Local Winery Celebrates New Tasting Space

Since 2010, Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery has offered a delicious selection of beverages in and around Frederick County. The company is celebrating the next phase in its business development with a grand opening event in July, highlighting its new log cabin tasting room.

After seeing an astonishing 50 percent increase in production each year since opening, Orchid Cellar has decided to enhance the customer experience with the addition of a tasting space that includes a 35-foot bar. The official grand opening will feature tours of the sprawling property, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a musical performance. The Holy Crepes food truck will also be onsite for sweet snacks to accompany the tastings.

Mead is a type of honey wine and is the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage. It is created through the fermentation of honey and water, and sometimes is flavored with spices or fruit. Mead has recently become very popular in the United States as consumers are looking to alternatives to the classic beer and wine. Orchid Cellar’s meads are a staple at local Baltimore favorites, having been featured in cocktails served at restaurants such as Woodberry Kitchen and Grand Cru. Orchid Cellar also serves a delicious array of red and white wines.

Nestled at the foothills of Catoctin Mountains in Middletown, the winery has picturesque views to accompany the tasting experience. Orchid Cellar strives to blend history and tradition with technology to create a one-of-a-kind product that attracts global purchasers.

“Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery is very excited for this expansion so that we can share the divine world of mead with everyone,” said Dan Kennedy, sales and marketing manager for Orchid Cellar. “Maryland’s business environment has helped create booming wine, beer, and spirits industries, so local businesses – like ours – can make one-of-a-kind products every Marylander can be proud of.”

Orchid Cellar produces an innovative twist on the historical drink through a collection of flavors for risk takers. The Hunter collection features a specially crafted mead called the Reaper, which is made with the world’s hottest pepper. Another beverage for those with daring taste buds is the Ghost Hunter, described as smoky hot with floral honey flavors.

The opening of a tasting room follows a growing trend by wineries, breweries, and distilleries to add an on-site experience for customers. Frederick County is at the forefront of the industry’s growth in Maryland with three distilleries opening in 2016 alone. The atmosphere and environment for these companies has become as crucial to the brand as the product itself.
