Michigan Friday: Basketball Has a Big Win On The Recruiting Trail

Image result for Brandon johns
Scouts.com - Brandon is looking right through you right now!
I don't follow basketball recruiting as closely as football recruiting and this might be an overstatement but I think this is the biggest win for Coach B in recruiting since Mitch McGary announced he was Maize and Blue.  (Kam Chatman might have been a 5 star to some services but he didn't work out in A2 and transferred to Detroit)

Brandon Johns is a 4 star 6'8 205 pound power forward from East Lansing.   That is correct, East Lansing the home of Tom Izzo and MSU.    Brandon is rated in the 40th-50th player range in the country by most services (#43 Rivals, #40 ESPN, #50 24/7), Scouts is an outlier with a ranking of #100.

I'm sure East Lansing and many Sparty fans are in shock how a East Lansing kid could pick Michigan or Michigan State.   ESPN says his game reminds them of Shane Battier from Duke and the NBA.

Michigan has two commits in the 2018 class as Johns joins David DeJulius a PG from Detroit.

  • While Michigan was celebrating the Johns win, they got an unexpected loss when SF Pete Nance committed to Northwestern while on a visit there.   Pete was expected to be a very strong lean towards the Wolverines.   I'm guessing with the Johns news and former Michigan assistant Billy Donlon leaving for NW this week had something to do with Pete's quick change of direction.   Coach B is 0-2 with the Nance family right now.

  • IMG 2019 5 Star RB Noah Cain really enjoyed his trip to A2 last weekend.  He has some solid quotes to Mlive: "They run a pro-style set, they use their running backs a lot - passing game, protection," he said. "The things that they do get you ready for the next level. I'm definitely trying to get to the highest level of football. Coach Harbaugh and his staff definitely prepare you for that."--"They definitely went up on my list," said Cain, who plans on returning to Michigan for the game against Ohio State on Nov. 25. "Everything I expected, they just doubled that."

Technology is steering the fashion e-commerce

Technological development in the field of online business started from the early 1990s. At that point, only structured, less experiential goods could be experienced on online e-commerce.

Digitisation helped fashion retailers strategize newer ways to reach and engage with consumers. As a result, many fashion e-commerce sites developed and encouraged consumers to look for online products, offers and new collections. Digital innovation has made it possible for fashion and lifestyle products to be extensively bought online.

In the last decade, technological innovations enabled fashion consumers to buy online with near-real experience. At the same time, these developments enabled fashion retailers to sell online in a more efficient way.

Technology enhances buying experience

Variety, trends, fitting, colours and brand options are the main factors that impact the consumer's online buying experience. Technologists across the globe are working to enable such near-real experiences of online purchases. Social media enabled fashion e-commerce and has led to take trends, styles and other influential aspects to the next level with sources of feedback and sharing of user experiences.

Mobile Payments – the evolving dynamics of the retail market

With new payment gateways and the steep increase in the number of consumers using mobile phones for shopping and the alternative of mobile shopping is growing to become the latest buzz word in e-commerce and retail. The space for electronic retailing has grown by leaps and bounds and has witnessed dramatic changes in the last decade. The mobile payment being the next big thing and paving way for future retail transactions is going to modify the relationship between customers and retailers.

The concept of mobile wallet is growing and gaining traction in the retail market. The mobile wallet is generally an alternative way of making payments which otherwise is done by giving cash, check, or by debit/credit cards. The smartphone using generation of consumers can make payments either by accessing accounts from which funds can be transferred or by holding payment credentials.

There are many existing models being used in the segment of mobile wallets in the apparel and garment retailing industry. The Short Message Service (SMS) was used to interchange text messages to make payments. However, such a service was more popular than digital goods like ringtones, avatars, and games. There was no security or encryption and no inherent evidence or confirmation of receipt, payment, or delivery.

This was followed by the Unstructured Supplementary Data Services (USSD) technology, an information transmitting mechanism using a GSM network. Since it used real time connections for payment sessions, the service was fast. It was mainly used to carry out bill payment and remittances. But for the apparel retail context the mobile wallet model to be used is the contactless mode of payment. Payment for garments can be made in-store by using a contactless technology by holding the smartphone in near proximity to the retailer's Point of Sale terminal. The credentials of customer accounts or tokens are saved in the smartphone.

European short-haul wi-fi spacecraft launches

A new Europe-wide wi-fi service for aeroplanes came a step closer on Wednesday night with the launch of a key satellite from French Guiana.

Airline passengers will soon be able to connect to the internet either through this spacecraft or a complementary system of cell towers on the ground.

The company behind the so-called European Aviation Network is Inmarsat, the UK's biggest satellite operator.

It is building the system in tandem with Deutsche Telekom of Germany.

The pair hope to start services at the back end of the year, with IAG Group (Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Vueling) being the first to install their planes with the necessary equipment. Lufthansa will be doing some testing also.

Antennas will be fixed on the top of aircraft to connect upwards to space, and other terminals will be put in the belly of planes to link down to what initially will be 300 4G-LTE towers concentrated along Europe's main short-haul routes.

The hybrid system would be a first for the continent.

Passengers in cabins wanting to surf the web or watch a video would simply join a hotspot as they would if they were in a cafe or a hotel.

Cyber-attack

The Petya malware variant that hit businesses around the world may not have been an attempt to make money, suspect security experts.

The malicious program demanded a payment to unlock files it scrambled on infected machines.

However, a growing number of researchers now believe the program was launched just to destroy data.

Experts point to "aggressive" features of the malware that make it impossible to retrieve key files.

Cashing out

Matt Suiche, from security firm Comae, described the variant as a "wiper" rather than straight-forward ransomware.

"The goal of a wiper is to destroy and damage," he wrote, adding that the ransomware aspect of the program was a lure to generate media interest.

  • Tax software blamed for cyber-attack spread
  • 'Vaccine' created for huge cyber-attack
  • Global ransomware attack causes turmoil

Telegram registers with Russian regulator

Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor had warned that Telegram would be blocked if it did not comply with new data laws.

Founder Pavel Durov said the company would be registered on the government's list of information distributors.

However, he insisted Telegram would not share confidential user data.

Telegram lets people send encrypted messages, which cannot be read by criminals or law enforcement if intercepted.

It has about 100 million users, but is also thought to be popular with the so-called Islamic State (IS) group and its supporters.

Russia is introducing new data laws that require "information distribution organisers" to register with the regulator and store users' data for six months.

Companies must also hand over their encryption keys when asked, but critics say the requirements, which come into force in 2018, are unfeasible.

Telegram had previously refused to register, because it did not want to compromise the privacy of its users, six million of whom are in Russia.

However, on Wednesday the company confirmed it had submitted its registration information to the authorities.

"We've no issue with formalities," wrote Mr Durov on Twitter.

"But not a single byte of private data will ever be shared with any government."

Expanding on his comments, Mr Durov told the Financial Times newspaper: "We didn't want to give the authorities a chance to block Telegram under a pretext of not providing nonsense data like the name of our company.

Raspberry Pi scores UK’s top engineering award

The team behind the device was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering's MacRobert Prize at a ceremony in London last night.

The tiny computer launched in 2012. Its designers hoped to introduce children to coding and had modest ambitions.

They beat two other finalists, cyber-security company Darktrace and radiotherapy pioneers Vision RT, to win the prize.

Previous winners of the innovation award, which has been run since 1969, include the creators of the CT (computerised tomography) scanner; the designers of the Severn Bridge; and the team at Microsoft in Cambridge that developed the Kinect motion sensor.

Exceeded expectations

A tiny cheap computer that might encourage youngsters to learn programming was the idea of a small team of scientists and Cambridge University academics.

They hoped to sell a few thousand units, but sales have now passed 14 million, and the Pi is widely used in factories as well as in classrooms and homes.

One of the MacRobert award judges, Dr Frances Saunders, said a small engineering team had redefined home computing.

"The Raspberry Pi team has achieved something that mainstream multinational computer companies and leading processing chip designers not only failed to do, but failed even to spot a need for," she said.

Michigan Thursday: Has News Worthy Bullets

  • Grant Perry has pleaded guilty for assault and resisting arrest. The sexual assault and alcohol charges were dropped.  Most likely Grant will be put in the youth diversion program and his record would be wiped clean if he does his community service and stays out of trouble for a number of years.   I expect he might miss a few more games before he is fully re-instated.

  • 2018 East Lansing Power Forward Brandon Johns in announcing his commitment at 1:00 Today.  I like Michigan's chances!

  • Drake Johnson got a 6th year from the NCAA yesterday.  It's still up in the air if that year will be spent in Ann Arbor or at another school.

  • Michigan has offered 2019 QB Michael Johnson Jr.

  • Nike's Opening is this weekend.   24/7 has a slide show of the Michigan prospects attending.

Wolverine Wednesday: East Lansing to Ann Arbor?

Recruits from East Lansing historically don't come to Ann Arbor to play football or basketball.  They stay home and play for MSU as they probably grew up a Spartan fan.   There is a ton of buzz that might change with a basketball recruit named Brandon Johns, who is a 2018 4 star Power Forward.

John's is 6'8 and 206 pounds and of course from East Lansing.   He has offers from Michigan, MSU, Iowa, Alabama, Cal, Pitt, Texas, Missouri, Xavier and others.   The buzz is that his commitment to Michigan and Coach B could be coming very soon.  Hopefully, the buzz is accurate!  If your wondering, the 24/7 Crystal Balls has Michigan at 71% .

  • Reports are that Freshman RB Kurt Taylor could wear the #5 next season.   That is quite the honor.

  • Jourdan Lewis signed his contract with Dallas.

  • Taco Charlton already has a promotional deal with a Taco restaurant.  Its a Dallas based restaurant named Taco Bueno.

Volo City embraces sports and community

Whether you are bonding with co-workers over a game of dodgeball, reliving your intramural sport college days, or looking for a program to get your child involved in – chances are you’ve heard of the names Baltimore Social and BMore Kids. The go-to institutions for athletic leagues in Baltimore City are rebranding and putting their national presence under one name.

Now dubbed Volo City, based off the Italian word “volo” meaning “to fly,” this unique sports league combines the adult intramural sports programs of Baltimore Social with the free, non-profit children’s sports leagues that were housed under the BMore Kids brand to create a central hub for those looking for active fun in the city.

The program has been nationwide for some time but under an array of different titles. Giovanni Marcantoni, CEO of Volo City, says the moment is right for the company to create one cohesive brand that everyone will recognize.

“We had too many names scattered all over like ‘Baltimore Social’ and ‘New York Social’. People didn’t realize they were all connected. Now everything is under one umbrella,” Marcantoni said.

The idea is a self-sustaining model where adult participants of Volo City sports can also coach the youth leagues in the organization with the incentive of free sport participation. The Volo City Kids Foundation nonprofit will take over Bmore Kids’ charitable work to ensure all youth in Baltimore City can experience teamwork, healthy competition, and active play at no cost.

“The goal with the charity is to bring awareness for the need for free recreational activities in Baltimore City,” Marcantoni said. “Now all adult participants will bring awareness every time they play in their shirts that say ‘We Play So Kids Can Play For Free.’”

In 2016, Volo City’s work initiated approximately $8.1 million in economic impact in Baltimore City, according to a Sage Policy Group analysis. They predict this could increase to as much as $20 million by the year 2020. Besides being his hometown, Marcantoni says the decision to stay headquartered in Baltimore was determined by the overwhelming support and need in the city.

“We were unsure at first where we would station our headquarters in 2015,” said Marcantoni. “But we were met with such overwhelming support from entities, like Betamore and City Garage, that we felt there was such a passion for what we were trying to do. The sports and community aspect is needed in Baltimore and we want be where the need is greatest.”

Ultimately, the company’s goal is to make Baltimore, and its other United States locations, the most active cities in the world for every demographic.

“When people move to Baltimore they are looking to network socially,” Marcantoni said. “Our programs are for every age and every fitness level. We’re getting people out into the neighborhood to interact with each other, and surrounding businesses, to accelerate their social lives.”

Volo City officially launched its new name at a kick-off ceremony earlier this month in the Port Covington neighborhood. For more information about Volo City and how you can get involved visit volocity.org.

Michigan Tuesday: All Freshman Report To Campus

When you sign players on NSD you hope there isn't anything that happens before they make it to campus.  There could be any type of issue like academics, injuries, etc.   Reports are that all the 19 guys reported last weekend and will participate in freshman orientation this summer as they prepare for Fall Camp in a month.

Donovan Jeter took to Instagram to show off the freshman DL class!

D. Jeter Instagram

Hopefully, we remember this picture as being the very beginning of a dominant defensive line.

  • 2018 Indianapolis Cathedral offensive guard Emil Ekiyor participated in Michigan's Big Man Camp this weekend and is 100% committed to the Wolverines.

  • Michigan commits Jalen Mayfield and Aidan Hutchinson also participated in the Big Man camp.

  • 2019 OT Trevor Keegan participated in the Big Man camp and was quickly offered by the Wolverines this weekend.   Trevor is one of the top players in Illinois in the 2019 class.

  • 2019 Five-star DE Zach Harrison visited ND and Michigan this past weekend.

  • 2019 IMG's RB Noah Cain who is ranked one of the best players in the 2019 class, visited Ann Arbor for 3 days this past weekend with former Wolverine RB David Underwood.

  • 2018 4-star C Tyrone Sampson from Detroit, participated in Michigan's Big Man camp.  Tyrone is committed to Syracuse.  I wonder if the Michigan coaches liked what they saw?

  • Maybe the best player in Michigan in 2019, Belleville 4-star OT Devontae Dobbs visited Ann Arbor and now knows he is a priority for the Wolverines in the 2019 class.

Michigan Monday: Welcomes a New 2019 Commit

NSD 2019 is really a long time away.  With the small 2018 class the Wolverine coaches have been hitting the top 2019 guys really hard and landed one on Saturday.

Charles Thomas is a MLB from Georgia that will play his final two years at IMG.   He is 6'0 and 222 pounds as a high school sophomore in Georgia.   With two years at IMG, I wouldn't be surprised if he grew a couple inches and adds more muscle.    The only service to rate him at this point is 24/7 which has him as early 4 star.

Yes, he is two years away from being on campus, but its always great to get a guy excited about Michigan so early.   Having a Michigan commit this early on IMG shouldn't hurt recruiting at one of the nations top HS programs either!

Two thing about Charles:  1) It sounds like he committed in April and made it public this weekend during his second visit.   2) As soon as he got off the plane to come home, he went straight to the gym and put up 315 pounds on the bench.

  • The bad news this weekend was a report that surfaced that Michigan Basketball assistant Billy Donlon is heading to Northwestern to fill a similar roll.   Billy and NW head coach Chris Collins are boys and have known each other for years.   Billy was basically Michigan's defensive coordinator last year and you saw the improvement he been working on late in the year.   Losing Billy is a big loss and now Michigan has two openings after Jeff Meyer left for Butler earlier in the week.   Coach B is going to have some work to do getting two solid assistants in Ann Arbor.

Vitreon to relocate headquarters to Baltimore City

Vitreon America, Inc. announced plans today to relocate its headquarters from Northern Virginia to Baltimore City in order to better partner with Maryland’s world-class medical and botanical research institutions. The company’s business model is based on a specialized plant database comprised of botanicals and phytochemicals that can be used in the creation of new medicines.

The botanical research company anticipates creating 200 full-time jobs at their new Wicomico Street location over the next five years. In addition to relocating its headquarters, the company also plans to establish its laboratory, research center, and grow zones in Baltimore City in approximately 200,000 square-feet of space.

“Baltimore offers all the business, scientific, and medical attributes that we need in order to capitalize on the vast potential of this industry,” said Dr. J. Randall Hoggle, chairman of the board of Vitreon America, Inc.

“We are very pleased to welcome Vitreon America to Baltimore, with access to our highly-skilled workforce, top-rated universities and research institutions, and unparalleled reputation for innovation,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This relocation, and the 200 new jobs it will create, is a win for Baltimore City and our entire state as we continue to make Maryland a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Founded in 2015, Vitreon has exclusively licensed Dr. James Duke’s plant database, which is believed to be one of the most extensive in the world. With this database, Vitreon has the ability to validate current botanical discovery research projects and assist biopharmaceutical companies with development of new novel plant-based pharmaceuticals utilizing Vitreon’s Botanicopeia™. Vitreon is hoping to capitalize on the tremendous growth in the plant-based pharmaceuticals market, which brought in $290 million in 2016 with projections to grow to $1.2 billion by 2025.

“Potential partnerships with 13 colleges and universities as well as two established bioparks makes Baltimore very attractive to companies in medical, biotechnology, and now botanical research and development,” said William H. Cole, president & CEO of the Baltimore Development Corporation.

June is Great Outdoors Month

Guest feature: Mark Belton is Secretary for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Follow DNR on Facebook and Twitter.

Children are enjoying summer vacation. Fireflies are beginning to light up the backyard. And bikes, kayaks, tents, camp stoves, snorkels and other gear are coming out of storage.

June is Great Outdoors Month, and it’s time to go outside and play!

We are fortunate in Maryland to have plenty of public lands and spaces that make outdoor adventures immediately accessible – from hiking our mountain trails to running on sandy beaches to peaceful days fishing in our lakes and rivers.

I encourage everyone to celebrate and experience Maryland’s natural beauty.

Our system of 72 state parks offer tremendous day trips with exciting outdoor activities. We recently reached capacity for our 10th annual Park Quest, an adventure program designed for families to engage in outdoor activities throughout the summer. But even if you missed registering, you can still participate in the fun by purchasing a 2017 Maryland State Park and Trail Passport, which provides unlimited day-use access to all state parks through the year.

I also encourage parents to take part in the national “Every Kid in a Park” program, which provides free access to all fourth-grade students to national parks across the country and all state parks in Maryland.

Michigan Friday: Is Happy For DJ

It is amazing what a year makes.  Two seasons ago, there were questions if DJ was even going to be an effective college basketball player.   After this season, he is the 17th pick in the NBA draft and going to a young NBA up and coming team in Milwaukee.  Another 1st round draft pick developed by Coach B and staff!   Talk about a "long team" DJ will get to play with the Greek Freak and be coached by Jason Kidd.   Congrats DJ and Good Luck!

  • Derick Walton signed as a free agent with Orlando and will play in the summer league right there in Orlando.   Hopefully, he will play well and get a shot at a roster spot.

  • Zack Irvin signed with Miami and will also get a chance to play in the summer league.   It will be harder for Zach to make the Heat but if he shows well in the Summer League maybe he could get an invite to camp with another team.

  • 2018 4-star LB Cameron McGrone from Indy, just got offered by Michigan.

  • Maybe the best instate player in 2019:  Belleville offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs will visit this weekend.

  • Chuck Filiaga is expected to report to campus today.  Drew Singleton is also in Ann Arbor now.

  • Mo Hurst was ranked by SI as the 71st best college football player this year.

Michigan Thursday: Jimmy Adds To His Staff

One of the question marks going into the season from a coaching standpoint is Jimmy's son Jay coaching the Running Backs.   Jay is a good football coach but doesn't really have any experience coaching RB's.

Jimmy sort of fixed that yesterday, when he hired a former player (49'ers) Alfonso Smith to his staff.   Alfonso won't be able to coach on the field but will be able to prep the RB's in the film room, etc.   On January 1st, Michigan will be able to add another on field coach and the thought is Alfonso will get that role when it becomes available.  Michigan currently has a staff opening after Biff Poggi left to become the head coach of Baltimore Prep.

Alfonso played 4 seasons in the NFL with the Cardinals and 49'ers.  He went to Kentucky for college and played his HS ball in Louisville.   Welcome!

  • Good Luck to DJ tonight.  I hope he is taken in the first round.

  • David Harris signed a 2 year deal with the Patriots, reports were he was considering retirement after the Jets released him.

  • BC and MSU have signed a home and home contract for 2024 and 2025.

  • 2019 GA Offensive Line prospect Harry Miller will visit both OSU and Michigan in July.  Harry is 6'4 310 pounds and just finished his junior year of high school.

  • North Carolina 4-star DT Rick Sandidge had “a great time” in Ann Arbor last weekend.

  • Ohio 2019 four-star OL Nolan Rumler is expected on campus for a visit this weekend.

  • 2018 4-star LB Cameron McGrone will visit tomorrow.

  • Long time Michigan Basketball assistant Jeff Meyer is changing jobs and going to Butler to coach with another ex-Michigan assistant LaVall Jordan.

Michigan Tuesday: Michigan Looking Good For NBA Legacy in 2018 Class

Gd2utnkap4oxy66ddiml
Rivals.com
The son of Larry Nance and brother of Larry Nance Jr. is a top 100 2018 forward Pete Nance.    Coach B was recruiting Larry Nance Jr. to Michigan but that didn't work out and Jr. turned out to be an NBA prospect.  He won't make that mistake twice.

Pete seems to like Michigan and is down to the Wolverines, Northwestern and now maybe Ohio State who is coming in late after the coaching change.  Pete is expected to visit Ann Arbor a week from Saturday on July 1st and could be on commit watch.

“Michigan is an established place, there’s nothing bad about it. It really seems like a great place. I’m going there officially the 1st of July so I’m really excited about it.”
  • WR Zavier Scott from Germany was a standout in Michigan's camp last weekend and earned a offer from Central.

  • 2019 TX DT Lloyd Murray Jr. will visit Ann Arbor this weekend.

  • 2018 Safety Jamien Sherwood from Florida will also visit this weekend.

  • Top 100 2018 FL OT Nicholas Petit-Frere visited last weekend and doesn't really talk to the media.   He is going to be a top prospect that many of the top programs are going to want.   Hopefully, Michigan put a great foot forward last weekend.   I'm told his last name in French translates to Little Brother.    He could be Mike Hart's favorite Michigan player if he comes to Ann Arbor.

Celebrating Maryland Makers

This week is National Week of Making, a celebration of the innovation and creativity of makers across the nation. Held from June 16-22, the week-long event encourages makers – including maker spaces, hacker spaces, community centers, non-profits, universities, and more – to host events and invite others in the community to come learn about their initiatives and participate in making with hands-on experiences.

Over the weekend, the Catylator Makerspace in Silver Spring hosted a free activity, Take Apart Day, for children and adults who were interested in learning the ins and outs of electronics. By disassembling desktop computers, laptops, and printers, attendees learned first-hand what goes into building and fixing electronics while recognizing the importance of saving the environment.

This week, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) is hosting an open house with its new Innovation Hub and portable Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB). The Innovation Hub features a collaborative workspace to boost creativity and innovative solutions among NAWCAD employees. The FABLAB is the division’s mobile makerspace that allows makers to test their prototype designs in real-time. Located at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County, NAWCAD contributes to the military installation’s economic impact of nearly 37,000 jobs in the state.

There are a number of makerspaces available for residents throughout Maryland. Learn more about makers in your area, including M4 Reactor (Salisbury); PaxSpace, Inc. (Hollywood); The Foundery (Baltimore); OpenWorks (Baltimore); Industrial Commons (Hagerstown); and Greenbelt Makerspace (Greenbelt).

Michigan Monday: Taking The Team Back To Europe

Jimmy is already planning their next trip to Europe for the team.   Next Spring Jimmy will take the team to London, Paris, and Normandy.  This private donor must have very deep pockets!

  • Nico Collins is on campus but isn't participating in summer workouts yet.   He hasn't been cleared yet.  Which means he is still waiting on the Clearinghouse or has a minor injury and isn't medically cleared.   Hopefully, either situation won't be an issue and cleared up right away.

  • Michigan commitment twins Gemon Green and German Green will be at the BBQ at the Big House.

  • Jimmy at the Arial Assault camp on Saturday said that Grant Perry won't represent Michigan on the field until there is closure in his case.   He also confirmed Grant Newsome will redshirt this year as he rehabs his knee.

  • Sounds like Jimmy lost two members off his staff.  Reports are that Biff Poggi will head back to coaching HS football and one of his first hires Jim Minick is leaving his role.

  • 2019 four-star TE Grayson Boomer visited on Friday.

  • Don Brown says that Gary could be the best DE he has ever seen.  Yes, Please!

FDI in the USA: 5 Reasons Maryland Should be On the Short List

This week, Maryland’s international team is heading to Washington D.C. for the Select USA Summit, the top Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) event in the country. The event provides an opportunity for Maryland to showcase its assets in front of an audience of international investors and businesses. We know U.S. expansion is on the mind of many attendees, so to help make the case for Maryland, we’ve compiled a list of five reasons Maryland should be on the shortlist.

  1. A Connected Location

Neighboring Washington D.C. has its advantages, including proximity and access to key U.S. and international decision makers, partners, and agencies. Maryland’s central location on the East Coast—halfway between Boston and Atlanta, and only a three-hour drive to New York City— also provides great business opportunities for companies in Maryland.

  2. TRANSPORTATION TO SUPPORT GLOBAL BUSINESS

Whether global companies need access to a deep-water port, or need to quickly access international airports, Maryland has you covered. Maryland’s transportation infrastructure also includes four foreign trade zones, and a network of major highways.

  3. INCREDIBLE DIVERSITY

With incredible diversity, Maryland is home to many foreign-born residents. In fact, foreign-born residents comprise 14.9% of Maryland’s population, and three Maryland cities are among the top 10 in WalletHub’s 2017 ranking of the most diverse cities.

  4. RESOURCES & PARTNERSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

Maryland has more than 30 business incubators, including the Maryland International Incubator, which helps international, technology-based, companies successfully enter the U.S. marketplace. All foreign companies coming to Maryland can consider Commerce’s Office of International Investment and Trade a key partner, ready to assist with a variety of activities, from identifying partners to site selection.

  5. AN UNMATCHED WORKFORCE

Maryland companies benefit from a highly educated workforce. Maryland is first in the percentage of professional and technical workers, and has the nation’s highest concentration of employed doctoral scientists and engineers. In Maryland, companies can be confident in a strong workforce pipeline.

If you’re attending Select USA, see members of our team at booth 1116. Want to know more about Foreign Direct Investment in Maryland? Download our brochure for more information.

Michigan Friday: Interesting News and Notes

  • Louisville Basketball is being punished for having a prostitute in the dorms entertaining recruits.  They might have to vacate some wins including the National Championship game against Michigan in 2013.   Does that mean, Michigan would be the National Champion that year?  No, the history books will show there wasn't a winner in the game.    I think we should claim as the National Champion that year!  Give Spike the MVP!  Side Note: NCAA if you really want to penalize a University for cheating, take away their National Championship and give it to the team they played and followed the rules.

  • Speaking of Michigan Basketball, they got a 2019 commit in Clarkston big man Taylor Currie.  Taylor is 6'8 and probably has a few inches still to grow still.   He is young big man that rebounds and can shoot the 3.   Many of the 2019 rating are not in yet but Scout has him as an early 4 star.

  • Michigan lost a QB recruit last night when Tyler Shough committed to North Carolina.   I hear the reason he committed was he knew the "Ceiling is the Roof" when it comes to Carolina Football.   Michigan was in early on Tyler who grew up a Michigan fan, my guess is he has a clearer route to playing time at NC over Michigan.    In Ann Arbor, there are going to be guys with the names of Milton and McCaffrey in his way to playing time.

  • Michigan's Band will be heading to Dallas for the opener against Florida.

  • 2018 3-star OT Raiqwon O'Neal has a Michigan offer and is expected on campus for a visit next week.

  • Top ranked 2019 TE Grayson Boomer visited Ann Arbor yesterday and was offered.

  • I'm a sucker for these types of photos.  I love that Coach Mattison had his DL unit over for dinner.  Lawrence Marshall looks huge! I also like seeing Aubrey Solomon in the photo.

James is expected to report to Ann Arbor a week from this Saturday on June 24th.

Wolverine Wednesday: More MSU News and Some Recruiting News and Notes

  • MSU lost another player as Vayante Copeland has left the team.  He started 5 games at CB last year before he broke his foot.   Vayante also had a marijuana legal issue back in 2015.   Players keep dropping from this program and this is eleventh player to leave the program with eligibility since January.

  • Police reports say that former MSU Staff member and Sound Mind and Sound Body leader, Curtis Blackwell interfered with their investigation into the sexual assault charges brought a couple weeks ago against the 3 former players.  No charges have been filed against Blackwell.

  • Michigan Baseball Coach Erik Bakich has been offered a new 5 year contract.   He made $182,000 last season. South Carolina and Stanford have been rumored to be interested in interviewing Erik.

  • 2018 TN OL Jerome Carvin has Michigan in his final top 10 schools.

Michigan Tuesday: Is Happy For Coach LaVall Jordan

Image result for Lavall Jordan
from twitter
LaVall Jordan was a strong leader for the Michigan Basketball program.  He helped Michigan make runs to the Final 4 and developed NBA talent.  He was overdue for a head coaching job and took the role at Milwaukee- Wisconsin last year.   He was 11-24 in his first year but took his team to the Horizon League tournament championship game before losing to Northern Kentucky.

Last night he was named the head coach of Butler, where he played college basketball.  That is a great job and I hope he does well.   If he is successful in Indy, he could be a candidate in a few years to replace Coach B when he decides to retire.  Fun fact:  Did you know Lavell is from Albion, Michigan?

Congratulations Coach!

  • More B-Ball News:  Michigan will host CMU and travel to Texas next season.

  • 2019 #1 ranked  RB Noah Cain is planning a visit to Ann Arbor.  He plays at IMG.

  • I mentioned 2018 IL TE Luke Ford yesterday, Michigan also offered yesterday.

  • Jimmy said on the Rich Eisen show that he is not in favor of Friday night games and that Saturday is the day for the Wolverines.   Can't agree more.

Michigan Monday: Jalen Mayfield At The Best of The Midwest

This time of year is where we see nothing but camps for football prospects all across the country.   Since we won't see real games for 3 months, kids get a chance to impress the Recruiting Services in these camps.  Since the NCAA rules pretty much killed off the Sound Mind and Body camp in Detroit, it has been replaced by the Best in the Midwest camp at Grand Valley State.

From 24/7 it seems Michigan commit Jalen Mayfield was impressive:

Alpha Dog - 2018 four-star OT Jalen Mayfield (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central)
It was a difficult choice between Mayfield and Belleville (MI) 2019 four-star OT Devontae Dobbs, but we're going with Mayfield due to a slight edge in consistency in a lengthy 1v1 morning session. 247Sports has ranked Mayfield as the top 2018 prospect in the state of Michigan, and the Army All-American showed elite balance and athleticism on the outside in dominating the vast majority of his reps. He will become even better as he continues to build weight (and he's already up to 273).

On a side note, Devontae Dobbs will become a very important recruit in the next class since he is so close to Ann Arbor.
  • GA 2018 DB Quindarious Monday attended the Best in the Midwest camp and also visited Ann Arbor on Sunday.   Wait? I think he should have visited today.

  • 4 Star 2018 TE from Illinois Luke Ford de-committed from Arkansas this past weekend and has opened up his recruitment.   Michigan has been in contact.

  • Former Michigan Basketball assistant LaVall Jordan is a candidate for the Butler head coaching job.  LaVall is currently the head coach at UW-Milwaukee.

  • Jimmy was at the USC Rising Stars camp on Sunday in LA.

Michigan Friday: Wolverines Headed To The Dean Dome

Michigan's Men's Basketball Team will meet North Carolina and current national champion in the Big Ten/ACC Match up next year.   Its great that Michigan will get one of the top match-ups but will have to travel to the Dean Dome for the first time.    Should be an exciting visit for the young Wolverines next season.

  • Sunny is keeping it Sunny and has decided to transfer to UCLA over Ann Arbor per Sam Webb.  Sunny Odogwu is a grad transfer offensive lineman from Miami that was down to Michigan and UCLA.

  • OSU Basketball has struck out with its first two choices for the Basketball Job with no's from Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg and Greg McDermott at Creighton.  Reports are now that OSU is focusing on Butler's head coach Chris Holtman and current Warriors assistant Mike Brown.   Breaking news is that Butler coach Chris Holtman has taken the job.

  • Jimmy is off to Washington again:  Per Mlive:  Michigan's head coach will be in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday as the Legal Services Corporation presents its new report: "The Justice Gap: Measuring the Unmet Civil Legal Needs of Low-Income Americans."

Q&A with Columbia therapy company Verbal Beginnings

Like most great partnerships, Nick Chappell and Diana Wolf were brought together from very different locations and experiences. In 2011, their shared passion for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy and the possibilities it has for children diagnosed with autism allowed them to team up and create Verbal Beginnings, a home- and center-based company.

ABA therapy focuses on the principals that explain how learning takes place. The field has developed many techniques, such as positive reinforcement, for increasing useful behaviors and reducing behavior that may interfere with learning. Nick, a graduate of Northeastern University, was first inspired by such behavioral work through a college job at a summer camp for special needs children. Diana, a University of Maryland Baltimore County alumna, found the same professional spark while working at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

It is estimated that one in every 68 children in the United States is affected by autism. The life-changing role that ABA therapy can play for these children was not lost on Diana and Nick. They started Verbal Beginnings with the goal of building a community within a larger network of clinicians—this would provide support that would allow professionals to increase the quality of care for families and create a greater demand for high quality ABA Therapy.

Nick and Diana sat down with MDBizNews to talk about their work at Verbal Beginnings and what the future holds for this ever-changing field.

Nick Chappell Verbal BeginningsWhat makes Verbal Beginnings different from other learning programs?
Nick: No two children who are diagnosed with autism are alike. Our therapy is often taught in a 1:1 ratio and is individualized for each child with the goal of making meaningful and socially significant changes. The skills that we teach can improve a child’s ability to communicate, develop behavior management skills, become independent with daily living activities, develop age appropriate social skills, and make improvements in feeding.

Diana Wolf Verbal BeginningsWhere do you find your services are most needed in Maryland?
Diana: Services for ABA therapy are high across all areas in Maryland. Because ABA therapy is the number one recommended tool for children diagnosed with autism, many parents are choosing it as the primary treatment for their child. Prior to 2015, access to ABA therapy was cost prohibitive and remained inaccessible for many families in need. Following the passage of numerous bills in 2014, access to ABA therapy immediately became tangible to many families.

Who can Verbal Beginnings benefit? What are the differences between the various programs you offer?
Nick: We have several programs that are designed for children at different stages of development. Our largest program brings one-on-one ABA therapy to each child’s home, where our therapists implement individualized treatment plans in the child’s natural environment. We have also developed social skills groups located in various areas of Maryland that are designed to meet the socialization needs of these children. Here, participants are paired with peers of similar ages and have the opportunity to learn and practice skills that will help them fit in and be more successful in social groups.

Diana: We recently opened a large Early Intervention Center in Columbia that meets the intensive needs of children between the ages of two to seven. The program provides children with an average of 30 hours per week of therapy and integrates one-on-one ABA therapy, social skills, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy and family training. The program supports a wide body of research indicating that the child will be more successful if therapy is started at an early age.

Where is Verbal Beginnings headed? What are some goals for the future?
Nick: Verbal Beginnings is always expanding. We have grown exponentially over the past six years and plan to continue to do so in the years to come. Our more immediate goals are focused on recruiting, the education of families and professionals, as well as opening more centers across Maryland for accessibility.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in launching this business and how have you overcome them?
Nick: The biggest challenge we have faced with launching this business is keeping up with the demand for services. There is a high demand for services and the level of experience required to provide them effectively limits the number of qualified professionals. We have tackled this obstacle by developing numerous internship opportunities for interested professionals that allow them to work intensely with highly-trained mentors who provide the education and experience necessary to successfully pass our professional competency assessments. In September 2016, we hosted a cohort and provided scholarships to staff seeking educational opportunities to obtain licensure in the ABA field.

What successes inspire your continued work?
Diana: We have a lot of success stories that we hear on a regular basis. The best part of our field is that a child’s progress is closely monitored, so we see significant improvements every day. Now and then we hear a story that brings tears to a parent’s eyes.

Specifically, we have worked with families who were told by other professionals that their child will never talk, but within a few months of ABA therapy, they begin to hear their child speak for the first time. One situation that stands out with us was when a set of parents heard their child say “I love you” for the first time.

Michigan Thursday: Big Game Bob Steps Down

In a surprise announcement yesterday, Bob Stoops decided to retire after 18 years as Oklahoma's head coach.   Bob said this decision was not health related that it's just perfect timing for him to move on.   The 33 year old offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is going to take over for Bob.  Lincoln has interviewed for other jobs the last couple years, including Houston.

I wonder if we will see Stoops pop up again like Urban Meyer did when OSU hired him.   He played at Iowa right?  I'm just saying.....................

  • We are expected to hear in the next 24 hours or so where Miami transfer Sunny Odogwu will play next year.  His decision is down to Michigan and UCLA.  “Those two schools, you can't get any better than having those head coaches that have experience in the NFL,” said Hailemariam (Sunny's HS coach). “The offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, the medical team, athletic training staff (are all) unbelievable. Those places are extremely tremendous places for Sunny to finish out his career and he's just trying to find out what's the best for him ultimately."

  • Reports are that OSU has offered their basketball job to Creighton’s Greg McDermott.

  • Here is a good Q&A from USA Today-Draft Wire and the best defensive line coach in the world, Greg Mattison.

  • More info on David Dawson leaving Iowa State, it seems he is retiring from football and has a family situation right now.

  • Per Steve Lornez:  Michigan is recruiting hard Apopka (Fla.) four-star offensive tackle William Barnes who attended the FAU camp this week and is looking to take a visit up to A2.   William is friends with Michigan QB commit Joe Milton.

Wolverine Wednesday: News On Former Wolverines

An ABC/ESPN pilot Jalen vs. Everyone was released last night at 7:30.   It had some funny parts and some rough spots.   Running into Kobe was probably the funniest part of the entire show.   I'm not sure what type of number it got in the ratings but I hope the executives give it a shot and fund it for next season.  ABC passed on it and ESPN will now have to make the decision.

  • David Harris got released by the Jets.  He is now considering retirement.  I remember when Rex Ryan told the media he was the best player on the team.   He has had a great NFL career.

  • Schedule update: Air Force will be a noon kick on BTN.   This game and the triple option scares me.

  • 5 star QB Justin Fields has de-committed from Penn State

  • 2018 4-star OG Emil Ekiyor has recently stated he is '100%' committed to Michigan.  He was recently concerned with some lack of communication and other programs started to recruit him pretty hard.

  • I heard that both Aubrey Solomon and Brad Robbins have both enrolled already and can participate in Summer Work outs.

CGC Holdings expands, adds jobs in Howard County

CGC Holdings, Inc., a food distribution company in Jessup, recently completed construction and moved into a new 160,000-square-foot building in Howard County. Located at 7540 Assateague Drive, the new facility contains the company’s headquarters, warehouse, and distribution operations. CGC Holdings currently has 225 full-time employees and anticipates adding an additional 125 new jobs over the next four years.

“We are excited about growing our business in Howard County,” said John Cefalu, Chief Executive Officer of CGC Holdings. “Our new building is state-of-the-art and triple the size of our former facility, and it enables us to better serve our customers with the freshest produce and seafood in the area. We have expanded our fresh cut produce and fresh fish lines and have room for more growth.”

“Our administration is excited to help companies like CGC Holdings expand and create new jobs and opportunities for our citizens,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “CGC Holdings joins a number of companies that have recently chosen to grow their business in our state, demonstrating our ongoing efforts to strengthen the economy and change Maryland for the better.”

CGC Holdings is the parent company of two related family businesses, G. Cefalu & Bro. Inc. and Capital Seaboard. Founded in 1904, G. Cefalu & Bro. is a fifth-generation wholesale produce business with more than 110 years of servicing grocery chains and other large food outlets in Maryland and the greater Mid-Atlantic region.

Capital Seaboard was founded in 1956 as a seafood distributor and now operates as a food-service provider, offering fresh seafood and produce to a wide range of local and regional customers, including restaurants, hotels, country clubs, and health care facilities. The two companies first came together 12 years ago, and in 2012, they formed CGC Holdings to formalize the joining of the two businesses.

“CGC Holdings’ continued growth and expansion here is a testament to the positive local business environment in Howard County,” said Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman.

Michigan Tuesday: David Dawson Out At Iowa State

David Dawson the 4 star offensive lineman that decided to leave Michigan as a graduate transfer is no longer with Iowa State.    In a text to The Register Monday night, (head coach) Campbell said that Dawson has been "gone a couple weeks to think about (his decision)." Apparently, Dawson figured it's time to move on with his life.  "Better it happens now than during the season," Campbell said.

We wish David good luck in the next chapter of life.

Michigan Monday: New Uniforms, WR Perry Back and Camps Begin

Since the calendar switched to June last week, that means camps are being held all over the country.   Jimmy and staff will be everywhere and doing their own camps in Ann Arbor as well.

Here are two nuggets that came out of one of his camps media Q&A's:
  • Sounds like Grant Perry has found a settlement to his East Lansing troubles and is back with the team as a full time participant.   That is good news for the Michigan offense next year.
  • Jimmy also said that the Wolverines might wear an alternative jersey next year.  That will be interesting!

-The Michigan Baseball team went 0-2 this weekend and now out of the College Baseball tournament.

-To answer the question from Friday's Post, whether the SEC will allow former ND QB Malik Zaire to transfer to Florida?  The answer is Yes.   He will most likely be the starter against Michigan in Dallas.

-Michigan made the top 5 for Houston CB D'shawn Jamison.  His list also includes: Texas, TCU, Oregon, and USC.

-2018 GA OL James Ohonba visited Ann Arbor this past weekend!  Here a quote from Scouts from May:  He is a 6-foot-4, 320 pound offensive lineman with a size 18 shoe and strong academics.

-2018 3-star TE Lee Payton will visit A2

-Both Joe Milton and Tyler Shough were at the Elite 11 Finals in LA this weekend.

Michigan Friday: Will The SEC Let Malik Zaire Play At Florida?

Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire reportedly wants to play at Florida as a grad transfer next year.   The rumor mill is spinning that Florida is his choice but the SEC in penalizing the Gator for taking transfers that didn't meet academic requirements.

Per TomVh from ESPN:  The Gators are currently in the second year of a three-year penalty for taking grad transfers who ultimately did not meet academic requirements.
That penalty precludes the staff from taking a grad transfer until 2018, which means that Zaire would not be able to consider Florida as his school with only one year of eligibility remaining. That penalty -- and the punishment it brings -- is being voted on at the SEC meetings on Friday and could clear a path for Zaire to enroll at Florida.

Zaire has visited Wisconsin and North Carolina and is also considering Texas and Florida.  NC took former LSU QB Brandon Harris as a grad transfer, so they are probably out.   Which would leave Wisconsin and Texas if Florida is not a go.   It seems the former ND QB is waiting for the SEC to rule before he makes his decision.

  • 2018 4-star WR Elijah Moore wants to visit A2 soon.
  • 2018 NC 4-star DL Alim McNeill will visit Ann Arbor and Penn State this month.
  • Michigan has offered 3-star FL WR Shocky Jacques-Louis, who is a current UK commit.
  • Michigan made the top 7 for 5-star DE Micah Parsons, he is most likely going to OSU.

With 3 recruiting services and many reporters covering the Wolverines, it's hard to be surprised by any development.   This news was a surprise as Miami OT grad transfer Sunny Odogwu visited Michigan this week for two days and left on Wednesday.

Odogwu is 6-foot-8 and 325-pounds OT who announced he was transferring from Miami less then two weeks ago.  He started 14 games at right tackle over three seasons at Miami.   He is eligible to play right away and will only have 1 year of eligibility left.   He is flying to see Jedd Fisch at UCLA today.

“Sunny and I had a good conversation, and he informed me that he feels his best opportunity to get the most playing time would be at another school,” Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “Sunny has been a great teammate and leader for this program, and we will miss him

Per NBC:

Odogwu is coming off surgery for a right knee injury late last season. After starting 12 games for the Hurricanes, Odogwu was forced to miss Miami’s bowl game and later was limited in spring practice drills. Odogwu had to undergo surgery for a right knee injury late in the 2015 season as well.

If he is healthy, I think he is a take for Michigan, though it sounds like he is going to have a number of options.   If he was limited in Spring Drills I wonder how healthy he really is?

Full Page Skin Advertisement testing

Hello,

SpiceHeads, you might recall a topic by Kalyana (Spiceworks) a few months ago called "Newbanner ads comeing Soon". One of these types is a full-page skin (also called a wallpaper) which is a graphic that lives in the background of the Community. In fact, you may see it now since we're testing it in this group.

Some things you'll notice is that the skin does not interfere with the user interface and the only clickable elements are the normal ad units (such as a leaderboard ad and the standard sidebar ads). Also, this is not an ad we imagine you'll see typically as it is intended to run for a day or two in support of a larger campaign such as product launches.

Changes coming to the Community homepage and feed!

Hello,

We've been pretty focused on site experience lately here at HQ, as you may have noticed. (See our clean-up around user profiles, Community digest emails, and our "toolkit") And the next thing that we're ready to address is our concept of "Home" within the Spiceworks Community.

Depending upon when you joined the Spiceworks Community, you currently have one of three homepages: the old feed, the Start page or the new feed. And what we've realized over the last year of beta testing the new feed is that the feed and the Start page are really different features that both have a place in SpiceHeads' navigation of the Community. The Start page is full of hand-curated topics, articles, How-To's, and projects from across the Community and managed by our editorial team.
