Light City: Baltimore’s bright lights and bright ideas

In 1816, Baltimore illuminated its streets with gas lanterns. As the first American City to do so, Baltimore helped change the urban landscape forever. Two hundred years later, Baltimore still has that innovative spirit—one that Light City will showcase next week. Light City is the first large-scale, international light festival in the United States, running March 28 through April 3.

Inspiring Social Innovation
By day, innovators and thought leaders from four key industries will convene for conferences that are part of Light City U. Attendees will explore and discuss groundbreaking ideas and technologies that elicit social change. Four conference themes planned during Light City are:

• Social Innovation: Reimagining the Status Quo (March 28-29)
• Health Innovation: Creating a Healthier Future (March 30-31)
• Sustainability Innovation: Moving Smart Energy Forward (March 30-31)
• Creative Innovation: Designing Our Future (April 1-2)

Conference tickets can be purchased on the Light City website.

Maryland Startups Pitch Innovations
During the health and sustainability conferences on March 31, five local health care companies and five local sustainability companies will pitch their startup ideas to a live audience of conference attendees and a panel of venture capitalist judges. The pitch contest winners will be granted a $5,000 startup grant.

Attracting Visitors to Downtown Baltimore
By night, the city will stay bright and lively. Lights will take over the city with a series of illuminated art downtown. Performers and musicians scheduled throughout the week will entertain, while celebrating the vibrant music and art scene that enlivens Baltimore every day. Visitors can plan their Light City experience by exploring the BGE Light Walk map.

Highlighting Baltimore Artists
The magic of Light City will also reach several neighborhoods, which will feature art from artists who live within the hosting neighborhoods of Coldstream Homestead, Montebello, Hampden, Greater Mondawmin, Little Italy, and Station North.
