MedStar Health hackers demand ransom in bitcoin

Hackers unleashed malware this week that encrypted data throughout the Maryland-based health system that runsUnion Memorial Hospital.

The MedStar Health data is now frozen, and the hackers want a ransom to free it up again. The Baltimore Sunreported the details of the request on Wednesday:

The deal proposed by the hackers is this: Send 3 bitcoins — $1,250 at current exchange rates — for the digital key to unlock a single infected computer, or 45 bitcoins — about $18,500 — for keys to all of them.

An image sent to Washington Post reporters said a message that appeared on employees’ screens gave the hospital 10 days to comply.

Maryland Commerce receives Trade & Industry Development award

The Maryland Department of Commerce has received a 2016 CiCi (Corporate Investment and Community Impact) Award on behalf of the Pinnacle Foods project in Hagerstown. The award is presented by Trade & Industry Development magazine and honors commitment to economic development including corporate investment and community impact across the country.

A leading producer, marketer and distributor of high-quality branded food products in the U.S., Pinnacle Foods announced in September 2015 the opening of a manufacturing facility at the former Unilever ice cream plant – a site that has struggled to recover since the economic downturn. Pinnacle Foods acquired the property in order to expand operations to the East Coast where it will produce its gardein™ brand of plant-based protein.

Pinnacle Foods was among 15 projects chosen for a Community Impact award. The Fortune 1000 company anticipates creating up to 125 full-time jobs by December 2018, with plans to hire 200 employees over the next five years, making it one of the larger private-sector employers in the county.

“We are proud to receive this award, which reinforces that we are continuing to move Maryland in the right direction by working with our local partners to attract world-class companies like Pinnacle Foods,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “Projects like this are significant, not only for the job creation that comes with opening a facility like this, but the transformational impact it will have on the Hagerstown community.”

The CiCi Awards commemorate the largest capital investments for development or expansion announced within a designated year, while also recognizing projects for the positive impact they will have on a community, regardless of the amount of money invested. Among the criteria considered for recognition in the community impact category include the number of jobs created, the region’s average level of income, and any area plant closings or openings.

This University of Maryland spinoff just hit the market with its 3-D sound technology

Ramani Duraiswami is the first person to admit that you have to try his technology to truly understand what it is.

Duraiswami is the founder of VisiSonics, a company spun out of the University of Maryland that works with three-dimensional sound.

Based on name alone, 3-D sound is confusing.

But think of it this way: Instead of listening to music through earbuds and hearing it in both ears, imagine that when using a virtual reality helmet, you would experience sound from all sides of your brain — making it seem like a bird is flying over top of you, or someone is walking behind you.

How Kevin Plank put a spotlight on Baltimore at SXSW

Kevin Plank’s keynote at SXSW made headlines with his declaration that “data is the new oil” and a call to startup founders to make money right away. But one of the most passionate moments of the Under Armour founder’s talk came when moderator and Fast Company editor Robert Safian asked Plank about his investment in Baltimore (via his grand plans in Port Covington).

Plank said he has been asked how he is addressing the issues that came to the fore after the riots that followed Freddie Gray’s funeral, and it comes down to the fact that he owns a big, urban-based company, and “cities need jobs,” he said.

Michigan Thursday: Doesn't Understand Michigan's Basketball Roster

Michigan Basketball headlines this week includes:
  • Spike Transfers
  • Michigan is still 1 scholarship over the limit for next year
  • Ricky Doyle transfers
  • Michigan is now at it's scholarship limit
  • Michigan is still recruiting for next years class and even reaches out to a possible guard transfer candidate from Colombia
  • Coach B blocks Spike from transferring to other Big Ten schools

What is going on here?  Sure we don't have all the information.   Spike may not be as healthy as he says, but wouldn't Coach B take Spike over a transfer from Colombia if he was healthy?  If Coach B is worried about taking away playing time from Xavier Simpson, why is he looking at brining in another graduate guard?

This is the second transfer guard Coach B has looked into during this brief off season.   Where is the room for this type of transfer?

As for the in conference transfer, I agree with Coach B.  I don't think you should be able to go to another Big 10 team.   Yes, I understand that Iowa's QB lead the Wolverines to a 10 win season and a Citrus Bowl win last season.   Iowa wasn't on Michigan's schedule and I still believe you shouldn't be able to transfer in conference.   It's too close for comfort for me.

  • Don Brown says he is close to installing his full defense this Spring.  I hope he doesn't show too much on Friday and takes it on easy on the QB's.

  • NFL Scouts think Big Willie Henry is underrated and might go higher then some of the media are predicating.

What email marketing says about the 2016 presidential race

You may be following CNN this election season, but Kyle J. Britt andMichael Kinstlinger are following the 2016 presidential race through their inboxes.

The two digital marketers at Havas Helia’s Inner Harbor office started gathering data from the different campaigns on email and social media for the 2016 race. As the race heated up, they started examining the data on a podcast, called Data Defeats Truman. The podcast is nonpartisan, and Havas Helia is sponsoring.

They spoke about the election data at SXSW, and are set to present at the Light City U creative conference on Saturday.

MedStar Health says main IT systems almost completely back after ‘despicable attack’

Clinicians with MedStar Health Inc. are now able to review medical records electronically after the Columbia-based health system announced Wednesday it was nearing full restoration of its three main clinical IT systems.

The news came two days after the $4.6 billion health system's online operations were shut down Monday as a result of malware. MedStar officials said they detected malware had penetrated their information systems and shut the system down as a defense tactic.

UAV firm, kids pilot drone camp in West Baltimore

At Cumberland and Carey Park in West Baltimore, a group of kids gathered around Emo Unoh on Tuesday morning. A quadcopter buzzed few yards out and a few heads up.

“Remember,” said Umoh, the COO of Global Air Media, “it’s facing us, so the controls are reversed.”

For the 10 West Baltimore kids, it was their second day of a spring break week at Drone Camp. They described a few mishaps that happened the day before, but on Tuesday it was all soft landings.

Light City director: Opening night gave Baltimore ‘the big hug it needed’

For organizers of Light City Baltimore, the opening events couldn't have gone any better.

Festival Director Kathy Hornig said Monday night's kickoff event, the Creative Alliance's Lantern Paradewas "glorious" and a "dream come true" for Hornig, who for the last 18 months has been helping to plan the week-long events of light installations, conferences and concerts.

"It turned out so much better than I could have imagined," Hornig said. "It was like we gave Baltimore the big hug that it needed."

Wolverine Wednesay: QB Battle Continues

With all the media attention and access to Spring Practice this year, it seems some things are getting clearer:

  • This team is getting better all over the field.
  • Michigan's defense continues to be its strength
  • The offensive line is looking to build on the Florida game and continues to improve
  • The LB's are still a question mark but with the now healed Mike McCray could be fine
  • None of the QB's have separated themselves and each continues to make at least one big mistake a practice.

It seems its a three headed race between O'Korn, Speight, and Morris.  The pre-spring practice buzz was all O'Korn but it seems he hasn't separated himself from the pack.  Morris continues to have a rifle for an arm but still doesn't see the field like he should.   I was impressed how Speight won the Minnesota game last year and seems like a big QB that would be steady but not a superstar.   It will be interesting to see what happens on Friday.

  • I posted this late yesterday but Ricky Doyle is transferring from Michigan's basketball program.  He had a nice freshman year, but struggled this past season.   Michigan has a number of big men coming in and Wagner has a very nice upside.  The program is now at it's scholarship limit for next year.

  • Basketball transfers seems to be something that is happening all over.  OSU is losing 4 or more players from their large freshman class.

  • IMG Academy 2017 OLB Jordan Anthony is expected to be at the Spring Game on Friday.

  • Michigan has two RB's in this class already but 2017 Warren (MI) De La Salle ATH Allen Stritzinger who plays RB or CB is still very interested in the Wolverines.

Why everyone should be interested in this accessibility hackathon

Ed Slattery is always looking for innovation that can help people with disabilities.

After an accident left his son Matthew with a traumatic brain injury, Slattery undertook a massive renovation to make his home accessible. The upgrades include a power-assist chairlift and iPad-controlled functions.

“You look at the world very differently,” he said.

So when he attended the Baltimore Hackathon in the fall and saw a wheelchair controlled by a Myo armband, he was inspired to see hackers thinking about the disabled community. Slattery was so inspired he announced that he was organizing an event that day.

Michigan Tuesday: Spike To Transfer

I know we don't have the full story here but I just don't like Spike playing in another jersey.   Is he fully healthy?

"In the last month, I've gotten another set of X-rays and an MRI, and the doctors said everything looks great," Albrecht said. "They said there's no reason why I can play next year and be back to my old self."

Was his scholarship taken with a recruit after he said he was retiring?
Michigan is still over 1 scholarship for next year even with Spike and Caris leaving.

"We're both disappointed in how it ended here at Michigan and the fact that it came to this," Albrecht said. "I just told him that I'm so grateful for my four years at Michigan and for the opportunity, but I also told him that I dedicated my entire life to the game of basketball and if I get an opportunity to play a fifth year and get my Master's, that's not something I can pass up on.

"As difficult as that was for him to hear, I'm sure, he was very understanding. It was very respectful on both ends."

Coach B has a bit of a perception problem right now.   A guy he let leave the program last year ends up being the Big10 6th man of the year.   He doesn't seem to be finding the diamonds in the rough like Burke, GR3, Hardaway or Stauskas anymore.   Even his highly ranked guys have struggled in his program.

His 1-3-1 defense seems dead or dying and now he is letting a cult hero like Spike Albrecht leave the program.   I know Michigan Basketball will never be Duke, UK or North Carolina but we should be able to compete for Big Ten titles most years.   Recruiting is the life blood of every program and we are starting to see a bit of a dip in that area.   Coach B has some work to do this summer to get this program back on track.

--------------------------------------

J'Marick Woods commits to Michigan yesterday!

Woods is a 3 star to all the services minus Scout which ranks him as a 4.  ESPN, Rivals and 247 all have Woods near 4 star status and he could move up with some summer camps and a good senior season.

Woods is the type of hybrid player Jimmy and Don Brown loves.  He is 6'4 and 200 pounds and could play corner but is probably headed for a Safety or even a hybrid LB role.   He is known to be a good run stopper and has the size to match-up with TE's in coverage.

He has a nice offer list that includes the likes of: Florida, Duke, PSU, VA Tech, Louisville, Miss State, Tennessee, UK, Wake, GA Tech and Vandy.   It seems the young man is a good student as well with the likes of Wake, Duke, Vandy and GA Tech offers.

Woods should get a chance to compete for playing time right away as he plans on enrolling in January.  He will have spring practice and Michigan is losing starters Delano Hill and Dymonte Thomas to graduation.   Michigan will also be looking for more safeties/DB's in this class and seem to be in good shape with Jaylen Kelly-Powell and AJ Harris.

Breaking News: Michigan Adds Another 2017 RB!

Michigan has added another RB to it's 2017 class with the commitment this morning of AJ Dillon from Groton, MA.

AJ Dillon is a 4 star RB to Rivals and is 6'0 foot and 228 pounds as a junior.  His offer list is impressive one as it includes:  BC, Florida State, Iowa, Miss St, Nebraska, ND, Syracuse, Virginia, VTech and Wisconsin.  Expect to see him in the De'Veon Smith role in A2.

Per 24/7:

“All of the schools I have visited have a lot to offer from an amazing staff to amazing player to just being amazing schools themselves,” Dillon told 247Sports. “However after my visits, my family and I believe that Michigan is the best place for me to continue as a student athlete.

“After my Michigan visit, I felt like my life after football would be set up with the connections and education I would get there. To tie in with that, you add the aspect of world-class facilities and an amazing football program filled with great players and a great staff. I also felt like the city of Ann Arbor would be somewhere I could call home. I just stepped on campus and felt comfortable.”

“The coaches have told me they plan to use me as a running back,” he stated. “They think I’m an every down back there. When I told them I committed they were very excited. Coach Harbaugh let out an excited scream when I told them!”

Rivals ranks AJ as the 16th best RB and #1 Player in Mass.

As a junior, Dillon rushed for 1,886 yards on 10.1 yards per carry, scoring 26 touchdowns in just nine games. His team was the Independent School League and New England Prep champions, and he was a first-team selection in both leagues (in addition to being co-MVP of each).

This is Michigan's second RB (Kurt Taylor) in the class and it's 7th commit.

Welcome to Michigan AJ!

Michigan Monday: The Roster Shake Up Continues

Many of us had wondered where the attrition would come from after signing such a large 2016 recruiting class.   The news had been slipping out slowly as guys moved on and then we got hit by a tidal wave of news this weekend.

Jimmy announced that Jaron Dukes and Reon Dawson are retiring due to medical issues.  Which means they will stay on scholarship but will never be able to play football again as a Wolverine.

Freddy Canteen who has been a WR and sometimes a DB, recently had shoulder surgery and they are waiting to see if he will join Dukes and Dawson on a medical redshirt.

If all 3 go on a medical that would get Michigan under the 85 limit.   From my understanding, Alabama recruit Dytarious Johnson has until Friday to sign his LOI.  If he is not able to sign Friday, he can still come to Michigan and sign directly for his scholarship.

  • Sam Webb reported that Dave Dawson, Jehu Chesson, Shelton Johnson, Kingston Davis and Karan Higdon were out of practice and in street clothes for the Ford Field practice.

  • Alabama Safety J'Marick Woods is expected to make his announcement on Tuesday.  Michigan is the presumed leader for this 6'4 DB.

  • Michigan Basketball announced that Caris LeVert had another foot surgery this time in NYC.

  • 2018 DE Aidan Hutchinson got offered from Michigan. this weekend.  He is Chris Hutchinson's son.

REALShare Gets Real in Frederick

Guest feature: Sandy Wagerman is a research specialist for the Frederick County Office of Economic Development. Follow Frederick County OED on Facebook and Twitter.

REALShare Frederick is a quarterly event for commercial real estate professionals who have properties in Frederick. The Frederick County Office of Economic Development (OED) created the program in 2014 as a way to ignite local commercial real estate conversations.

“REALShare has put our office in an advantageous position within the state to be one of the first economic development groups to offer this to our commercial real estate professionals,” said Frederick County’s OED director Helen Propheter. “The events have helped us form deeper relationships with this sector that is often the front door of prospect opportunities.”

“Real estate brokers get the latest from leading deal makers and network with the industry’s best,” added Jodie Bollinger, business development specialist for commercial real estate.

Building on the success of the inaugural year, REALShare also covers informational topics hosted at a local property for sale or lease. The events are so popular that OED has been able to secure hosts for the next 18 months of meetings.

The first REALShare of 2016 was held this month at Rockpoint Commercial’s Aspen Ridge Professional Center located at 163 Thomas Johnson Drive. The keynote speaker was Gary Large of Waynesboro Construction who talked about the construction trends and pricing of the commercial industry. Approximately 45 real estate agents attended the meeting with many first-time attendees.

Several projects were announced at this month’s event, including Fitzgerald Realty announcing that Miscellaneous Metals moved to a newly renovated facility in Walkersville at the former Rotorex building. Clagett Enterprises announced that the third office building will break ground this summer at the Conley Farm. Warner Commercial announced available space at the Shiraz Plaza on Thomas Johnson Drive, and Matan Companies announced plans and opportunities for the Wedgewood West site.

“The REALShare events are very important for me as a commercial brokerage agent in Frederick County,” said Dawn Furman Gordon, senior vice president of American National Properties. “This is our opportunity to learn, network and share information with the commercial brokerage community as well as learn pertinent news and data with Frederick County Economic Development Office. I look forward to our next event and appreciate the time and effort that is put into these meetings.”

The next quarterly meeting will be held in May hosted by Kline Scott Visco. The events are open to commercial real estate professionals.

Michigan Thursday: Notre Dame To The Big Ten in hockey

Well, it's a start.   ND hasn't ever wanted to be a part of the Big Ten for financial TV reasons, now they're coming over and sticking a toe in the water with hockey.   Who knows maybe it's the first step in bigger things to come.   Which would only happen if NBC files for chapter 11.

  • Michigan has scheduled another satellite camp, this time in Mississippi on June 8th.

  • Mgohoops is reporting that Coach B is looking at possible Sacred Heart PG transfer Cane Broome.  Cane would have to sit out a year but would have two full years in A2.  He averaged 23 points per game as a sophomore this year.   Michigan has a PG coming in with this next class but Cane could give them some experience at the position after Walton leaves.

  • OSU Gene Smith's apologizes for his Michigan remarks.

  • Jay Harbaugh doesn't have heat in his new house.

  • Aubrey Dawkins father Johnny, who just lost his Stanford head coaching job will be the new head coach at Central Florida.

Connecting Small Businesses to State Contracting Opportunities

Guest feature: Alison Tavik is Director of Communications for the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs. Follow GOMA on Facebook and Twitter.

Maryland procurement professionals will be helping small businesses on the Eastern Shore connect to state contracting opportunities during the Ready, Set, GROW! workshop on Thursday, April 7. The Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs, in collaboration with the Maryland Small Business Development Center, is conducting the free workshop at Salisbury University from 10 am – noon.

“Public procurement can be tough to navigate,” stated Jimmy Rhee, special secretary of the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs. “We want to help small and micro businesses master the skills necessary to compete with confidence as they go after prime and subcontracting opportunities in the public sector.”

The two hour workshop features a panel of procurement experts who will share valuable tips for doing business with state agencies and universities on the Eastern Shore as well as local county school systems. The panelists will define what goods and services they buy and provide guests with a list of current and upcoming solicitations. They will also answer questions from the audience then meet with small business owners one-on-one following the group presentations.

In addition to the formal presentation and panel discussion, participants will be able to meet with a host of small business resource partners in areas such as lending programs, contract financing, business skills training and economic development assistance.

To register for the Ready, Set, GROW! workshop on April 7th at the Guerrieri Center on Salisbury University’s campus, click here or visit the Office of Minority Affairs’ website and follow the Ready, Set, GROW! link on the home page.

For more information, contact the Minority Affairs’ Small Business Outreach Manager Eduardo Hayden at 410-767-0910 or eduard.hayden@maryland.gov.

There’s a new investor group in town

Investors and startup founders got together at City Garage last week to hear about a new potential funding network. In this case, they could also join and provide funding.

Amid an expansion, D.C.-based NextGen Venture Partners launched a chapter in Baltimore. Already in New York, Austin, Chicago and Boston, the organization is also adding Atlanta and Raleigh-Durham this year. You can find the full roster of Baltimore members here.

Founder Dan Mindus said NextGen already has contact with Baltimore startup-backing organizations, and identified the city’s “strong and growing startup ecosystem” as a community that could benefit from more capital.

In each local chapter, the group brings together existing investors and entrepreneurs who may want to start writing checks. They meet once a month for pitch meetings, and members can decide whether to fund a company. Typically, NextGen comes in between a seed round and Series A, with investments totaling about $200,000-$600,000.

Accelerating health technology at Rockville incubator

ROCKVILLE — Doctors and nurses caring for newborns in the developing world can find themselves stretched to the limit: Sometimes, there are just too many babies for a small staff to care for. As a result, signs of an infant in distress – a dropping heart rate, slower breathing – may go undetected until it’s too …

Wes Moore’s BridgeEdU raises $3.1 million

BridgeEdU, an education technology startup founded by author Wes Moore, has raised $3.1 million.

The seed round comes from the Lumina Foundation, angel investors and other foundations. The money will go toward building out BridgeEdU’s first-year college program for low-income students.

BridgeEdU aims to help students successfully transition from high school through the first year of college, a choke point for many students. About a third of college students don’t make it through their freshman year.

Silicon Valley money enters Baltimore mayoral election

Documents released Wednesday show national tech execs are sending money to Baltimore, and press from the likes of Re/code and Fast Company are taking notice.

But instead of a big exit like when Groupon bought OrderUp, the money is flowing to a mayoral candidate.

The most recent round of campaign fundraising reports show #BlackLivesMatter activist DeRay Mckesson received donations from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Twitter executive chairman Omid Kordestan and Slack founderStewart Butterfield. Each donated $6,000.

Why this IT consulting firm took a day off from billable hours

Nerf “snowballs” were flying during a meeting at Mind Over Machines HQ on Friday, and the boss was fully onboard. The fight broke out in the midst of a presentation, but fortunately the client was fictional.

Light City: Baltimore’s bright lights and bright ideas

In 1816, Baltimore illuminated its streets with gas lanterns. As the first American City to do so, Baltimore helped change the urban landscape forever. Two hundred years later, Baltimore still has that innovative spirit—one that Light City will showcase next week. Light City is the first large-scale, international light festival in the United States, running March 28 through April 3.

Inspiring Social Innovation
By day, innovators and thought leaders from four key industries will convene for conferences that are part of Light City U. Attendees will explore and discuss groundbreaking ideas and technologies that elicit social change. Four conference themes planned during Light City are:

• Social Innovation: Reimagining the Status Quo (March 28-29)
• Health Innovation: Creating a Healthier Future (March 30-31)
• Sustainability Innovation: Moving Smart Energy Forward (March 30-31)
• Creative Innovation: Designing Our Future (April 1-2)

Conference tickets can be purchased on the Light City website.

Maryland Startups Pitch Innovations
During the health and sustainability conferences on March 31, five local health care companies and five local sustainability companies will pitch their startup ideas to a live audience of conference attendees and a panel of venture capitalist judges. The pitch contest winners will be granted a $5,000 startup grant.

Attracting Visitors to Downtown Baltimore
By night, the city will stay bright and lively. Lights will take over the city with a series of illuminated art downtown. Performers and musicians scheduled throughout the week will entertain, while celebrating the vibrant music and art scene that enlivens Baltimore every day. Visitors can plan their Light City experience by exploring the BGE Light Walk map.

Highlighting Baltimore Artists
The magic of Light City will also reach several neighborhoods, which will feature art from artists who live within the hosting neighborhoods of Coldstream Homestead, Montebello, Hampden, Greater Mondawmin, Little Italy, and Station North.

Venture for America sees success in Baltimore

When Peter DiPrinzio came to Baltimore as a new college graduate with a liberal arts degree in 2013, he wasn’t necessarily planning to stick around.

DiPrinzio, 24, landed here as a fellow with Venture for America, a program that trains recent college graduates to work for startup companies and places them in two-year stints with a company of their choice.

“There’s a sense among college seniors and liberal arts graduates that you want to do something that leaves your options open, but is still engaging and lets you work on different projects,” DiPrinzio said. “I wanted those things. I wanted a job that let me work on different projects.”

Wolverine Wednesday: Jimmy Is Taking Michigan Spring Practice on The Road Again

I can't believe he is doing this again!   I'm sure we're going to hear from the Wayne State's of the world now.

Michigan is practicing at Ford Field this Saturday for 4 hours.   High school coaches and players are welcomed to attend.   Michigan may open it up to the general public as well.

Get ready for this: It's scheduled on a weekend, when classes are not in session!!  Will he ever stop?

Jimmy has really pushed the envelope this time.  Giving the kids a free trip to Florida over spring break, now stealing more free time on the weekend with a practice and a bus ride to Detroit.   This is getting out of hand.

What are the Lions going to think about having a great coach walking the sidelines of Ford Field?

Somebody call ESPN to cover this thing!

:)
  • Love that Jimmy isn't afraid to mix it up on twitter.   Gene Smith mentions something about Jimmy and spring break and trying to "jump start" his program.  Jimmy fires back, welcoming Gene back to relevancy after the tattoo fiasco.

  • WR Da'mario Jones who we already knew was leaving will play his final year of college football at Bowling Green.

  • Michigan's top recruit for 2017 Donovan Peoples-Jones tweeted out a video of him and Devin Gardner working out.

Glam Tech made fashion/tech mashups make sense

The intersection of fashion and technology is present in Baltimore’s biggest company, but they didn’t start out huge.

“You don’t have to be as big as Under Armour to make an impact,” said LaKisha Greenwade, a personal brand strategist who goes by Coach L.

With last weekend’s Glam Tech expo, Coach L brought the large and small together in event form. Attendees had a taste of what the huge company was up to at the Under Armour Performance Center on Friday night. On Saturday, they got a look at other entrepreneurs down the street from UA’s headquarters in a Knights of Columbus hall in Locust Point.

BioFactura plans to create 25 new jobs in Frederick

Michigan 2 For Tuesday Commit Special

It's been quiet on the commit watch lately and Michigan changed that quickly as two future Wolverines gave their respective pledges to Jimmy on Monday Night and early Tuesday morning.

First to commit is 2018 Springfield OH ILB Antwuan Johnson, who 24/7 already ranks in the top 100 for 2018 players nationally.  AJ is 6'1 and 210 pounds and clearly has some growing to do before he hits campus in a few years.   Yes, 2018 signing day is a long ways a way but it's nice to see a commit from the State of Ohio this early in the process.   AJ is Michigan's first 2018 commit.

The next player to commit is legacy LB Josh Rosh brother of  James "biggie" Ross who just graduated.   Josh has been on Michigan's radar for years and has probably been to more practices in Ann Arbor then Jimmy's staff has.   Josh like his brother James plays at St. Mary's and plays outside LB.  He is 6'2 and 225 pounds and rated a 4 star recruit to all the services.  He is #162 in ESPN's top 300.   I'm excited to see how "biggie smalls"  (too early for a nickname?) does in Don Brown's offense that loves quick blitzing LB's.  Fun fact is Josh has played varsity football at St. Mary's since he was a freshman.

There must be something in the water right now for LB's.  Michigan landed two and ND landed three in the past 48 hours.

Former Michigan DC Ron English take on Josh:  "I watched him prior to the game on tape and I was impressed because a linebacker behind the ball has to be able to read keys and respond and end up on the ball and what I saw with Josh was the same thing I saw him tape; he can definitely read keys and take direction to the football, he can destroy what we call block protection where he can strike a blocker and get off to the football. I think he's a very good tackler and he does a good job in the passing game."

Josh had offers from the likes of Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, MSU, ND, OSU, Oklahoma, UW, Tennessee, and Pitt.

Nice to have another quality LB in the fold!!

Open data bill passes City Council

Baltimore’s City Council signed off on a bill focused on the city’s open data program.

The bill, sponsored by Councilman Brandon Scott, takes steps to make the open data program permanent.

Until now, the program has been governed by an executive order issued by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in 2011. The legislation helps many of the provisions in that executive order stay in place, and gives the City Council a place in the governance of the program, Scott said in an interview earlier this year.

Johns Hopkins researchers poke a hole in Apple’s encryption

Apple's growing arsenal of encryption techniques — shielding data on devices as well as real-time video calls and instant messages — has spurred the U.S. government to sound the alarm that such tools are putting the communications of terrorists and criminals out of the reach of law enforcement.

But a group of Johns Hopkins University researchers has found a bug in the company's vaunted encryption, one that would enable a skilled attacker to decrypt photos and videos sent as secure instant messages.

This specific flaw in Apple's iMessage platform probably would not have helped the FBI pull data from an iPhone recovered in December's San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack, but it shatters the notion that strong commercial encryption has left no opening for law enforcement and hackers, said Matthew Green, a computer science professor at Johns Hopkins University who led the research team.

FourV wants to make it painfully simple to understand your company’s IT security risk

When a nurse takes vital signs, most people don’t know necessarily know the science behind each number. But since the numbers dictate whether their body is functioning properly, they have at least gleaned enough to know whether a reading is normal.

FourV is applying that vital signs approach to businesses and cybersecurity.

The startup, which is based downtown at the Spark coworking space, is about to launch a product that provides business leaders with a cyber risk score. The idea is to provide those indicators to executives who want to know whether the data is stable, but don’t necessarily have expertise in cybersecurity to know the details that CISOs are throwing at them.

Michigan Monday: No Sleep Till Brooklyn

After Michigan's First Four win on Wednesday, they flew directly to NYC and didn't get in until 4:00AM on Thursday morning with a Friday night game.   The Wolverines played a very good first half as they shot ND right out of their zone defense.  ND figured it out at half-time, played man to man and started shooting well.   Zak Irvin shot too much, Michigan's low post defense continued to be poor,  and ND came back late in the second half.  Michigan had very little answers and lost the game late.

It is was it is, Michigan might even had made it to the round of 16 with the win over ND, but wasn't going to ever make it to the Final 4.   Now for MSU on the other hand.............................

Coach B has a lot of thinking to do during the off season on it's lineup rotation, his recruiting and his coaches.   Letting the 6 man of the year go to a rival probably wasn't the best decision for a team that had trouble with defense all year.

  • There is some buzz that 3/4 star S from Alabama AJ Harris might commit today.  He has Michigan leader and just came off a visit.  AJ currently doesn't have an offer from either Alabama or Auburn.  It will be interesting to see if he pulls the trigger on a commitment today or not!

  • LB Pete Werner visited both Michigan and ND this weekend.  LB David Adams committed to ND on Sunday.

  • Point Guard Xavier Simpson a Michigan Basketball signee, won Mr. Basketball for Ohio and Gatorade Player of the Year for Ohio.  His team lost in the state final this weekend.

  •  OL/C Cesar Ruiz now from IMG but home in NJ will visit A2 again for the Spring Game.

Hootsuite deal means big exposure for Baltimore’s ZeroFOX

A new partnership with social media management company Hootsuite will mean big exposure for Baltimore’s ZeroFOX.

In a deal announced Thursday, Hootsuite will include ZeroFOX’s social media cybersecurity tools among its offerings to its 12 million customers. The partnership significantly expands ZeroFOX’s reach by getting the company in front of a new kind of customer — marketing managers — and signals the potential for big growth for ZeroFOX, as cybersecurity becomes a more pervasive part of corporate social media strategy.

ZeroFOX Chief Operating Officer Evan Blair described it like this: Before, social media security services like ZeroFOX’s may have been an optional add-on for marketing managers shopping for social media management services like Hootsuite’s — a “Hey would you like fries with that?” kind of deal.

Light City may become Baltimore’s South by Southwest

Jamie McDonald isn't quite sure who will show up for Light City Baltimore.

“It’s a first-time festival so we have no way of knowing,” she said.

McDonald isn’t worried. She said excitement is building around the March 28-April 3 event. Besides, she knows it takes time for a festival to really catch on.

She compares it to South by Southwest, the festival that put Austin, Texas, on the map and Art Basel, the art extravaganza in Miami that started out really small.

“They really redefine a city’s brand and culture in the eyes of the world,” she said.

Michigan Friday: Michigan vs. ND in NYC

It was the early season football match-up we all looked forward to every year.  That is no longer the case, because ND has a time share agreement with the ACC for a condo in Hilton Head and prefers to keep the Purdue tradition alive rather then play Michigan every year.

So what we have left is Michigan vs. ND in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.   Michigan as you know played a First Four game in Dayton to earn the right to play in this game, ND earned the right by going 11-7 in the ACC and 21-11 overall.

I don't know much about ND but reading a bit they sound a lot like Michigan, where they can be very good on offense but very bad on defense.   Like most college games, the team that gets stops and shoots the ball the best should win.  Michigan is very familiar with Barclay's Center and should feel comfortable playing there.  ND is favored by a basket.

BWI Airport Starts 2016 With New January Record

After a new all-time annual record for passenger traffic in 2015, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport today reported that 1,619,713 passengers traveled through the airport in January. That figure, an increase of 6.7 percent over January 2015, was a new January record for passenger traffic at BWI Marshall.

January 2016 was the seventh-straight monthly record for passenger traffic at BWI Marshall. A record-setting 23.8 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2015.

“BWI Marshall Airport continues to experience record-setting growth, powered by added airline service and the continued strength of the Maryland economy,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “The airport is an important economic development resource and international gateway for residents and businesses throughout our region.”

International passenger traffic again helped lead the growth at BWI Marshall in January. For January 2016, international passenger traffic climbed 30 percent to nearly 100,000 passengers. A major capital improvement, the D/E Connector program, is underway at BWI Marshall in order to add international capacity and to provide new passenger amenities.

Michigan Thursday: Watching Michigan Basketball Makes My Stomach Hurt

Robin Buckson, Detroit News
When you were 16 years old did you have a car that ran well but was held together with Bondo and Duct Tape?  I had that car and that is how I feel while I watch this team play basketball.

I got the pleasure of watching Michigan play in the Bahamas during Thanksgiving.   They shot the ball well, played good enough defense and when they needed a push, Caris took over.    The one surprise was the play of Wagner.   I thought he was going to be huge part of Michigan's success over the year as he developed.   Donnal was in a huge slump and was expected to be sitting deep on the bench.  Spike was banged up and didn't play at all.

Donnal found his game and ended up playing well in the Big Ten.  Wagner on the other hand only saw spot duty.   The roles changed last night as Michigan won a very ugly close game against a pretty poor Tulsa team.   It was a very hard game to watch.

I'm not sure what Coach B was seeing on the floor but Donnal and Doyle were struggling and Wagner was playing well.   Coach played Donnal and Doyle way too much.   Michigan looked terrible on defense and confused in the half court offense.  They didn't shoot the ball well from 3 but still found a way to win.  Which of course is the most important thing.

Derrick Walton:  Had 12 quiet points and spent more time on the bench then on the floor in foul trouble.   Michigan needs Derrick to be great if they are going to win anymore games this season.   His most memorable play last night was hitting two free throws at the end.

Mark Onnal:  Sorry I took the D out of his name, because he wasn't playing any last night.   He was getting beat for rebounds on free throw attempts.   Had two points and a pretty poor night.

Mortiz Wagner:  Gave Michigan some defense and energy off the bench.  If your giving out two game balls, he gets one.

MAAR:  Michigan's best player on the floor last night.   If he doesn't drive the ball and get to the rim for 16 points, the Wolverines aren't even in this game.   Game Ball!

Zak Irvin added another 16 points and hit a huge 3 pointer when Michigan was down 1 late.  Zak is a good guy but it seems he is more comfortable hitting mid-range jumpers then 3 point shots.  His 3 late was the only one he made all game.  He just doesn't seem comfortable in the offense right now.

Kam Chatman: Who I expected would see a ton of time against an athletic Tulsa team, saw 4 minutes of action and didn't score.  He was rated a top 30 guy and outside of the IU shot, hasn't lived up to his recruiting ranking.

Ricky Doyle: Is in some type of sophomore slump and looks completely lost out there on both sides of the ball.

Duncan Robinson: Had 13 points and hit 2 three pointers.  Michigan really needs to find him the ball more in the half court offense.

If the team that showed up against IU plays ND on Friday night, they have a great chance of playing on Sunday.  If the team that showed up in Dayton last night shows up in Brooklyn, Michigan is going to be home for the weekend.
