Mountain Maryland gears up for festival season

This Memorial Day weekend, the Allegany County Fairgrounds will once again be alive with the sound of acoustic folk, bluegrass, newgrass, and roots-rock music at the annual DelFest.

The four-day festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and in a big way. What Rolling Stone magazine hails as “one of the best string-based lineups of the summer” will see the addition of country-music superstar Dierks Bentley, who will play alongside a DelFest staple, The Travelin’ McCourys.

The festival will host favorites like Sierra Hull, Railroad Earth, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, and of course the festival’s namesake, The Del McCoury Band. Head for the hills May 25-28 and immerse yourself in Mountain Maryland’s premier down-home music fest.

DelFest won’t be the only great attraction to grace the Fairgrounds this year. The Greater Cumberland Raceway has been revamped; for the first time in three years, cars will once again be hitting the dirt-track in races scheduled April through October. Contestants from Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and even Delaware are already slated to compete. Be sure to grab a ticket and head to the grandstands for this family-friendly thrill that’s sure to rev up motorheads of all ages.

Additionally, returning to Cumberland for its second year will be the Whiskey Rebellion Festival – two days of history, music and entertainment, and of course, whiskey. Sagamore Spirit of Baltimore, White Tiger Distillery of Stevensville, and McClintock Distilling Company of Frederick are just three of the many returning distilleries to this year’s event.

The whiskey tasting will take place on Friday, June 9 from 6-11 p.m. at the Allegany Museum. Period-appropriate musical performances, local history lectures, and fun activities for all participants will take place Saturday, June 10, starting at noon and ending with a concert at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
