Candice King was homeless and a single mother when she started in a biotechnology training program several years ago. She didn't have a traditional science background — she'd worked as a cook for a dozen years.
But King pushed through, completing six months of training in 2013 from Baltimore's BioTechnical Institute of Maryland. She landed an internship, which led to a temporary job, which led to permanent employment as a lab technician at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She's now hoping for a promotion to lab manager in a few months.
