigan Men and great football players win these awards.   Both are very deserving!

  • The Jim Harbaugh's Coaching Tree got another win this morning as South Florida's Willie Taggart took the Oregon Job.  What a great hire!  I wonder if there are any jobs left for PJ Fleck?

  • This was expected:  Per TomVH from ESPN: Shane Morris is going to do the graduate transfer thing.   What could have been with this former 5 star QB?  I think the best way to evaluate Shane is by saying, he could throw the ball through a brick wall, he just might over throw it.

  •  Brian Griese & Steve Levy will call the Orange Bowl.

  • The Michigan Basketball team snuck by Texas last night by 3 points at Crisler.

  • CA DB Darnay Holmes will not visit A2 this weekend.

  • Isaiah Wilson will announce on Christmas.

  • IMG FL LB Jordan Anthony and heavy Michigan lean, just got awarded a 5th star from Rivals.  Yes, please.

Maryland’s nonprofit arts generate $1.1 billion

Maryland’s nonprofit arts sector had a $1.16 billion total impact on the state’s economy and supported 14,564 full-time jobs in Fiscal Year 2015 – up from $1.05 billion and 12,155 jobs in the previous year.

The news comes from a new economic impact report from the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency within the Maryland Department of Commerce that works to encourage and invest in the arts for all Marylanders. Spending by the MSAC’s 299 grantee arts organizations and their audiences support the Maryland economy by creating and retaining jobs and generating revenue for businesses and state and local governments.

“The arts are continuing to thrive in Maryland, generating more job opportunities and a better quality of life for all Marylanders,” said Governor Larry Hogan, who proposed a record-setting $20.3 million for MSAC in the FY 2017 state budget. “Our dedicated nonprofit arts organizations not only boost our economy, employ thousands of Marylanders, and attract visitors to our state – they also help spur creativity, inspire our children, and contribute to the vibrancy of our communities.”

Maryland’s nonprofit arts sector offers a variety of benefits to the state and its residents. The 14,564 full-time jobs at arts organizations paid $422 million in salaries to local residents, up from $383 million in fiscal 2014. Nonprofit arts generated $54 million in state and local tax revenue, an increase from the previous year, when the arts brought in $49 million in state and local taxes. Every dollar of the operating budgets of arts organizations in the state generated $3.37 in total economic activity.

“With our arts infrastructure continuing to expand, Maryland has become a model for other states looking to use the arts as tool for economic development,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “From our Maryland arts programs in schools, to our support of individual artists, to our thriving 24 arts and entertainment districts across the state, we know that investing in the arts is investing in Maryland’s future.”

Revenues from the nonprofit arts each grew by 10 percent from FY 2014 to FY 2015, while the number of full-time jobs increased by 20 percent. Salaries were also up by 10 percent and state and local tax revenues climbed 11 percent.

The report also explored the regional economic impact of the arts by dividing the state into six regions.
