Michigan Friday: Basketball Has a Big Win On The Recruiting Trail

Scouts.com - Brandon is looking right through you right now!
I don't follow basketball recruiting as closely as football recruiting and this might be an overstatement but I think this is the biggest win for Coach B in recruiting since Mitch McGary announced he was Maize and Blue.  (Kam Chatman might have been a 5 star to some services but he didn't work out in A2 and transferred to Detroit)

Brandon Johns is a 4 star 6'8 205 pound power forward from East Lansing.   That is correct, East Lansing the home of Tom Izzo and MSU.    Brandon is rated in the 40th-50th player range in the country by most services (#43 Rivals, #40 ESPN, #50 24/7), Scouts is an outlier with a ranking of #100.

I'm sure East Lansing and many Sparty fans are in shock how a East Lansing kid could pick Michigan or Michigan State.   ESPN says his game reminds them of Shane Battier from Duke and the NBA.

Michigan has two commits in the 2018 class as Johns joins David DeJulius a PG from Detroit.

  • While Michigan was celebrating the Johns win, they got an unexpected loss when SF Pete Nance committed to Northwestern while on a visit there.   Pete was expected to be a very strong lean towards the Wolverines.   I'm guessing with the Johns news and former Michigan assistant Billy Donlon leaving for NW this week had something to do with Pete's quick change of direction.   Coach B is 0-2 with the Nance family right now.

  • IMG 2019 5 Star RB Noah Cain really enjoyed his trip to A2 last weekend.  He has some solid quotes to Mlive: "They run a pro-style set, they use their running backs a lot - passing game, protection," he said. "The things that they do get you ready for the next level. I'm definitely trying to get to the highest level of football. Coach Harbaugh and his staff definitely prepare you for that."--"They definitely went up on my list," said Cain, who plans on returning to Michigan for the game against Ohio State on Nov. 25. "Everything I expected, they just doubled that."
