The Maryland Department of Commerce has released its 2015 Activity Report, recapping the state’s transformative year and “Open for Business” atmosphere.
Featured in the year’s top accomplishments is the agency’s transition to Commerce, with Mike Gill named the state’s first official Secretary of Commerce; increasing Maryland’s global footprint with Governor Larry Hogan’s economic development mission to Asia; and the launch of the Maryland Office of Tourism’s new user-friendly website, visitmaryland.org.
The report also contains a summary of major job announcements in Maryland, including Tempur Sealy International’s newly-constructed distribution operations in Hagerstown; Direct Energy Solar’s 240 new jobs in Howard County; and Emergent BioSolutions’ expanded manufacturing facility in Baltimore.
“We have a renewed focus and mission — making sure Maryland businesses stay here, supporting them as they grow, and attracting the best of the rest from around the world to join us in our great state,” said Commerce Secretary Mike Gill.
Looking forward, Commerce will follow its new roadmap – a Strategic Plan for Accelerating Economic Development in Maryland – developed by the Maryland Economic Development Commission. The plan provides a series of goals that will help Commerce foster a competitive business climate and enhance community development throughout the state.
