This week is National Week of Making, a celebration of the innovation and creativity of makers across the nation. Held from June 16-22, the week-long event encourages makers – including maker spaces, hacker spaces, community centers, non-profits, universities, and more – to host events and invite others in the community to come learn about their initiatives and participate in making with hands-on experiences.
Over the weekend, the Catylator Makerspace in Silver Spring hosted a free activity, Take Apart Day, for children and adults who were interested in learning the ins and outs of electronics. By disassembling desktop computers, laptops, and printers, attendees learned first-hand what goes into building and fixing electronics while recognizing the importance of saving the environment.
This week, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) is hosting an open house with its new Innovation Hub and portable Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB). The Innovation Hub features a collaborative workspace to boost creativity and innovative solutions among NAWCAD employees. The FABLAB is the division’s mobile makerspace that allows makers to test their prototype designs in real-time. Located at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County, NAWCAD contributes to the military installation’s economic impact of nearly 37,000 jobs in the state.
