Port of Baltimore expands, plans for bigger ships

Guest feature: Richard Scher is the director of communications for the Maryland Port Administration. Follow the Port on Facebook and Twitter.

Since last year, supersized container ships have been traveling through the newly enhanced Panama Canal and arriving at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. In order to handle the increased amounts of containerized cargo, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) continues to expand.

The MDOT MPA recently purchased property at the Point Breeze Business Center, located right behind the Seagirt Marine Terminal on Broening Highway in Baltimore. The newly purchased 70 acres of land will be used for additional cargo opportunities. This is the first new land purchase for cargo opportunities since 1987, when land was purchased at the Fairfield Marine Terminal for automobiles.

“Since welcoming our first big container ship through the newly expanded Panama Canal last year, the Port of Baltimore has seen a significant jump in its container business,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “With the purchase of additional land, the Port will have more ability to handle the increased economic activity while generating new job opportunities for Maryland citizens.”

The MDOT MPA plans to utilize the additional land as a container storage location, but can also use it for autos and roll on/roll off storage. About 1,650 direct jobs are expected to be generated due to this purchase.

In 2016, the Port handled a record 538,567 containers. Since July, the Port has increased its productivity by seven percent, when the first large container shipped through the Panama Canal to Baltimore.

Michigan Memorial Day Monday: Ryan Hayes Is Blue!

This holiday weekend, Jimmy and staff got a very big gift when 6'7 255 pound OT Ryan Hayes committed to the Wolverines.   That's right Bighouse Inmates!  He is 6'7 and only weighs 255 pounds.   Talk about a frame for Greg Frey and others to work with moving forward.  Ryan could even play a little TE at the next level as well.

This has been a very good instate week for the Wolverines.   On Tuesday they landed Jalen Mayfield from Grand Rapids and this weekend Ryan from Traverse City.  The Wolverines might have also cashed out on instate recruits for the 2018 class as well.  4 star OG McCall who committed to UK a couple weeks ago said, that everyone stopped calling, which mean he has some admission issues and 4 star Cass Tech corner (and former ND commit) Gervin doesn't seem to fit Michigan's system of larger corners.

Ryan loved A2 as soon as he stepped on campus. "It just felt right from my first visit and I just loved everything about it there," Hayes added.   He picked Michigan over ND and MSU.

Ryan is a 4 star to 24/7, Scouts, and ESPN.  Rivals has him as a 3 star.  247Sports ranks Hayes as the nation's No. 10 offensive tackle and No. 102 recruit overall. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite slots him at No. 17 and No. 205 respectively.  He also plans to sign his LOI in December to end his recruiting process officially.

Welcome Ryan and have a great Memorial Day everyone!

Howard County farmers markets return

Guest feature: Brian Sheavly is the marketing director for the Howard County Economic Development Authority. Follow HCEDA on Facebook and Twitter.

Howard County is welcoming summer with the return of its local farmers markets.

This month, the county will be hosting farmers markets at five different locations, four days a week. Residents and outsiders alike can buy delicious produce, meats, baked-goods and cuisine made right here in Howard County.

“One of Howard County’s greatest assets is its agricultural community,” said County Executive Allan H. Kittleman. “Our local farms are an essential part of the county’s character and charm, and farmers markets make it easy for residents to support them.”

The Howard County Library System will host local food producers every Wednesday until November 15, at its Miller Branch in Ellicott City and every Thursday throughout October 26, at its East Columbia Branch in Columbia. The new Clarksville Commons is also hosting markets every Thursday.

The Ellicott City Old Town Market will operate every Saturday until October 28 out of The Wine Bin parking lot off Main Street in Historic Ellicott City.

On Sundays throughout November 19, the Oakland Mills Village Center in Columbia will be hosting a market at 5851 Robert Oliver Place.

“We always want people to support local Howard County businesses, and that extends to farms too,” said Howard County Economic Development Authority CEO Lawrence Twele. “The buy-local movement is exploding right now. These markets are a great way to showcase the talent of our farmers and to build a sense of community among Howard County residents.”

More information can be found about the farmers markets at www.hceda.org/markets.

Michigan Friday: Way Too Happy About Game Time in Dallas

Image result for michigan florida logo
I know I might be the only one that is overly concerned about this but I strongly believe Harbaugh doesn't like playing night games and his team is a reflection of him.   I can think of 3 high profile games that Michigan should have played better which include Utah, Iowa, and The Orange Bowl.

I was very concerned about the Florida game in Dallas and another 8:00 or even 9:00 EST kick off.  ABC/ESPN announced yesterday that the game will be at 3:30 EST which will be 2:30 kick locally in Dallas.   I think that helps Michigan internally and I hope we see a better effort from the Wolverines at that time spot.

  • Nice article about Shane Morris at CMU now.

  • Fall Practice will start July 31st.  Maybe we should call it Summer Camp?

  • Michigan has offered 2019 DE George Karlaftis and WR Jalen Curry this week.

  • Michigan Baseball got eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament yesterday.   Big Ten Baseball is really starting to get pretty good.

Knorr Brake plans expansion in Westminster

Knorr Brake Company, a manufacturer of braking, door, and HVAC systems for the mass transit rail industry, is expanding its corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations in Carroll County and adding 200 new jobs over the next six years.

The company will invest $2.2 million and add approximately 30,000 square-feet of space to its existing facility, located at 1 Arthur Peck Drive in the Westminster Technology Park. Knorr Brake currently has 280 full-time employees.

“We are a growth company with a long history in Carroll County and we look forward to our continued development here,” said Rich Bowie, KBC president. “Knorr Brake technologies help ensure safer braking for the rail services that transport people within the region and across North America. The additional space and new jobs will enable us to further grow our presence and our market share with additional products and services.” Bowie noted that the expansion will incorporate environmentally-responsible building practices already in place in the LEED-certified facility.

“The continued growth of Knorr Brake is a win for the citizens of Carroll County and for Maryland,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Thriving businesses like Knorr Break that are adding jobs in our state provide proof that our administration’s work to strengthen the economy and change Maryland for the better is delivering real results.”

“Carroll County has the geographic location, skilled workforce, and business-friendly policies that companies trust will allow them to grow to their fullest potential. I want to thank the corporate leaders of Knorr for their confidence in Carroll County,” said Jack Lyburn, director of Carroll County Economic Development.

Michigan Thursday: Wagner Stays - Wilson Goes

Michigan's big men Moe Wagner and DJ Wilson made opposite decisions yesterday.   Moe decided he wanted another year of college basketball and returned to John Beilein's squad.   DJ decided after not participating in the NBA Combine that he is going to stay in the NBA Draft and is looking to get picked late in the first round.

It's easy to say that Moe made the right decision and DJ's is much more risky.    Which I'm sure he understands, we don't know if DJ's family needs the money or what the NBA scouts are saying to him.    Either way, a late first rounder is pretty much guaranteed a Summer League spot and few million dollars.   Does he end up at the end of a roster or in the D-League?  Either way he will have to work on his game as a professional from here on out.   How many of us felt this was a possibility a year ago?  I assume not many.

Mgoblog says that Illinois State grad transfer Mikyle MacIntosh might be an option to fill the open spot or  2017/18 recruit Canadian SF/PF Ignas Brazdeikis.   Sam Webb thinks Pitt transfer Cam Johnson will get a look as well.   Transfers have really become a huge part of college basketball these days.

  • Jimmy said yesterday that true freshman Ben Mason might move to FB after watching him in Spring Ball.

  • Michigan has offered CA 2018 four-star safety Julius Irvin

Baltimore’s Top Businesses Connect Around a Cause

Earlier this month, dozens of Baltimore’s top businesses came together for a friendly competition.

Companies sent teams of six to face off in Civic Works’ First Annual Amazing Race. The race saw teams competing in a variety of challenges, all based around the themes of sustainability and urban agriculture.

They fought to make the most creative and delicious fruit pizzas, raced each other in a relay while wearing vision impairing masks to imitate the deteriorated sight of the elderly, and completed tasks of dexterity wearing a hazmat suit. Participating organizations include BGE, Wells Fargo, Johns Hopkins University, T. Rowe Price and more.

The event illustrated how seriously these companies, and Baltimore businesses in general, take corporate responsibility. Attendees remarked on how much fun they had all while learning more about sustainability and Civic Works’ core programs.

The day concluded with “Baltimore’s Biggest Outdoor Happy Hour,” where employees networked while eating from food trucks and enjoying spirits from local breweries.

Civic Works, a non-profit working in Baltimore for over 20 years, strengthens local communities through education, skills development, and community service. Get involved by visiting civicworks.com.

Wolverine Wednesday: Mayfield Picks Michigan

It was the worst kept secret in the state that Jalen Mayfied was going to pick Michigan last night.   As soon as Michigan offered, he dumped his commitment to "Rowing the Boat" and took a serious look at the Wolverines.

Jalen has mixed ratings: 24/7 and Scouts have him as a solid 4 star prospect.   ESPN and Rivals haven't really scouted him yet and have Jalen as a non descript 3 star.   With his commitment, I expect both ESPN and Rivals to evaluate the soon to be senior and push his ratings up.

Jalen is 6'5 and 255 which is a little light for a OT in Ann Arbor, which means he is closer to his basement then his ceiling.   Getting him on campus to work with Greg Frey is going to be key for his development.   Greg seems to like these type of players and turning them into NFL prospects.   Jalen also plays basketball which means he is in solid shape and not bulking up.   Jalen is pretty much guaranteed a red shirt during his freshman year.

Jalen's offers were from mostly Midwest schools like MSU, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, the MAC, Syracuse, Pitt and Arizona out West.

Mayfield is the 9th commit to the class.  Traverse City OL Ryan Hayes is expected to commit before the season starts as well.    I'm also holding out hope that IMG "Andre the Giant like" Daniel Faalele who is 6'9 and 400 pounds will consider Michigan.

Michigan Tuesday: May Decision Date for Mayfield

Diehardsport.com
Maybe the top player in the state for this recruiting class, Jalen Mayfield, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle from Grand Rapids Catholic Central will make his announcement tonight at 7:00.

Jalen was committed to Minnesota before Michigan offered and 100% of his Crystal Balls have him heading to Ann Arbor.   His final 5 are Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.

Jalen is 6'5 and 250 pounds and has plenty of room to grow with that frame.   Good luck to him tonight with his decision.

  • Of course Jim Harbaugh delivered a baby calf yesterday, what else would he be doing?

Michigan Monday: Tabs The Right Former AD To Run Ford

It seems once you become the Michigan AD, your next job is being the CEO of a major name brand.   We all know who runs Toys-R-Us and now Ford has fired their CEO and will bring in the captain of turnaround in Jim Hackett to run the company.   Smart choice!

I wonder who the Jim Harbaugh is of the auto industry?   Good Luck Jim H. in one of the highest profile CEO jobs in the country.

  • Michigan's Softball team lost twice to UW this weekend and is now out of the tournament.  Congrats on another strong season.

  • On Saturday, the Alexandria Sportsman's Club, a non-profit organization based in Virginia, named Luiji Vilan, incoming freshman their athlete of the year for football.

  • Wagner and Wilson will have to make a decision on the NBA Draft or coming back to Ann Arbor by Wednesday of this week.

LOCAL BRANDING AGENCY AT MEDIA RELAUNCHES WITH A NEW NAME AND A NON-TRADITIONAL BUSINESS MODEL

May 17, 2017 – Baltimore, MD – Local branding agency At Media has relaunched as Cohere, a creative agency on a mission to revitalize cities through the power of design.

Cohere is shaking up the traditional agency model by breaking the mold and launching a purpose-driven mission. Formerly At Media, their focus on placemaking projects in real estate, hospitality and economic development has shaped them as influencers in the neighborhoods of the cities they work in: Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Denver. Rebranding as Cohere is a way to now claim a further stake in the reurbanization movement. As Cohere, the company plans to have an impact on over 4M square feet of space in 2017 alone, with exciting upcoming including working with Caves Valley Partners to redesign Cross Street Market.

“Cohere means to be united and to form a whole,” said Antoinette Marie Johnson, CEO and founder of Cohere. “For us, this means to connect design efforts to the redevelopment of cities through working on projects where we live, work and play.”

Founded in 2009, At Media has worked with notable clients including Urban Land Institute (ULI), Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, Caves Valley Partners, David S. Brown Enterprises, Wexford Science + Tech, COPT, JLL, University of Pennsylvania, HipCityVeg, and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership. In 2015, the company opened a satellite office in Baltimore, MD, spearheaded by Chris Richards, the director of business development. Now as Cohere, the company will continue working in both Philadelphia and Baltimore with plans to expand their reach into additional cities, which currently include Washington DC; Denver, CO; and more.

As Cohere, we want to create brands that are compelling to the people living in these cities, and help spur more positive change throughout the city through these projects,” said Richards. “We’re working directly with some highly influential people, including real estate developers and city organizations, so I’m excited to see how our cities will look a few years from now.”

Cohere announced their rebranding with the launch of the company’s new website (www.cohere.city), with a personal letter from Johnson on At Media’s original website (atmediadesign.com). In the letter, Johnson writes:

“As Cohere, we are working with the change agents and taste makers that are part of a reurbanization revolution.

We still do everything you know us for – branding, design, web development, and marketing – but we do it with a greater purpose and focus. To choose projects that start with abandoned or underutilized spaces, and create more cohesive experiences where we live, work, and play. All to help ensure the growth of our cities is sustainable and that the changes taking place are for the betterment of all involved.

Some call it placemaking. We call it progress.”

Michigan Friday: Just Some Quick Bullets

  • Michigan Basketball 5 star Center prospect Mo Bama picked Texas yesterday.   It was a long shot for him to come to A2, but he was keeping the Wolverines in the top group.

  • Remember DT Jordan Elliot?  He was a guy that committed to half of the Power 5 schools in the US?  When he committed to Michigan he told everyone he was going to stick with the Wolverines, until he didn't.   He signed with Texas.   Guess what?  He is now transferring.

  • Mo Wager and DJ Wilson have until the 24th of this month to make a decision to come back to Ann Arbor or stay in the NBA Draft.

  • 2018 GA OG James Ohonba has Michigan in his top 5.

  • IMG had their spring game last night, should be some interesting stories coming out of that one!  Michigan has a number of offers for the 2018 and 2019 class.

  • 2019 GA. DL Christopher Hinton is expected to visit A2 at the end of May.

Michigan Thursday: Some Recruiting Tidbits

  • Some have wondered if the Michigan Staff still wants guard Emil Ekiyor in this class.  He has been committed for some time and other big programs like Alabama continue to recruit him pretty hard.   Emil has mentioned a few times that he hears from Michigan but not as often as some other schools.  Sam Webb said that the Michigan coaches still want him in this class and the immediate focus has been on 2019 and the travel has caused a small dip in communication lately.   I believe EE is expected to visit Ann Arbor soon and hopefully will clear everything up.

  • Basketball Update: Ohio grad transfer Jaaron Simmons has decided to remove his name from the NBA Draft and will enroll at Michigan.   Regarding Wagner and Wilson, it seems Mo is a being predicted as a second rounder and DJ is 50/50 on late first round.

  • 2019 GA OL Harry Miller has received offers from Michigan, Oregon, Texas A&M, Florida, & NC State in the last week.

  • Michigan offered 2019 4 Star Safety Jamal Morris yesterday.

  • Michigan Football is doing a Big Man Camp on 6/24.  The camp will be both for offensive and defensive lineman.   This could be a good chance for guys to earn a Michigan scholarship or walk-on offer.

Wolverine Wednesday: Some Odds and Ends

  • Michigan Baseball now has 40 wins this year, the first time since 2008.

  • Toledo LB Dallas Grant committed to OSU yesterday, even though his dad is a Michigan fan, OSU has been recruiting Dallas for a year and Michigan just offered in January.

  • Tone deaf Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany gets a $20M bonus, after being surprised at the negative feedback on Friday night games.   This bonus of course includes a booster payment for the hiring of the referee's for the Michigan - OSU game.

  • ND has finally paid off Charlie Weiss, what a great investment!

  • Quotes about Taco and Cowboys DC relationship with Greg Mattison.
Tremendous person, high character, loves football,” Marinelli said. “That’s all of the things you’re looking for. And he’s got some talent. Now it’s about the grind.

“He’s really a good athlete, very good athlete, and then he’s got length. Really good length. He’s long and lean and he’s just going to get stronger and stronger.”

“I feel like they’ve got very similar coaching styles,” Charlton said. “When Coach Mattison was (coaching) at Florida (2005-07), he would go down and visit Coach Marinelli when he was at Tampa (as the Bucs’ assistant head coach/defensive line coach). So they already had kind of a relationship and he felt like I was in great hands. He’ll push me to that next level and get me where I want to be.”

Shore tech park lots for sale

Guest feature: Susan Banks is the business development manager for the Dorchester County Economic Development Department. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter.

Dorchester County Economic Development announced the completion of a fair market value (FMV) assessment for 12 building lots at the Dorchester Regional Technology Park, a critical milestone allowing the county to sell land to expanding businesses.

The market analysis was completed less than a year after the Eastern Shore Innovation Center (ESIC) opened and in conjunction with the County’s announcement that the 13,250-square-foot incubator is almost 100% leased.

“The County commissioned a market assessment to determine the value and selling price for the Technology Park lots. This was both a condition of the EDA grant and a best practice to ensure we can successfully market the sites,” said Jeremy Goldman, County Manager. “Based on the data- driven analysis conducted by W.R. McCain, we know the FMV is approximately $23,000 an acre and our economic development staff can begin marketing the lots to targeted end-users and developers.

The County retained Salisbury-based W.R. McCain & Associates in November 2016 to conduct a regional market analysis; Lori M. Mrohs, a senior analyst at McCain, executed the report.

“We identified the total market value of the property at $1.28 million based on land plus site improvements including utilities, sidewalks, signage, and high speed broadband fiber,” said Mrohs. “Public utilities enhance the range of uses and drainage easements are already in place.”

The 113-acre Technology Park consists of 56 improved acres and approximately 57 acres for storm water management, forest conservation, and a water tower site. Lots vary from 2.26 to 5.5 acres and average 4.7 acres.

There are a number of features and benefits that make the technology park valuable. All lots are turnkey and connected to public water and sewer. They contain high-speed broadband access. Zoned for light industrial use and two miles off of Route 50, the site is outside of a flood hazard area and contains no environmental issues.

The Park is located in Cambridge, just south of Route 50 – a major thoroughfare between the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Baltimore, and Washington, DC – and across from the Cambridge-Dorchester Regional Airport.

Now that the Council has approved a sale price starting at $23,000 an acre, the county will immediately implement an aggressive marketing plan to identify and reach out to prospective users.

Michigan Tuesday: Drake Moving to CB

There has been concerns about Drake Harris that injuries and depth chart might make Drake look to leave Ann Arbor.  We didn't see much from him this spring and Michigan recruited 100 wide receiver's in the last recruiting class.

He announced on twitter yesterday that he is moving to CB.   Drake is 6'4 and if he can make this work, he will have a huge upside at this position.  I think the main issue is staying healthy and getting a bunch of reps this summer/fall.

I was really excited when Drake announced he was coming to Michigan as I thought he would be a game changer.   Let's hope he still does that but now on the defense.

  • It's looking very likely that Michigan - OSU will be on Fox this year.   Some people are calling for an 8:00 game.   I don't believe that will ever happen and Michigan under Harbaugh has not played well at night.   Losses of the top of my head include: Utah, Iowa, and the Orange Bowl.  Michigan should of won all 3 of those games.   Jimmy seems to like 12:00 kicks.

  • MDen has purchased Moe's and now there will be only one Michigan vendor in A2.  I wonder if the MDen will keep the legendary Moe's name?

  • Grand Rapids 2018 4 star OL Jalen Mayfield is now the #1 player in the state to 24/7.

  • AZ QB Tyler Shough is expected to visit IU this weekend and CAL in a few weeks, then make a decision this summer.  My guess is he would commit sooner rather then later as Michigan has a very small class and already has an athlete committed at the position.

  • The Athletic Department wants to put nearly $15M into Schembechler Hall.

Michigan Monday: Tyler Leaves Without a Commit and NBA Combine Re-cap

Things are pretty quiet these days around Schembechler Hall.   So we will take a look a few story lines:

NBA Combine Re-cap:

Moe Wagner played in two scrimmages and scored 13 and 6 points.   His athleticism didn't blow the scouts away but his quickness was on display and many scouts thought with some development could be a decent NBA player.   It seems many are thinking he is not a first round selection and should head back to school for at least another year.

DJ Wilson didn't participate due to an injury but the NBA Scouts were impressed by his measurements at 6’10.5 with shoes, weighed in at 234 pounds and posted an impressive 7’3 wingspan.   This could help his draft status and make his decision on rather to "stay or go" a difficult one.

Derrick Walton continues to be a long shot to make the NBA.  He scored 9 points with 7 assists and declined to play in the second scrimmage.   Best shot is a Round 2 or maybe a free agent with a Summer League invite.

Moe and DJ have 9 days to decide what they are going to do.   I expect they will speak to a number of teams and get all the information they can before making a decision.  Moe is on record on saying if he is not carrying a first round grade, he will come back to A2.

  • QB Tyler Shough visited this weekend and seemed to have a good time.  He grew up a Michigan fan and has a "good feeling" about his recent visit.  He didn't commit but I think there is a very good chance he winds up in this class in a few weeks.

  • Peppers on Friday denied ever doing any of those drugs that radio host mentioned:  “Absolutely not, never in my life [have I used those substances]. Whatever drugs she says I have done, I have never done in my life," Peppers said Friday.  He is going to receive extra NFL drug tests due to his diluted sample at the combine over the next 60 days.

  • Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei 2019 four-star quarterback JT Daniels will visit A2 and will camp at the A4 Aerial Assault in June.

New Internship Network of Maryland Gears Up

Plans are underway to launch the Internship Network of Maryland (inMD), a collaborative effort by the Maryland Department of Commerce, Maryland Tech Council, Breezio, and Fearless.

inMD will provide an online platform that allows Maryland’s interns to connect with industry professionals. The platform, in its final stages of development, will help students find internships, identify mentors, and collaborate with other interns throughout the state.

The program will bridge the skills gap and help students succeed after graduation, while building a talent pipeline to ultimately keep students in Maryland, says Bret Schreiber, director of education and innovation with the Maryland Department of Commerce.

inMD plans to open for beta testing in June. As early adopters, companies that participate in beta testing will have increased visibility among students and will receive special recognition when it launches this fall. Companies interested in beta testing can fill out a form on the inMD website.

Companies interested in partnering on any aspect of inMD can contact Bret Schreiber (bret.schreiber@maryland.gov) or Tami Howie, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council at (tami.howie@mtc.org)

Learn more about inMD in the video below.

Michigan Friday: DJ Banged Up At NBA Combine

Michigan has 3 guys at the NBA combine in Chicago this weekend: DJ Wilson, Moe Wagner and Derrick Walton.   Derrick was invited after Big Baller Lonzo Ball withdrew.   Michigan fans are hoping that Wilson and Wagner come back to A2 for another year before heading to the NBA.

The news yesterday was that DJ pulled out of the 5x5 and a private workout after injuring his quad.
Does that help or hurt his chances of returning to Ann Arbor? It's hard to say.   Most of the feedback, I have been seeing is that both players should return to school.

Per Brendan Quinn: Wagner has met with Oklahoma City, Orlando, Utah, Detroit, Portland and Minnesota so far.  His 5x5 stats were 13 points, 5-11 FGs, 1-4 3-ptrs, 4 rebounds (2 off), 3 steals, 2 turnovers in 26 minutes.

  • The Michigan Football staff seems to be hitting the 2019 class very hard right now.   Which hopefully gives them a leg up on the competition.

  • Reminder: QB Tyler Shough is visiting this weekend and could be on commit watch.

Strouse Plans Expansion in Westminster

Strouse, a die-cut adhesive manufacturer that serves the military and defense, automotive, appliance, and medical industries, is expanding its presence in Carroll County. The company is relocating and constructing a new headquarters and manufacturing facility in the Westminster Technology Park. Strouse currently employs 65 workers in the county and anticipates adding 25 new jobs over the next four years. The announcement was made at Governor Larry Hogan’s Cabinet meeting today in Carroll County.

“The construction of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is a significant milestone and opportunity for Strouse. Our employees are a talented team of professionals, engineering and manufacturing complex adhesive components for global companies like 3M, Ford, and Medtronics,” said Sue Chambers, president and CEO of Strouse. “Our team’s drive for innovation has propelled our growth, enabling us to hire additional staff, invest in their development, and purchase leading-edge equipment and technology to better serve our customers.”

The new 60,000 square foot facility, which will be expandable to 80,000 square feet, is anticipated to break ground this month and tentatively scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2018.

“Strouse’s decision to open a new headquarters and expand its manufacturing operations demonstrates our administration’s commitment to providing better opportunities for our citizens,” said Governor Hogan. “We are proud that manufacturers like Strouse are continuing to do their important work right here in Maryland.”

Michigan Thursday: Loves Wierd News

Come on Sabrina Parr?  This ESPN Cleveland Radio hosts thinks Peppers does everything except snorting pepper.

"He's on the lean and the molly," Parr said on "The Really Big Show" on ESPN 850. "The guy's not going to make it. He's not going to make it through the season.

"He's another Josh Gordon ... I've seen it first-hand from a different vantage point, and it's the same thing all over again. How are you already high out of your mind, and you've only been here for a week."

Sabrina has been let go and now looking for another position.   On a side note, I hope Peppers is making the right decisions.

Here is another weird one:

Anyone remember Donovan Tate?  He was a QB that RR and Michigan recruited in the 2009 class.   He was a top baseball prospect and decided to enter the draft instead of playing college football and was picked in the third round.    He flamed out in baseball due to alcohol and drugs (and he wasn't able to hit either) and now wants to get back to football.  He is 26 years old.

Guess who has accepted him on the team?   You got it! Rich Rod.   Donovan will be a walk-on as the Padres (who drafted him) have to pay his tuition per his baseball contract.

RR is on the hot seat in Arizona and probably has one more year to get it turned around before they let him go.   So he is willing to take a chance on a 26 year old under center like Chris Weinke.

  • Michigan has offered 2018 four-star defensive tackle Bobby Brown.  Is it his prerogative to take it?

Wolverine Wednesday: Could Michigan Land More Commits In May?

May could be commit month for the Wolverines.   Michigan already landed a QB when Joe Milton committed this past weekend.   Tyler Shough, the QB from Arizona who has been blowing up lately is expected in this weekend.   I continue to be surprised that Michigan will take 2 QB's in this class but it really seems that way.  All of Tyler's crystal balls are Blue. :-)

Four-star Grand Rapids OT Jalen Mayfield has set an announcement date of 5/23 and everyone is also expecting Jalen to be Maize and Blue.   Another guy that could drop this month is Traverse City OT Ryan Hayes.  Ryan has been on commit watch for some time and is likely to commit in May or June.

This could be it for instate prospects as OG Marquan McCall committed to Kentucky and Cass Tech DB Kalon Gervin who just de-committed from ND, hasn't been hearing from the Wolverines.

  • There are some reports that Michigan is interested in Clemson defensive back graduate transfer Korrin Wiggins.  I like the young talent Michigan has in the defensive backfield but having some experience wouldn't hurt either.

  • Michigan offered LSU 3 star LB commit Damone Clark

Made in Maryland Festival celebrates homegrown talent

The unpredictable spring weather couldn’t keep attendees away from the inaugural Made in Maryland Festival, the first event of its kind designed to celebrate local flavor and state spirit.

Held on Sunday, May 7, the festival brought together more than 2,000 guests from across the state to celebrate Maryland’s talent, charisma, and quirks. Hosted by Kurtz’s Beach, in conjunction with Route One Apparel, the festival showcased more than 60 Maryland-based vendors including local food trucks, craft breweries, live entertainment, and dozens of local artisans and crafters.

Made in Maryland FestivalThe five-hour celebration to “all things Maryland” showed our hometown spirit at its finest. The Maryland flag was splattered across every item imaginable – clocks, game boards, umbrellas, clothing, and home décor pieces to name a few. Even the food was Maryland-themed, with crab soup available to warm up chilly guests and wrapped-around lines for crab cakes from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood’s truck. And, of course, it wouldn’t be Preakness month without Black-Eyed Susan cocktails made with Baltimore’s Tart Vodka.

There was also no shortage of family-friendly activities for festival goers—among the favorites were story time with the Chesapeake Mermaid, snapping photos with Mr. Boh, a friendly game of corn hole, and relaxing next to a beautiful view of the Chesapeake Bay.

“The response was overwhelming, to say the least,” said festival organizer Hayley Bowerman. “As soon as we started advertising, we were slammed with applications from vendors, companies and organizations all wanting to be a part of the festival. The neat thing about our vendor lineup was that no two vendors were the same. They each offered something very unique to Maryland.”

Made in Maryland Festival Kurtz's BeachKurtz’s Beach, which calls itself the hidden gem of the Chesapeake region, is no stranger to throwing extraordinary events. The Pasadena venue hosts more than 100 weddings every year and is now in its third year of hosting large-scale festivals.

The venue held its first major event, Wine on the Water, in 2015; after a tremendous turnout, they launched their spring celebration, the Bounty of the Bay Seafood Festival. To keep the crowds wanting more, Kurtz’s decided to offer something special and unique to the region and teamed up with Ali Von Paris, founder and CEO of Route One Apparel, to create the Made in Maryland Festival.

The organizers hope to make the festival an annual tradition, while reminding residents about the hard-working businesses and organizations that surround the Chesapeake region. John Mason, co-owner of Kurtz’s Beach, says that even though the company has changed with the times, they still have pride in what and who they are – and most of all – in Maryland.

Made in Maryland Festival Kurtz's Beach Route One Apparel“For forever and a day, I’ve wanted to do something to celebrate what Maryland is all about here on the Chesapeake Bay,” said Mason. “Festivals have been a great way for us to introduce Kurtz’s Beach to new generations. Seeing folks come in and enjoy the space, and spend a day out on the Bay… that’s what it’s all about.”

The Made in Maryland Festival proudly supported the education and restoration programs of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Kurtz’s next event, Wine on the Water, will be held on October 21-22.

Michigan Tuesday: King Davis Picks Next Stop

Kingston Davis was a 3 star power RB from Alabama that decided he wanted to leave after his first year in Ann Arbor because he didn't want to play FB and saw a long depth chart above him.

Instead of sitting out a year at a major D1 school.   Kingston is going to transfer to Independence Community College in Kansas next year and I'm sure will look for another school is a year or two.

Good Luck to him!

  • 4 star Oak Park offensive guard Marquan McCall committed to Kentucky yesterday.  It seems Michigan has been a bit lukewarm on his recruitment.   If Michigan is to show some love, there is a chance Marquan would listen.  He does have a Michigan and MSU offer.    He also has offers from the like of Penn State, Wisconsin, Maryland and others.

  • The NCAA has finally officially approved the early signing period for football.   It's December 20 and runs through December 22th.  This will go into effect this year for the 2018 class.   The February NSD will still stay intact.   In future years, they are moving up the official visits dates to start in April.

Maryland hosts first Deaf Business Summit in the country

Guest feature: Allysa Dittmar is the communications and policy manager for the Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter.

Last week, the Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing hosted the nation’s first Deaf Business Summit: “Deaf Ecosystem: Maryland’s Open for Business.” It was the first time that a governor has hosted an event exclusively for Deaf and hard of hearing business owners, supporting and encouraging entrepreneurship among the Deaf and hard of hearing business community.

“Today’s Deaf Business Summit is another example of our administration’s commitment to create greater economic opportunity for all Marylanders,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We are excited to partner with companies owned by Deaf and hard of hearing individuals to create jobs in our communities and make meaningful progress in improving our economy.”

Held at the Governor’s Coordinating Offices in Crownsville, the event allowed Deaf and hard of hearing business owners to connect with key state entities, learn about different aspects of business ownership and enterprise available in Maryland, and network with state officials and programs. Public and private experts on small business conducted six workshops throughout the day on various topics including procedures and resources on licensing, leasing, procurement, and financing for small businesses in Maryland.

“Our administration is focused every day on finding ways to improve the quality of life of all our citizens, including the more than 1 million Deaf and hard of hearing Marylanders,” said Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. “Today’s summit—the very first of its kind in the nation—will promote entrepreneurship in our state, and encourage Maryland small business owners to help us continue to empower the deaf community.”

The Deaf Business Summit came just before the first Maryland Governor’s Business Summit, which will take place on May 18 in Baltimore. For more information about the Governor’s Business Summit or to register, please visit marylandbusinesssummit.com.

Michigan Monday: Wolverines Land Thier QB

Michigan yesterday afternoon landed 4 star QB Joe Milton from Florida.   He currently plays for  Olympia HS in Orlando.   Joe is a 4 star to all the services, minus Scout which lists him as a 3.  Rivals and ESPN have Joe as a top 10 QB in the country and 24/7 lists him as the #16 QB.    He is 6'5 and 222 pounds and has a shotgun for an arm!

Joe is a guy that is closer to his basement then his ceiling right now and will do great things under Harbaugh's QB coaching.   He will be a nice next step after Peters and McCaffrey and I can also see Jimmy weaving him in for some special packages after his redshirt year.

Joe picked the Wolverines over offers from Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.   He also held offers from the likes of Louisville, LSU, Miami, Arizona, Indiana, Kansas State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oregon State, Pitt, South Carolina, and Syracuse.

Michigan has told Tyler Shough that they will take two QB's in this class and he is expected to visit this month.   I think Tyler will have a short window to commit and then Michigan will move on to other needs in this recruiting cycle.   Yes, they probably will take Tyler but they also might use that spot for another need.

Joe is the 8th member of this class and the first QB commit.   This class size is expected in the under 20 range.

  • OL Ben Braden didn't get drafted and had a tryout with the Jets and was signed to a contract this weekend.

  • 2019 DE Derick Hunter who just got a Michigan offer said, "(Harbaugh) will get you to the NFL, and that's final."

  • Michigan offered five-star Donte Starks yesterday who is the #1 ILB in the country for the 2019 class.

MIDC celebrates 25 years of promoting partnerships between Maryland and Israel

The Maryland/Israel Development Center (MIDC), a public-private partnership of the Maryland Department of Commerce and Israel’s Ministry of Economy and Trade will celebrate its 25th anniversary on May 7th at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

Founded by Baltimore native Marvin Schapiro, who passed away in 2002, MIDC has utilized a partnership with the Maryland Department of Commerce to effectively connect Maryland and Israeli companies to promote economic prosperity in Israel and in Maryland.

Barry Bogage, Executive Director of MIDC and Pikesville native, says the organization began with the goal to create jobs and has since transformed into an economic matchmaker between the community he calls home and Israeli businesses interested in Maryland.

“For business development, the MIDC takes the lead on promoting Maryland to Israeli companies,” Bogage said. “Then when companies come, we bring in Maryland Commerce to help with their vast array of resources.”

Bogage, who will be honored at the anniversary celebration for his service to the nonprofit since day one, said MIDC’s biggest victory has been during the Hogan administration.

“Bringing the North American headquarters of Elta Systems to Maryland has been one of our biggest successes,” Bogage said. “Elta is one of Israel’s largest defense companies, specializing in developing radar systems. During Governor Hogan’s trade mission to Israel in 2016, he announced Elta would be tripling its size and moving to a larger facility in Annapolis Junction.”

Over the past 25 years, MIDC has helped both Maryland and Israel in establishing themselves as leading global hubs of technology. In the future, they hope to begin a Maryland/Israel Binational Accelerator to bring Israeli entrepreneurs to Maryland each year for development training and entry into the U.S. market. MIDC’s work has been as rewarding for Bogage as it has been for the state.

“My entire career has been in Maryland economic development,” Bogage said. “The MIDC has been a wonderful opportunity to work throughout Maryland and in the international arena.”

Wolverine Wednesday: Will QB Recruiting Be Wrapped Up This Month?

Michigan has two really serious QB offers out and both commitments could come fairly soon.   Florida QB Joe Milton who has a rocket arm visited for the Spring Game and is expected to make a decision anytime.   His crystal balls have all been trending to the Maize and Blue lately.

Next is AZ QB Tyler Shough who has been blowing up since his Michigan offer.  Recently he has received offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, WSU, South Carolina, Oregon State, Mizzu and others.  He is expected to be in Ann Arbor this month and will be on commit watch.

Michigan has told both guys they might take 2 QB's in this class.   Which is a pretty big honor in a small 2018 class.

  • Derrick Walton got an invite to the NBA combine today

  • Nick Saban of course got another raise/contract.  Jimmy with his insurance policy was technically making more.   So I'm sure the Bama Boosters dropped off a Bentley full of money and a new contract.

  • After the Rome trip there is a lot of media discussion that both true freshman Aubrey Solomon and Luiji Vilain will have to play and be on the two deep.   I'm pretty sure you didn't have to travel to Europe to know that!

  • Future Update:  Belleville could have a 5 star recruit in 2019 OT Devontae Hobbs (yes, please).

  3. Listen to higher education leaders dive in on innovation.
Maryland’s higher education institutions provide countless opportunities for partnership and innovation across all industries. This will be the topic of a dynamic panel with: Johns Hopkins University President Ronald Daniels; University of Maryland President Dr. Wallace Loh; Morgan State University President Dr. David Wilson; Loyola University Maryland President Rev. Brian Linnane; and University System of Maryland Chancellor Dr. Robert Caret.

Michigan Tuesday: Reading The Tea Leaves on The Starting QB

Spring Practice is over and we have seen Wilton struggle in the Spring Game and Brandon Peters show some serious QB skills.   John O'Korn is also in the discussion and seems to have been pretty consistent during spring ball.

Here is my take on reading as much as I can on the QB's this spring.   All the QB's have looked good and pretty bad in practices this Spring.   The defense knows the offensive plays pretty well at this point and have been picking off each QB pretty regularly.

If the performance of all 3 guys calls for a Push, then the clear starter is Wilton.   Jimmy won't pull him unless the performance of another guy out weighs his one year of experience.   At this point in the off season we are not there and if the Wolverines had a game this Saturday, Wilton would be the starter.

Can Peters or O'Korn catch him this summer?  Sure, but that seems doubtful at this point and I think we all should be prepared for Wilton year 2 in Dallas against the Gators.   I sure hope his deep ball is better and can help his young WR's with some accurate throws.

  • Michigan TE prospect Jeremy Ruckert who maybe down to a Michigan and OSU decision was invited to Nike's Opening after a great performance last weekend at NJ's Regional Camp.   Many consider Jeremy as the top TE in the country and maybe a reason why the Wolverines slow played Will Mallory.

  • You normally don't see major universities make acquisitions too often or ever.   Purdue is acquiring for profit Kaplan University.   That will increase Purdue's enrollment by 32,000 students and gives them a share of the adult education market.

  • Four-star RB Keaontay Ingram face timed with Jimmy while he was in Rome.

  • 4-Star WR Jahan Dotson who is planning a visit to A2 this month, is down to a final 3 of Michigan, OSU and Penn State.   His is expected to announce a decision after the Michigan visit.

Caroline County Announces New Manufacturing Curriculum

Guest feature: Rachel Barry is the economic development coordinator for Caroline County. Follow along with Caroline County on Facebook and Twitter.

The Caroline County Board of Education and Caroline County Commissioners have announced the launch of a new manufacturing curriculum for high school students.

The Advanced Manufacturing Professionals (AMP) curriculum was developed to prepare Caroline County students for careers with local and regional manufacturers. The Maryland State Department of Education has approved the new curriculum, which will begin enrolling students for the 2017 – 2018 school year.

The AMP curriculum was developed in response to Caroline County Economic Development’s five-year strategic plan, which identified workforce development for the manufacturing sector as a top priority. The Board of Education, economic development, and local manufacturers began working together to develop AMP nearly three years ago.

“We are very excited about the opportunities AMP will provide our students,” said Dr. Patricia Saelens, Interim Superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools. “The new curriculum is very robust. It will prepare students for modern manufacturing, which requires creativity, problem solving, and teamwork.”

The manufacturing sector employs more than 1,200 people in Caroline County, representing 12.2% of all jobs in the County, according to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation. There are more than 6,500 people employed in manufacturing in the broader Mid-Shore region. The Board of Education received fifteen letters of support for the AMP curriculum from manufacturers located in all five Mid-Shore counties. These companies expressed concern that it has become increasingly difficult to find skilled technical workers. They expect this trend to continue as their most experienced workers are aging and retiring out of the workforce.

The local shortage of skilled manufacturing labor reflects broader national trends. According to the National Association of Manufacturers, the industry expects to add a total of 3.5 million manufacturing jobs over the next ten years. In a recent survey, 80% of manufacturers reported that they are already facing a moderate or serious shortage of qualified applicants for skilled or highly-skilled positions. This is despite the fact that the average manufacturing worker’s wages are $26.00 per hour, excluding benefits. This is higher than the average wages for workers in other sectors.

Michigan Monday: Wolverine Draft Re-Cap

Jimmy and Staff did two great things for recruiting this weekend.

#1 Rome Trip
#2 Getting 11 Players Drafted in the NFL Draft

This is just getting started folks.  Jimmy is going to turn our professionals every year and young players are going to be very attracted to that fact.    Lets take a quick look at where each Wolverine ended up.

Round 1:

Taco to Dallas:  A great fit for a position of need.  I expect to see Taco early and often as a rookie.

Pep to Cleveland:  Normally getting drafted by the Browns is not a good thing.   I think Peppers will fit in this defense and has a DC that will find multiple roles for him.

Round 3:

Chris Wormley to the Ravens:  Do you think the Ravens had good information on Worm?  His position coach is the former DC for the Ravens and I hear the head coaches are related.  :)

Jordan Lewis to the Cowboys:  Another great fit for Cowboys for a position of need.  Jourdan will get a chance early in Dallas.

Delano Hill to the Seahawks:  This pick surprised me and very happy that Delano got picked this early.   He will have a chance to learn behind some of the best in the business.

Amara Darboh to the Seahawks:  I'm so happy for Darboh, he is a great kid, with a great story and going to a team that needs wide receivers.    I feel like he is going to have a Jason Avant type of career in the NFL.

Round 4:

Ben Gedeon to the Vikings:  This seems like a perfect spot for Ben.  In my mind, I compare it to Jake Ryan in Green Bay.

Ryan Glasgow to the Bengals:  Love that both brothers got drafted after walking-on at Michigan.   I hope Ryan has a long career in Cincinnati which is small town trapped in large city.

Jehu Chesson to the Chiefs:  We all know Jehu had a better 2015 then 2016.   I think Andy Reid will find a way to use Chesson and this seems like another good fit.  He will have to work for playing time, but love his upside with KC.

Round 5:

Jake Butt to the Broncos:  I hated watching Jake go down in the Orange Bowl.   He dropped from a late first rounder/second round guy to a 5th rounder.   He had an insurance policy that will pay him $500,000 but that ACL injury cost him millions.    The good news is he is going to a great NFL program that will give him time to heal.  Jake will be a pro bowl TE in a few years.

Round 6:

Jeremy Clark to the Jets:  I loved that the Jets took a risk on JC.  I hope he is healthy going into camp, so that he has a chance to win a job and maybe even a role in special teams.

Free Agents:

Erik Magnuson to the 49'ers

Matt Godin to the Texans

Dymonte Thomas to the Broncos

Kyle Kalis to the Redskins

Channing Stribling to the Browns

Kenny Allen (as a punter) to the Ravens

DeVeon Smith to the Dolphins

That is 18 players to the NFL if your keeping score at home!

Maryland’s investment in cyber pays off

Maryland’s cybersecurity sector includes some of the most imaginative and innovative entrepreneurs in the field of information security. Surprised? Take a look at these names – Sourcefire, Light Point Security, RedOwl, SecurityDo (now Fluency), and EnVeil. As a start-up or emerging business, each company reached the finals of the RSA Conference’s highly competitive Innovation Sandbox over the 12-year history of the competition. Two companies – Sourcefire in 2005 and RedOwl in 2014 – claimed the Innovation Sandbox’s coveted title of Most Innovative Company.

Each year since its founding in 2005, the Innovation Sandbox has attracted hundreds of submissions from countries across the globe. This year alone, nearly 800 companies applied and just 10 were selected as finalists. EnVeil, located in DataTribe in Columbia, Md., was among the finalists. Ellison Anne Williams, a NSA veteran who founded the company just seven months ago, made her case for EnVeil during the Innovation Sandbox live finals at the RSA Conference in February. EnVeil was named the Innovation Sandbox’s first-ever second-place winner.

Cybersecurity is a focus industry for Maryland and the state’s emphasis on the industry is clearly paying off. Most recently, eleven Maryland cyber companies were named to Cybersecurity Ventures’ first quarter 2017 “Cybersecurity 500” list, recognizing “the hottest and most innovative cybersecurity companies” in the cyber sector:

Anne Arundel County
TrustedKnight

Baltimore City
Protenus
RedOwl
ZeroFOX

Howard County
IronNet Cybersecurity
KeyW
Sonatype
Tenable Network Security

Montgomery County
Arxan
Lockheed Martin
Saint Corporation

Throughout Maryland’s cyber sector, career opportunities abound and schools at all levels have developed curriculum and programs to prepare future generations of cyber warriors. Their efforts are gaining national recognition. Last month alone, students from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and two Maryland high schools competed in the finals of national cyber contests.

UMBC won the 2017 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) in San Antonio, Texas. Presented by Raytheon, the NCCDC engages students in a series of real-life cyber simulations leading up to the national finals. This year’s competition attracted more than 230 colleges and universities, with 10 teams competing for the coveted NCCDC Alamo Cup.

Loyola Blakefield and Poolesville High School vied for top honors in the CyberPatriot National Finals in Baltimore, landing spots among the ten finalists in their division. Created by the Air Force Association, the CyberPatriot competition attracted more than 4,000 teams from high schools around the country.

Stay tuned for more good news coming out of Maryland’s cyber industry!
